Blue Years Eve. Analog Heat Patterning Bassline Poison iM1 Odyssei Animoog Geoshred Genome

Published on Dec 31, 2016 exnihilo415

"Happy Blue Year's Eve. It's just going to be one of those years.

Glenrothes Scotch - Smooth Inspirational courage
Elektron Analog Heat - Enhancement setting
Bassline - 303 action
Poison - Bass loop
iM1 - House chords / Blues piano lead
Animoog - Wash pad
Geoshred - Guitar riff loop
Korg Odyssei - Arp lead

Purchased Geoshred a long time ago but without MIDI integration it was useless to me. It's been updated with full in and out MIDI and wow does that make nice guitar sounds.

Free Roland JX3P - Effects Sample Pack

As a follow-up to the free strings and pads sample set, Seaweed Factory has released a free JX3P effects sample pack here.

"This sample pack is the second of three in a series of packs featuring the Roland JX3P Synthesizer, released in 1983.

The second pack focuses on effect patches.

The four patches included have been multisampled directly from the synthesizer. The JX3P can produce 61 notes, starting at C3 (midi note 36) on up through C8 (midi note 96). Each note had been individually sampled for an extended period of time to capture the behaviour of the built-in chorus. Samples are labelled by patch name and midi note number. Each folder contains a full set of all the sounds the JX3P can make for that patch."

"Being 39 years old, all Korg PS-3100s will have problems if they haven't been serviced in many years (EVEN if they were never gigged and kept in a smoke-free studio).

THIS unit has been serviced and REFURBISHED by a professional synthesizer and electronics engineer with decades of experience.

The POWER SUPPLY going is a common problem with synths of this era. This one is now in good shape for years to come.

However, most important is THIS (the reason for the REFURBISH):

The plastic connectors that seat the voice cards into the backplane on this type of machine have become brittle and prone to breakage. They WILL break if they haven't been replaced, especially when shipped. When I first bought this unit that's exactly what happened: it worked fine for the seller, and the voice card connectors broke during shipping because of the brittleness with age. So even if another PS-3100 is said to be in great condition -- unless the backplane has been rebuilt it will almost certainly fail during transit or soon after.

Replacing the connects requires sourcing new compatible connectors (the old ones are long out of production) means finding a technician familiar with not just analog gear, but wire-wrapping (because that's how the harness is wired). Painstaking hours are then spent, at GREAT COST, to rebuild the backplane. If this hasn't already been done, you will end up with a busted synth -- probably as soon as it is next jostled (like during shipping when you buy it).

THE BACKPLANE ON THIS UNIT HAS BEEN REFURBISHED.

That is why, if you want to purchase a PS-3100 to PLAY it, you should buy this unit. (That is also why it is more expensive than the few others kicking around for sale.)"

The Model 200 was introduced in 1969, with a blue panel. This is is the second version, with the silver panel. Serial #05XX. This is the cleanest example you're likely to find."

The only issue that you have to be aware of is that clearing a sound still allows that sound to trigger once before cleared so you have to plan a bar ahead. Otherwise it's a fun little box to jam on.

This was recorded directly out of the machine with no post-processing or effects."

Polivoks Featured in Franz Ferdinand's Lucid Dreams?

Uploaded on Feb 4, 2009 Cameron Meldrum

This one came in on the AH email list as an example of the Polivoks sound, specifically the filter. 4:40 on is worth a listen to get a feel for the synth. According to the poster: "Sounds mostly LP setting for the bassline throughout, but a BP sweep at 4:40 layering into LP output panning around in stereo. You definitely want to wear headphones on this one"

I don't own a Polivoks but I of course have heard plenty of demos, and I do have an Industrial Music Electronics, Harvestman Polivoks eurorack filter and it definitely goes there. See the demo by Dave Skipper below. This is one of my favorite aggressive filters. It and the Frostwave Resonator (based on the early KORG MS20 filter), can strip the paint off of walls with a bit of resonance.

General video description from YouTube:
"This is the official album version of track 10 from Franz Ferdinand's third album: 'Tonight: Franz Ferdinand'. You can buy the album from iTunes here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/ton..."

Volca Keys + Volca FM

Published on Dec 31, 2016 Alba Ecstasy

"Small keys, beautiful sounds! It is not a secret anymore, for many of us, that the Volca series sounds very nice even they're packed in such small boxes with such tiny keys and tiny knobs. What are these, synths for ants?! I bet if ants could play keyboards, would be very delighted to have them!
...
Yeah, I had some fun this morning with Volca Keys and Volca FM and I kept the mood: still, today is ending a very bad year, right?! Let's be happy about that!
...
Volca Keys is in UNISON mode and play a little sequence, and is getting the reverb from MI Clouds.
Volca FM plays a pad I made a few weeks ago and I used Roland Demora for delay. Also is sending time clock to Volca Keys - a really useful thing, to set the Keys on an exactly BPM!

I wish all of you a Happy New Year and may all your wishes comes true in 2017!

Did you hear it? If not, listen to the brass parts closely. Note this song was released in 1973, on Houses of the Holy. I was just listening to the album minutes ago, in the background tonight with my wife. She asked me what the synth was. I asked her what synth? She said the brassy parts. I told her I didn't think it was a synth considering the year, and that it must just be muted or processed trumpets. She said it was not trumpets and had to be a synth, or some organ or something. Well, it turns out she was not only right, but it's something I never would have guessed in a million years. I still can't believe it to be honest with you - it's like it's from the bizarro, alternate world of synths. If you don't know, listen closely and see if you can guess it for yourself one more time. Hint: It's not Moog. What is it? You'll find the answer below, and if you were somehow able to identify it based on the character of the synth, you are the Kwisatz Haderach of synth gurus.

Dalek Arduino Synthesizer 2016

Published on Dec 30, 2016 Martin Orman
Update: Re-Published on Jan 5, 2017

"I picked up this Dalek from a car boot sale so it's a bit battered. I installed a synthesizer written onto an ATMEGA 328P chip (Arduino Uno clone that I built) inside. It runs on battery or 9v DC mains adapter in. There are two mono outputs i.e. 3.5mm and 1/4". It's possible to run both outputs together in order to set up two audio channels in your DAW that will create a stereo output. This is recorded into Ableton 9 through a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 with standard reverb, compression and Reaktor Molekular 'Plagiarism' added to give some additional harmonics."

Note: if you are interested in one or the instructions you can ping Martin Orman over on YouTube for details.

New description from Jan 5, 2017 upload:

"I converted this Dalek into a granular synthesizer. Inside is an ATMEGA 328P clone of an Arduino Uno that I built. It has two line level outputs and runs on 5v to 9v D.C. from battery or mains adapater."

Interesting note regarding the screen. You wouldn't think it tied to the OS like this:

"Only 'issue' is that the LCD screen currently has 2 lines of pixels missing. Access told me to re-load the OS, and once I did that, it restored the screen. But then it went back. So, there is no impact on anything, everything works as it should, and the screen is totally readable. If you want, you can hassle with reloading the software, maybe you'll have better luck than I did."

Overcast Minilogue Ambience (with Clouds)

Published on Dec 30, 2016 Nick Jackson

"Today I figured it was time for my Minilogue and Mutable modules to mingle once again.

The Minilogue is being sequenced by it's own internal sequencer - just a simple repeating chord pattern. I've found that the Mini's sequencer is very flawed and quirky, but sometimes that can lead to some very nice results. It seems to mess up the chords that I program into it, sometimes removing notes or even adding extra notes an octave up. It's almost like it gets confused as to what octave to play when it has to think fast. So that's what happened here, and I really liked to way it ended up sounding.

Mini then goes out to Mutable Instruments Ripples and then into Clouds, which is having its' Freeze, Density, Size, and Texture modulated by a Uoki Toki 4LFO. The slow modulations add subtle changing characteristics to the sound and keeps things interesting. I think I need some more LFO's..

The mix comes out of Clouds and into a Strymon BlueSky for some shimmer reverb. I like to use the BlueSky with the reverb time almost all the way up, which really adds this lush ambient wash underneath everything, almost like a droning pad.

It sounded so nice I decided to just leave it alone for a bit, but around the 4-minute mark I begin to tweak the patch a bit. I started playing with the Mini's built in delay feedback, and tweaking the Density of Clouds a bit. I quickly realized that this could get out of hand fast so instead I moved over to the BlueSky and began very slowly cranking up the reverb mix. I really like doing this, as it almost 'disintegrates' the piece into this big washy reverby mess. I like big washy reverby messes.

Around the 12 minute mark my camera stopped recording like it pretty much always does, but I decided to keep the audio rolling like I pretty much always do. One day I'll upload a real nice professional quality video with no technical difficulties, but today is just simply not that day.

As always, I hope you can sit and enjoy these sounds for a little bit. Thank you very much for taking the time to listen."

Overcast Minilogue Ambience #2

Published on Dec 30, 2016

"Another riff I stumbled upon while playing with the Minilogue today.

This is the same exact setup as my video from earlier today..Minilogue, sequenced by it's own sequencer, into Ripples, into Clouds, with a Uoki Toki 4LFO modulating the Freeze, Density, Texture, and Size of Clouds, then into a Strymon BlueSky for some shimmer reverb.

As always, thanks for watching, hope you enjoy!"
