Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman's A Troll's Story

PRESS RELEASE:

"Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman have released a web-based children's story called "Troll's Story".

Perrey and Countryman wrote the text for the children's book and scored all the original music, and they have made both the text and music available for free downloading on the internet.

It can be found here

The narrator for the children's story is Tricia Meier-Countryman. The project is a spin-off from Perrey and Countryman's recent Oglio Records CD "The Happy Electropop Music Machine." The duo re-edited and re-scored their original synthesizer music to fit the story, which was written and inspired by their original "Troll's Story" music from the Oglio CD.

Perrey and Countryman are making the project a free download, to be enjoyed by children of all ages.

To find out more about "The Happy Electropop Music Machine", go to: link

Artist Information:
Jean Jacques Perrey: Synthesizer.com synthesizer, Moog synthesizers and Ondioline Dana Countryman: Synthesizers.com synthesizer.

Jean Jacques Perrey is a legend in the electronic music field as a pioneer of that genre. He was the SECOND musician to ever own and record with the Moog Synthesizer, back in 1967. His music has been sampled by countless popular acts, including Ice T, Gangstarr and Fatboy Slim. At age 78, he is still creating and still touring.

Perrey's musical partner is arranger and musician Dana Countryman, who co-composed the music and co-wrote the story for "Troll's Story."
Perrey and Countryman released their first CD for Oglio Records, "The Happy Electropop Music Machine" in 2006.
It is available on Amazon.com and on iTunes.com, among many other outlets.

The duo are currently writing and recording their next CD for Oglio Records, due out in the summer of 2009. In the last year and a half, Perrey and Countryman have performed in Berlin, Seattle, San Francisco, Hollywood, Amsterdam, Russia, France and Norway. They are heading off to England next."

You can also find more info on Jean-Jacques Perrey and Dana Countryman in these previous posts.

Update: some notes on the instruments used via Dana:
"We predominately used my big modular from Synthesizers.com. We also used my Korg MS-2000R a lot. My loyal DX-7 was used (sparingly), especially for the bass line in the "Furioso Disco" section. I also love it for it's "organ" sounds and bells. Jean-Jacques played his trademark Ondioline for the solo in the first segment ("Morning Theme".) In addition, we ran samples through Reason, mostly for JJ's crazy "tape loops". Analog, digital: whatever it takes to get the 'sound.'"

Of all the keyboards in the studio, thats the first one to get played when someone new comes over. It;s a one man fun band - especially when the Echoplex has its way with it."

"This is what the SP AE does if you have nothing plugged in and tweak it just right. Cakewalk Founder Greg Hendershott Interview on CDM

"I think when I was there [Oberlin College] we got the first [Yamaha] DX7 [synthesizer]. That came into the lab, and everyone was really excited — and totally baffled about how to program it, because we were used to the Moog modular kind of synths where you literally had the patch cords around your necks and were making patches by [connecting] cords. So, to figure out FM synthesis was a little tricky. Working with a big modular synth was tactile and interactive. And then you had this small screen."

360 Systems Spectre Guitar Synth

"360 Systems Spectre Guitar Synthesizer circa 1978. Unit in original tolex case, no manual what you see is what you get. Unit was modified to respond to CV/Gate inputs. I did not preform this mod so I cannot answer any questions other than it does respond to standard 1 V per octave CV and gate from an Arp Sequencer. This is essentailly an Oberheim SEM in a portable tolex case minus one envelope gen, you might be able to mod it and add the second envelope as the boards are original Oberheim SEM 'A'." Magic Music From The Telharmonium Documentary

YouTube via audiolemon. via Nusonica.

"It was 1906. "Get Music on Tap Like Gas or Water" promised the headlines, and soon the public was enchanted with inventor Thaddeus Cahill's (1867-1934) electrical music by wire.

The Telharmonium was a 200-ton behemoth that created numerous musical timbres and could flood many rooms with sound.

Beginning with the first instrument, constructed in the 1890's, and continuing with the installation of the second instrument at Telharmonic Hall in New York, the rise and fall of commercial service, the attempted comeback of the third Telharmonium, and ending with efforts to find a home for the only surviving instrument in 1951, this documentary provides a definitive account of the first comprehensive music synthesizer.

Vet's Daytime Dive 11/11 - Roland MSQ-700 Found Underwater

Yep... this one officially beats dumpster diving for synths.

"In the shallows, we came across a bunch of pipefish. These guys are fun to play with. They seem to like divers so we hung out playing with them for a bit. As we started to make our way in, we ran across what looks to be a baby Fringehead or baby Sculpin. I am not quite sure so if anyone can make a proper ID, I would greatly appreciate it.

Overall, a GREAT dive!!!

Below are some highlights from the dive:" [link]

Oberheim Eclipse (OB8K) mechanical drawings

via this auction.

"This is a super rare stack of blueprint machanical drawing from the never release Oberheim Electronics OB8K. It was also called the Eclipse. This synth was supposed to be release around 1989 and was shown at NAMM, but the company when through a big change at that time and it never happened. It was the early precursor to the OB-MX.(which ended up being nothing like the OB8K.) There are various drawings for the sheet metal components, knobs, benders, top pressure formed plastic, etc"

There are three other tracks as well using various patches I wrote on the Xiosynth. The track was assembling using Sony Sound Forge 8 and Sony Acid Pro 5."

The Harvestman Polivoks Filter Demo

via REwire:

"I picked this up at Analogue Haven Friday while orders were flying off their printers for this. This is one screaming filter and a great addition to my collection of the meanest filters ever along with the Livewire Frequensteiner and Plan-B Model 11. This 1:50 mp3 demo has just two Sawtooth waves going into the filter with plenty of modulation of the VCF. The last patch in the demo is the Bandpass output being used as a CV source to the VCF. Beware, this one's loud and ear shattering."

Yamaha DX21

images via this auction
"First introduced in 1985, the DX-21 is the "little brother" to the famous DX-7 workhorse (which was heard on many of the big hits of the 80's and 90's) and part of the DX family that also included the DX-27 and DX-100. The DX-21 utilizes "FM Synthesis" to create its sounds and this model has four separate "operators" or parameters which can be adjusted to create the final patch.

The DX-21 has a 61 note keyboard, 128 presets, 32 RAM voices and three play modes: Single, Split (keyboard split in 2 parts) and Dual (2 voices mixed). Programming your own sounds is pretty simple once you get the feel for FM-synthesis and the unit also features MIDI (in, out, through), a cassette interface and connections for pedals (portamento, sustain, volume), breath controller and a headphone jack.

An owners manual can be downloaded here.

SCREAM 2007: ANALOGLIVE! - Instrument List

Via Peter Grenader on the Plan B list:
"as of Friday all of the ensemble performers have arrived in the Los Angeles area, with Richard coming in from Atlanta and Thighpaulsandra making the long trek from Wales. We begin work early in the week in a sound stage before commencing formal rehearsals in the theater on Thursday afternoon.

As far as the equipment we'll be using, we've put together an orchestra of oscillators: Off the top of my head - three rather large Plan B systems, a Doepfer/Plan B/Livewire system, Arp 2600, two cabinets of Aries, one nine panel and a medium-sized three panel Serge fitted with a custom Plan B model 13, the largest Wiard system in the world, an EMS Synthi-AKS, the EAR Performance system, a Buchla 200e, Nord Modular, a Novation, a Waldorf Wave, two tcelectronic reverbs (a 2000 and 60000), tons of delays and a Yamaha SPX90. Controller include a C-Thru-Music Axis, a Continuum Fingerboard, a Doepfer PK88 and MAQ 16/3, Roland A-33, a Fatar workstation and an Analogue Systems French Connection.

Along with a wall of effect racks, Chas Smith will be bringing two of his own instruments: the Guitarilla and the Towers. Guitarzilla is a steel guitar made of machined aluminum and welded titanium tubing. It has a 12 string neck tuned to a diatonic scale and an 8-string bass neck. It is also fitted with a small waterless Waterphone-type instrument which is bowed. The Towers are eight 1 1/4" diameter grade 9 titanium rods with titanium plates welded on the ends which are both bowed and struck with a variety of mallets. The longest Tower is 109", standing over 10 feet tall in it's hanger, and the shortest is 55". They have been cut to form a scale which can be obliterated by the complexity of the sounds that the plates generate. They're sonically and visually majestic, bordering on astonishing. Go here for a photo:

http://www.ear-group.net/towers.jpg
(pictured)

We will be performing six pieces, one each from the six players, all of which performed by the ensemble - it's not a series of solo performances. Three of the pieces will be world premiers."
