90s (ish) Ambient DnB - Nord Lead 12 Voice, Zoom 1201, FAB Echo, SmplTrek

video upload by ChrisLody

"In the spirit of trying something new here's an attempt at a genre I've never tried before, Ambient DnB. This is something I've always admired when it's pulled off well, frantic background beats with smooth foreground sounds. Not bad for a first go this I think

The SmplTrek is doing most of the heavy lifting here. I used it's 'chop to drumkit' feature to chop up one of my own drum breaks, pitch it up and sequence it into a few variations.

I'm running the output in a kind of parallel processing sort of set up with two channels of the drum breaks hard panned, one high pass filtered and routed to my external reverb on the Zoom 1201 to give me tweaking control of the high frequencies and the other left drum and low pass filtered. Bass and strings also come from the output that is not routed to reverb but these use the internal reverb.

I then play some occasionally successful staccato lead sounds from the Nord Lead through a modded Fab Echo and that's about it."

230108 - Jamuary 2023 - Dungeon Synth Breakbeat

video upload by ChrisLody

"Okay, so. I went into the studio with no clear intention today but thought I'd give the Lofi-12 a rest and make a jam on the SmplTrek. After setting that up and finding that my Nord Lead needs it's button contacts cleaning before I can use it again I grabbed my XFM. Well, to be more accurate I picked up the prototype by accident and found this completely unfinished and unused idea on there. I realised I had something cooking on the Lofi-12 that would fit with it and boom, Unnecessary Dungeon Synth Breakbeat was made.

Dungeon Synth is a genre of music that apes the sound of old early PC FM soundcards and is usually paired with music that would fit in an old adventure game, but why not take that and mess it all up? :)"

Sonicware Liven 8Bit Warps XFM Volca Modular Nord Lead - Downtempo New Age Jam

video upload by ChrisLody

"This jam started off as quite an experimental affair and ended up landing in ambient electronica/downtempo/chilled out/new age music territory. Perhaps because I'm feeling a little nostalgic today. As I've mentioned before on the channel I used to be a carpenter and joiner, I did that for a living for 20 years in fact. To cut a long story short I've decided to go back into the trade after a break of a few years and I'm quite excited but a bit apprehensive, though I've already been out to look at some work and it's only been 3 days since I set up my new Facebook page so that can't be bad 😁 Anyway, my point is this sounds a bit 90s to me which is the decade I was learning the trade. Probably not a coincidence, but it's not even a genre of music I listen to much 🤷‍♂️

So in this jam the Volca Modular has a radio\cassette player plugged into the CV input which is being routed through like it were an oscillator. This enables me to gate the incoming signal. There was some sort of radio play on which gave me plenty of vocal material to work with. I also had to get it done fast though as I wasn't sure when it would finish which is why the video is a bit wonky and blurry on this one, sorry about that.

The radio\cassette in question is a cheap Matsui model that no longer plays tapes but the radio output is impressively loud making it a good fit for playing radio and noise into the Volca Modular

The Sonicware Liven XFM is providing the drums here using a kit that spreads across all 4 track. It's fast becoming my go to drum machine on top of everything else it's good at, more on that in a future video

The Liven 8Bit warps is producing a pad sound using it's lovely lofi FM engine, most of what I'm playing here is improvised. Again I had to work fast so the first good take was the one to use

The Nord Lead is obviously playing the lead sound. Again largely improvised. I learned how to trill on piano recently, maybe a bit too much of that in this to be honest 😄

Effects are provided by the Danelectro Fab Echo on the Nord Lead and the Zoom Studio 1201 routed into my Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 audio interface"

Nord Lead 1 & Korg NTS1 Synth Pads (Are Nice!) - Nostalgia Waves - Ambient Music

video by ChrisLody

"This lazy Sunday ambient jam was inspired by a conversation I had with my wife Esme. During less challenging times she likes nothing more than to go to a Skegness arcade and play on the 2 penny coin push machines, something that I have to say I find pretty boring, normally. It occurred to me while we were talking that currently I'd absolutely love to do that, a day out like that would be amazing. It's moments of realisation like that that make me think just how much the world has changed and how it's kind of crept up on me.

The MiniDisc recording therefore is taken from one of those trips to Skegness and was recorded on a crowded beach full of families and children during the an unseasonably warm summers day. I've got quite a lot of these recordings from the era when MiniDisc (A Sony MZ-N710) was still one of the best portable recording options, and the sounds from them always take me right back to when they were recorded with a strong sense of nostalgia. Possibly because I'm anosmic (google it) I think sound is a stronger trigger for memory than for you 'normals' ;)

The Nord Lead (revised original model with 12 voices and memory card slot) and Korg NTS-1 pairing is something I've been meaning to try for a while and I think it's fair to say they are a good match. The Nord Lead has no effects built in, the NTS-1 has the best effects built in! I'm running it through the Space reverb and some Tape Delay with additional reverb added to the Nord and MiniDisc with my Zoom 1201 set to Ambience 8. I did consider adding another layer, but I like the way it's allowed to breath so I left it alone like this."

Nord Lead Synth Pads & Field Recording - Epic Sci-Fi Ambient Music

Published on Mar 21, 2020 ChrisLody

"I'm not sure that 'Epic Sci-Fi Ambient' is a thing but this is definitely sci-fi and somewhere between epic and ambient, so I'm sticking with it.

So with this one I pretty much made what I actually set out to, which was a Blade Runner ish inspired soundscape 'nice' ambient thing. I'm using the Clavia Nord Lead 12 Voice for pads and lead/bass (I made the pad sound this morning, not sure if the lead/bass is one of mine or a preset tbh), Sony MiniDisc MZ-N710 with a field recording I made of passing cars in the rain back in the early 2000's, both with a boat load of Zoom 1201 reverb. I chose to most random bunch of chords ever but somehow it hangs together.

Absolutely the kind of soothing music I'm looking for at the moment!"

Quick Synth Improv From Scratch - Nord Lead & Zoom 1201

Published on Mar 4, 2020 ChrisLody

"So being the total masochist that I am I've taken on another daily music challenge for March over on Instagram linked to the Electronic Curiosity Collective that come with a set of suggestions you can try for each day. Today's suggestion was to improvise something completely from scratch. So I took it upon myself to create a sound and record something as quickly as possible. I've truncated the sound creation down as much as possible as it get a bit dull, but it took me about 10 minutes to go from a standing start, create a sound whilst coming up with ideas and put this together. Not bad :)

So obviously this is played on the Clavia Nord Lead with the Zoom 1201 providing reverb shown in the frame on a couple of blocks of wood, proper low tech solution. I've been experimenting for a long time trying to move away from playing diatonic notes and chords (notes within a fixed scale) as I increasingly find it boring to listen to and play, so this jam is me exploring just that. Ends up sounding a bit unpredictable this, a kind of untrustworthy vibe maybe."

Clavia Nord Lead 1(1995-97) Retro Review and Tutorial

Published on Feb 18, 2019 ChrisLody

"This is my Clavia Nord Lead 1, an early virtual analog synthesizer from 1996. The first Nord Lead was manufactured between 1995-1997 and originally came in a 4 voice version which was later supplemented with an expansion and an updated 12 voice version that had the same functionality as the expanded synth. I'll show you how to use most of the functions, showing how the oscillators and filters sound and talking about some of it's strengths and weaknesses."

Song-A-Day & #RPM Challenge 16 - 'RFTXRX' on 100% Nord Lead Ambient Music

Published on Feb 17, 2019 ChrisLody

"So here's another 100% Nord Lead track, maybe not quite what I went into the studio to achieve today, but who doesn't like a bit of creepy sci-fi soundscape every now and again? So there's 4 layer of Nord Lead one here with just a touch of reverb in Reaper and nothing more. I really like the Nord's ability to get really weird and wonky when the oscillators are pushed past where they comfortable so I used that a lot here."

Song-A-Day & #RPM Challenge 15 - Lord Need on 100% Nord Lead

Published on Feb 16, 2019 ChrisLody

"Lord Need on the Nord Lead, see what I did there? This was supposed to be a demo of the original Nord Lead in action as a demo for a retro review I've just made for it, but it came out a bit meh so I'll get a better one made before that video goes up. So this was made using all Nord Lead sounds including the drums on it's multi mode with some reverb and delay added in Reaper. Damn good synth, just not in my hands today."

#Jamuary Day 23 - Nord Lead 1 and Korg Ds-10

Published on Jan 23, 2019 ChrisLody

"Here's a bit of Korg Ds10 backing up the Nord Lead 1, 12 voice version. Nothing fancy, just a bit of synth improv business :)"

Always loved the look of the original Nord Lead.

Modded Danelectro Echo as Synth Delay - Review and Demo with Nord Lead 1

Published on Sep 10, 2017 ChrisLody

"A demo and bit of a review for the modded version of the Danelectro Fab Echo on synth. I'm also testing out my 'over the keys' style camera angle I recently set up.

I neglected to mention that I've dropped the output of the Nord Lead to about half to use with this pedal to keep things clean sounding. Turning it up louder will distort at the input which can also be quite useful for adding harmonics to a sound. It also produces no sound without power so I'm wrong when I say true bypass as this is not how that works at all.

I used the instructions on a combination of the 2 links below to mod the pedal:

Live Gig Synth Practice Session - Nord Lead, Yamaha Cs2x, Renoise 3.1

ChrisLody
Published on Aug 6, 2017

"This is a practice session for a live gig I recorded a couple of weeks ago. My wife and I usually perform as Laser Pig, but I was flying solo this time. There are a few rough edges while I warm up!

I'm sequencing a Nord Lead 12 voice, a Yamaha Cs2x, using a mini KP for delay and samples and beats mostly coming from Renoise 3.1 on an old netbook.

0:10 - Weaponised Unicorn
3:25 - Middle Class Murders in Space
8:18 - Pocket Acid
12:02 - Uber Comp (with well timed real life ambulance through the window)
16:55 - Tooling Up Sequence"

Laser Pig live rig synth jam - Renoise, Nord Lead, CS2x

Published on Apr 26, 2015 ChrisLody

"Testing my new and improved live rig for Laser Pig, one of the music projects i have on the go. I've gigged with a setup almost like this before but i've now added an audio interface and switched from SEQ 24 to Renoise 3 running in Lubuntu. My Netbook is only a 1.2Ghz dual core yet Renoise runs amazing well.

So in this setup i'm sequencing midi to the Nord Lead 1 from Renoise which is also doing a few percussion samples. The Nord is routed through Renoise's Convolver reverb through a nice little 'Pulse' 2 in 2 out usb interface i found on a carboot sale yesterday for 4 whole pounds. I've programmed my CS2x to play a sort of digital piano type tone, something that it seems to be very good at, especially when a subtle bit of LFO is added as each voice has it own LFO that are not synced so things get stirred up very nicely. I've added a bit of the Mini Kaoss pad's delay to the CS2x too. I'm cueing patterns live in Renoise with a Korg Nano Kontrol. Everything is mixed through a Xenyx 1002 mixer and the recorded on my desktop machine.

All in all i find this setup very intuitive and fun to use, plenty of power but not so many options that nothing gets done.
