Caterina Barbieri is an Italian composer who explores themes related to machine intelligence and object oriented perception in sound through a focus on minimalism.

Following 2017's acclaimed 2LP "Patterns of Consciousness", "Ecstatic Computation" is the new full-length LP by Caterina Barbieri. The album revolves around the creative use of complex sequencing techniques and pattern-based operations to explore the artefacts of human perception and memory processes by ultimately inducing a sense of ecstasy and contemplation. Computation is turned from being a formal, automatic writing technique into a creative, psychedelic practice to generate temporal hallucinations. A state of trance and wonder where the perception of time is distorted and challenged.

Equally nervous and ecstatic, the fast permutation of patterns can create a state where time stands still whilst simultaneously being in motion. Is this propulsive music moving forward or backward? As long as the perception of the present is constantly enhanced and refreshed in an endless sense of loss, re-discovery and the search for self-orientation this question lies mute aside the thrilling and perplexing moment of the matter at hand."

SchneidersLaden presents SUPERBOOTH19"

"Besides the 250 exhibitors from all over the world, SUPERBOOTH19 offers more than 30 concerts and workshops every day. International artists from all genres of electronic music will be present in the three-day program accompanying the trade fair.

Daniel Miller (Mute Records) will play the full version of his modular live set, Robert Lippok (Raster-Media) will be there, as will Scottish musician and instrument maker Ken Macbeth together with T.Raumschmiere (Shitkatapult). Caterina Barbieri plays a Gesprächskonzert for Frap Tools. Christian Vogel, Barbara Morgenstern, Lucid Grain, CYRK, Kebu, Kypski, Tilted Circle, POND – the keyboard electronics classic of the GDR – and more will be playing on the many stages at SUPERBOOTH19. The winners of Ick mach Welle, a music project that enables people with disabilities to play electronic music, are also represented in the program of SUPERBOOTH19.

Educational Saturday
Saturday at SUPERBOOTH19 will be dedicated to education and thus reflects the tradition of the event space FEZ Berlin. The workshops on Modular Synthesizers and DIY offered especially for pupils and students make Saturday particularly attractive for young people. That applies in particular, because of the special pricing for educational institutions, which can apply for strongly discounted ticket contingents. But also for all other guests there are different educational opportunities in the program on all days of the event.

Although the event offers a daily program until 11 pm, there are still several official aftershow-events to celebrate the rest of the night. The C-Base as a publicly accessible and official venue is complemented by three company events in the OHM-Club – for both locations there is currently a program with a lot of live music in the making. C-Base and OHM can be reached very comfortably with the regular boat shuttle.

Boat-trip to SUPERBOOTH19
The free shuttle service runs several times a day between FEZ and Mitte and ensures a relaxed journey to SUPERBOOTH19 and also back to Mitte. This is a great opportunity to make new contacts, talk shop or enjoy the unusual perspective of Berlin.

Visitors with a trade visitor ticket can enter the fair at 10 am. All other guests can buy full-day tickets, which are valid from 1 pm to midnight and will give you access to the C-Base for the after-show events. If you only want to see the evening program, you can buy tickets from March onwards which allow admission from 6 pm. Children and young people up to the age of 16 can attend the event free of charge."

The Science of Sound | Boiler Room x Genelec

Published on Jul 4, 2018 Boiler Room

"We're celebrating four decades of Genelec with 'The Science of Sound', a series of 16mm films exploring essential production concepts, hosted by Lorenzo Senni, Caterina Barbieri & Not Waving.

Each host premieres brand new material in a format designed to communicate music production tropes through a playful, psychedelic audio-visual language. A blend of surrealist motion graphics, '70s Hollywood aesthetics & an erudite Scandinavian narrator, the series serves as a stylistic flip on the staid world of archetypal production tutorials. A new & compelling guide for budding music-makers."

PATCH & TWEAK - Exploring Modular Synthesis Book on Kickstarter

via Kickstarter:

"The new book about modular synths, their makers, and masters. Patching secrets, performance tips, history, modules, and techniques.

'Hello!

My name is Kim Bjørn – welcome to the PATCH & TWEAK Kickstarter campaign! Following our book PUSH TURN MOVE about electronic music instruments - we are now creating a book on modular synthesis.

We want PATCH & TWEAK to provide an opportunity for new and experienced users to become true masters of their modular systems. In the style of its predecessor, PATCH & TWEAK contains inspirational interviews with significant creators and major artists who all share their passion for modular. Explore their systems, philosophies, patching secrets, and performance tips.

Besides a comprehensive introduction to synthesis and its history, the book covers systematic sections on concepts, purpose and creative possibilities of specific modules. Enjoy colorful diagrams, presentations of both popular and rare modules, semi-modular and software, as well as techniques for patching and how to get started.

PATCH & TWEAK has a foreword by Suzanne Ciani, is written by Kim Bjørn and Chris Meyer, and edited by Paul Nagle.

So what exactly is PATCH & TWEAK? Watch the video, take the tour below, and please support the book by selecting a reward if you like the idea.'

Kim Bjørn, Copenhagen, May 2018

About the book

Meet the makers, and artists

Apart from systematic sections and general subjects PATCH & TWEAK features interviews with the passionate makers of modules and systems, and the artists who use them, and influence them. We have already started interviewing - and when more artists are confirmed, we will keep you updated!

SUPERBOOTH18 Details & Schedule

"SUPERBOOTH18 at FEZ Berlin - 03-05 May 2018 - Trade Fair for Electronic Musical Instruments. The latest developments in (modular) synthesizers, keyboards, effects, studio equipment and software.

Almost 250 exhibitors from all over the world, 22 concerts and Gesprächskonzerte daily, panel discussion, workshops and much more.

It starts at 11:30 am with the spacious boat shuttle starting at Jannowitzbrücke and a trip through the eastern part of the German capital. Arrived at the FEZ Berlin the visitors can enjoy daily at 1 pm the first concert of the still young day program on the Seaside stage, or they can attend one of the beginner workshops on modular synthesizers, one exclusively for women and non -binary persons, and one open to everyone. Gammon, together with a school class, develops a performance for the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble, presented daily at 1:30 pm. Afterwards, at 2 pm, the promotional stage program begins with concerts by Caterina Barbieri on a modern Eurorack modular system and Leon Michener on a prepared grand piano. Altogether there are 11 concerts of this kind daily, on Friday for example with Bernd Kistenmacher on classical synthesizers, as well as Udo Hanten on a 5U modular system. On Saturday, among others, there will be the Gesprächskonzert of Nonlinear Labs with Stephan Schmitt and the C 15 keyboard. Parallel to this, DIY workshops, specialist workshops from the participating educational institutions and the entertainment program of the other exhibitors will take place throughout the day. So it makes sense to come to SUPERBOOTH18 for more than one day, to also watch the concert of Carolina Eyck on the Theremin or Tobi Neumann and Fadi with an ambient performance.

For people who like to sleep a little longer the boat shuttle is available at 2:30 pm or 5:30 pm. Thus one reaches the FEZ Berlin on time for the evening program and for spending some time on the exhibition before the evening program begins at 7 pm. Here #instantboner, T.Raumschmiere & FucketYbUcKetY, Ströme and Tikiman shake hands. With the low -priced ticket for the evening hours you can also see Boys Noiz with 2244, ATEQ, GusGus and many others. Max Loderbauer, who was on the SUPERBOOTH17 stage last year together with Ricardo Villalobos, will play together with Tobias Freund as NSI this year.

Those who like it a bit quieter will be pleased about the film screening of The Potential of Noise, a documentary about the legendary music producer and studio operator Conny Plank. The film is commented and explained by the initiator of the film, the son of the protagonist. On all three evenings there will also be discussions with guests such as Daniel Miller, Uwe Schmidt and Mark Ernestus. Some aspects of The Potential Of Noise will also be addressed here. During Thursday's SOOPERtalk Lady Starlight, Andrew Huang, Lady Blacktronika and Mylar Melodies will discuss the fascinating interaction between humans and machines in the creative context of music making.

The return trips of the boat shuttle at 8:30 pm and 12:00 am take the guests directly to the landing place at the Jannowitzbrücke in Berlin Mitte, from there it is not far to the official after-show location C-Base. The after-show program will be announced at short notice.

More details and additions to the three-day program can be found on the official website. You can also keep up to date by subscribing to the newsletter on superbooth.com.

Caterina Barbieri - Vertical

Published on Jan 3, 2015 caterina barbieri

This one in via IMPREC. Recorded entirely on a Buchla 200. There is a chance there will be an LP pressing in the future.

"From Caterina Barbieri's debut album Vertical (Important Records/Cassauna, 8 October 2014) composed for Buchla modular synthesizer and vocals.

Vertical originates from a meditation on primary waveforms and the polyrhythmic dancing of harmonics in synthetic sounds, stylized in severe architectures of time and space, on the boundary between drone, minimalism and techno in multichannel listening environments. This minimalistic focus arises from the exploration of the stratigraphic potential of voltage-controlled synthesizers, in terms of polyrhythm and polyphony.

"Vertical is Caterina Barbieri's debut album and it was composed for vocals and Buchla 200 modular synthesizer.
Vertical takes a meditative approach to primary waveforms and the polyrhythm of harmonics, stretching the boundaries between drone, minimalism and techno in multichannel systems. This minimalistic focus arises from the polyrhythmic and stratigraphic potential of voltage-controlled sequencers.

Synthesis, drone and immersive listening are three fundamental conditions to enhance an advanced auditory art, not based on extrinsic links but solely built on the experience of the spectrum, able to develop our very limited ability of perceiving the vertical domain of music, involving us in a holistic way.
Caterina Barbieri (1990) is a composer and performer of electro-acoustic music. Mostly interested in modular synthesis, three-dimensional spatialisation and psychoacoustic aural sculpture, her music arises from a meditative approach to primary waveforms and the polyrhythm of harmonics..

She received a degree in classical guitar and electro-acoustic music at the conservatory of Bologna, Italy (plus an exchange programme at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden) with a thesis about time, space and spectrum in vertical music. She's currently attending a bachelor in literature and she's active as audiovisual artist, acousmatic composer and guitarist. Her work has been commissioned and performed in festivals and venues of experimental music."

NOVARS Research Centre in association with Open-Circuit, Salford and Basic Electricity Berlin are proud to present the first edition of the Sines and Squares Festival, celebrating the recent resurgence of analogue and modular synthesizers.

Part festival/part symposium, for the first time in the UK, this event brought together composers, performers, manufacturers, musicologist and DIY enthusiasts in a weekend of concerts, interactive sessions, installations, master classes, demonstrations, workshops and coffee… Guests included two of the most creative of today’s new breed of analogue designers Rob Hordijk of Hordijk Modular (Netherlands) and Tom Bugs of Bugbrand, along with artists such as John Chantler (ROOM40, Café OTO), Lu Katavist (smalldeath.org), Richard Scott (psi, Basic Electricity), Buchla-master Dan P and David Ross (ini.itu records). The festival featured artists working with systems such as Buchla 200e, Haken Continuum, Eurorack, Bugbrand, EMS Synthi, Expert Sleepers, Ciat Lonbarde and Serge.

Sines & Squares is supported by Thonk, Islington Mill, Analogue Solutions, Expert Sleepers, Bugbrand, Frequency Central, KOMA Elektronik and featuring the MANTIS Surround Sound System

The weekend was a unique opportunity to listen, to enjoy, to educate, to meet and to learn more about the history, present and perhaps the future of analogue and modular synthesis. We focussed of the music, the instruments and on the people who build, love and play them.

We hope to deepen and enrich the culture currently surrounding analogue and modular musical technologies and to help build an artistic and discursive community which bridges boundaries, between academic and non-academic electronic music, between the technical and aesthetic, between synthesizers designers and users, between analogue and digital technologies between the past and current artistic practice.

An extraordinary line-up of over 30 artists from the UK, Mexico, Spain, France, USA, Germany, Netherlands, Slovak Republic, Mexico, Italy and Brazil including Rob Hordijk, Tom Bugs, John Chantler, Dennis Verschoor, Sam Weaver, Finlay Shakespeare, Danny Saul, Jo Hyde, Aidan Taylor, Kim Da Costa, Jens Hedman, Lu Katavist, Richard Scott, Jules Rawlinson, Ricardo Climent, Mark Pilkington, Dave Ross, Patrick Gunawan Hartono, Rosalia Soria, Guillaume Dujat des Allimes, Epameinodas Fassianos, Ignacio Pecino, Chelsea Bruno, Tintin Patrone, Nils Knott, Daniel van Eendenburg and the Krachkisten Orchestra, Manoli Moriaty, Melanie O’Dubhshlaine, Mat Dalgleish, Chris Foster, Gary Bromham, Andrew Lowe and James Prosser, Matt Preston, Dave O Mahony, Jim Frize, Andrew Duff, James Parr, Alexander Harden, Nuria Bonet, Alena Mesarosova, Manuel Ferrer, Rodrigo de León Garza, John Macedo, Caterina Barbieri, presented their music, research and ideas and there was space to discuss the music, instruments, the scene and the ideas behind the remarkable recent resurgence of these beguiling and fascinating once thought to be obsolete musical instruments."
