Structured Improvisation for Analog Monophonic Synthesizer: “Overdubbing Grandmother”

Published on Apr 13, 2019 Samuel William Novak

"A structured improv for Moog Grandmother. I first met Grandmother on Thursday. Needless to say she inspired me to write for her. This piece overdubs successive improvisations, each appearing in the order recorded.

Precomposed materials:
Three preprogrammed sequences played by the initial part, serving as both a textural bedrock and to articulate form,
A gradual increase in tempo,
The general textural roles of the other two voices: one mostly melodic and in a high register to balance the low register of the sequences (I’m most happy with the performance of this part) and one to inject an element of unpredictability to balance the repetition of the sequences.

The rest, including all the modulation and patch manipulation, was left to the moment.
