Scramble Everything - Pitch Scrambling Effect from Optotronics

Published on Apr 21, 2018 e j

From the makers of Oi, Kant!

"purchase here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/59534...

Scramble Everything is a strange little synthesiser: both sound generator (it generates random sequences) and an effects unit, a pitch shifter.

The scramble suit in ‘Scanner Darkly’ was “an invention of the Bell laboratories, conjured up by accident by an employee named S. A. Powers... Basically, his design consisted of a multifaceted quartz lens hooked up to a million and a half physiognomic fraction-representations of various people: men and women, children, with every variant encoded and then projected outward in all directions equally onto a superthin shroudlike membrane large enough to fit around an average human. In any case, the wearer of a scramble suit was Everyman and in every combination (up to combinations of a million and a half sub-bits) during the course of each hour. Hence, any description of him - or her - was meaningless.”

Scramble Everything is the scramble suit of synthesisers. Whatever source you use on the input, the output will be completely scrambled, human and non-human speech-like sounds.
The main star of Scramble Everything is the pitch filter effect unit based on robotic voice modulator IC – HT8950 – which can be used either together with the internal random sequencer, or as a standalone effects unit. You can then, following Philip K. Dick, use any input source and scramble the shit out of it. Does the output still contain remains of the original sound? If you want to jump between two realities you can use the special slider that will easily transport you to the other side. Spooky! Can it get more sci-fi? Yes. The filter’s frequency not only can be controlled with the knob, but also with the light. Scramble Everything contains an RGB light source, and its colour sequence (controlled by the internal random sequencer) changes the tone of the filter. The scramble tone then depends on the intensity of each colour (red, green and blue). Additionally Scramble Everything contains three switches for each colour, so you can decide if you want to have smooth or abrupt transitions between the colours.
You can also control the amount of slide between the steps, switch from staccato to legato and vice-versa, control the pitch of the sequencer and its frequency range.
You can also use the random trigger output to trigger external sound sources.

If you want to know more about scrambled realities, please have a look at the Scramble Reading Pack here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/0gbiwvc7agw...

Scramble Everything runs on either 9 or 12V power supply, 600mA minimum. You can also use a 9V battery.
It has 5.5mm x 2.1mm power barrel (center negative): https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/czUAAO...

Scramble Everything was designed by Ewa Justka. Some of the conceptual framework of the machine is a result of a collaboration between Ewa Justka and Roc Jiménez de Cisneros."

New Entropic Synth 2018 (Arduino nano & Mozzi library).

Published on Apr 9, 2018 Biyi Amez

"At the heart of Entropic Synth, an Arduino Nano running the Mozzi library. Developed by Tim Barrass, Mozzi is a collection of pre-programmed modules that turn Arduino into a full-fledged synthesizer. The library includes oscillators, filters, and several math objects that enable Arduino to efficiently execute a variety of complex mathematical operations. I must say that I was rather skeptical of the sound quality before trying Mozzi out myself, but the very first sounds came out of my tiny Arduino immediately prove me wrong!

The sound of Entropic Synth is generated through a WavePacket synthesis module, which is essentially modeled after Miller Steven Puckette's example in the PureData tutorials (F14.wave.packet.pd). I have added a number of control options, including the randomization of several parameters, the scale-wise control for the oscillator frequency, and being able to adjust the bitrate of the output to create a nice bit-crusher effect. Using only seven knobs (one of the knobs is simply a passive volume control, while the remaning six are connected to analog inputs on Arduino), the variety of sounds that comes out of this mini synthesizer is very impressive.

Rebel Technology Introduces the Magus, Wizard, & Alchemist on Kickstarter

Magus Modular Synthesizer Toolkit 2018 Published on Apr 5, 2018

"Algorithms are modern day magic spells. Add magic to your music with the Magus, a patchable, programmable synthesizer toolkit."

Magus KickBox Demo Published on Apr 4, 2018 Rebel Technology

"KickBox is a groovebox patch running on the Magus synthesizer toolkit. It makes a beat with hats and a kick, and adds a virtual analogue subtractive synth voice with a killer 8-pole resonant low pass filter.

Realtime parameter tweaking and 24 analogue patch points give you complete creative control over how the sound is produced."

Wizard PolySub Demo Published on Apr 4, 2018 Rebel Technology

"PolySub is a polyphonic subtractive synth patch running on the Wizard. PolySub has 8 voices true polyphony with virtual analogue oscillators, waveshape and PWM morph, 8-pole resonant filter and ADSR envelopes.
In this demo it is sequenced with the CV and gate outputs of a Korg SQ-1 but it can also be played by connecting a MIDI device."

Alchemist Ping Pong Delay Demo Published on Apr 4, 2018 Rebel Technology

"Ping Pong Delay running on Alchemist, synchronised to the trigger output of a TR808 drum machine. The trigger keeps all the beats tight and allows the delay to bounce anything from 16th notes and triplets to full bars around the stereo space."

Check out the KickStarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

"The Magus, Wizard and Alchemist are all built on the Rebel Technology OpenWare firmware and can run the same patch programs as two of our existing products: the OWL Pedal and OWL Modular. This means that our entire library of more than 200 patch programs is ready to use right now!"

Magus Synthesizer Toolkit Prototype

"Algorithms are the magic potions and spells of the modern day. In electronic music, they make the wooshes, booms, squeals, screams and bops that might have us contemplate the universe, reach personal insight, or dance like mad for days on end. Join us on a journey to create ever more powerful algorithms, and to make them open and available to everyone. We already have a community of hundreds of talented synthesists sharing their work. Let's make it bigger, let's make it better, let's do it together!

The Magus is like having a compact modular synthesizer without being limited by the modules you've got in it.

Unlike traditional synthesizers, the Magus doesn't confine itself to a fixed function or paradigm. Whether you want granular, additive, FM, subtractive, spectral, chaotic or stochastic synthesis, Magus gives you the freedom to pick the right algorithm for the job and then lets you loose to patch up a storm.

Enjoy the creative power of a hardware synthesizer with the flexibility of audio plugins.

If our existing library of algorithms doesn't do it for you, you can even create your own, for truly unbounded creative freedom. And you can use any one of more than two hundred patches from our library as a starting point. Patches can be authored in Max Gen, Pure data, FAUST or C++, giving you an impressive range of powerful musical programming tools to choose from."

Wizard Minisynth Prototype

"The Magus' little brother is the Wizard. It runs the same patches and is also patchable as well as programmable. This means that you can change the signal flow on the fly and connect it to other kit. It is incredibly compact but still sports five assignable control knobs and four buttons, and a total of six patch points. Like the Magus it has both USB MIDI device and host connections so that you can plug your favourite controller straight in - be it keyboard, drum pads, sequencer, grid, or multidimensional controller. It makes an excellent stand-alone synth or effects unit and has huge integration capabilities."

Alchemist Microsynth Prototype

"The Alchemist is the baby of the family, but it packs a powerful punch. With four knobs, two trigger buttons, one mode button and trigger and CV inputs it amazingly still fits in your hand.

All three devices have a USB socket and can be powered by USB or by an external DC supply."

Paper Jamz Pro Mic Aetherial Noise Generator

circuitbent feedback box Published on Mar 31, 2018 paul tas

via Error Instruments

"This is an aleatoric aethereal electronic noise generator.

The original sound comes out by plugging a mic or aux, and the signal is processed by an effects processor which is pretty amazing for a toy.

My bents allow all the feedbacks to be self generated, so it becomes a constantly evolving mysterious drone.

The audio input is also radically effected by the feedback noise.

BENTS:
- High pitch feedback
- Low pitch signal (sub)"

And via Wikipedia:

"Paper Jamz was a collection of musical toys, produced by WowWee. Introduced in 2010, Paper Jamz were paper thin musical toys, which included guitars, microphones, keytars, drum kits, and amplifiers. They were also marketed as 'Instant Rock Star' instruments.

There were no physical buttons, knobs or keys used while playing the instruments. Instead, the battery-operated instruments featured a printed, touch-and-gesture enabled surface. The toy company produced Snoop Dogg themed guitars in 2011.[1]"

Oi, Kant! by Optotronics

Published on Mar 14, 2018 e j

"general info:

Oi, Kant! is a sort of drum machine. Sort of. Drum-ish machine, as I like to call it. And it’s a weird one. It has 3 voices: drum, bass line and cymbal, though they all have their own Kant-related names, as do the rest of parts on this machine. It also has a resonant filter which can effectively be treated as a fourth voice.

All of these voices, predominantly based on CMOS semiconductor chips, can be sequenced using one of the built-in sequencers. Yes, sequencerS, plural. Four of them. Why? Well, why not? These sequencers are completely independent but they are synced to a master clock.

Oi, Kant! also offers you an external clock input so you can control the sequencers tempo by sending pulses from other hardware. In fact, all of the voices can also be sequenced from external sequencers, if you’d like to do that.

Oi, Kant! offers individual outputs for each of its voices. Please note there is no master output, so in order to listen to them all at once you need to use a mixer or audio interface.

Oi, Kant! runs on 9v DC (negative tip, 600mA) or 12v DC, and it can also be powered with a 9v battery. The power input socket is located on the top left corner of the board, labelled 9VDC-.

DIRTY ELECTRONICS MUTESYNTH 2

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Dirty Electronics Mute Synth II (MSII) is a hand-held synth and sequencer.

At the core of the instrument is a versatile mini patchbay that provides expansion and modification permutations and a grid-like visual representation of patched parameters using coloured jumpers.

The patchbay encourages a particular interaction with the instrument and playfulness.

The printed circuit board artwork, black and silver finish, has multiple touch electrodes in the form of small squares that provide a labyrinth of possible connections and resulting behaviours.

Different rhythmic sequences are created through hybrid 4-bit binary coding, feedback loops and bit bashing.

The graphical artwork for the printed circuit board was done in collaboration with Adrian Shaughnessy. The Mute Synth II is Dirty Electronics’ second hand-held synth with Mute Records, the first being created in 2011.

One of the main ideas behind the Mute Synth II was to consider the dissemination of a musical idea other than through recorded fixed media, and to explore the intersection between sound object and artwork etching.

The synth also presents the notion of writing music through electronics and code.

The Mute Synth II is a statement against MPEG culture and places an onus on active participant rather than passive consumer. The synth has been born out of Dirty Electronics’ ongoing commitment to DIY approaches and noise aesthetics, and serves as a catalyst for experimenting with electronic sound. Additional modules and hacks allow for the instrument to be customised.

Features: Noise generator Feedback Oscillator Waveshaping (triangle - square) Buffered output Sequencer External clock option Touch and knob/potentiometer controls Mini patchbay Dotmatrix display (external module) PCB artwork Bend and hack points Expansion board capability Mini jack/headphone output Battery powered 9v (battery not included)"
