A "forgettable" Buchla Filter Circuit is Reborn // 3 Patches with Pas-Isel from Dwyfor Tech

video upload by DivKid

"Pas-Isel is Welsh for Low Pass, handy that when this is a Eurorack filter module.

Dwyfor Tech are a new company who have taken inspiration from what has been said to be a "forgettable" Buchla filter circuit, smashed that into a Korg MS-50 diode ring for a resonance path and masses of lovely guitar pedal style overdrive and they've made that a Eurorack filter with bags of character, and a different tone and circuit design (it's really multiple high shelf EQs).

In the video we share some of the key points in the story of what this circuit was based on and a bit about the company. You can read more about it all on my website in this interview // https://divkidvideo.com/story-time-dw...

'3 Patches with ... ' is a video series where I pull focus on just 3 things with a piece of gear, set of functions or techniques. More of these to come alongside the larger in depth demos in the future.

You can grab a DIY kit from Pas-Isel (and request and assembled one directly) here // https://reverb.com/shop/dwyfortech

*TIMING INDEX // CHAPTERS*

"Pas-Isel is a four-pole lowpass filter for Eurorack modular systems, with an architecture unlike any other. Combining design elements from Buchla and Korg, this diode-based VCF uses highpass filters in op-amp negative feedback loops to generate its signature 'wooly jumper' -24dB lowpass response.

Pas-Isel is entirely realised with through-hole components for ease of assembly. This listing is for the full kit version, which includes all components necessary for you to solder together straight away at home. All our front panels are high-quality anodised CMYK prints on chunky, quality brushed aluminium sheet stock, made in the UK. We also offer a panel and PCB set, if you'd rather source your own components, in a separate listing.

8hp wide, 3U high.
Conforms to Eurorack (Doepfer A-100) standards.
33mm depth required for mounting.
Idle power consumption 25mA on both rails.
25kHz self-oscillation power consumption 45mA on both rails.

You can find the build/user manual at tinyurl.com/pasisel - We highly recommend giving it a read before buying, to make sure it's the right kit for you. I can assemble kits to order to provide you with a completed module, dependent on my free time. I charge £50 for my time and labour in this case."

Eurorack Melodies & Musical Patterns MADE EASY // Sebsongs Odds & Euclidean

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Here we have 4 new Eurorack modules from Sebsongs. Odds is a pattern generator, Euclidean a rhythm generator, Attenuvert x6 a 6 channel attenuverter and the ST MIXER is a 4 channel mono & stereo mixer.

We’ll be focussing on Odds & Euclidean and looking at how they make Eurorack melodies and patterns both musical and easy to make. Odds is a 4HP generative melodic looping sequencer. It has controls for probability, scale and chord tones, transposition and looping with step length and rhythmic offset controls. Euclidean is a 3 channel, 4 output Euclidean sequencer that’s easy to use for quick beat making or rhythm generating for sequencers and modulation. It makes it easy to create interesting clock divisions, polymetric patterns or odd time signature sequencing.

Tube Distortion In 16hp - Rabbit Hole, Saevitum, Turbo Entubulator

video upload by John Schussler

"I have a 16hp hole in the rack waiting for a tube distortion. Which one do I choose?

Here are three options. There are more at this size, but I happen to have these three.

As it turns out, they're all very different in sound. The Turbo Entubulator specializes in flexible tube tone. The Rabbit Hole heads towards tube-y corruption while still staying somewhat civilized. And the Saevitum, well, it's just angry angry angry.

So I don't really have a choice so much as a selection for rotation, I suppose.
But it's interesting to hear them back to back and really get a feel for the differences in their character.

Input audio was a basic sine wave from a Dixie II+. Sequenced by Stochastic IG.

----------------

Note this appears to be the first post to feature Apollo View and their Rabbit Hole. The Saevitum by Abyss Devices, and Turbo Entubulator by Epicycloid have been featured before. That said, here's some info on the Rabbit Hole for the archvies, followed by a DivKid video.

Packed to the brim with character, Rabbit Hole is the first module by Apollo View, combining facility as a mixer with four stages of saturation and distortion, provided by both tube and solid-state circuits. With two channels labeled A and B, each offers an input VCA with Gain control and control voltage jack. Channels are summed before hitting the Drive circuit, a solid-state design with hard-clipping tendencies at extreme settings, then moving onto the starved 12AU7 tube section. For truly searing patches, flip on the OWTH switch, short for "Off With Their Heads", and make heads roll with a diode clipping circuit. There's also voicing switches for the tube, feedback capabilities, and the option to expand the number of inputs with the Curiouser module. Grit up your patches with Apollo View's Rabbit Hole.

Tube distortion fun, patch hacks & VCA tips // Apollo View Rabbit Hole & Curiouser

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Here we’ll explore making the most of distortion, exploiting tubes for interesting behaviours such as sub harmonic tracking as well as explore lots of VCA and mixing tips for things like building crossfaders out of VCAs. We’ll be doing this while demonstrating the new Rabbit Hole and Curiouser modules from Apollo View. Rabbit Hole is a Eurorack VCA summing mixer with multiple drive stages and tone control and Curiouser is a dual vintage VCA that can be used as an input expander or used standalone."

Mass Harmonic Excitement & Tonal Sculpting // Future Sound Systems FIL4 Timbral Sculptor

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Here we have the new Timbral Sculptor Eurorack module from Future Sound Systems. It’s a harmonic power house with both filtering (with multiple unique twists) and wave folding in one module. It features clever routing and an additional VCA to patch in extra voltage control or add further dynamics to your patch. There’s also an in built Audio FM which comes from Future Sound Systems deep diving into some quirks (faults?) in some of the early Korg filter designs and then exploiting them for additional musical processing. There’s both rectifying and folding (a second wave folder!) in the resonance path of the filter which really pushes the wave shaping potential of this into some unique wave shapes that would otherwise be hard to synthesise. Clever stuff!"

"The Timbral Sculptor from Future Sound Systems together several synthesis elements designed for altering the harmonic content of audio signals at its input. The module is comprised of a multi-mode filter, VCAs, a deadband wavefolder, and a rectifier and Lockhart wavefolder in the resonance path of the filter. The Timbral Sculptor therefore can be coupled with one or several oscillators, as well as modulation sources, for a full synthesizer voice. The Filter component of the Timbral Sculptor has been designed to range from clean, low-distortion filtering to chaotic noise generation, particularly through the use of non-linear elements in its resonance path.

The Timbral Sculptor’s multi-mode filter is a -18dB/octave three-pole design based around the SSI2164 IC. When used without the rectifier or wavefolder in the resonance path, the filter behaves “cleanly” with low distortion. The filter will self-oscillate at maximum Resonance, and also has slightly accentuated Resonance at higher Cut-Off Frequency, imitating filters such as that found in the Roland TB-303. 1V/Oct control over the Cut-Off Frequency is available at the Frequency CV1 input, and the Resonance can also be voltage controlled via an attenuverter. Additional features to this filter include the Audio FM attenuverter and, in the resonance path of the filter, a rectifier network and Lockhart wavefolder. These can be employed to drastically change the behaviour of the filter. Each individual state output from the filter is fed through a VCA, courtesy of another SSI2164, and akin to the Cyclical Engine VCO module. The mixed output of this is then passed on to the next component in the Chain, whether that be the Chain Output or the deadband wavefolder named 'Timbre'.

The 'Timbre' section is named after a well-regarded deadband wavefolder design, prominent in “West-Coast” designs both new and old. Whilst the Filter section of the Timbral Sculptor belongs to classic subtractive synthesis, the Timbre section can be seen as relating to additive synthesis, as the harder the Timbre section is driven, the greater the number of harmonics that are added to the input. The Timbre section can be manipulated using the Drive control (when in Pre configuration) or from the VCAs at the filter’s outputs (when in Post configuration).

The Timbral Sculptor also features an exponential-law VCA, which can be used completely independently from the other elements of the module if desired. Otherwise, the VCA can be placed at the beginning or end of the signal chain. Note that this VCA can be employed when the Timbre section is in the Pre configuration to give voltage control over the Drive."

Ambient Modular at 6000ft // DivKid live on Mt. Rainier

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Back in 2019 I was over in Seattle, Washington, USA for 'Velocity' an event by Modular Seattle & Patchwerks. They had a warm up show and last minute encouraged me to borrow some modules and a case, put a system together and play at the show. This was good as it led into my talk on zonal approaches to live modular systems for the main event Velocity. While travelling around and still with the system some days later we decided to take the rig up a snow capped mountain and perform up there. Freezing cold, shivering hands and a beautiful view!

An exclusive 15 page PDF is available for Patreon supporters that highlights all the patching, my zonal approach, modules used, the history of my approach to live minimal ambient modular and more. Head to https://bit.ly/DK-patreon if you'd like to gain access to a great community and exclusives.

A huge thanks to D B Pawlan who when we were driving around Tacoma and Seattle Washington said 'we should take the modular up there' and pointed to the huger Mt. Rainier that was always in the view. The clip at the end of this video is David driving back up to near where we were if you're curious.

This system was quickly put together in the days leading up to the surprise performance with modules, case and cables borrowed from Bradley Millington (Modular Seattle) and David Pawlan (Wabisabi). A huge thanks to them for facilitating and encouraging a performance on a new system and for being so awesome with me pulling modules out of their set ups to do this. I used the same system for my talk and presentation at Velocity 2019 as well as for another performance live at the Chapel."

Next Generation Eurorack Bursts! // AJH Synth Multi Burst Envelopes

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Here we have the new Multi Burst Envelopes Eurorack module from AJH Synth. It takes a classic burst functions and elevates that up a level by bursting envelopes (rather than just triggers) and also allowing you to slope in or out the bursts. This would take a VCA with an envelope to make a traditional burst rise or fall over it’s burst period, so a handy and musical addition for this module. There’s CV control over all parameters and options to merge internal and external clocks for polyrhythms as well as step through the burst stages with any gate or trigger pattern you’d like to throw at it."

An intro to Stolperbeats by Making Sound Machines // Dilla style humanised beat sequencing (+ more!)

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Hello and welcome to this video on Stolperbeats from Making Sound Machines. This is a quick introductory overview to the module, some of the features and me making some beats and having fun with the module.

Stolper is German for ‘stumble’ with Stolperbeats meaning stumbling beats that cover the grooves and musical feels of drunk, wonky, lazy, off kilter hip hop rhythms with humanised timings, flams and custom shuffle and swing settings. With modes for DILLA, SHAKE, PUSH and CLAVE you can dial in the general musical feel and timings you’re going for then alter the amount of shuffle. At its core the module is a drum sequencer, offering both step sequencing and patterns for kick snare, 2 hi hats and 2 percussion lines as well as various sync and clock division outputs. So there’s plenty to go at for modular sequencing (and MIDI if that floats your boat).

A full demo video will come around the launch of the module, so ask questions in the comments and let chat about what you’d like to see from the module in the main demo video.

New Divkid Stereo Strip - A Channel Strip For Eurorack

STEREO STRIP // Stereo processing for Eurorack with EQ, CV pan, VCA and more

NEW DIVKID MODULE!!! video upload by DivKidVideo

"I’m proud to present to you STEREO STRIP. My next module made in collaboration with Befaco. Stereo Strip is a stereo EQ, VCA, panner, distortion, mute & line level input and/or output interface for external gear.

Stereo Strip builds upon the well trodden paths of studio channel strips expanding them for musical and creative modular use with voltage control. Simply try swapping out simple VCAs for Stereo Strip to enhance your patches with EQ and voltage controlled panning. Or get creative and check out the patches below for highly shapeable distortion hacks, mind bending stereo ring modulation, CV routing, feedback waveshaping and more."

Divkid Stereo Strip - A Channel Strip For Eurorack
video upload by Patchwerks

"In this video Matthew (aka EZBOT) shares an overview and demo of the Divkid and Befaco collaboration, Stereo Strip.

Stereo Strip takes the idea of a channel strip and makes it modular. We hope that by bringing this long-established component of the audio engineering world into the Eurorack environment and by adding CV control over its key parameters that you will find new, creative ways to use it in your patches!

It features stereo inputs and outputs for audio or CV with EQ, voltage controlled panning, stereo VCA, performable mute and input/output level switching for Eurorack or line level uses. Abusing the input level switching allows for some musical, modulate-able and highly shapeable distortion sounds too.

Stereo Strip was designed to be a creative part of a modular patch. Creating
stereo images from mono sources, shaping and modulating existing stereo
images, synthesising stereo pseudo ring modulation, sweetening FX with EQ or drastically wave shaping your oscillators, creating send FX routings with benefits or it can simply be used as a channel strip at the end of chain in a patch.

The addition of line level gain boosting (for the input) or reduction (for the output) allow it to work as a stereo input or output interface for external gear with the advantage of the VCA, panning and the EQ to shape the sound. Experiment with bringing external gear into the Eurorack format and then shape and modulate those sounds them on the way in!

Try patching Stereo Strip anywhere you would place a VCA in a system and/or explore its EQ and voltage controlled panning, which are rarer additions to the sound sculpting options for the Eurorack format.

New Module: Making Sound Machines - Stolperbeats. Shuffled Beats in Eurorack!

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Happy Easter everyone!

What started out as a tiny little seedling of a project, our secret pattern generator, has grown into its own and hatched as a full-grown Eurorack module! Stolperbeats, roughly translating to "beats tripping over themselves", is a drum trigger sequencer designed to create shuffled beats influenced by artists like FlyingLotus, HiatusKaiyote and JDilla. We've always been fascinated by taking our beats offgrid to give them more fluidity and life. This module allows you to easily dial in and seamlessly switch between all the shuffle, feeling and groove we would, in the past, painstakingly nudge together in a DAW.

Stolperbeats is heard here triggering Eurorack drum modules, including the fantastic Prok Drum available as a DIY kit from Thonk doing the obiwankenobi dragon call, Tiptopaudio’s One playing the @beatsbykabuki STRIKE audio card through @rocket_not FenixIV phaser and an unreleased Making Sound Machines prototype called PercussiveMaintenance, played through @serge_by_random_source 's wavemultiplier and with added oomph from @tomwhitwell's MusicThing Minidrive. The performance showcases switching from a nonuplet groove to a quintuplet shuffle in the blink of an eye.

Stolperbeats features CV and MIDI control over trigger patterns for Kick, Snare, open and closed Hihat and 2x Percussion, as well as control over the depth of shuffle applied. It outputs trigger signals for use with Eurorack drum modules, and MIDI suitable for drum machines and synthesizers.

The module is not in stores quite yet but you will be able to play it at @superbooth_berlin 2022. And you might have noticed a sneaky little peak of it in a @divkidvideo already : D"

Sputnik Variable Waveform Generator

pic via @Noisebug

"The Sputnik Variable Waveform Generator is a Buchla inspired discrete triangle core oscillator. One major change is the inclusion of a hard sync vs. the typical triangle core soft sync. The module features 5 dedicated audio outputs (sub, pulse, sine, saw and triangle) and various animation controls such as built-in waveshaper, saw animator and drive circuits with attenuation amount inputs. It also has a vco/lfo switch, both linear and exponential FM inputs with attenuators and very good tracking."

For those that may not know, Sputnik is Roman Filippov's (of Black Corporation) other brand.

Dynamic Processing Techniques for Eurorack // Dannysound Dynamics & VU Meters
video upload by DivKidVideo

"Here we have the character oozing ‘Dynamics’ Eurorack module from Dannysound. The module has multiple functions and can be patched to operate as a compressor, expander, harmonic exciter, saturator or distortion, sub bass generator, EQ, envelope follower or a simple VCA. With all those functions to hand I wanted to make a video that explores modular music making techniques as well as applying wider music production tips, tricks and workflows that you can apply in your own music and sound creation too.

Throughout the video I’m using 2x Dynamics modules and the VU meters expander allowing for showing more concepts per patch, but you can apply these patches to a single module too. The module can be used as a separate EQ and compressor which too, allowing you to EQ your side chain signal (like sidechain filters on compressors) or simply use a single Dynamics module like two independent modules. With so much potential for this set of functions you’ll find some no talking patches just exploring adding life to beats or the amp drive (lovely saturation) spread throughout the video as musical interludes."

via Thonk

"The Dannysound Dynamics is a fully featured Eurorack mono compressor / expander module with a range of on board controls and features. The module has been designed so that it can be used with another Dynamics module as a stereo pair with the Dannysound VU Meters Expander.

This module was originally designed to focus on drum processing & compression, but in reality can be used for a wide variety of applications. The Dynamics comprises of:

· Compressor / Expander

· Sub Bass Enhancer

· 3 Band Inductor-based EQ

· Harmonic Exciter

The compressor / expander section uses a discrete transistor-based circuit that allows for soft clipping when overdriven. The envelope detector is known as a feedforward type of circuit; taking its input from the signal before it goes to the compressor rather than after. This type of circuit is known for having fast attack times.

The Sub Bass enhancer has its own compression circuit that “ducks” the initial transient. This allows the sub bass to be increased without distortion on the transient peaks increasing the overall level.

There is a MIX control to allow the unprocessed signal to be mixed back in with the processed signal.

The 3 band EQ is an inductor based LCR design. After trying out various EQ topologies this was the design that sounded the nicest. When overdriven it gives a nice “bite” to the sound and it has a certain characterful charm that’s hard to put into words. The controls have a response that are subtle to begin with and get more pronounced as the controls are increased.

The Harmonic Exciter adds a little distortion to the high frequencies which bring out the sparkle of cymbals or the snap of snare drums. The operating bandwidth can be switched between Low (snare drum snap) or High (Cymbals sparkle).

There are inputs for side chaining and control with an external envelope as well as an envelope out to make the envelope detector output available to drive other modules.

It also features separate inputs and outputs for the Compressor / Expander and EQ sections, so they could be used as 2 separate modules."

Dynamics sandwiched between VU Meters.

9 Ways to Use Filters Creatively // Dannysound Multimode Ladder Filter

video upload by DivKidVideo

"While it’s common for classic circuits to be reused, cloned and emulated it’s not as often we see them expanded on. So I was excited to see that Dannysound’s Eurorack filter module takes a classic filter design and expands it in several ways. The Multimode Ladder Filter is based on the 1960s classic Moog transistor based low pass ladder filter design but it expands it by being multimode (with added band pass and high pass), it adds level control to clean up or further saturate the filter, features additional CV control with attenuation and compensates for the lost low end at higher resonance settings which is a characteristic found in the original Moog filter.

This video is a demo of the module as well a tutorial offering 9 patches for pushing your filtering creatively. Try these in your systems and leave a comment letting me know how you get on.

Logic in Eurorack with EAS from INSTRUO

Everything you need to know about logic in Eurorack with EAS from INSTRUO
video upload by DivKidVideo

"Hello and welcome to my ultimate guide to using boolean logic gates creatively and musically for music synthesis. This video is a demo of the eas Eurorack module by Instruo but it’s also an in depth tutorial on all things logic with a 'DivKid’s Logic 101' beginners guide to logic gates that ramps right through more advanced patch based problem solving.

eas is a multi channel logic module with 4 logic gates and 7 simultaneous outputs in 4HP. It also featuring some clever normalising of inputs and outputs to allow for a greater amount of varied signals from less inputs.

Logic can be such a great problem solver for a Eurorack system that I jumped at the chance to make this video a hybrid of demoing a specific Eurorack module but also making something that can serve as a tutorial for the use of logic gates anywhere you may find them, in any format. We’ll be turning basic clocks into melodies, making unique beats from simple gate sources, syncing up sloppy playing, processing audio with CMOS style ring modulation, creating possibly the greatest gated fuzz fx and plenty more. The timing index is below so you can skip around and the find the right sections to suit."

eãs
Logic gates were originally used for the implementation of Boolean functions in computation and in electronic devices. These functions were performed on one or more binary inputs to create a single binary output.

In music synthesis, this concept can be appropriated for many things including the creation of interesting rhythmic patterns as well as patch-based problem solving.

eãs is the be all and end all of logic modules. Sporting all of the classic logic gate functions, it includes AND, NAND, OR, NOR, XOR, XNOR, and NOT.

Everything from syncopated rhythmic structures, to CMOS-style ring modulation, to creative solutions to your patch’s most glaring issues, eãs is there.

Logic, after all, is the beginning of wisdom, not the end of it.

eãs | noun (nature) a cascade of water falling from a height, formed when a river or stream flows over a precipice or steep incline."

Mutable Instruments Beads ‘texture synthesiser’ // ULTIMATE GUIDE to Clouds v2!

video by DivKidVideo

"Welcome to my ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BEADS a Eurorack module from Mutable Instruments. In this video I’ll be taking you through all the settings and controls with technical run downs, raw sounds and LOTS of musical patches and applications. I always aim to pack demos full of ideas and use cases both technically and musically so I hope you enjoy the video and learn a few things.

My Beads Patch Cookbook outlining every patch in this video in detail is exclusively available for Patreon supporters. Head to https://www.patreon.com/divkid to get a copy.

Beads is the follow up to the discontinued Clouds module from Mutable Instruments. It’s labelled as a ‘texture synthesiser’ and it’s core function is real time granular synthesis. It can also be a delay, media emulator (tape), beat slicer, pitch shifter and it has a built in reverb. When you’re not processing external sounds or frozen sounds you’ve locked into the audio buffer it will load wavetables giving you a bonus wavetable oscillator that still goes through the granular processing and reverb. Compared to Clouds it’s far higher quality, has more features, better control layout with no menus and less button press/hold functions."

Schlappi Engineering 100 Grit // Eurorack filter, VCA, distortion & feedback noise instrument

DivKidVideo

"Here we have the fantastic solo noise instrument, characterful filter (clean or distorted), VCA, feedback machine and more … the 100 Grit from Schlappi Engineering.

The 100 Grit is a 4 pole low pass filter with two inputs we can push into soft character saturation, multiple modulation points including a novel set of brass ball touch points and output VCA. There’s a clean and distorted output with additional 100x gain switch we can be performed as a momentary switch as well. Throughout the module there’s normalised feedback from different points of the circuit routing different filter pole outputs to CV the output VCA, distortion circuits points to the inputs of filter modulation all of which give a series of unique and interactive tone shaping options."

See this post for additional details on the Schlappi Engineering 100 Grit. See this post for an interview with Eric Schlappi, and see here for additional demos. See the dealers on the right for availability.
