via Thomann UK

Update: Additional details via the MAM MB33 page:

"The MB33 Retro is manufactured completely in Germany, including assembly, mounting, casing, print and packaging – which is something, we are particularily proud of.

My thanks go to Hans Thomann and Bernd Siegismund from Musikhaus Thomann and Hari Rupp from the Music Store in Cologne, without whom this project would not have been possible. Thanks also to Artur Grönke and Harry Brandes, both of which have contributed greatly to the development of the MB33.

As with all analog devices the tolerance within the individual components is different from each other. Thus each MB33 is unique and always sounds somewhat different. This is what makes up a large part of the appeal for analogue instruments. Thus creating a much smaller device due to the SMD construction, it still contains all relevant components of the original.

The MB33 Retro was, like his predecessor, developed by Dipl.Ing. Stefan Schmidt.
Stefan Schmidt is one of the best engineers worldwide in this field , emphasized by building his own synthesizer „Schmidt“, a high-end synthesizer, used in all the top studios in the world. As with the original it was despensed of the on-off switch, since the power supply consumes almost 20 times more electricity than the MB33 by itself.

Questions and suggestions please address to „service@mam-germany.de“

1. TUNE: fine pitch tuning +/- 50 cent
2. WAVE: Blends the waveforms square and sawtooth
3. CUTOFF: Sets the upper cutoff frequency of the filter
4. RESONANCE: Creates resonances in the square frequency
5. ENV MOD: intensity of an Envelope to the cutoff frequency
6. ENV DECAY: Decay time of the Envelope
7. ACCENT: is triggered via MIDI and affects Envelope, Cutoff and Volume
8. VOLUME: volume control at the output of MB33
9. MIDI-LED: alternately on incoming MIDI signals, permanently at Autotune
10. ON-LED: the MB33 is on
11. Output: Audio output of MB33
12. SCALE / OFFSET: Adjusts the intensity of the cutoff controller
13. VCF IN: Audio signal can be processed via the VCF of the MB33
14. MIDI IN: socket for controlling the sound generator of the MB33
15. MIDI CH: Set the MIDI channel (see below)
16. DEMO / AUTOTUNE: Activates AUTOTUNE (in normal operation), or the DEMO ( button down while turning on)
17. 12V AC: Socket AC adapter

Modified MAM MB33 Analog RETRO Bass Synthesizer w/ Circuitbenders Acid FM Mods

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
Published on Mar 21, 2017 circuitbenders.co.uk

"MAM MB33 Retro with Acid FM mods: This video shows the filter FM mod modulating the filter cutoff at audio frequencies using the internal square and sawtooth VCO waveforms as FM sources. It also demonstrates the Filter Lock mod that holds the filter and VCA open with no envelope, the resonance boost, and the overdrive mod.

The MB33 retro seems to be designed to slightly distort the output stage at full volume, much like the TB303 did. The Drive mod boosts this distortion savagely for some grungy acid techno sounds."

Mam MB33 Synth (TB-303 clone)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Mam MB33, full midi control of parameters, VCF in for filtering of external signals. This is the MK I, important as it can be modded as seen here- Circuit Benders MB33 Acid FM Mods

Has added function of being able to mix square and sawtooth waves instead of just one."

The listing also states the circuitry is an exact clone of the x0xb0x. I haven't heard of this before and according to Circuitbenders they are not the same. The x0xb0x is lady ada's exact clone of the TB-303's circuitry, while I'm guessing the MB33 was based on it.

History of Braintec / Touched By Sound / MAM

click cykong posted the following history of Braintec, Touched By Sound and MAM taken from the AH archives. As it originally came from the archives I decided to post it in full here as well. Be sure to check out ckong for more images and more synth content in general.

The following was posted on AH in October 2000 by Michael from Touched by Sound:

"I don't really like talking too much about the 'old' days, but also I think some things should be pointed out right, what is said about MAM and TBS.

In 1993 TBS met Stefan Schmidt. I had the idea of making a rackmount TB-303 clone and a nice rack vocoder. My partner (who had the money) founded a company called Braintec that year.

Braintec developed and manufactured the Transistorbass-3, which was a very good clone plus a lot more features. TBS distributed this product, and approx. 400 pieces were made.

I split up with my partner and so did Stefan.

20 miles from here there was a small company called MAM (Music And More) which was making little rack mixers and amps and gadgets like that. Not very well known, but cheap stuff and useful. We put Stefan together with them and they started designing a lot of products with some of our ideas and co-designs. First of all: they made a cheap version of the Transistorbass3, which was of course the MAM MB33 bass synthesizer. Then the VF11 vocoder and so on.

That year I said I would like to do distribution worldwide for the product.

Because of TBS being a retailer and shops probably would not buy from an opponent - we finally decided to call it Music And More distribution, first as a subdivision of TBS, a year later, as independent limited company. We sold more than 5000 MB33 and more than 2000 VF11 worldwide. Not bad, for a small company!

Last year my partner and one of the owners of MAM (manufacturer) didn't get on anymore so they just stopped supplying us. They had big problems with financing the production and lack of quality. Stefan was tied up for 1 year developing the SQ16 sequencer and the market was longing for new products from MAM.

We found a small company near us manufacturing tube-preamps and similar stuff. They were also analog freaks and had an much better quality production. I started designing many products with them and we badged them as MAM. At that time we mad the first run of DRM1's. I think 100 pieces came onto the market as MAM, before we split up.

We redesigned and improved the DRM1 a little and now we make it as TBS. We are currently working on the Mephisto and a Midi-Theremin. I hope I didn=B4t bore you with this excursion. Please feel free to contact me anytime should you require more information.

Best Regards
Michael

MAM MB33 Retro Analog Bass Synthesizer [TB-303 Clone] - Audio Demo

Published on Dec 2, 2016 Acid Alex

"Here's a demo of the MB33 Retro, a cool little clone of Roland's TB-303.

I've used a few different patterns and swept through the various settings so you can get a good feel for how it sounds. The MB33 has two little controls on the back to adjust the cutoff scale and offset. These have been calibrated so the cutoff range exactly matches that of the TB-303.

As you'll hear this is surprisingly close to the real thing, more so than my x0xb0x, TB-3 and TT-303 I would say. You can't get a better clone than the MB33 at this price.

I use the excellent Engine MIDI sequencer from Social Entropy to sequence the MB33 (and all my other gear). Highly recommended!

I used the MB33 Retro in my last two tracks. Check them out below..."

Three O' Three (feat. Elektron Digitakt + MAM MB33)

Published on Nov 24, 2018 Erwin Dorleijn

"Revisiting one of the best 90s acid-rave tracks, Three O' Three by Public Energy. Pure TR-909 and TB-303 bliss! I tried to recreate the vibe using Elektron's Digitakt loaded with 909 samples, and MAM MB33, a small analog synth. It does quite a good job emulating the 303 basslines!"

Raw Deep House Jam #1

Published on Jun 13, 2017 snolan1990

"Pure raw live house with a deep vibe. Forgive the rough nature!

Just before I loaded up another tune I was working on I thought I'd fire up the MAM MB33 and Akai MFC42 for a quick work out.

Just a loop made in a couple of minutes but I thought I would record a quick video rather than just dump it.

Drums - Akai S900 & SCI Drumtraks
Bass - MAM MB33
Pad - Roland Juno-60 through the Akai MFC42
Lead - Moog Slim Phatty
Sequencer - Akai ASQ10"

MAM MB33 Retro Bass Boss DM-2w Arturia Keystep Dawless Jam

Published on Jul 4, 2018 NomNomChomsky

"This is an acid bass jam using the TB303 clone (MAM MB33 Retro) into the analog delay pedal (Boss DM-2w) , sequenced by the Arturia Keystep.

Visual effects thrown together in After Effects. The really glitchy one is called Pixel Sorting. That's a fun one. Gotta have some crazy eye candy when doing the dawless acid jams."

MAM MB33 Retro Bass + iPad = ULTIMATE 303 CLONE!

Published on Aug 24, 2018 Electronisounds Audio

"Exploring the MAM MB33 Retro Bass (Roland 303 Clone)
This little guy is a very good price. Especially if you already have the iPad and Audio interface like I did... ;) lol
YEAH! I have always wanted this sound in my arsenal and this little clone sounds FANTASTIC, especially when paired with this RAT distortion pedal for some serious acid crunch!
Great sound and it cuts right through the mix! Add a load of reverb and delay, and I can get lost just tweaking this juicy filter!
This little beauty is going to see a LOT of use in my live jams!"
