Happy New Year! The Year in Synths 2013

Happy New Year Everyone!

What a busy year it has been in the world of synths.

This is going to be one doozy of a post, so bear with me. This post is a review of the year in synths for 2013. We begin with Tributes to Those We Lost This Year, followed by New Manufacturers & Makers, Older Manufacturers Added to the Site, New Gear Announcements, Top 10 Posts by Traffic,  My Standout Posts for the Year, and finally This Years' Synth Events. I did my best to keep things as short and concise as possible.

Let's begin with the hardest part of the post.

Tributes to Those We Lost This Year

RIP Bernard Parmegiani - Electronic & Acoustic Composer
Lou Reed RIP
RIP Dick Raaymakers aka Kid Baltan
RIP George Duke - DreamWeaver
RIP Ralph Dyck, Sept 28, 1941 – May 20, 2013
RIP Ray Manzarek

All missed and never to be forgotten. Take a moment to remember them.

------

New Manufacturers & Makers

Starting last January, I decided to keep a running list of every new manufacturer and maker introduced to the site during the year.  This is something I haven't done before and I thought it would be interesting to see how many there were in the year.   It's easy to focus on the big synth announcements throughout the year, but what about all the new makers and brands? I shouln't have to go considerably into the significance of new designers on the scene, so I'll just say two things regarding them.  One, the number of new makers is a direct reflection on the interest in our scene, and two, these are the creators of new gear which directly translate into new designs not previously available to us.  Think about that for a moment.  These are makers and designs that did not exist before.  They are part of our synth history.  So what is the total count of new synth designers for the year? A whopping 113. Think about that a bit. One hundred and thirteen new synth designers and brands this year alone.

Here they are (note a handful date back to 2012, but 2013 marked their momentum and availability):

Jasuto Modular Synth: Accelerometer Experiment

Published on Dec 16, 2013 Mark Mosher·60 videos

"In this experiment with the Jasuto Modular synth (http://www.jasuto.com/main/) , I've got Noise node modulating FM of a Triangle wave and a sample. The noise node is moving slowly via motion modulation. I added an Accelerometer device which is modulating LFO FM of Square node and delay time. My iPad is held to a mic stand with The Gig Easy Mount (https://thegigeasy.com/) which allows me to move the iPad around pretty aggressively without worrying about a drop. The video also illustrates that motion is relative and even though I manually move the Noise node, it keeps moving with the recorded motion relative to where I drag it.

iPad in my studio 2: Addictive Synth, Jasuto Pro, NodeBeat & Sylo Synth

YouTube Uploaded by RanKirlian on Oct 9, 2011

"More demos of iPad synths and musical apps that I'm using and enjoying in my studio. You can jump to the demo of each synth by clicking the next times: Addictive Synth (0:07), Jasuto Pro (6:53), NodeBeat (11:33) and Sylo Synth (13:20).
Brief descriptions (from the video text):

* Addictive Synth [iTunes]: dynamic wavetable synthesizer from VirSyn featuring intelligent randomizer for sounds and arpeggios and CoreMIDI support. Having a lot of morph and modulation options, this synth also allows to directly draw the osc wavetables and the filter envelopes. It is great for pads, basses, leads and arpeggios.

* Jasuto Pro [iTunes]: node-based modular synthesizer able to build almost any kind of sound and effect. It contains modules for oscillators, filter, effects, math ops, signal treatment, a complete sampler, a step sequencer and a virtual keyboard. It is one of the most powerful iOS synths I know.

Jasuto uses the relative position of nodes and their connections to control the sound. So the scene not only represents the synthesis structure, but also a custom multi-touch control surface. Motion can be recorded per node giving you rich, flexible automation. Also, you can create entirely new samples by drawing right in the app. It comes installed with more than 45 modules. Each of the modules have been hand-optimized for your devices CPU, allowing you to create extremely complex scenes.

* NodeBeat [iTunes]: it is an experimental node-based audio sequencer and generative music application for iOS. By combining music and playful exploration, NodeBeat allows anyone to create an exciting variety of rhythmic sequences and ambient melodies in a fun and intuitive fashion.

* Sylo Synth [iTunes]: this synth allows you to play music, or create sound effects, using sounds from basic waveforms or using the iPads built-in microphone. It features live time-stretching technology based on granular synthesis and some great FX units: frequency modulation, ring modulation, echo/delay, distortion and a low-pass filter with resonance control.

Sylo Synth is specially great for rare sound effects and drones."

Jasuto YUMI:synth - Bowed String Simulator Now Available

"YUMI:synth is the worlds first realistic sounding bowed string simulator for iOS. All sound generation is completely synthesized, absolutely no samples are used.

You can play two strings at once (at different locations on the scale) and bow manually or automatically. The scale system allows you to quickly define all the playable notes.

Also included are two high quality stereo effect units: ping-pong delay and reverb.

You can easily save/load presets, and backup your presets via iTunes.

Finally, there's an interactive help system that allows you to get info on a control once it's touched."

YUMI:synth is from Jasuto, makers of Jasuto Pro. You can find previous posts here and Jasuto on YouTube here. You might remember Yumi, the violin simulator from this recent post.

I gave YUMI:synth a quick try and I have to say it is a great sounding app. The added delay and reverb, along with subtle control settings allow for some truly haunting and expressive sounds.

Yumi, the violin simulator

via hemicube on the Jasuto forum

"Meet Yumi, the violin simulator!

It's a silly name (I like those obviously) meaning 'bow' in Japanese...

So this is sorta the first thing that's been built with the new Jasuto Studio framework, the sound quality is amazing and absolutely no samples are used. It's using a fairly novel approach to achieve synthesis in realtime without aliasing or any sort of digital stepping, and yes it sounds like a true violin or even a cello.

I'm going to make a Youtube video demonstrating the sound quality next...

Also I'm not sure if that's the final UI or not, this app is more about functionality and sound quality. So yeah, I don't wanna give too many details but hopefully in a week or so it'll be out (iPad initially)!

iMatik - Album Made Entirely with Instruments on The iPhone

Tom Freeman wrote in to let me know of his new release iMatik which was created using nothing but an iPhone. The following is the press release followed by a detailed list of the apps he used.

"Music producer Freematik creates an album completely using an iPhone

An entire album has finally been created using only an iPhone! From the mind of Freematik, a Bay Area local rap & hip-hop producer who has produced many projects in a "traditional" music studio, this first of it's kind concept album breaks new creative ground in modern music production.

Tom Freeman, the producer and artist known as Freematik, had this to say about the album:

"iMatik is a fresh DJ mixtape full of phat beats, DJ scratching, live synths and all types of crazy sounds, made using only an iPhone. Everything was made using apps available from the iTunes app store, such as Beatmaker, iDrum, Flare, Jasuto, etc. The parts were programmed over the course of a few months, in places including hotels, motels, the beach, bars, and anywhere else you would bring a phone. While this initially started just as a way to have fun and do some music "on the road", it transformed into an awesome psychedelic hip hop and electronic music experience. Not my normal type of project but I really love it, maybe more than anything I've ever done. Plus it was crazy fun to make."

Check out the album at: www.freematik.com

About Freematik
Freematik is a music producer who works mainly with underground rap artists in the Bay Area. His production skills can be heard on a number of mixtapes, as well as in bars and clubs around the Bay Area. He produces his own albums as well, which are available at www.freematik.com."

The following are notes for three tracks if you want to hear how each app fit in the mix. You can find the download links to each on http://freematik.com/.

"3. Now You Know: Good example of an Intua Beatmaker MPC-style beat, with DJ scratches supplied by Flare, and low synth provided by miniSynth. I also used the "toy" app iSkream on this track for the "Now You Know" vocal sample, which is my girlfriend talking into the iPhone. That app lets you play back samples in real time, and mangle them with a variety of effects.

10. e: This beat was made with iZotope iDrum Club Edition, with synth sounds from NLogFree. There is a vocal sample that is stretched out at the end, and that was done with Sound Warp, which lets you drag the sample playback by moving your finger on the phone's screen.

12. Is This Your Special Bush: This track is a great example of Flare, the best DJ scratching app for iPhone. I overdubbed a bunch of DJ scratching effects over a beat I made in Beatmaker, and it really to me sounds like a "DJ" album ala DJ Shadow, except done on just an iPhone."

I asked Tom how he recorded and mastered the tracks:
"Since the iPhone can't do multiple apps at the same time, and what I wanted to do definitely involved playing one app over another, I ended up tracking everything through a Universal Audio 2108 Stereo Pre, by way of a mini-dual 1/4" cable. Everything was tracked into my Mac Pro running Cubase 5. I used a Summit DCL 200 Stereo Compressor on the mix buss, and used a huge amount of Universal Audio plugins, including the new Manley Massive Passive on individual tracks and in mastering.

My thought about it is if I was doing an "all-saxophone" album, for example, I wouldn't stop at not using a DAW to multi-track, mix, etc. so I think the same applies to an "all iPhone" album. But if running multiple apps was possible I would have kept it all in the phone, just because it sounds fun to try."

Note multi-tasking is coming to the iPhone.

Apps used in iMatik:
Intua Beatmaker [BeatMaker]
A-Sync Games Flare[Flare Scratch]
