Autumnism - Benge on the Buchla 100

video upload by Memetune Studio

"Benge Buchlaisms - 'Autumnism'

https://modulisme.bandcamp.com
https://zackdagoba.bandcamp.com

This is a multi-tracked piece made exclusively on the Buchla 100 synthesiser

The modules in the left-hand cabinets are all original vintage units made in the 1960s (apart from the middle 144 VCO which is my own clone made before the current slew of clones released since 2018)

The patch makes use of many oscillators going into the 191 Sharp Cutoff Filter, in bandpass mode, as well as other layers using the Frequency Shifter and Noise Sources

The Random module is a big part of the patches, as well as the Sequencers

But perhaps the most important modules in any patch on the 100 are the 156 CV Processors. This is because of the way Don designed the system, leaving off the CV processing from most modules. So for example, most functions on the modules have voltage control inputs, but no scaling knobs or mixers on them, so the 156 modules are used for this task

In general, I approached the patching for this piece in a fairly ad-hock manner, and just enjoyed patching and playing with the system as I went along, with no particular goal other than exploring the Buchla's warm sonic possibilities, on a very cold, wet, autumnal day"

Entropical Paradise on the Buchla 100

video upload by zack dagoba

"This is a patch similar to the one published on page 141 of Allen Strange's 1972 book Electronic Music, under the heading Real-time Networks. It is a recreation of Douglas Leedy's Entropical Paradise patch from his 1969 album of the same name

This system is mostly original 1960s Buchla, and I have adapted the patch slightly to make use of the 191 Sharp Cutoff Filter, and to take out the 'birdsong' part of the patch which was originally done with pink noise / envelope follower modulation on the main VCO. I still used the VCO, but took out the modulation and put it through the Bandpass Filter instead"

Buchla 100 - 100 noises 02

video upload by

video upload by zack dagoba

"Here are two of the rarest standard Buchla 100 modules, the 185 FREQUENCY SHIFTER and the 191 SHARP CUTOFF FILTER. Actually I didn't realise how rare the 191 actually was until I heard Mark Verbos speaking about it on The Source Of Uncertainty Podcast. As he points out, when do you ever see a vintage photo of a 100 system with one in it? (Answer: not very) Both these are vintage units with green ink - I was so lucky to get them as part of the incredible tiny system I bought ages ago (bottom section of the left-hand cabinet, plus the 112 touch plates). In this patch I am doing the trick where you feedback the filter signal a bit using the 106 mixer to get it to be more resonant. Its in Bandpass mode, and sounds completely great"

Published on Feb 10, 2019 zack dagoba

"How to patch a filter so that it has extra resonance. In this case its a vintage Buchla 100 series Model 191 which has zero resonance in normal use. But like so much with the 100 series, a simple patch-around solution is available. Just send the filter output back in on itself with a mixer, blending the input signal and filter output to get resonance galore. The mixer is used BEFORE the input to the filter, in other words, the mixer used to combine the dry signal with the filtered signal and send it back in on itself. Look at the diagram in the video. "I finally got the Buchla 144 clones built (thanks Mike & Ross). It was quite a journey from getting the boards made, getting the panel designed (including finding the right font) and manufactured / screen printed, to populating the panel and wiring everything up. Times three. And they look and sound superb..."

Hybrid Clone Clapping

Published on Apr 20, 2014 Todd Barton·161 videos

"This is a fairly simple patch which results in some surprisingly enjoyable clapping poly-accented rhythms by just adjusting the 'decay time' and 'note duration' of the 180 Dual Attack Generator. At play are 4 original CBS Buchla modules: 140, 180, 156 and 190. The other 4 are clone/tribute modules made by djangosfire: 110, 165, 191 and 158. Enjoy!
eventually I'll put up a better audio file of this on my soundcloud...standby."

Forms - Series One - 100% Buchla 100 Release by Benge

AN EXPLORATION OF THE BUCHLA 100 ELECTRONIC MODULAR SYNTHESISER

All Tracks created at Meme Tune Studios, London, UK utilising the Buchla 100 modular synthesiser. No additional processors were used in this recording. It should be noted that the Buchla 100 features its own sequencer module and this was used to produce the repeating rhythms in the music on this record and also the melodic and harmonic content. On the first track the voltage controlled touch plates (model 112) were used to produce some of the more performance-orientated sounds on the record. On most tracks the patches were set up and left to run by themselves, with minor human intervention other than adjusting the various potentiometers. The Buchla 100 system is very adept at producing self-perpetuating sounds and it is this aspect of it that is explored here

Buchla 250e sequencer - first impressions

Published on Apr 24, 2013 DJjondent·191 videos

"My first play with the 250e - The Dual Arbitary Function Generator
Just using it as a standard analog sequencer in this video.... learning all about this very deep module.......much more that just a sequencer.

Other Modules used here:
258v - Verbos dual VCO
291e - Triple morphing filter
254v - Quad Voltage Processor
261e - Complex Waveform generator
292e - Quad dynamics Manager
281e - Quad Function Generator
294 - 4 channel Comb filter
207 - 6 channel mixer/pre amp

The 291e is being used as an extra VCO by feeding outputs 1 & 2 back into
their inputs.
The 258v is the sweetest sounding VCO."
