Edgar's Dilemma

"Perplexed by an increasingly impatient audience, Edgar began to cogitate about the future of his 'Modular Madness Symphony Unplugged' tour."

Fun (and funny) bit of synth art from New Man Studios' Artist Shop. These are for sale. You can find the mug here, print here, phone case here, and finally the t-shirt here.

Nice!

P.S. You can also find New Man Studios on BandCamp here.

A 60's Moog Dream (breath Controlled)

"So here is another quick demo of using just my Moog Mother 32 with 1 addition which is a Manhattan MA32 Filter...otherwise this is pure Moog Mom 32 AND most of this is being breath controlled by a Pulplogic breath controller tile (still prototyped). I could not do this without Pulplogic's wonderful work on this breath controller tile...for all you Eurorack people."

A Review on the Electronic Music Works WCS-1x Synthesizer

You can find the full review on Creative Tech Nerds here.

"If a Moog Modular had babies, they might look and sound like the EMW WCS-1x. If you're looking for a truly distinctive synth with a beefy "Moog-like" sonic signature, you need to give the WCS-1x a serious look. At a street price of just under $300.00 ( U.S. dollars ), the WCS-1x also happens to be an incredible bargain. Tip to the wise: Snag a couple of these mini- monsters while they're still being made!"

DX5 playing Depeche Mode "Any Second Now" (Instrumental)

Published on Feb 28, 2017 DX5

"Backtrack recorded on Pro Tools. Most of the sounds are from the Roland Promars, including the first noise snare (the original song was recorded at the time Vince Clarke used his Jupiter 4 with same filter and VCO as the one in the Promars).

Keyboards:
Upper: Roland Promars MRS-2
Mid: Roland JP-8000

Backtrack played on a Revox B77 MkII with BASF tape.
Original track composed by Vince Clarke.
Performed here by DX5 Jose Maria Bara
* There is a "flutter" effect, noticeable at the beginning, due to Revox mechanical limitations (I tried to dump the backtrack on two different units with the same results)"

"It is in excellent condition with all of the pots, buttons and LCD functioning properly. There is very slight cosmetic wear - the kind that would come with a unit of this age that has been well looked after and used exclusively in a smoke-free studio.

In 2016, it was upgraded by Jay Lemak of Synths When (Toronto) with a triordial power supply. This alleviated a slight but noticeable mechanical noise and provides all of the assurance that a reliable, modern power supply has to offer."

Vintage Analog Synthesizer RMIF Opus: Sound Demo

Published on Feb 28, 2017 Najvrtson

Here's something most have likely never seen before, a vintage soviet RMIF Opus. I believe this is the first one to be featured here.

"The tune (russian folk song Polyushka Polye - despite the fact, that the instrument was made in Riga, Latvia) was entirely recorded on RMIF Opus, except of drums (JVC KB-700) and some reverb and delay effects. Opus was made cca in 1988, but technically wise it was obsolete at the time. It is based on divide-down technology, but has very nice filter (LPF, BPF and HPF with resonance), excellent chorus unit, ring modulator and some other fine features. Enjoy its sound!"

Uli Behringer on Next Steps - New Affordable Clones of Classic Vintage Synths & More

This one in via Soviet Space Child.  Further below you will find a post from Uli Behringer on what he plans next.  It is pretty much in line with what he said in his recent interview posted here on the 23rd. Note he mentions bringing old classics back along with new creations. An interesting side note, is it appears Music Group IP, which Behringer falls under, made logo and trademark grabs for Oberheim. Via dluther:

"The Oberheim logo and trademarks seem to have been filed by Music Group after Gibson turned it over to Wells Fargo, and it expired:

USPTO Assignments on the Web

Then Music Group IP made a claim on it on Dec 8 of last year (awaiting examination

Trademark Status & Document Retrieval

And Gibson must have caught wind of what's going on and is now trying to retrieve it on behalf of Bank of America as a "Security Interest:"

USPTO Assignments on the Web

It's interesting to note they filed these trademarks under the Music Group IP Inc. name instead of some shell organization. Given the specificity of the Oberheim marks reserved, I'd venture their next big synth will be an 'homage' to the OB-Xa, and possibly an OSCar. Given their treatment of the Juno-106, it might be something special..."

And here is what Uli Behringer had to say regarding what's coming:

"Hello everyone, please allow me to chime in.

Since the introduction of our first synth, the DeepMind12, it has now become the best selling synthesizer at the world's largest retailers Thomann and Sweetwater. Our team is so excited that we have decided to go "all in".

What does that mean?

We have since hired 20 incredibly talented engineers and synth experts, and we're hiring many more. In fact we're looking for passionate software and hardware engineers for our Innovation Center in Manchester, UK. Please feel free to drop me a note and CV if you're interested...

Our dream is to cover every musical and technological angle, which includes analog and digital synths, samplers, romplers, drum machines - you name it.

We have also taken on the challenge to see if we can make a really cool analog synth for US$ 49 retail. That's not easy, but we'll give it a try! We like to make analog synths available especially for kids so they can learn to play an electronic instrument.

We'll be reviving both legacy synths based on authentic designs and original components but we're also heavily investing in research in the areas of cutting-edge granular and waveform synthesis, etc. in order to innovate and create something completely new.

Many people have asked us to revive synth jewels from the past and make them affordable so everyone can own one. This very much resonates with me because when I was a kid, I spent hours in stores playing and admiring those synths - however I couldn't afford them which was tremendously frustrating.

Frankly, I never understood why someone would charge you US$ 4,000 for a MiniMoog, when the components just cost around US $200.

We at Midas and Behringer believe in bringing these instruments back and making them affordable so everyone can play and enjoy them.

In order to introduce young people to the world of synthesizers, we have also hired lots of university fresh grads for our engineering departments - great guys that have discovered and now love building synths.
I can honestly say that this the best vibe we have ever had in our company and I am tremendously proud of these guys who put incredible effort and time in designing those synths.

As always we love to hear from you, learn what your thoughts are and what you want us to make. Building great things for customers is what we love and the purpose why we exist.

Thank you for all the fantastic support!

Uli"

The Micro-TS – Keyfob Touch Synthesizer

If you think the Tiny-TS is small then think again.

The Micro-TS is keyfob sized, 61x41mm but still features the same specs as the Tiny-TS.

It runs on 3V so a CR2016 button cell works just fine.

The analog knobs have a trim potentiometer footprint.

Output is a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack.

It still has CV/Gate outputs but they are just pads on the PCB edge.

Available from 1st of March.

Only 50 available in the first batch."

Moog Model 15 Modular Synthesizer

Published on Feb 27, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"A bass patch on the monolithic Moog Model 15. This 5U modular system is built by hand to the specs of the original 1973 system. The patch uses the sawtooth waves from the 921b oscillators mixed with white noise that is run through the fixed filter bank. This mix is then run through the legendary 904a low pass ladder filter which is modulated by an envelope and 921 oscillator used as an LFO. The filter goes into a VCA which is controlled by another envelope generator. A Korg SQ-1 is used to sequence the bass line and a Volca Beats provides the drums."
