Today Marks the 10th Anniversary of the Sequential Oberheim OB-6

Andrew McGowan, pictured here with Tom Oberheim, wrote in to let us know today is the 10th Anniversary of the Sequential OB-6. Andrew was a product designer at DSI/Sequential and worked with Tom Oberheim on the OB-6.

You can find a write-up on some the development of the OB-6 as well as the Prophet-6 on his website, https://www.smartbombdesign.com.

A couple of excerpts:

"I was sitting in my office at Seer Systems one day in 1997 or thereabouts when the phone on my desk rang. It was Dave Smith calling from his home. 'I’ve been talking to Tom Oberheim. He’s between jobs and wants to learn about software synths, so I asked him if he wanted to write the Reality operation manual. Can you get him set up and manage that?' I knew who Tom was, of course, but I had never met him, and now Dave was asking me to be his manager. I had no reason to believe that Tom was anything other than the warm, bright, and kind person that I now know he is, but the idea that I would be managing him made me deeply uncomfortable.

Seer Systems was in the process of developing Reality, which is generally considered to be the first 'professional' software synthesizer, though I’m not certain what makes one synthesizer professional and another not."

[Side note: Propellerheads Rebirth was also released in 1997, however the demo version was released in October 1996. A bit like The Damned vs. Sex Pistols for those in the know!]

And [thought this was funny]:

"Those Fucking Lines

Tom and I had talked about synths over the years and, on several occasions, he remarked how often people asked him to remake the OB-X, perhaps because not many were made. Or maybe Rush/Tom Sawyer? I don’t know. What little I did know about the OB-X was that it had a (low-pass only) SEM filter, and we had already made a synth with an SEM filter in it. And our hardware engineer Tony Karavidas had worked at Oberheim and owned multiple Oberheim synths. I also felt very strongly that if we were going to make two poly synths that were essentially the same except for the filter, the 2-pole, SEM state-variable filter would be complementary to the Prophet-6’s 4-pole, OTA low-pass filter.

Tom’s wish list was short. He didn’t want the Prophet-6’s analog distortion. And he wanted the OB-Xa’s blue lines."

Read the rest here

[P.S. I still own an OB-6 desktop and it's one of my most cherished synths. There is something organic about it. The demos I've heard of Sequential's new FOURM have that about them. I have enough synths as it is but the FOURM is very, very tempting for this particular reason.]

The Stylosette Keys by Dubreq

video upload by Musical Miscellany & More

"Dubreq released the Stylosette last year but I'm just now getting around to buying one. I'm not sure why it took me so long but here's a quick overview of the Sytlosette Keys and what it can do.

Intro - 0:00
Unboxing & Overview - 0:50
Basic Functions - 2:31
Delay Circuit - 4:21
Patch Points - 5:24
Final Thoughts - 9:10"

The Stylosette is the latest addition to our Pocket-sized Analog synthesizer range. It’s a monophonic mini analog synth that looks like a cassette and comes in a cool retro cassette storage case for batteries, clips, a screwdriver and cables, which are all included. It also has a built-in speaker, aux out, and an expansion port.

Use the crocodile clips provided to trigger sounds using conductive objects such as fruits, vegetables, or spoons! The Stylosette has a 13-key touch-sensitive keyboard and is played by sliding your finger along the touch-sensitive metal surface, so no need for a Stylus.

Each segment on the synthesizer keyboard plays a different note, so you can create rich, dynamic music with delay effects, vibrato, and a three-octave range.

Change the speed, depth, and delay with the screwdriver accessory to customize your sound. Even connect to another Stylosette. Buzz, twist, and warp every note in the palm of your hand – anywhere.

It’s an excellent gift for both musicians and beginners alike. All you need to do is insert batteries, turn it on, touch the keypad, and make some noise!

Check with dealers on the right for availability.

ROLAND P-6 vs. THE LIMITS ❄️ UK Garage Train Jam | Jamuary 2026

video upload by jAUF BezDebat

"Pushing the Roland Aira Compact P-6 to the absolute edge while rolling through a snowy winter landscape. No more excuses about 'limited gear'—we’re mashing up the constraints and turning them into features. Seen?

[The Session] This is a high-speed UK Garage & Bassline session recorded live on a train. The P-6 might be small, but we’re squeezing every bit of juice out of its sample memory using custom hacks and workflow tricks.

Pay attention to the Ragga MC commentary—I’m shouting out technical specs, signal flow, and P-6 shortcuts instead of the usual hype. Watch the snowy window for lyrics and keep an eye on the screen for text-based tips on how to master the P-6 live.

[Workflow Secrets]

The 'Kit' Strategy: Prepare your samples as a kit so you can slice them and have more control. This way, you can access any part of the riddim and even combine multiple kits inna one beat.

Bank Management: Set strict rules for which sample types go into each bank. This allows you to mute banks live and keep the session flowin' smooth.

Old School Logic: Actually, it’s nuh ridiculous, seen? Short sample time was a typical limitation inna UK Garage origins because of the gear capabilities back inna di day. We’re just bringing that energy to the P-6.

[Gear & Community] Special thanks to the brands and family keeping the inspiration high:

Hardware: Roland Aira Compact P-6

[Join the Family] If you’re a P-6 head or just love gear-torture sessions, hit that Like and Subscribe. Tell me in the comments: What’s the one P-6 limitation that drives you crazy? Let’s find a hack for it!

Upfull vibes and happy Jamuary! 🎹❄️"

Small Town Boy/Bronski Beat (Circuit Tracks version)

video upload by Guinan

"Feeling a bit of 80’s nostalgia ('Stranger Things' anyone?) I thought the time had finally come to try and give this classic electro-pop anthem the Circuit Tracks treatment. Released in 1984 (40+ years!) it’s too easy to forget how ground-breaking the song (and it’s subject) was in the political climate of the Eighties.

The song itself is a simple but almost perfect pop song. It was programmed on an MC-202 Microcomposer and is reputed to have started life as an electronic disco version of the Sex Pistol’s 'Pretty Vacant'!

Yamaha DX7 is used heavily on the track (notably the presets ‘Harp1’ and ‘Bass1’), and additional Sequential Pro-One, Memorymoog and Linn drums. I managed to simplify the arrangement to program everything and the vocals into a single Novation Circuit Tracks. Everything you hear is being played and recorded live from the Tracks.

I'm pleased at how close to the spirit of the original I managed to get this time. I hope you enjoy the track and it brings back some memories for you too."

"More details for synth nerds
BPM 135
I don’t own a DX7 (sadly!) but the closest thing I have is emulation. The repeated ‘Harp1’ DX7 line (and the ‘Marimba’ break) was sequenced on the Tracks MIDI 1 and sampled as 4-bar loops from the internal MicroDEXED emulator in an M-Vave SMK-37 Pro keyboard. Each sample was then triggered (like a drum sound) at the required point in the song using the Drum 3 track.

Jamuary 11-01-26 - 2x CPM DS-2/DF-8/SQ-1 Minimal Techno

video upload by ChrisLody

"Hello, remember me? I'm still here πŸ˜„

I found time for a quick Jamuary jam today with two Stylophone CPM DS-2s and DF-8s. I make a bit of content for them so I've had these a while and I've been meaning to upload something using them. They're producing all the sound here including the percussion and the effects. The two Korg SQ-1 are both running in 2x 8 step mode for 4 full channels of sequencing. It's a bit restrictive with the SQ-1 but still fun!

I have an mmMidi module in my eurorack that has two CV and Gate outputs and is also expandable with an extra module to add drum style gates on a third midi channel. that would be an excellent way to sequence this with something like a Lofi-12 XT, but I don't have the expander yet, it's on the list πŸ˜…"

Rise Me πŸŒ… (Arturia Minifreak // Roland J6 Chord Synth + H90 with new granular effect // TR6S)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"Happy New Year my friends! πŸŽΉπŸ”Š
May 2026 bring you endless jams, wild synth waves, and machines that push the limits of what's possible. Thanks for jamming with me—here's to more electronic adventures ahead!

For this first jam of 2026, after having used the Arturia Minifreak as only instrument in my 2 last videos, I wanted to try it with a couple of other instruments. In this jam, only the DRUMS (TR-6S) have been sequenced, I'm playing the BASS (Minifreak) and CHORDS (J-6) in real-time πŸ˜‰

The jam starts with me triggering some CHORDS on the J-6 and adding the cool new granular effect (Grainmod) from the Eventide H90 pedal.
I then fade in the DRUMS and finally play the BASS in real-time.
I'm using the AUTO FILL feature of the TR-6S so that there's a break at the end of each 8-measure.

** Hardware used **

// πŸ₯ DRUMS:
Roland TR-6S (Digital Rhythm Performer)

// 🎸 BASS:
Arturia Minifreak (polyphonic hybrid keyboard with dual digital sound engines and analog filters)

// 🎹 PADS:
Roland J-6 (Chord sequencer with the tones of the renowned JUNO-60 synth)"

KIVIAK WoFi - "Fierceful Sequential Machines"

video upload by Alba Ecstasy

"Hi! The team from KIVIAK Instruments sent me the WoFi right before the Christmas.
And since then, there hasn't been a day that I haven't played the WoFi!

I’m not mastering it at it’s very best, yet! - but this sampler has a HUGE POTENTIAL!

From the very first day I sampled my voice, my kids' singing, my synths, ambiental noises and anything you can think of!

Diving into the samples with the Waveform Viewer, using the Touch Stripe or the Texturer’s buttons, to create new interesting sounds and modulate them with the LFO, to obtain either an industrial, harsh sounds or a sound with vintage lo-fi vibe.

Here’s a sample from my Sequential PRO 3, using it to create a Berlin School sequence on my own style with a vintage vibe, and playing over it - by using the SOLO function - a plucky/organ lead, both the sequence and the lead using the same sample.

I’m passing through the sampling MACHINES and the Playback Modes and tweaking some functions.

I added some delay and reverb, and during the playing (made in post processing) I’m bypassing them for a raw sound."

More to come, next days!

Questions?! Please ask!

"So I don't know much about this thing. I haven't even tried to power it up. Would probably be fun in noise sets or for learning electronics.

I have no reason to think it doesn't work but I have not had time to order an adapter to power it on. I was thinking to retrofit a more normal IEC plug on the back. Since it's 100v it will need a step down transformer (probably about $80 on amazon).

As far as shipping, the quote you're seeing is for me taking the panels off the rails and packing them more easily into a smaller box, but then mailing the rails to you. It might be possible for a similar price to keep it all together. I'm friendly, we'll work something out if this is destined to be yours."

This appears to be the first post to feature Iwatsu.

Dungeon Synth on Digitone II - Oggol's Sigth

video upload by Silent Tower

"I'm continuing my experiments with sound. And every time I find inspiration in plastiboo books. Such potential is hidden in them. Recently, I also got 'GodHusk' in addition to 'Vermis I' and 'Vermis II'. Although it's not as popular, it's also a masterpiece, and I'm sure I'll use it in the future to find inspiration.

Rest in Peace ~ Chris Rea 🌠

video upload by RetroSound

"(c)2007-25 by RetroSound
supported by UVI: http://bit.ly/retrosound-uvi

One of my favorite tracks from the late 70s.
Fool (If You Think It`s Over) by Chris Rea from the album Whatever Happened to Benny Santini? (1978)

I’m saddened...😞
His music has been the soundtrack of my life. I loved his melodies, I loved his lyrics, and I loved his voice. Driving Home for Christmas, On the Beach, and Josephine are timeless classics that I always turn up loud whenever I hear them on the radio.

I was fortunate enough to get an Amiga license record in 1988 after queuing for hours at the music shop. Holding one of the few records in my hands brought me so much joy, especially since Western music was only available under the counter in the GDR.
Rest in Peace, Chris. Your music will live on forever. Thank you.🌠

FIRST TOUCHES OF Sonicware ELZ_1 PLAY Synth/ INCREDIBLE SOUNDS AND FEATURES

video upload by Maria Calfa-DePaul

"This was recorded right after I unboxed this amazing instrument that just got a huge update to include original waverables by Waldorf
I am very impressed with this synth. I have many Livens by Sonicware and love them but this is in a whole other category
I know I’m going to enjoy this synth and it will take me a long time to do all that it’s capable of."

Prophet 2002, Emulator II, Ursa Major Stargate 323 - Ambiant

video upload by Valmont

"Modified E-mu Emulator II (diy DAC tweak) stacked with a Sequential Circuits Prophet 2002 (the best sounding sampler in this game imo)

I reinjected a bit of the Ursa Major into itself at the console to create a more 'harmonic' effect - i.e. controlled feedback :)

Really happy to have grabbed a Prophet 2000 again… via YouTube!! I actually traded for it thanks to a Swiss friend from around here (if you’re reading this Fernandez, thanks again lmao)
As for the Emulator, I went to Belgium to pick it up with my father. The seller was an og Front 242 fan, which is why he bought it in the first place. I’m so happy it ended up with me given that background. This instrument means a lot to me ; if not the whole reason I started getting into synths in the first place when I was a teenager (you may look for one of my very old Youtube video ha)
You’ll see it at my next concerts believe me, I'm gonna put Emulators where they belong : not in retired billionaire's museums, but on fking stages!!

Moog Matriarch 50 Dark Noisy Modular Patches. Sound Demo Jam

video upload by Anton Anru

"Dark Side Of The M" is a collection of 50 patches for the semi-modular synthesizer Moog Matriarch. It includes: 12 Arps, 10 Leads, 11 Basses, 8 Drones, 9 Chords.
🌌 In this soundset, I aimed to create dark timbres on the edge between experimental and usable. The Matriarch offers excellent possibilities for this: gritty delay tones, the ability to modulate parameters with audio‑rate sources, filter and amplifier overdrive and distortion, FM and AM, and of course, flexible, complex patching.
This also allowed me to explore new preset categories I hadn’t used before—dark, deep Drones and Chords, where a single held key produces intervals.

πŸ“¦ Get these patches: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/p/matr...

🧿 The bank covers a wide range of tones: warm, deep, bright, metallic, expressive, dark, evolving, detuned, inharmonic, noisy, distorted, and others.
The presets vary in complexity: some are simpler and will work in any track or genre, while others are experimental and will make your tracks sound unique.

πŸ’Ž The soundset is suitable for all genres of electronic music, including Techno, House, Trance, Lounge, Downtempo, Funk, Disco, Pop, Acid, Hardcore, IDM, Drum'n'Bass, Breaks, Breakbeat, Trap, Electro, Ambient, Dubstep, EDM, Synth-Pop and others.

πŸ“” The soundset is presented in PDF format. Each page contains notes explaining how the patch works, which parameters are worth tweaking during playback, and how to develop the timbre during a performance. By following these notes and making conscious adjustments, you can explore the depth of the synth.

πŸ’½ Each patch includes an audio example, demonstrating how it's supposed to sound. These examples use only the Matriarch Delay without external effects.

πŸͺ© To recreate these presets, you'll need up to 16 patch cords, including long ones.
Make sure your firmware is v1.2.3 or higher for full compatibility with my presets."

Tomorrow's Sunset | IDM track with Cirklon, Prophet 10, System-8, Minimoog, Machinedrum, and JD-990

video upload by MIDERA

"Two years ago today, I lost my mom... Often I write tracks as tributes, remembering the end - which was really a horrible experience.

But I know what matters isn't what happened at the end, but really I should take the time to celebrate what she gave me: my life, my family, my experiences, my abilities. Her and my dad are the reason I have any of this and can write anything at all. So, I'll just say that I'm thankful to both of them. That's what this day can become, a reminder of what I've been given.

Track:
Sequentix Cirklon 2 sequenced everything.
Sequential Prophet 10 for initial sound
Moog Minimoog for bass
Roland System-8 for pads
Roland JD-990 for plucked sounds
Elektron Machinedrum for drums

#prophet10 #minimoog #machinedrum"

PATCH / STEREO 4 VOICE GENERATIVE CHORDS / Joranalogue Audio Design system

video upload by Joranalogue Audio Design

"'I had a blast creating this patch on a giant Joranalogue eurorack system. I implemented a lot of small tricks, let me write out the main ones down here...'—Simon

Kickdrum
---------------
Filter 8 is getting pinged by a clock pulse (generated with a looping Contour 1), routed through Warp 1. A second Contour 1 is used to modulate the frequency of Filter 8. A Step 8 being clocked with the same pulse from Contour 1 is modulating the exponent parameter on Warp 1 (controlling the amount of distortion/waveshaping). The pattern is 7 steps long. By adjusting the exp knob manually I have additional control over the distortion.

A path in the dark | Sequential Prophet VS and Rhodes Piano ambient soundscape

video upload by MIDERA

"Two years ago I was playing with my kids with a little yamaha piano, the christmas tree lit, we were looking forward to a relaxing and fun holiday... but that's when my mom called me and asked, "Did you mean what you said? Would you really be willing to come down to be with me?" She was so scared. I dropped everything and drove down (about 1.5 hr drive) to be with her. I'll never forget the look on her face - panic, fear, anguish... I don't know how to describe the look, but it was painful to see. I gave her a big hug as she cried. Looking back, I think she knew it was time, I think she knew her body was failing and was failing fast. I was determined to stay positive, but I watched her move. The exhaustion after only a few steps. I'm glad I didn't realize that it would be only 4 more days before I would lose her forever......."

Moog Sound Studio 3 Mother-32 / DFAM / Subharmonicon w/ Original Box & Materials

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this Reverb listing

Mother-32 SN 35763
DFAM SN 26738
Subharmonicon SN 14722
4-Channel Summing Mixer SN 4245

"This bundle of three of Moog's semi-modular synths, DFAM (Drummer From Another Mother), MOTHER32, SUBHARMONICON was specially packaged by the company as a great starter for beginners and professional musicians wanting to get into the modular synth world. This set is beautifully boxed, and shows the love that Moog puts into its products. I have used the synths, but never used or pinned up the posters, sticker or cut outs. They are all untouched. I did play with the patch exploration cards that helped me to learn modular patching to a better extent (Still a full deck).

Moog has discontinued this package, much to the disappointment of many Moog fans. You can still buy the modules separately, but without all the extras that make this set so much fun.

CONTENTS: Moog Sound Studio’s full bundle comes with a three tiered rack with a cable rack that can be attached to store patch cables, custom dust cover, audio mixer, patch book and cables. Other items in the package contain a synth exploration card game and custom artwork by Moog, a Moog screwdriver and Moog pouch for the cables, MIDI patch cable to patch to outboard midi keyboards. I'm adding extra patch cables that weren't in the original purchase" + "'skins' or layovers mimicking the original Moog Matriarch colors which I'm including in the package."
