Buchla 252e + BugBrand

video upload by Precarious333 Music

"Just got my 252e back after repair. Running through some tests to refamiliarize myself with the features. This is just a simple test with 252e sequencing 4 voices. Two are using the VCOs from Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator with one through Vedic Scapes 13700 band pass filter. Then there is a kick from Bugbrand DRM2 and a drone into glitchy high hat using Bugbrand Synth Voice modules. Used lots of off-grid timing on 252e to make it a bit wonky.

The bass is 259e principal oscillator with RED cells coming from the 8 and 16 rings. The band pass voice is 259e modulation oscillator sequenced from the GREEN cells of the 6, 8, and 16 ring so some triplets in there from 6. Kick is BLUE cells from the 16 ring. High hat is ratcheted by the subdivided pulses from rings 8 and 16. Using a mixer to mute/unmute off screen to the left.

Recorded as 2 tracks into Ableton Live. Compression and FXs added in post."

"The 252e represent a new concept in pattern and rhythm generation. 11 concentric rings, each with their own ability to generate complex patterns can be linked between another to create fascinating polyrhythms, including the built-in Euclidian rhythmic library. Three clocks drive the rings, which are freely assignable to 4 pulse and 2 CV outputs, allowing an amazing amount of flexibility to shift, cross-trigger and explore totally new musical possibilities. A rich MIDI implementation compliments the user interface that invites experimentation.

Because of all its functional options this module it offers a myriad of endless possibilities for patching throughout your Buchla system. Don's final module design is. a gas to play with!"

X New Year - the first improv techno album from tamiX
video upload by tamiX (Nan Tang)

"Supporting tamiX, buy this album on Bandcamp: https://detund.bandcamp.com/album/x-n...

X New Year, the first album from tamiX, an artist skilled in improvising electronic music, records the live set at 024 in Beijing, a live house at Sanlitun, on the first day of new year night of 2022.

tamiX being an Buchla endorsed musician, played over 60-minute live set using rare Buchla 200e modular synthesizer system. It is an intensive exploration tamiX made to the music style she’s adept at: melodic techno, and created an unique tune integrating the features of experimental and musical.

To be affected by the distinctive glamour of tamiX, audiences should be in the live show, which is also the reason why tamiX barely released any record. As an electronic musician skilled in improvisation, compared with playing on the traditional music platforms, tamiX chose streaming video on YouTube instead, the leading medium in China and beyond the sea separately where audiences can watch all of her live show videos.

All things considered, the album X New Year includes the whole live show performance; meanwhile, the specific characteristics of tamiX playing electronic music improvisation are well demonstrated to its utmost.

Apart of the digital album, X New Year will be released as a special collector bundle, including a 44 pages photo book of tamiX's performance, and a USB sticker with more contents inside:

a) 60+ mins video of the performance
b) The trailer video
c) mp3 of the album
d) Uncompressed wav of the album
e) All photos in the photo book
f) Two picture of post cards
g) Pictures of the photo book
h) Cover picture of the album
i) Picture of my Buchla modules setup

Stay tuned for more infos about how to get the special collector bundle.

Buchla 252e Polyrythmic Delays

video upload by Kent

"This is a tough one to write up and summarize. It certainly evolved into something rather different than intended.
The primary reason being that the 252e and/or 251e lost their programming twice! Twice for the 252e (the core of the show) and once for the 251e.
I’ve never had the Atmel products lose their minds like this before. I think that they are rather sensitive to low voltage conditions (brown outs) as they power up as this when they lost their minds. The currently loading preset gets scrambled or wiped. As can be see in the short ancillary video below, the 252e became unresponsive.
That’s two trips to the 10-panel case in order to be reflashed with firmware and three runs at programming the damn thing.

I was so exasperated that I nearly pulled everything so that I could start on the other 3 ideas that I wish to explore and execute. I did promise myself that I would endeavor to be less concerned with perfection and be more concerned with simply getting anything of interest out into the world. It doesn’t have to be novel. It doesn’t have to be world-changing. It just needs to get out there if there is even anything 51% interesting in the recording; I do have some standards after all!
I brewed up a double espresso and hit ‘record’.

It started as an E Minor progression with evolution to… Fuck if I know anymore. That stuff got deleted. I eventually threw in some Whole Tone stuff (especially noticeable toward the end) and smashed it all together in gobs of delay via new toys from X1L3: a Shard, an Underwurlde (messed up delay), and a circuit bent and high augmented with Korg MS20-ish circuits (plus a delay) drum machine that used to be a Yamaha DD-7. It is now a rather more interesting and useful X1L3 DDX.

Basically,
the BLUE rings on the 252e went to the upper macro oscillator of the 1979 DAO
The GREEN rings to the lower part of the DAO (ratcheted bell sounds)
Both using their internal VCAs, which I also used to modulate “Color” & “Timbre” at times.
Both voices went into the Analogue Systems RS-290 delay. The Blue voice also went, in parallel, to the Underwurlde which then went to the 290. It’s a cheat for keeping delay nonsense in synch even though the Underwurlde was hand synced to tempo.
RED rings were the 259e into a 292e LPG. Lots going on there and the Pendulum/Ratchet was acting as a burst generator. I was using the 251e for that but didn’t want program that again.

Studio.h

CSR doing its scaling job plus attenuation of audio signals along with manual muting of both audio and gates/triggers. Love it.
254e was being controlled by the Buchla 266e to quasi-randomly filter out some of the drum rolls/fills for the Green ring. It also had a manual Gate voltage connected to it so that I could inject tones into the X1L3 Shard.

Northern Light Modular 2TT
Taking the clock from a channel of the 251e and distributing it, mangling it, and doing its thing. All Eurorack connects to this as well.

X1L3 (pronounced “Exile”) DDX:
It provided percussion in 3/4 via Malekko Varigate 4. I also played it manually at times. It ran into the TipTop Áudio Z-DSP with the Valhalla “Shimmer” card but set to program #8 for pitched echo.

https://x1l3.bigcartel.com

Lots of Eurorack. Some mentioned specifically at the end of the video. I left out a lot as I wanted to get this video posted. Best Supporting Cast:
2x Folktek Matters. All Even Beat Count percussion.
Tyme Sefaris Mk1 & Mk2… Connected to Matters
Audio Damage (I know, right?!) Grainshifter on one of the Matters.
Lots of Eurorack sequencing.
As I look back on what was used, much of the processing was changed due to reprogramming things. All compression pulled and I just mixed it ‘live’ without multi-tracking.

Time to tear this patch down!"

Move Along

Oxix52

"All sounds from are from the Buchla 200e. High stuff is the flat noise from the 266e going through the 296e with certain frequencies triggered by the 281e which is driven by the 252e and 250e. 'Kick' is the right side triangle from the Studio H DPO. "Bass" is the same but the "notes" are subdivisions from the 252e. Body of the "Snare" is the left side triangle from the Studio H DPO with the snares from the noise going through the 296e. "Melodies" are the 261e sequenced by the 251e and the ZOe getting linear FM from the sine of the 261e."

252e

Published on Apr 6, 2018 Oxix52

"The focus is on the 252e. It is controlling a 259e, 266e, 281e, and 292e. All pulse and CV rings are randomly filled. The rings are randomly chosen. At first, the 252e rings are synchronizing on 1. About halfway through, they are switched to synchronize on cycle."

Projection

Published on Feb 24, 2018 Oxix52

"I recently acquired a few vintage vinyl records of Morton Subotnick and was intrigued by the notation on the back of Silver Apples of the Moon. I experimented with 5 of the lines from this notation using the 251e and 250e for the sequences and the 252e for some triggering. I used the principal and modulation oscillators from the 261e and 259 as well as one section of the Dual Algorithmic Oscillator. This doesn’t sound anything like Subotnick’s masterpiece, but it was fun putting it together."
