Autonomous Bassline Generator (by 4ms) synced with Korg Volca via Infrared Emitter

Published on Feb 8, 2019 O.S.cillator @ Kalkartronic

"The Autonomous Bassline Generator (ABG) by 4ms can receive IR signals from other ABGs and so I thought maybe it is possible to convert other external sync signals into Infrared signals. In order to check it out I bought an IR Emitter with 3.5mm jack for a just a few euros and plugged it into the sync out of the Volca FM, and voilĂ : It works perfectly!
So, another fun way to noodle around with the mini synth."

Chili - Sweet & Savory

Chili - Sweet & Savory from Chili on Vimeo.

"Wassup everybody, some recent developments so here ya go:

Introducing the Fresh-a-Sketch! a monome 40h kit built into an old Etch-a-Sketch complete with working pots knobs and two infrared controllers... Think DIY D-beams!

I'm using monome_midi_64 from monome base to route monome presses to Ableton Live. The adc function of this patch makes it handy for mapping the pots and beams...

Ableton is basically acting as a sampler in clip view with some midi mappings and macros for the fx chains...

all clips are mapped to buttons, the bottom two rows are dedicated to the Finger, knobs and beams are assigned to parameters of that plugin...

Track is Sweet & Savory part of a new project. On this track the guitar licks are brought to you by Abramius Bromide. Bells, drums and other random noise, yours truly.

Enjoy!"
Note the mini pul(sew)idth minimoog.

Update via Chili in the comments: "Also featured is an ABG a.k.a. Autonomous Bassline Generator designed in Austin by 4ms. Super great noisemakers and synth hardware!"

Noise Makers on addicted to noise

via addicted to noise, a new site on various noise makers (more below).

Pictured:
"Left-to-right, top-to-bottom:
Jomox M-Resonator, Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail, DOD FX32 Meat Box, Bleep Labs Nebulophone
Behringer Xenyx 802, 4MS Autonomous Bassline Generator, Ciat-Lonbarde Tetrazzi Organus

The signal path is:
Tetrazzi Organ (stereo) > M-Resonator (stereo) > channel on mixer
ABG / Nebulophone > channel on mixer
FX send on mixer: Holy Grail > Meat Box > channel on mixer
mixer > amplification+sound!"

via Josh of addicted to noise:
"I've started up a site that's dedicated to doing reviews, samples, holding discussions and soon to feature video reviews of music hardware for experimental artists. Will be covering a lot of different devices very soon--for now the only review I have finished is for the DOD FX32 Meat Box, but I have plans to cover some of the Andromeda Space Rockers kits, the Ciat-Lonbarde Tetrazzi Organus, Jomox M-Resonator, etc, all in a fashion that will favor people of an experimental nature. I feel like this is a presence that is lacking amongst all the guitar effects demos on YouTube and on other sites; not enough thinking that strays from the path."

4ms ABG and the Ekdahl Moisturizer

YouTube via bigcitymusic — April 22, 2010 —

"Here we have the 4ms Autonomous Bassline Generator running through the Ekdahl Moisturizer. The ABG is a kit that can be easily built and is a whole lot of fun. It can continually produce varying melodies seemingly by magic!

The Moisturizer is a super-cool spring reverb unit with an analog multimode filter and LFO for modulation. One of the best things about the Moisturizer is that there are controls for wet/dry amounts for both the filter and reverb sections. The built in LFO can modulate the filter cutoff frequency and the filter mode which can yield some great results. There's also a host of jacks on the back of the Moisturizer, giving voltage control over filter cutoff, filter mode, wet/dry amounts for reverb and filter as well as LFO speed and an LFO output. Gated, filtered, modulated, funkdafied spring reverb! The Moisturizer sounds great on guitar too and anything else you can think of;)"

Algorithm plus Algorithm

YouTube via EA78751
"Two algorithmic synthesizers performing musical duty at high speed. On the right is the 4ms Pedals Autonomous Bassline Generator. On the left is something new.

They're synchronized with IR Sync. IR sync is just a 940nm LED flashing 16th notes, and a phototransistor/opamp receiver. Feel free to use it, the schematic is here:

MK-4 bass drum

YouTube via EA78751

"ANDROMEDA MK-4 analog bass drum out now. Assembly required. This video shows how to utilize the Mk-4 bass frequencies for good and evil. Featuring a choice riff from the 4ms pedals AUTONOMOUS BASSLINE GENERATOR. Snare is Andromeda Mk-2 with 47K mod. If you have an Mk-2 and want to know how to do the 47K mod, hit me up its easy. The thing on the far left is in development. Activated by infrared synchronizers."

Handmade Music Austin #2

YouTube via EA78751. part 1 here
"Video from the second Handmade Music Austin workshop, Nov 15 2009.

projects -
Basic kit: Mini Space Rockers (ericarcher.net)
Advanced kit: Autonomous Bassline Generator (4ms pedals)

The workshop was full. About 30 people built the basic kit, and about 20 built the advanced kit. Treasure City Thrift had a table of choice retro electronics for sale. After all the kits were built, we plugged in to the PA and partied until the amp overheated."

Autonomous Bassline Generator - out of the box

YouTube via 4mspedals

"Built your ABG kit? This is what it should do when you turn it on...

For more info on the ABG, go to http://www.4mspedals.com"

Autonomous Bassline Generator - basic demo

"Basic demo of the features of the Autonomous Bassline Generator, a low-cost, hackable, deterministic sequencer + digital VCO + photo-sensitive analogue filter + PWM controlled LED. It also features IR connectivity, as seen in the last part of the video where two ABG's are beat sync'ed!

Available as a kit from http://www.4mspedals.com
and will be built at Handmade Music Austin's Nov 2009 workshop"

Autonomous Bassline Generator - IR sync demo

"HAIRNET stands for Hairnet Audio InfraRed NETwork, and is the platform of choice for Andromeda Space Rocker devices. With this simple protocol, a branching chain of drum/bass/lead modules can be sync'ed up (or run at their own tempos, of course).

Shown here are two ABG's in sync. The business card is used to break the IR beam

Handmade Music Austin #1

YouTube via EA78751 "Some video from Handmade Music Austin #1, Oct 18 2009. Twenty people learned about soldering and built Mini Space Rockers and Andromeda MK-1 analog drum machines. Everybody got a different Mini Space Rockers sound effect (like Skrew Bass, El Grito, Mouse, and Space Hawk!) Thats what you're hearing here... I didnt get a good recording of the Andromeda MK-1 jam though. Next month, November, we'll build the Autonomous Bassline Generator from 4ms Pedals. After that, the Nebulophone from Bleep Labs." also see Mini Space Rockers Update:

Handmade Music Austin

via Bleep Labs:

"4ms Pedals, Eric archer, and Dr. Bleep are proud to announce Handmade Music Austin! Starting October 13th at Salvage Vanguard Theater in collaboration with CotFG, we will be offering monthly workshops in they style of Handmade Music.

We’ll have free soldering, bending and diy synth classes, as well as workshops to build our forthcoming Andromeda Space Rocker kits. Early sign-ups for classes will start soon so stay tuned!"

The following are a couple of videos of kits in development.
The mixer has the four tiny drum machines previously posted running through it.

Mini 4ch mixer amp

Mini 4ch mixer amp from EA78751 on Vimeo.

"Prototype 4ch powered "pocket mixer" blowin out analog beats thru a bare 12" speaker.

This jam is crying for Gakken SX-150.

Pocket mixer: 2.8W service into 4 ohms w/ soft clip. 4 C-cell batteries. Connects to any external speaker with binding post terminals."

Autonomous Bassline Generator

YouTube via 4mspedals

"The Autonomous Bassline Generator creates deterministic bassline patterns in a sci-fi retro sound by generating melodies on the fly, based on a knob. It's just an AVR (attiny44) chip doing all the work, plus an opamp to act as the filter (photocell). The blue button is Tap Tempo, or if you hold it down for 1 second, it syncs up to the pulses on the IR receiver (this lets you beat-sync multiple Andromeda Space Rocker modules). The red button lets you edit a single note in the melody. Pulse-width modulation is currently pre-set to a certain envelope, but that will become user-controllable soon!

Part of the "Andromeda Space Rockers" series of modules, see www.ericarcher.net for drum modules.

The 6-pin header board dangling to the right is an ISP header. Totally hackable!"
