Bad Gear - Why would anyone want this???

video upload by AudioPilz

"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about Roland TR-06 . Does it even make sense to release a digital drum machine based on the not so iconic Roland TR-606 ? Was the analog Behringer RD-6 first this time? Did we need another Roland Boutique reissue of a a vintage drum machine and 80s classic like the tr606 and why would anyone want this ? Do the additional sounds taken from other machines like the Roland TR-808 and Roland TR-909 make a difference?"

DRUM MACHINE Review and Buyers Guide Part 1

video upload by Noisegate

"Drum machines have come a long way in a relatively short period of time. If you think about the first fully programmable drum machines such as the Roland legendary TR-808, that was only a little over 40 years ago. Roland’s first MIDI drum machine, the House and Techno queen that is the TR-909 was manufactured in 1982. It’s nice to reminisce about the 1980s when drum machines became popular, although there’s been some modern classics during this millennium including the Elektron MachineDrum from 2001 and Dave Smith Tempest from 2011. Today there are a plethora of new drum machines all with amazing new features. Yes, many manufacturers these days politely provide a nod to the classics such as the 808, 909 and LinnDrum through to the modern classic in their designs. Here is our mega drum machine guide for the current drum machines that are being manufactured. This project became so big, that we had to split it into two parts, so here is part 1:

Check out the specs and the bits we love from each of these drum machines here: https://noisegate.com.au/drum-machine...

If you think that was mega, we’ve still got plenty more. We’ll be covering the Roland TR-8s, Korg Drumlogue, Erica Synths Perkons and more in part 2...!!

RS040 Novation Drum Station: T-RD 809?

video upload by rejected synths

"When Behringer finally managed to deliver the RD9 to stores, everyone seemed to be very much hyped about it and why wouldn‘t you be? It’s a bit like a budget car brand releasing everyone’s favorite vintage sports car at the price of, well … a budget car … only that the car looks, feels and performs pretty much like the real deal, if not better. So it’s pretty clear everyone is hyped a.f.

But what if I told you it has been done before? Sure, the Novations Drum Station isn’t ‘the real deal’ in terms of some of the functionality, like the sequencer, but it more than makes up for that shortcoming by squeezing both incredibly realistic (for the time) 808 AND 909 emulations into a very compact and very (midi) controllable 19’’ rack unit.

And while RD8 and RD9 are much cheaper than those old school legends, if you just want the sound and control-ability, why not save another 300 bucks (and a lot of shelf space)."

How to make Vocoder Grooves with Behringer VC-340 & RD-8

video upload by Wine&Synths

"People immediately think of alienated, robotic sounding voices when they talk about vocoders. And of course, that's a lot of fun, but it often reaches its creative limits pretty quickly.

That's why I prefer to use a drum machine instead of the voice. And how to transform the vocoder into a funky groovebox with the help of an RD-8, is what I'm going to show you in this video!

To demonstrate this, I make use of a Behringer VC-340 Vocoder which is a stunning replica of the 'Roland VP-330 Vocoder Plus' from 1979. The drumbeat is provided by a Behringer RD-8, which is of course a clone of the famous Roland TR-808.

Peace!

Synthesizer Jam: Scent of Spring - Operator Burstup (TR-808, MiniBrute 2S, TD-3, Model:Cycles)

video upload by Operator Burstup

"This live jam was inspired by a gorgeous morning outside. Blue sky, pink blossoms on the trees in front of the house, nice temperature... spring is awesome. I felt relaxed and was in the mood for another #DubTechno tune, but didn't want to work in the DAW. So once again I played with some of my synths and drum machines.
In this video I'm using my Roland TR-808 (I have it since the 1990s), an Arturia MiniBrute 2S (semi-modular and with an amazing sequencer), an Elektron Model:Cycles (the most fun FM synth I own), a Behringer TD-3 (very good clone of the TB-303) and the Space Echo RE-20. I hope you will enjoy this tune.😸

RD-8MkII + TR-808 + TR-08 Improvised for 8:08 Minutes

video upload by Honeysmack

"What does a Behringer RD-8 MkII, Roland TR-808 and TR-08 sound like when performed together. What can you do with 3x 808s that you can't do with one? Maybe this video simply highlights that I may have a slight gear problem with the 808, but in a good way? Why do I have multiple 808s? I dunno I’m definitely that idiot!

All 3 drum machines are mixed via a Playdifferently Model1 mixer with effects from Eventide Space and Timefactor pedals. No other sound sources used (Octatrack and Analog Rytm used for sync purposes only, not as an audio source). All improvised in one experimental unrehearsed take.

Behringer Introduces the RD-8 MKII

video upload by Behringer

"In our constant pursuit for perfection and authenticity, we proudly introduce the new RD-8 MKII, the most authentic analog recreation ever produced.

This drum machine has been re-designed from the ground up with carefully selected components and circuitry, which have dramatically improved the sound of the voices as well as noise and phase response across both the main and individual outputs.

Most importantly, our engineers - together with our Coolaudio semiconductor sister company - successfully recreated the 40-year-old BA662 chip, which is instrumental for the authentic voices of this instrument.

We’re proud to deliver the most authentic and accurate analog drum machine recreation ever produced.

We Hear You.

List Price: $329 (in stock and immediately shipping from our factory)"

Behringer RD-8 MkII Review by Honeysmack
video upload by Honeysmack

"He is my first review of the new RD-8 MkII.

This video is not a tutorial or a detailed feature run through. As a live Acid Techno improvisor and performer for almost 30 years, I wanted to go through some features I loved and how the RD-8 MKII builds on the spirit of the TR-808 with some nice new sound enhancements and sequencer/performance features. Behringer have said they redesigned some of the key components in an effort to get an authentic 808 sound. The firmware has also been revised.

14:37 RD-8 MK II outro jam

All audio was recorded without any pre/post processing whatsoever, all audio is coming directly out of an old Mackie 24•8 mixer with no EQ. What you are hearing is as raw as possible, with no embellishments.

We all know the 808 sound and it’s hard to not to know it these days as this legendary drum machine has informed a variety of electronic dance music genres from Hip Hop to pop music. Owning an original TR-808 is a rarity these days, I purchased mine over 20 years ago at time before prices went crazy. These days owning vintage drum machines and synths are the fare of privileged people, like old men with ponytails collecting vintage guitars. The RD-8MkII is great riff on the original. The new additions such as filter, wave designer, tuning on the kick, clap offset and the added sequencer features make a great drum machine. I applaud Behringer for producing an affordable, like-for-like clone. This gives more people access and it can only promote more music making! Hope this video provides some insight into this new machine.

Disclaimer: I was a beta-tester on the RD-8 MkII although I do not work for Behringer and they have nothing to do with the making of this video."

Michael's Anthem (Kebu cover): Korg Radias, Arp Odyssey, Yamaha DX7, Moog Sub 37 & Nord Stage 2EX

Marcus Padrini

"In 2017, I recorded a video with a version of this great Kebu song. At the time, I did everything using only Korg Radias and a few other synths, without sequencing, playing just about everything live.

Recently, I had to move the synths to another space, think about a new dimension, position of each instrument, make all the audio, MIDI and electrical cables. After everything was ready, it was time to test the synth sequencing. The idea was to use that same structure as the version of Michael's Anthem (simply because I like it a lot), but now with new elements, sequenced synths to fill this humble version even more :)

This time, the lead was played with the DSI Tetra, great analog synth by Dave Smith. And the noise sweep filter effect was programmed on the Behringer MS-1. Sequencing on account, as always, of the Roland MC-808.

I'm still getting used to the position of the synths, suffering a little in the execution, with the lighting, etc. But soon, everything will be ready to start creating and recording again!'

Original version by Kebu posted back in 2012 here, followed by a live at PIUG performance here in 2016.

Vangelis - Blade Runner (End Titles) - Live by Kebu in Helsinki 2019

Published on Nov 21, 2019 Kebu

"Kebu's all-analog synth arrangement of Vangelis' Blade Runner (End Titles), performed live at Kuudes Linja in Helsinki, 22.5.2019.

Thanks to Mika Knuutila and Jonatan Flinck for operating the cameras, and Sebastian "Baba" Sjöblom for the light show!

Kebu performed the tune using only analog synthesizers, with some parts played live and some parts sequenced. The performance was recorded directly from the mixer to a stereo track, and was later mixed together with the ambience from the room.

Equipment used in this song: Alesis Andromeda A6; Korg Polysix, Poly 61, Mono/Poly; Roland TR-808, JX8P, Alpha Juno 1&2; DSI Tetra, Jomox AirBase99, Touched-by-sound DRM1, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Marion Prosynth, Akai MPC2500 (only for MIDI sequencing), Yamaha 01v96, Behringer X32 Rack (preamps & reverb only), Lexicon MPX1, as well as a midi patchbay and additional preamps for my mixer."

3+3+2 . 3x3+2 | Behringer to Clone the TB-303 ?

Published on Nov 4, 2019 BEHRINGER

Update: details and pics posted here.

So, what's the significance of the video title? What's the 2? Two 303's and a 202 in one box? 3+3+2 = 8. 808 in there? 3x3+2 = 11? Feel free to guess in the comments section below.

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

BTW, see my note on Behringer in the previous post.

The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story and Why Roland Has No Plans for a New JUPITER-8

I don't like to critique but I thought the following was a little funny (also see my note on Behringer below):

"We are very aware of the very strong passion that synth fans have for the JUPITER-8, and some continue to wait for us to introduce a true analog version. This is something we do not plan to do. Our founder Mr. Kakehashi always said, 'Never chase a ghost', and I really understand his meaning. 'Chasing the ghost' of the original JUPITER-8 or TR-808 does not make sense as we will never catch them, and this effort would not align with our vision for the future. Roland has developed many legendary products throughout our history that came from our drive to always design the future by applying the latest technology and our unique know-how from each era. This is our DNA which will never change."

Preceded by:

"Different from the base Virtual Analog of ZEN-Core, the ABM-powered 'Model Bank' synths in the JUPITER-X and Xm reproduce the total character of specific vintage synths including the JUPITER-8, JUNO-106, JX-8P, and SH-101, all with incredible precision. For these synths, we did deep behavioral analysis of elements such as the filter’s curve, range, and response speed, which are different for each model, of course. We even recreate characteristics including oscillator drift driven by temperature changes- we actually put a physical temperature sensor inside the JUPITER-X and Xm to help with this!"

The above is quoted from The Roland Jupiter-X & XM Story posted on Roland's site. There's more to the post, of course, so do check it out, but what I thought was a little funny was the 'Never chase a ghost' quote. They are clearly doing just that, only in the digital realm, not analog. But... they have ventured in analog with the JD-Xa and JD-Xi. Do I think Roland should clone the Jupiter-8 and their vintage analog? No. For one reason: Behringer. Behringer would just put them under with cheaper models, so if I were Roland, I wouldn't bother. I'm guessing the digital clones are more cost effective as well. I'd stay focused on new products just like they are doing now.  Seriously, Behringer has made it so no company will ever bother cloning their previous products.  I heard that Behringer's goal is to not only offer clones of vintage synths, but to become the largest synth manufacturer for both vintage and new designs.  Simply put, the only way to compete will be to create gear that users want and Behringer does not offer for less.
