Frequency Central feat. DARK STAR - Super compact full voice bursting with character and features!

video upload by Frequency Central

"Dark Star consists of 4 sections:

-Voltage Controlled Oscillator based on AS3340 with sawtooth, triangle and pulse waveforms
-Voltage Controlled Filter with lowpass and highpass options, Drive control, Sweep control which attenuates amount of Release CV
-Release generator with CV input for voltage control of release time. Option for sustain via jumper on rear panel.
-Voltage Controlled Amplifier

Together they form a pre-patched super versatile analogue synthesiser voice.

Additionally, each section is fully modular in it’s own right, so there are patch points for:

-1V/oct CV input
-PWM CV input – attenuator doubles as manual pulse width when no external signal is present
-Gate input for Release or Sustain/Release
-Release CV input for voltage control of Release time
-VCF audio input with attenuator, for introducing external audio
-VCF CV input with attenuator (1V/oct CV is normalised to this input)
-VCA audio input (VCF is normalised to this input)
-VCA CV input (Release CV is normalised to this input)
-Release CV output
-VCO audio output
-VCF audio output
-VCA audio output"

"The 101-VCO has been re-tooled in 12HP! Version 2 continues its authentic realization of the Roland SH-101 Oscillator adapted to Eurorack: that lovely Sub-Octave Generator, that snowy Noise Generator, an integrated Mixer section to bring all the waves together.

Now in revision 2: Improved tuning stability using power rail voltage references. Simplified tuning via coarse/fine tune knobs. Individual waveform outputs without need for any expander module.

101-VCO expands the original SH-101 features to reveal more potential of the 3340 chip: Triangle wave and exponential FM. And 2 flavors of Linear FM: Lo Range to find those vibrato sweet spots, and Hi Range for full-on Linear FM madness. Expand the palette of original sounds using an external CV signal for Pulse Width Modulation that is summed against the initial Pulse Width amount. While the initial PW amount can go right up to the edge of vanishing, PWM can take the Width right down to 0% up to 100% for complete cancellation.

Great care was taken to keep the 101-VCO fully analog circuit as close to the original as possible. Featuring an Alfa AS3340 re-issue chip at the core of the design, surrounded by eight 20mm slide pot controls. With the conventional coarse/fine tuning knobs it will provide full audio range, whether using the v/oct input or not.

Every 101-VCO is meticulously hand-crafted in limited quantities, not mass-produced, and ready to rock your modular world. Includes 16-pin-to-10-pin power connector cable.

Coarse Tune Knob | Initial oscillator frequency

Fine Tune Knob | Initial oscillator frequency, +/-6 semitones range

FM Slider | Amount that an external signal will modulate the frequency

FM TYPE Switch | LO for vibrato, HI/EXP for more dramatic frequency modulation

PULSE WIDTH Slider | initial Pulse Width amount

PULSE WIDTH MODULATION Slider | The amount that an external signal will affect pulse width

SOURCE MIXER Sliders | Adjusts the amplitude amount of each waveform going to the MIX output

SUB-OCTAVE Switch | Select between -1 octave Square, -2 octave Squrare, -2 octave Narrow Pulse

V/Oct Jack | Pitch Initial Frequency input for connecting keyboard controllers or sequencers

FM Jack | Plug in external signals to modulate Pitch here, such as LFO or envelopes

PWM Jack | Plug in external signals to modulate the Pulse Width here, again LFOs are typical

Individual Waveform Output Jacks | These jacks always output their buffered, DC-coupled signals regardless of Source Mixer settings

Mix Output Jack | This is the combined waveform output of the Source Mixer

TUNE Trimmer (on the back) | Affects the initial oscillator frequency

SCALE Trimmer (on the back) | Affects the v/oct tracking of the oscillator"

Northern Light Modular Animated Tricillator Model 2AT Modulated Drone Teaser

video upload by Kent

"It’s BIG! (2 panels wide, housing 3 VCOs and 8 LFOs!)

It’s feature rich! (12 VCAs, syncable & offset-capable LFOs of various waveforms, 4 optical clippers: 3 x each osc and one on Mix Out, 3 sub-oscillators, multi-waveform oscillator sync, and so much more.)

It’s the Northern Light Modular Model 2AT Animated Tricillator. https://northernlightmodular.com/prod...
This thing is nuts but also very well thought out. The master stroke is adding their Electric Dompteur H-Series module ( https://northernlightmodular.com/prod... )right on board. With so many modulation destinations, it makes perfect sense to add 8 syncable, freezable, offset-capable, and multi-waveform LFOs to complete the package and animate the entire show. Each LFO output also features its own attenuator, thus providing subtle movement as heard in this video.

I’m planning to do a full walkthrough of the module as soon as time allows."

Check for US availability at Noisebug.

Animated Tricillator – Model 2AT – Sifam

€ 1.800,00

Three syncable VCOs and 8 LFOs in one unit

The oscillators are built on the classic circuit used in the 80s by Roland, Sequential and others.
The new AS3340-HYP VCOs give us that silky smooth 80s feeling back again and take care of the pitch drift the classic CEM shows
It tracks fine over all 8 octaves..
All four waveform levels are CV controllable
There is a rotary switch for selecting the octaves, a 3-stage sub oscillator and a front panel jumper selectable Mod CV (0-10V) out , scalable FM and CV control and of course full PWM control , all attenuverted
The 2AT has the FM inputs normalled to the outputs of the other oscillators and the order can be changed on the back
The sync inputs can be connected with shorting bars to the adjacent mod outputs conveniently
The 3 separate oscillator outputs are mixed internally and are preset at the MIX OUT if no single out is used.
Optical clipping stages are present at OSC and MAIN stage

The left side of the module is a swarm LFO
One master frequency, set by a knob or an external input, is re-used 7 times with variations
The 8 frequencies can be offset in phase or frequency, always based on the master frequency.
It can go down to 0 Hz and freeze the levels at their present state
And every output can be adjusted directly at the output without the need for attenuators

There is also a shared pitch input with a 4 octave offset and level LED on the lower left side.
The upper left corner is the collective clipping and gain control.

FusionLab ION Synthesizer

video upload by Toine Scholtz

"A little video demonstrating the Ion, a digitally controlled analog monosynth that I built a while ago. All the music in the video was created using the synth only (sequenced from and recorded into Ableton Live).

I started sketching the concept for the synth nearly 10 years before I began the build, but had a great deal to learn about analog and digital electronics before I was capable of actually building it. I arrived at the final design around mid-2020, began the build late 2020, and completed it a few months into 2021.

The synth is controlled by MIDI over USB. I used a PJRC Teensy 3.1 microcontroller and several DAC ICs to generate control voltages.

The Ion has 3 VCOs, each producing a slightly different selection of waveforms, and a noise source with its own state variable filter. Each VCO can produce a pulse width waveform, and each has a dedicated LFO to control PWM. There are two main resonant VC filters, each with continuously variable responses between LPF, HPF, BPF and notch. The filter configuration can be continuously faded between series and parallel.

The synth has a main VCA with dedicated envelope generator, and each VCF has a dedicated EG controlling cutoff frequency. A dedicated LFO can control the frequency of one or all three VCOs. Three other modulation sources, an EG and two LFOs, can be routed through the modulation matrix, a two channel matrix with 7 sources and 8 destinations available on each channel. Each VCO output can be also used as a mod source, as can the noise source. The matrix destinations include VCO pitch, VCF cutoffs, and AM of one of the VCOs and the main VCA.

The synth uses a Doepfer DIY synth board, which provides one of the VCOs, one of the VCFs and its envelope generator, the main VCA, the pitch modulation LFO, and the slew limiter used for the glide control. All the remaining modules are either completely discrete or make use of dedicated synth chips.

The design of VCO1 is adapted from Thomas Henry's astoundingly good VCO-1. The second VCF derives from Thomas Henry's beautiful VCF-1 design. VCO2 uses the AS3340 clone of the classic CEM chip. One of the mod source LFOs is based on a very elegant Ray Wilson design, and the other mod source LFO and envelope generator (as well as the main EG and the EG modulating the other VCF) are build using the fantastic modulation chips designed and supplied by Electric Druid. The noise source is also based on the Electric Druid noise generator IC.

In practice, the synth architecture is predominantly subtractive, but the mod matrix means it's also possible to do basic FM, although that's fairly limited by there being only two mod matrix channels (mod matrices are difficult and expensive to implement).

The synth cost about 5 months of spare time, more money than I have the courage to calculate, and some intense stress and frustration in getting it to work properly. Debugging hardware is much more difficult than debugging software.

It was an amazing journey of learning, and I'm one step closer to knowing how not to build a synth. It also gave me an even more acute and humbling appreciation of just how astounding is the work done by the synth electronics pioneers, and indeed contemporary designers. I stand, diminutive, on the shoulders of many giants.

Orchestrion-a DIY analog String/Choir machine

video upload by Andreas Remshagen

"Complete Description and Circuits:

www.remshagen.eu

A Strings/Choir synthesizer based on 12 oscillators with the AS3340 chip. I have chosen this VCO to get a very stable tuning over the octaves.

Each oscillator can be tuned individually. 3 oscillators are grouped together. There are 4 groups and each group has its own CV-1V/Oct input.

With an appropriate controller, the device can be played polyphonically in 4 voices.

There is a CV input for all VCOs at the same time

There is an adjustable ensemble effect that is always split between the 3 VCOs in a group

The entire device contains individual modules.

Strings and Choir can be mixed with a 5K Lin - Poti.

A separate saw-output can be connected to an external Filter or Resonator. It can be connected back

to the VCA-input

Delay is an option i didn't built in at this time"

WFM oscillator -LA67 & Rebach VCO-A,VCF-A,ADSR-A

Dziam Bass

"Hello all.
today I patched WFM oscillator from LA67 and Rebach VCO-A, VCF-A ADSR. I added a traingle wave to FM IN in WFM and pulse waves from WFM to PWM IN in VCO rebach.
as you can see nice nice analog sound when i open more and close the filter.
This is a nice combination for me because the WFM is based on the old 1970 KOBOL oscillator and the rebate VCO based on the AS3340 so it gives a great character,
I tried to subtly add FM and open the filter for a musically working sound."

New Syntaxis Micromodular Starter Set

Krzychu1995

"!!! Available immediatelly at http://syntaxis.com.pl !!!
Today I have something very special to show. In this video you can see and hear synth made from Syntaxis Micromodular set. Instrument is assembled from basic set of micromodules (uVCO, uVCF, uVCA, uLFO and uADSR), but it sounds quite versatile. User is able to assemble synthesizer on it's own, in modular way, but much cheaper and without necessity of use dedicated multipliers - breadboard does it already! Usually building subassemblies of synths on breadboard makes circuit unreliable in longer term. But with Micromodules it works like it was soldered together - you can assemble you own synth, get plywood, drill holes for potentiometers, screw them in place and carry your own synth around for gigs."

DIY analogue synthesizer jam

Published on Oct 14, 2019 SpamSundays

"Here's a project that I've been working on for a long time now. It has two AS3340 based VCOs, outputting either ramp or square wavefroms that can be mixed together the latter of which having a pulse width control knob, which can be modulated as well.

Other circuits include a simple VCA and an envelope with attack and decay controls, a resonant VCF and an LFO with sine, triangle and square waves. I also included a real tube distortion running at 120 volts B+ (non of that starved plate BS) to add some more harmonics to the sound. As a final touch I added a third 555 oscillator which can hard sync both VCOs for some more fun.

PWM, filter cutoff and the hard sync oscillator all can be modulated to make some absolutely crazy sounds.

Here's a patch I threw together with the Korg SQ-1 and some reverb coming from the Zoom MS70-CDR.

Enjoy!"

New Fusion VCO2 from Erica Synths

Published on May 3, 2019 Erica Synths

"Fusion VCO2 is a full analogue sound source with lots of distinct features.

The core of the module is highly stable AS3340-based VCO with three simultaneously available waveforms, transistor-based suboscillator and detune function – two BBD delay lines that make frequency shifter that is mixed back to the principal oscillator in order to emulate two detuned VCOs. Tube crunch – distinct tube overdrive - is added on the top of the mix. Furthermore, Audio input mixes an external audio signal with the principal oscillator which results in crazy sonic experience. Fusion VCO2 is exactly what you need, if you wish to get really low frequencies and have a sound that sets your modular system apart from mass!

Features:
Full analogue design
Great tracking over 8 octave range
Detune function for thickening the sound
-1 oct transistor based suboscillator
Tube overdrive circuit
External audio input
VCO synchronization
Simultaneous waveform outputs"

RH Electronics 5 Voice analog synthesizer - Major update

Published on Aug 18, 2018 RH Electronics

"It works! Well one voice does on breadboard.
Up and running are 2 oscillators (CEM3340 based, but using AS3340)
These go to a 4066 switch then the waveforms are mixed, so you can switch on all of them on both oscillators.

The oscillator is based on the Prophet 5 circuit, the voice chip is a CEM3372, which was £35 but worth it, as it has everything, 2 inputs voltage controlled mixer, a low pass filter with cutoff/resonance and a VCA

Then an envelope generator to control the filter and amp (test just the amp)

So one full voice will need
2x oscillators
1x Signal processor
2x Envelope generators
1x CV mixer for the envelope and cutoff (filter only) and LFO CV

Microcontroller will feed SPI DACs that will be the voice and control CVs, but then all the voice circuits are analog."

New CEM and SSM Chip Clones

A few new CEM and SSM chips for the DIYers out there.

First we have Latvian CEM Synth IC clones from ALFA:

AS3310 Voltage Controlled Envelope Generator. CEM3310 pin-to-pin compatible
AS3320 Voltage controlled filter. Improved CEM3320 pin-to-pin compatible
AS3330 Dual Voltage Controled Amplifier (VCA). Improved CEM3330 replacement.
AS3340, AS3345 Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO). CEM3340, CEM3345 pin-to-pin compatible
AS3360 Dual Voltage Controled Amplifier (VCA). CEM3360 pin-to-pin compatible
AS16M1 Serial Controlled, 16-Channel SPCO Switch

Next, Coolaudio [Behringer] announced they are working on new SSM chip clones (news via Soviet Space Child):

"Now that we have successfully cloned the famous Curtis 3340 and 3320 synth chips, we are now looking into reviving the great sounding SSM2044 and SSM2033 chips."

Sound Semiconductor recently announced the SSI2164 QUAD VCA.

And last, but definitely not least, considering, Curtis Electro Music announced the CEM3340 VCO re-issue in 2016.

For a list of CEM and SSM chips in synthesizers see Wikipedia here.

For previous posts including some with demos, see the corresponding labels below.

This post, like all posts, is an FYI that this all exists. It's up to makers and DIYers to decide where they get their chips. This post is worth reading.
