Fragment - Granular/Additive soundscapes & pixels-based delay

Published on Dec 10, 2017 Fragment Synthesizer

"Fragment is an online collaborative additive / spectral / granular live-coding web. platform, the spectrum is created by a live GPU script, the generated visual is then converted to audio by an additive/granular/spectral process.

Fragment is a programmable noise-of-all-kinds software and excel at sound design by combining two of the most powerful synthesis process with a live coding aspect, Fragment also excel at visuals.

This is a video of a live additive + granular ambient soundscapes session which demonstrate pixels-based delay and the soon to be released update of the improved granular synthesis/sound engine.

The video also demonstrate some kind of "vector based synthesis" by using a XY widget in Open Stage Control (through OSC) with the 4 channels volume mapped onto the widget axis resulting in cross-fading of the 4 channels.

The sound in this video is produced by 4 audio server instances (distributed synthesis) on a single i7 6700 machine, the overall CPU load can be seen on the top left corner along with number of partials for each channels, the load generally sit around 5% with peak at ~30% @28:00.

Most of the sounds heard in this video has a delay applied with a simple pixels-based delay (4 lines) which mean that the delay come from Fragment, not from the DAW, this delay can be heard on several sections and can be differentiated by its parameters being tweaked, notably around @22:00.

The granular synthesis engine was battle-tested and improved, many bugs were fixed resulting in big improvement on the sound quality, moreover pitch shifting is now implemented with linear resampling.

The audio server was also improved and is now able to drop frames meaning that if the client is too late sending its pixels frames, the audio server compensate by retaining its last state, this improve the audio quality greatly when few frames are dropped, which is to be expected with browser reflow or high load, frames drop can be heard extensively in videos previously released, there is now near zero audio issues due to frames drop.

The update should be released this month.

9 samples are loaded and used in this video, all of them are single sounds of real or virtual instruments.

Moog Mother-32 and Modular Synth

Published on Dec 5, 2016 micAmic

Playlist:

1. 'Thinking modular" played on Moog Mother-32
Mother-32 playing MIDI sequences with some beats from Renoise. Sequences programmed with midi keyboard with velocity linked to VCF and VCA. Seqences looped with ditto.

2. Interstellar played on Moog Mother-32 and modular synth
Interstellar movie main theme played on Moog Mother-32 and simple modular synth.
I've routed two synths to different parts of keyboard and thanks to that I have 2 voice polyphony. There is also grand piano routed to part of the keyboard.
Modular is playing through Moog MF Delay and Mother-32 is improved a bit by Valhalla reverb.

3. 'Tirana' played on Moog Mother-32 and modular synth
'Tirana' played on Moog Mother-32 and modular synth. Main melody played on Tirana by Xaoc devices and MI Rings overdriven by Moog MF Delay. Tirana was randomized by sequencer from Mother-32.

Fragment Synthesizer - Various sounds additive / granular

Published on Nov 4, 2017 Fragment Synthesizer

"Fragment is a collaborative additive / spectral / granular live-coding web. platform, the spectrum is created by a live GPU script, the generated visual is then converted to audio by an additive or granular process.

Fragment is able to produce high-quality fast additive and granular synthesis simultaneously with re-synthesis support, it has many features making it a bliss to produce any kind of sounds or visuals.

This is a demonstration video of a multitude of sounds created within Fragment, mostly additive synthesis (90% of them) but some parts are granular, this also demonstrate granular re-synthesis @6:54 with more than 400 layered grains and vocoder effects @3:11, some parts (the beginning) use distributed synthesis mode and are able to play more than 1200 simultaneous partials on a i7 CPU with 4 synthesis server.

Small amount of reverb/delay effect added inside Renoise DAW, low-pass filters are used on granular sounds because Fragment play the grains sample as-is, MIDI sequences are coming from Renoise.

"This is a practice session for a live gig I recorded a couple of weeks ago. My wife and I usually perform as Laser Pig, but I was flying solo this time. There are a few rough edges while I warm up!

I'm sequencing a Nord Lead 12 voice, a Yamaha Cs2x, using a mini KP for delay and samples and beats mostly coming from Renoise 3.1 on an old netbook.

Live Synth Jam 43:Korg Volca, Roland Boutique, Renoise

Published on Jun 9, 2016 Todd Smith

"The Roland Boutique JP-08 arrives !! This jam uses the tracker based sequencer, Renoise. I've been ripping my studio apart left and right trying to find the best setup for me and Renoise. In this quickie I only use the Korg Volca Bass, Roland Boutique JU-06 and Roland Boutique JP-08. Renoise supplies the drum samples and all the sequencing. Renoise is slaved to Ableton via Rewire, Ableton handles the multi track recording. I kept most of the gear out because I wanted to focus on the Roland Boutique sounds. The Korg Volca Bass Supplies the bass. The Roland Boutique JU-06 takes on the lead synthesizer sequence and the Roland Boutique JP-08 handles the pad In this jam my max loop with Renoise is 128 steps. I plan on controlling the drum mutes in future jams but with this one I just laid everything like one big track and played live over it. After this jam I have a very good idea how my final setup will be with Renoise. Thank you for watching, please subscribe.

Live Korg Volca Jam 35 : Microkorg, Korg Volca & Renoise

Published on Apr 20, 2016 Todd Smith

"I've taken a few days to explore Renoise more and try to get it work with Ableton the way I like it and pretty much nailed it last night. In this jam I don't push past 16 bars but I'm running a 16 bar 4 pattern loop that cuts the Volca Bass every other pattern so I take small advantage of external sequencer. I'm using Renoise to mute my VST and sample based tracks with PC keyboard. The Korg Volca Bass , Korg Volca Keys and Korg Volca Beats are sequenced by midi with Renoise. I use the local knobs to control the Korg Volca parameters and volume. The Korg Volca Beats only supplies the high hats , the snare and kick are samples from Renoise. I used A few VST's for background sequences. The ReFX Nexus and LennarDigital Sylenth1 are sequenced and muted by Renoise. The Microkorg is played live and supplies a pad and FX.

Laser Pig live rig synth jam - Renoise, Nord Lead, CS2x

Published on Apr 26, 2015 ChrisLody

"Testing my new and improved live rig for Laser Pig, one of the music projects i have on the go. I've gigged with a setup almost like this before but i've now added an audio interface and switched from SEQ 24 to Renoise 3 running in Lubuntu. My Netbook is only a 1.2Ghz dual core yet Renoise runs amazing well.

So in this setup i'm sequencing midi to the Nord Lead 1 from Renoise which is also doing a few percussion samples. The Nord is routed through Renoise's Convolver reverb through a nice little 'Pulse' 2 in 2 out usb interface i found on a carboot sale yesterday for 4 whole pounds. I've programmed my CS2x to play a sort of digital piano type tone, something that it seems to be very good at, especially when a subtle bit of LFO is added as each voice has it own LFO that are not synced so things get stirred up very nicely. I've added a bit of the Mini Kaoss pad's delay to the CS2x too. I'm cueing patterns live in Renoise with a Korg Nano Kontrol. Everything is mixed through a Xenyx 1002 mixer and the recorded on my desktop machine.

All in all i find this setup very intuitive and fun to use, plenty of power but not so many options that nothing gets done.

Circuit bent Monotribe (modified with midi in, drum decay and separate out)

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The unit is a great little music making machine, and is in great condition. About the modifications:

MIDI IN: Recieve notes for the synth part and triggers the different rythm parts independently, control all LFO parameters and EG shape.

DRUM OUTPUT: BD,SD,HH together. It has always the same level output (with earphones connected directly sounds good) even if the Rythm volume knob is set to the minimum. When a 3'5mm (1/8'') jack is connected rythm part disappears from the global output. This modification is good for processing the synth and rythm parts separately becouse you've each one in different outputs so you can use a delay with synth part and a compressor with rythm part running in parallel.

DRUM DECAY: It has 2 pots for HiHats decay and SnareNoise decay. The knobs controls BD decay and SnareFrame decay.

It has a few little marks (seeable on the photos) made during modifications process. The mods are incredible and completely advance the unit, but please note that to really push this in the direction it needs to go and listen to this through nice big speakers (especially for the decay which is awesome on a big system).

It comes with original box and manual ( which is what it comes with originally). Updated to latest OS..."

USB Synth VST Ribbon Controller : Straytechnologies oneString

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Inspired by the simplicity of the one-string “Diddley-Bow” of Delta Blues, the oneString controller is a super-simple and highly-expressive controller for laptop musicians. It’s designed to be an easy to construct, open-source USB MIDI ribbon controller for musicians looking for a new way to perform and compose.

USB Powered, allowing for only one cable. This means easy setup and portability in our wire-filled lives.
Uses a standard MIDI signal over USB allowing compatibility with almost all music software packages. (ANYTHING that takes keyboard input: Reason, reNoise, Energy XT, Ableton, FL Studio, Max-MSP, PureData… the list is endless!)
Uses free and open-source drivers to allow the most economical cross-platform (WIN, OSX, LINUX) solution.
Uses a minimum of parts, making it cheap and allowing for simple build instruction that even a beginner builder can finish in a day.

Launchpad Step Sequencer Lauflicht 3 - Full Details

This is a follow-up to the video posted here.

"An upgrade of the step sequencer "Lauflicht" for the Novation Launchpad to the version 3 has been released. The plugin for Renoise is a moving light, multitrack and multitimbral step sequencer with 8, 16 or 32 steps, turning your Launchpad(s) into a hardware step sequencer. It was especially designed for editing beats, melodies and patterns without the mouse in order to allow an intuitive workflow in the studio or an excellent possibility to perform live.

The version 3 has two new core features: multiple Launchpads support and a new pattern load and mix mode in real time.

If more than one Launchpad is connected to the computer, the plugin will detect all Launchpads automatically and cascade them to one big hardware step sequencer. Two Launchpads will result into a hardware 16 step sequencer and four Launchpads will result into a hardware 32 step sequencer. With the different note resolution modes and unlimited tracks this setup leads to a huge level of granularity and in-depth step sequencing.

The pattern load mode enhances the variety of sequencing in live situations. While the current pattern plays, it is possible to switch between up to 16 different patterns instantly by pressing an appropriate button on the Launchpad. This makes it easy to arrange and build up a new song sequentially. To mix between patterns, or to create a seamless transition or a surprising break in your performance also a split pattern can be selected, which contains the half of the available tracks, and loaded into the currently playing pattern. In the studio or on the stage - it is really fun to switch between the patterns.

Besides these two new features, a lot of other improvements found their way into version 3. For example, presets for the control matrix can be stored to modulate up to eight different parameters of every single step of each track, like Filter-Cutoff, Delay, note value or any other controllable midi or vsti parameter.

Features:
- 8, 16 or 32 steps
- multiple Launchpads support: automatic detection of up to four Launchpads
- unlimited tracks, unlimited patterns
- set up for each track a sample, sample bank, a vst instrument or a Midi instrument of your choice
- chord mode: insert up to 3 notes in one track
- variable note resolution: 3 modes switchable (for example edit 1/2, 1/4 or 1/16 notes)
- quick clear: delete all steps of a track at once
- complete bidrectional Launchpad integration: all changes made with the Launchpad are visible in the software plugin at once and vice versa
- autoload: new patterns are loaded into the plugin/Launchpad display automatically on pattern change
- all parameters are editable during play in the plugin in real time
- keyboard mode: create melodies with a virtual keyboard in an intuitive and easy way
- powerful controller matrix: assign up to eight parameters to every single step, like filter cutoff, delay, velocity or any other controllable parameter and change them in real-time. Also the note values of the steps can be controlled.
- pattern load mode: switch between up to sixteen stored patterns in real time or even mix the tracks of two different patterns.
- easy installation of the plugin, all available Launchpads are detected automatically.

The Lauflicht Launchpad Step Sequencer 3 Plugin costs 24 Euro and is available on http://www.stepsequencer.net. It runs on runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and there is also a new free demo version for the Launchpad available.
Requirements:
- Novation Launchpad(s)

- Lauflicht Step Sequencer Launchpad Edition"
