Parallella: A Supercomputer For Everyone on Kickstarter

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/adapteva/parallella-a-supercomputer-for-everyone
If the Kickstarter video causes your mouse to disappear, click off screen and it should come back.

Note the video and project is not directly focused on synthesis, however the application (like the iPad as a synthesis platform) should be obvious. The following is a write-up on that potential in via reader cheater:

"I'm in no way affiliated with those guys, but this thing opens so many possibilities for the synthesis aficionado that I have to let you know what's in store. Why is this cool? Simply put, it's a Kickstarter for an open platform which could enable synthesis methods that are currently not possible, unless you lug around an expensive workstation, and put them in a desktop-module style case. For those intents and purposes it's a self-contained system with a 45 GHz CPU, the size of a DVD box.

Below are some examples of synthesis methods that could work out thanks to the radically different way this thing works. Each of those is slow on current PCs and because of the parallel nature of the chip in question are tons faster to execute on it:

1. granular synthesis. Ever try to run one of those in VST? They sound better the more parts you can have. Current PCs can only run so many parts, and you need thousands per voice. This thing could easily run a polyphonic synthesizer.

Here are some demos of what you can do with a granular synthesizer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgcVr6lTzDs
http://www2.camelaudio.com/music/AlchemyAnalysisDemo02.mp3
http://www2.camelaudio.com/music/Alchemy-PresetDemo-JohnLehmkuhl.mp3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTODhn-UROc

See how Alchemy only allows 10 grains per voice? You could have an order of magnitude more, with each grain bank (Alchemy has 10) modulated separately.

Boomstar 4075 Demo

"Studio Electronics Boomstar 4075 - ARP Filter Sneak n' Peak (Take 2)

Get the .aif.zip here: http://studioelectronics.com/assets/Audio/boomstar/Boomstar-4075-GSR-1.aif.zip (for you listening pleasure only).

Greg St. Regis' clever twists and turns launched the first 4075 Boomstar past "the surly bonds of earth," via a cheap audio interface that happened to be around. More Boomstar filter type demos, live footage and markedly superior D/A Converters to follow.

Headphones mandatory. Production units are mere weeks away!

MSR

Greg St. Regis comments:

We've spent the last month debugging the prototype pcbs and perfecting the analog circuits. At this point, I felt it was good enough to give you all a sneak preview of the sound. It has about 90% of it's hardware functional. Still to be implemented is the software LFO. This is raw BoomStar recorded though a Focusrite Scarlett interface (nothing special), into Reason with a Macbook Pro. We did this in about 20 minutes, one take. I played a small Akai controller with a built in arpeggiator with my left hand and turned knobs with my right. It's "kinda cool.

It was originally about 11 minutes long; Marc did a small amount of normalizing and edited it down to 8 minutes 30 some seconds.

Put some decent headphones on and listen to huge low booms end and searingly crisp filter sweeps. I tried to take it though a full compliment of waveforms, xmod, rmod, oscillator sync, feedback looping, resonance squeals and overdrive. There is quite a bit more to come when the LFO gets in on the action.

The chassis are getting screened this week. We'll post more demos in the days to come with video included. And no, this is not an SE1X or ATCX! They sound quite good, but there is nothing like the clarity and impact of pure discrete analog with hardware envelopes.

Enjoy!
GSR

p.s. Expect to see these in the shops in about 30 days... we're in love with this little beast.

Previous MSR comments:
'Four Boomstar hardware circuits: crossmod, ringmod, feedback, AND distortion are at play here at one time or another. The idea was to stretch out... and let things get greasy and messy.'

'The "feedback" feature (a la the Minimoog) is employed throughout this track so that distortion is an effect. If you are attempting to listen to this through your laptop speakers they will be overwhelmed quickly.'"

"This video was taken with a spy camera that was hidden in the laboratory of a mad scientist. The video was smuggled out at the cost of the lives of many good men. It contains signals and sounds from a top secret weapon of mass sound that is in development. I can't even imagine what chaos and destruction would ensue if this device was unleashed upon the world."

''Meadow'' - demo with Simmons SDSV, Jupiter-8, TR-808

Published on Sep 30, 2012 by SynthManiaDotCom

"A moody, slower demo of the Simmons SDSV, the Roland TR-808, and Roland Jupiter-8 using some classic-sounding sounds. The TR-808 drives the Simmons and the JP-8's arpeggiator, the rest is improvised in real time. The filter of the JP-8 is set at -24dB and tweaked in real time. Again, due to my main audio interface being broken, I'm using the computer's internal audio card, sorry for the floor noise."

"This is the first version of Digital Keyboards groundbreaking digital synthesize released in 1982. Based on Julian Colbeck's book Keyfax, only about 800 of these were ever sold. The unit has 16-voices with 2 oscillators per voice. It has 24 pre-set programs and stereo outputs.

This unit is in very good cosmetic condition inside and out for its age. All of the knobs and buttons are intact. The case has only minor nicks. The unit powers on and 3 of the LEDs on the front panel turn on. However, the system seems to be locked up as none of the buttons function and the until does not make any sound when pressing a key."

"A month before my life concert with AKS this track, It's full of energy and based again on a simple bass sequence by the Moog Little Phatty 2 which I couldn't resist to create a song with it. Just so simple, a Moog bass sequence with some Waldorf Q and Roland Juno 106 sound, a nice Korg 05r/w accord and solo's from the DS-8, but special the solo at 1:34, the Realistic Concertmate MG-1. Enjoy the uptempo (178 bpm) music with a good audio device.
The video is a compilation of different "road" vids in some parts of Europe.

Enjoy the music

MATRIXSYNTH Is Back!

For those of you wondering what happened to the site over the last couple of days, I was locked out after attempting to delete a draft post.  I don't know if that was the definitive cause, but the site was unreachable right after I made the attempt and a good chunk of posts were unreachable.  When this happened, I immediately set up http://matrixsyntha.blogspot.com/ to continue with posts and I let people know on my Twitter and Facebook accounts as well as the top of the B, C, and P sites.  I sent notice to a couple of email lists I am on and I put up this post as the first post on the temporary site.   I want to apologize to everyone that missed the news and may have felt left in the dark.  Because I did not have the ability to edit this site, I was unable to put up a notice here. I opted not to immediately redirect matrixsynth.com and m.matrixsynth.com to the new site because I was under the impression that all search results still pointing to posts on this site where working and I didn't want to break that.  When I realized that the links were resulting in errors this morning, I immediately redirected the URLs to the new temp site.  Fortunately my case was reported to Google Engineering this morning and it appears they have fixed the problem.  I want to thank them for the quick response and I want to thank everyone out there that offered their support and encouragement.  This was a very stressful two days and every bit of support helped more than you know.  It's the difference between feeling you are completely on your own and knowing you have people at your back who actually do care about the site.  Thank you for that.

It would be difficult to find a Quadra in better condition than this one.

This item weighs around 90 pounds when shipped in its case. It will ship via UPS 2nd Day Air. The dimensions of the box will be roughly 50"x30"x16". The packaging and materials, plus one hour of labor to pack the item will cost $120. This will be added to the actual cost of shipping.

"This module is comparable with a Simmons SDS-8 Drums, but this module has 8 VCO's over 8 different channels, which can be controlled by manual mode or preset mode. Onboard presets are: 1.B-Drum: 2.Snare: 3.Hi-hat: 4.Cym-1: 5.Tom-1: 6.Tom-2: 7.Cym-2: 8.Tom-3. The manual mode has a Pulse, Trigger led, Decay (which also works on the presets), Pad Sens, VCO Sweep, VCO Pitch, Noise, (can be balanced between VCO and Noise ) Noise filter and a Click. Every channel can be balanced and has an independent volume control and a direct output. Speed can also controlled from slow to very fast, manual mode as well preset mode. Also onboard are mix outputs to pan stereo with level, bass and treble control. There is a Micro Sequencer with different patterns. It is not really a sequencer but it has more a demo function. Unfortunately it is defect, but can be fixed easily. For me, it was never important because you can't sync or control it, But every channel can be controlled by an Aux Trigger signal.  If you like Kraftwerk you will like this machine (used on the Kraftwerk album Trance Europe Express) and if you un plug the unit then tune all channels together by taking off the back panel and adjusting the trim pot’s you can create real heavy monster basses and sounds! This beastie makes the weirdest noises and is way cooler than Simmons SDS-8 and has a very strong loud output signa..."

Happy Drum Machine Halloween

Published on Sep 29, 2012 by Catabolicdj

"A spooky little Halloween live jam on three drum machines. Make sure you turn off all the lights before listening :) Outside shots were taken on within minutes of each other on a recent clear night with a full moon as a powerful storm passed by just to the north. Gear: Elektron Machinedrum UW and dual Sync-modded Boss DR-110's, one with a bass drum mod. Setup: Machinedrum generates sync and outputs it on one channel. A Y-adapter is used to split the sync signal to send to the DR-110's. DR-110's do not naturally sync to other machines, but I modified them to do so. Both DR-110's outputs are returned to the Machinedrum and added to its mix. If you listen in stereo (add fmt=32 to the end of the URL), you can hear the two separate DR-110's more clearly. All drum sounds from the DR-110's, everything else from the Machinedrum. The "guitar" sound on the Machinedrum is amplitude modulation of a high-hat sound. It is difficult to control because it generates weird harmonics, but it sounds fairly guitar-like for being a high-hat. Video is HD viewable."
