BOUNCED / Venus Instruments VENO-ECHO / as a looper / also some PHONOGENE / not a tutorial

video upload by BRiES

"I made a send out of my joystick (it has built in vcas) so I could route new sounds through the looper. Additionally I have a manual gate routed through the Herzlich Labs OMEN lpg to create a soft envelope that modulates the filter frequency for my main sound (in a way acting as a vca as well).
The bulk of the looping is done with the VENO-ECHO. Phonogene is used as an 'on the side looper' set at a shorter time. I had monitoring on for both VCOs that I used (which I didn't record) - otherwise it would be impossible to stay somewhat in tune."

NibbleKnotOne / I watched a video on the Lorre-Mill Double Knot and I shouldn't have / NIBBLER

video upload by BRiES

"Have you heard of this device? It combines a double shift register with some west-coast (lpg?) features to create simple but mesmerizing sequences of blips and bloops. I watched an Instagram reel by Sam Prekop that sounded way too nice, so I had a go at creating something similar in eurorack using Schlappi Engineering's NIBBLERS and THREE BODY.

I don't think I got anywhere close to what a Double Knot can do but these kinds of patches either end up being interesting in their own right or are the stepping stone for incremental understanding of a (new) technique."

XAOC Leibniz Binary Subsystem | Episode 01 | Intro & Drezno II

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"My first ignorant impression was 'it's a fancy bitcrusher' which may be 10% right. It's about musical applications with binary logic. Thanks to Bries and Tom Churchil for their masterclasses so I may be able to figure out the other 90%.

As always, I am not sponsored by XAOC. I wish, but it's too late now. I have Lipsk in backorder and that will probably conclude my case.

Dear XAOC if you feel thankful while this series progresses, I still have a short wishlist like Odessa, Batumi, Samara, Belgrad and a mixer. But I am already happy you made these modules!"

Jolin Lab SINGOLI / 7 input DC coupled utility mixer / expander / explanation and demo

video upload by BRiES

"SINGOLI by Jolin is a DC coupled mixer - which means it's suited to mix things like lfos, envelopes, etc. You can just as well use it for mixing down audio and when connected to the performance mixer TUTTO&SEMPRE it can act as a 7 input mono expander for that module.

SINGOLI has one special trick up its sleeve: the T or transient output. This output generates a short gate or trigger whenever the master output (O) on SINGOLI crosses a certain threshold. I've found this threshold to be around 2.5V. This output can for example be used the make a clock or trigger pattern from lfos or audio sources for envelopes, drums, ... or to trigger other events on your system."

Schlappi Engineering NIBBLER / first patch / binary for the people

video upload by BRiES

"Nibbler is used for just about everything in this patch (sequencing melodies, triggering drums and providing stepped modulation). Everything else that needs to be said is right there in the video. I kindly suggest (if you have the time and the energy) you just watch/listen first and then do a rewatch while reading the captions to get to grips with what's happening. This is just a basic patch using only the most basic functionality of both NIBBLERS but nonetheless it can get a 'bit' confusing.

Thanks to the wonderful people at Schlappi Engineering for their trust and support.

PS: Spielberg please make it happen.
PS2: Federico if you're reading this: I'll start working on the SINGOLI video soon
PS3: if you're into LPGs, you should really have a look at what Herzlich Labs is doing."

BRiES Nontemporary Toolkit / LYRATE for Decent Sampler

video upload by BRiES

"To download or find out more about the LYRATE plugin pack, visit the Decent Samples webshop: http://www.decentsamples.com

Inspired by the leftfield Lyra 8 instrument by Soma Labs LYRATE offers an unusual interface that enables harmonic (and dissonant) experimentation with a broad set of soundsources. Just like with the SYNTHS one plugin pack I wanted to provide the means to make complex and cinematic sounds yourself. To make this pack I didn’t sample a real Lyra 8, instead I recorded several other (hardware) synths including modular VCOs and a vintage Korg MS20. The core feature of Lyra 8 (i.e. being able to tune and tweak the individual voices) is what excited me to create these virtual instruments."

Jolin TUTTO & SEMPRE / versatile 4 channel stereo mixer with patchbay / explanation and demo

video upload by BRiES

"In this video I take a look at the extensive and unique features on TUTTO & SEMPRE, an interesting stereo mixer by Jolin. It's really useful to have a patchbay (extra intputs and outputs where you can 'insert' modules) and built-in VCAs are always a big plus on any module, especially on a mixer. 1 Aux input, 2 headphone outputs with seperate cue inputs, ... there's a lot going on in this mixer.

via Jolin

"TUTTO&SEMPRE is a stereo performance mixer with 4 channel strips, an active patchbay, individual VCAs, clickless mutes, individual post attenuation direct outs, a main balanced stereo output and two high fidelity headphones drivers with switchable stereo inserts.

The module consists of two main blocks:

Mixing frame

I - 4 pairs of actively normalled inputs with input LED meters.

↑ - Patchbay out – a cable here interrupts the signal flow.

↓ - Patchbay insert to get back to the mix.

V - Control voltage input for the VCAs.

Audio graded logarithmic stereo potentiometers.

Paired clickless mute toggle.

O - Individual output post attenuators.

Output stage

The main level knob regulates the volume of the three outputs: L and R are balanced line level signals while S is a combined stereo output designed to be fed into external 3.5mm interfaces.

A stand for auxiliary inputs: signals fed here will bypass the first mixing block.

The main mix continues to flow to the two headphones amplifiers. Each one of them can easily power up to 600 ohms drivers with low noise and high-fidelity performance. A stereo aux input can be fed into each one of the phones sections with a switch that allows isolated preview listening and routing to the main mix – this makes the module able to manage up to 7 stereo signals at the same time."

Jolin KNOBI / macro controller / mix attenuate invert amplify voltages / extensive playthrough

video upload by BRiES

"KNOBI by Jolin is a unique take on a utilitarian staple of eurorack systems: attenuverting and mixing. At first glance KNOBI is not so complex, but try using it without reading the manual and you might be somewhat confused. Once you understand the signal flow it all makes a lot of sense though... and I'm here to help.

In this video I shed some light on the leftfield macro controller that is KNOBI and I share a few in-depth patch ideas to hopefully spark your creative plug. Since there's always a fitting place for attenuation in almost all situations figuring out how to implement KNOBI in patches comes down to your imagination. I demonstrate how I use it to open and close a filter, how I use it as a macro controller for a complete patch and how to use the seemingly random 'x2-5V' setting to create a side-chain compressor patch without the hassle of manual offsets."

0:00 intro

22:20 patch idea 1 pushbutton
28:05 patch idea 2 control a patch
45:43 patch idea 3 side-chain compressor

via Jolin

"KNOBI is a multi-tool able to mix, attenuate, invert, display and multiply any kind of signal.

Knobi can serve a wide range of purposes thanks to its internal signal path that makes use of some of the most useful building blocks of analog synthesis: a 4-channel mixer, a three-range offset, an attenuverter, a fixed manual gate and lastly a cascading multiple derived from the output stage of AgogĂ´.

a, b, c and d are Knobi’s inputs while r is a fixed 5v reference output. The toggle switch next to d sets the range of the attenuator/offset. Connect a signal into one of the inputs to visualize its voltage value in the three digits meter. Keep in mind that this reading happens post attenuator/offset and attenuverter – the smaller knob with (-) and (+) indications.

The pushbutton next to x4 adds a gate of 5v to the mix: with no input connected it will act as a manual gate output. Autopatch the r reference output into one of the inputs to use Knobi as a macro controller thanks the attenuator/offset knob and switch to set the range and the attenuverter.

x1, x2, x3 and x4 are all cascading copies of the final signal path. Plugging a cable will break the normalization and the multiplication will reset starting from the next output. Four cables plugged in will output a copy at the same factor x1 - unity gain – making Knobi a versatile buffered multiple."

Features

Thermally compensated 5v voltage source with dedicated output.

Four channel mixer with four buffered output.

Built in 3 digits voltage meter post mix / attenuation / inversion.

Attenuator/offset with a dedicated three positions range toggle.

Manual gate button tied to the mix.

4 cascading outputs in an open design configuration.

Unique signal path: mix – attenuate – invert – add – visualize – multiplicate.

“Whatever” power connector a.k.a. don’t mind the polarity.

Xaoc Devices LEIBNIZ #6 / ROSTOCK / delay and loop 8 bits of information / extensive playthrough

video upload by BRiES

"'ROSTOCK by Xaoc Devices should not be taken lightly' is what I figured out while making this video. ROSTOCK can be easily mistaken for just being a delay, but the patch ideas (provided in the manual of ROSTOCK) prove that with some creative insight you can use ROSTOCK for much more somewhat unexpected and useful things.

This video is a slow burn. I start of by proving that high-fidelity audio rate delay is probably not the strongpoint of ROSTOCK, but just like me there will probably be a lot of people hoping that they can still get away with using it as such. That's why I spend a generous amount of time showcasing this feature of the module. I demonstrate and explain how the clock works on ROSTOCK and how to use the seperate clock inputs, as well as exploring the loop and scramble features of the module. Afterwards I go into detail about the patches provided in the manual of ROSTOCK and you'll soon see that this is where ROSTOCK really shines: auto-generative waveforms, patching up a trigger/gate sequencer or 1-bit multi-tap delay, creating chaos and looping melodies, ... ."

Threetom Doppio is now officially available! 🥳

Threetom Modular DOPPIO / clean amp, dirty drive and useful limiter / brief demo / first patches

video upload by BRiES

"DOPPIO by Threetom Modular is a stereo (or two channel) saturator/soft clipper that was designed to bring all the dirt where you want it but remain clean where you need it. You can use it to add huge amounts of noisefree gain to weak signals or to make a clean sound more saturated by using a selectable soft clipping circuit. The most useful feature and the one I will probably use most of the time is the soft clipping 'limit' setting, which gives the user the ability to set a safe master volume and bring in some saturation.

This video is not an extensive playthrough but rather a quick rundown of the features of this brand new Threetom Modular creation. There's a few patch examples in this video but I'm sure I'll make more uploads using DOPPIO when I run into things that benefit from a fresh caffeine shot. I'm confident this will be a great boost to my drumsection (pun intented)."

Joranalogue Audio Design FOLLOW-UP FRIDAY / audio rate modulation with FILTER 8 and FOLD 6

video upload by BRiES

"This week Joran showed us how doing audio rate modulation on ENHANCE 2 can create really interesting stereo effects. Instead of doing the same thing (and because I don't have an ENHANCE 2) I'll be showing you 2 of my favourite uses of audio rate modulation using FILTER 8 and FOLD 6.

Joranalogue Audio Design MISSED OPPORTUNITIES MONDAY / FILTER 8 to shape gates into curves

video upload by BRiES

"In last weeks delayed TECH THURSDAY upload by Joranalogue Audio Design Joran talked about using slew limiters (function generators) as audio rate filters. You can watch that upload here: [posted here]

I could have talked about doing the opposite thing: using FILTER 8 to create envelopes when you run out of function generators. In this Missed Opportunities Monday I do no such thing."

Xaoc Devices ROSTOCK / trying out a phaser and chorus patch / DREZNO / POCZDAM

video upload by BRiES

"I'm just trying out things with ROSTOCK to get a feel for it. This is a patch where I used it to create a phase-shifting or pitch modulation effect (depending on the speed of the modulation). By mixing in the original sound you can get phase cancellation in mono (comb-filtering?) or chorus in stereo."

Schlappi Engineering THREE BODY / extensive playthrough / extremely versatile complex vco

video upload by BRiES

"In this video about Schlappi Engineering's THREE BODY I try to explain and demonstrate the multitude of functions, modulation options, inputs and outputs. There's sound examples scattered throughout the video to break up the monotony of me talking all the time.

THREE BODY is so very versatile and due to it's precise logic based core functionality it's very straightforward to dial in precise FM or PM tones that are usually quite impossible to achieve with regular analog vcos. If you want the dirt of waves bulking and crashing into each other (regular 'free' fm and pm), it's just a flick of a switch and you're there.

Because it's a very long video please have a look at the chapter markers at the bottom of this description box. Those should make it easier for modern crowds to navigate the video. You can of course go retro and just sit back and enjoy the show, but you might have to pause the video halfway to fetch drinks and icecream (and possibly for a bathroom break).

I hope you enjoy this extensive playthrough."

FIGHT & FLIGHT / full system generative 'horror' patch / singing bowl research / farewell Steven

video upload by BRiES

"I started this patch by trying to mimic the tone and frequency beating of a Tibetan singing bowl. Triangle waves seem to be the best match for generating the 'odd' overtones. I used two of them tuned almost to the same frequency to produce a slow beating. One is panned left and one is panned right. I had to run this pair through a LPF to get rid of a lot of the top end fizz.

The other sounds are a bunch of resonating filters and VCOs through Beads tuned up a major 7th with a lot of wet grains fed back to the input. There's some automation going on in terms of gating these, controlled by an output of COMPARE 2 (analyzing ORBIT 3) through a counter (ERFURT).

This week (29th of october) Steven (one of the residents of a farm sanctuary) passed away after a long and hard fight. It's weird and confusing how these events thousands of miles away can still hit you. RIP Steven."

Klavis GRAINITY / Multimode and 'Granular' VCF for eurorack / extensive playthrough

video upload by BRiES

"In this video about the so called granular filter GRAINITY (by Klavis) I run through the basic filtersweeps for the multimode section and then I spend a lot (a lot a lot) of time trying to explain and demonstrate what the different granular patterns (called structures) are and what they sound like.

To be clear about what 'granular' is and isn't when we're looking at Grainity I'll try to explain in a few words. Grainity does not sample incoming audio so it's not like any other gear or software with the word granular attached to it. In Grainity incoming audio is routed through the filter, there's no buffer or recording, there's no grains or scattering. What Grainity in granular mode does is send the audio sequentially through different types of filters with different settings (these sequences are all presets). The speed at which it cycles through these is determined by either the phase/frequency (zero crossings) or by another signal of your choosing that you can send in seperately and by the setting of the division. The length and type of the sequence is determined by the 'structure'.
In a very simplified way you could think of a sound going through a filter that gets modulated by a stepped LFO at audio rates.

PS: If you think you're hearing a delay and a reverb, it's probably because I added those. Grainity does not provide delay or reverb effects, it's just a multimode/'granular' filter. The effects used here are a Quadraverb (reverb) and an MPX500 (delay) rack effect.

For the bulk of the video I'm using the TWIN WAVES Mk2 dual oscillator as a sound source.

Thanks to Klavis for sending over these units for me to test and demonstrate.

____________________________________________

Keep in mind that this module is degraded from being a production unit to being a pre-production unit. Unfortunately I didn't learn about this until after I made the video.

I'll copy and paste Eric's quote about this from Modwiggler: 'After receiving our first production batch of the Grainity, we noticed operating inconsistencies due to the variability of certain parts.
In order to maintain the highest level of quality and to avoid jeopardizing the reputation of the brand, we have decided not to put these modules on sale. A redesign is required, which postpones the availability of the Grainity to a later date.

Thank you for your patience while waiting for a Grainity that meets your expectations. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.'"
