Novation Announces Circuit Components - Sampe Integration for Circuit, Backup and More

Published on Apr 15, 2016 NovationTV

Note the first sentence in the press release below. This is only the first installment, which of course means there will be more to follow. In my recent review of the Circuit I called out two things. One, the Circuit did not feature sample playback, and two, there was no ability back up your work. This update brings both. BTW, if you own an iPad and would like to edit the two synth engines on your Circuit, you'll find my editor linked in my review.

The press release:

"The first installments of new software and features for Circuit - including Sample Import, Synth Editor, Session Librarian and Firmware Update.

Circuit is our inspirational grid-based groove box. Two Novation polysynths and a four-part drum machine, combined with an intuitive grid-based sequencer in a standalone box that will have you making electronic music in minutes.

Circuit Components is suite of tools expanding Circuit giving you all you need to design, create and customise your own unique instrument.

Sample Import

Simply drag and drop samples onto Circuit and create your own pallet of sounds to sculpt, shape, sequence and perform.

Your Samples on Circuit
You have 60 seconds of space (you’re welcome) across 64 slots; use it for drums, one-shots, clicks, pops or bangs. Or chords, samples and synth stabs. Anything short and sweet.

Anything Goes
Any MP3 or WAV; Sample Import will automatically convert your collection to be Circuit friendly upon upload.

Create Sample Packs and Share
Sample Import exports too. Create your collections and save all 64 sounds as a single file. Keep as a backup or share with your friends, it’s all yours.

The Editor

Design complex patches from the comfort of your computer and then unplug for the ultimate standalone workflow.

Full, Unadulterated Access to Circuit’s Nova Heritage
Access every synth parameter of Circuit’s two powerful polysynths. With a little help from us, our close friends at Isotonik Studios have created a comprehensive synth editor, putting everything in your control.

Mix up your Macros
Along with access to all synth parameters on the fly, you can customise Circuit’s eight macro control knobs patch by patch.

Editing for Everyone
You’ve possibly seen this in public beta as a Max4Live plugin, but now you don’t need Live Suite and you don’t need a Mac. Tweaked, refined, and souped-up just a little bit, Circuit Editor’s official public release now runs standalone too, on PC or Mac.

Share your Patches
Not content with keeping your sound design and synthesis skills to yourself? Circuit Editor allows you to save your patches to your computer. Lock them away in secret folder or share them with friends (or just with the Circuit Owners Group on Facebook) – it’s up to you. Make sure the people you’re sharing with have the editor too, though. It’s free.

Need backup?

Back up all of Circuit’s 32 sessions to the cloud for the ultimate peace of mind and recall sessions in seconds from anywhere.
Now you can free up some space and make 32 more sessions worth of tunes, beats and tracks.

The Firmware

To use these Circuit Components, you’ll need the latest firmware: Circuit v1.2 unlocks compatibility, along with the usual bug fixes, new features; some user requests, and a few of our own ideas.

Play with Other Controllers
· Record MIDI notes from external instruments plugged into Circuit: either chromatically, or tuned depending on your choice of key and scale.

· Manipulate Circuit’s macro controls from an external MIDI controller and record as automation. You can even use your iPad.

Play with Ableton
· Automatically sync Circuit up with Live and easily record MIDI from your session – in tempo, in time, in key – with just a few clicks. You can even record your MIDI tracks from Ableton in one key and change it later in two button presses onboard Circuit.

Momentary Record
· Hold record, punch in and overdub notes or macros without losing your flow - or accidentally breaking your existing work.

Step Edit
· Even easier step-by-step automation: have a different pitch on your drums for each hit. Add FX to one note in a sequence. With the potential for a different sound on every step for every track, you don’t need to do the maths to know that adds up to unimaginable potential – for deliberate creativity or happy accidents.

External Preset Select
· Remotely switch the sound of either of Circuit’s two synths on the fly using MIDI program change messages. Remotely switch the sound of any of Circuit’s four drums on the fly using MIDI CC messages. From any MIDI source.

About Circuit Components

Within days of it landing in public hands, it became clear that Circuit wasn’t just inspirational for making music. It seems as though everybody who gets hold of Circuit has something to say about what it could be - as well as how great it already is, of course.

These ideas, coming in through email, Facebook, even over the phone to our support team, are the direct inspiration for Circuit Components.

So perhaps what we’re suggesting is: if you want to know what’s coming next, ask the users."

Knobcon 23:Circuit Happy Missing Link Junior

video upload by sonicstate

"Back at KnobCon 2023, (yeah we know its been a while - lets just say there was data recovery in play) Ed Guild from Circuit Happy unveiled their latest innovation, the Missing Link Junior.

The Missing Link Junior is the successor to the original Missing Link Desktop, which faced challenges in production due to parts shortages and manufacturing issues. To overcome these hurdles, Ed went back to the drawing board and completely rebuilt the device, leveraging the hardware platform of their previous product, ML2. The result is a clock generator with enhanced robustness, addressing previous jitter issues.

This new hardware promises a seamless clock output, ensuring precision in synchronization for music production. The Missing Link Junior features Ableton Link integration, allowing it to synchronize with other devices over Wi-Fi, even if they are not running Ableton Live, making it an essential tool for any musician looking to maintain tempo and timing consistency during performances. The device also boasts a handy safety feature that allows users to reset synced devices in case they fall out of sync. With a proper MIDI port and analog sync outputs, the Missing Link Junior offers a more modular-centric option for those looking to expand their music setup.

The product is expected to hit the shelves in two to three weeks, with a price tag of $240 USD, while the previous model, ML2, is priced at $215 USD.

For more information on the Missing Link Junior and Circuit Happy's range of music production tools, visit their website at Circuit Happy."

Korg Monologue, MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, NTS-1, Lone Rider

Korg Monologue, MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, NTS-1, Lone Rider part 1

Waveformer

"First part of a three-part jam, featuring the Korg Monologue, Arturia MicroFreak, Novation Circuit, Volca FM, and with Zoom MS-70CDR and Korg NTS-1 on effects.

My music on Bandcamp: http://waveformer42.bandcamp.com/

This jam was originally planned to be around 45 minues, with lots of different parts, and lots of different solos played live on the Monologue. All planned out over 3 sheets of paper with plenty of notes scribbled all over. I did record a 45 minute take, but wasn't happy with the performance so I decided to scrap it. And ... playing the whole thing live was kind of daunting, so I chickened out and decided to make this a three part jam with a common soundset and some common themes.

This is the first of the three planned parts.

The Missing Link from Circuit Happy - KnobCon 2018

Published on Sep 13, 2018 Marshal Arnold

"The Missing Link from Circuit Happy - KnobCon 2018

While doing my showroom walk I was stopped by the folks at the Circuit Happy Booth! They have created a little sync box that wraps up the Ableton Link feature into a standalone device and will allow users to sync up separate modular and or eurorack rigs and iOS aps.

Please excuse my shaky cam, I got so excited that I started just chatting and forgot to focus on the presentation.

The Missing Link is a very cool device and I can see the power of having the Ableton Link protocol in a standalone device!"

Break (original song on Circuit synth) - and a thank you! | Deerful

Published on Nov 4, 2016 Deerful

One more below!

"A quick original song from me, on the Novation Circuit again. Excuse the state of my workspace, and please do like and subscribe if you'd like to see more. Lyrics and explanation of my weird recording method under here...

Break under the waves that call your name
Shake under the weight of all you made
Even though it’s hard to forget
All of the shadows that descend
Take all of the fears you had away

Wake up from the sleep that bears the cost
Ache deep in your heart for all you lost
As the morning comes to find you
And as the night is at an end
Make all your amends and seize the day

CHORUS
Pull back from the tide that drew you in
Face into the sun that warmed your skin
Sing out for the ones who caused you pain
Rise up and be happy once again
Look out from the shore to see the sky
Let go of the past and question why
Sing out for the ones who caused you pain
Rise up and be happy once again

Break under the waves that call your name
Shake under the weight of all you made
Even though it’s hard to forget
All of the shadows that descend
Take all of the fears you had away

My 8-bit EP, Home, is out on WIAIWYA now: https://wiaiwya.bandcamp.com/album/ho...

Someone asked how I recorded this - this is how:
USB cardioid mic into Ableton, track muted; circuit into iRig Pro into Ableton, track soloed but very low volume so I can *just* hear it enough to sing with but there's not much bleed into the mic and I can mix them separately. I'm mostly using visual feedback from the Circuit to sing to. I hate performing with headphones enough that I'd rather do it like this even though I know it's a stupid setup."

Novation Introduces Circuit - New Stand Alone Grid-Based Groove Box

Uploaded on Sep 23, 2015 NovationTV

Novation reveals what's behind their "Start Something" campaign (previously posted here). Watching the videos I was expecting some sort of DAW software or controller. When I first saw the image of the Circuit, I thought my expectations where confirmed.  Well, it might look like another DAW controller, but it isn't. This is a stand alone production system with the synth engine built in. The engine includes two six voice Novation analog modeling synths with wavetables, a four-part drum machine, and built-in delay and reverb. Don't miss by Q&A with Novation at the bottom of this post!  The Circuit can be battery powered and has built-in speakers for full portability. All for a MAP of $329, available in October.  Full details follow.

"This is Circuit. In this performance video, Harry Coade takes us through just some of the functionality of Novation's latest release. Sequencing beats with the 4 part drum machine, playing in harmonic sections with 2 desktop poly synths, adding mixer and fx tweaks and browsing through 32 different performance sessions allows you to start something quickly."

"Sometimes, starting a track can be a difficult and daunting task. We're sure that like us, you've sat staring at a screen overwhelmed by the choice of plug-ins, struggling to write a beat that inspires you, a melody that doesn’t sound corny.

As our 'Start Something' series has illustrated, inspiration can come in many shapes and forms, from taking a break from the studio and just living life to digging through vinyl and hunting for that elusive sound to get the ball rolling.

We suffer from this problem too and wanted to create a solution. We wanted something small and portable, something that doesn't sound like a toy, something that gives maximum creative output from minimum input, something that encourages exploration and creates ‘happy accidents’. That's why we created Circuit.

Circuit is a standalone groove box that combines Nova-heritage synths with expertly sculpted drums. It’s all you need to make music anywhere. You don't need to buy three different things. With Circuit you can create an entire tune by combining up to 128 steps of synth and drum patterns, then add space, depth and energy to your music with built-in effects. It even has built in sidechain. When you’re done, save your tune to one of 32 slots.

The intuitive navigation delivers immediate results, scale modes ensure that you never hit a bum note and cleverly mapped macros deliver deeper personalisation, ‘happy accidents’ and moments of genius.

With Circuit, making a genuinely decent sounding track requires very little effort and takes minutes not hours. And because it’s battery powered you can do it all on the bus, then take it back to your studio and finish it in your DAW.

Make new electronic music quickly and easily with a standalone groove box that combines Nova-heritage synths with expertly sculpted drums.

Circuit is designed to inspire. Two Novation polysynths and a four-part drum machine, combined with an intuitive grid-based sequencer in a standalone box that will have you making electronic music in minutes. Hit some pads, tweak the knobs and your track will start to emerge, all locked in time and key. Play around with effects, patterns and sounds in real time, to produce your track, brimming with fat grooves and beats.

Compact and battery powered with a convenient built-in speaker, Circuit can be used to make music entirely on its own. In the studio it will work alongside your standalone synth gear and run in sync with your music software too. In short, it's all you need to inspire, create and play new tunes.

Ideas in Seconds. Tracks in Minutes
Circuit inspires, straight out the box. It combines a 2-part synthesiser and a 4-part drum machine with a 4x8 RGB velocity-sensitive grid sequencer, which will have you finding new musical directions and creating electronic grooves in no time.

Stand Alone
Compact and battery-powered, Circuit truly stands alone. You can create entire tunes from scratch without a laptop, then save them and play them back live. You don’t even need speakers, because it has a one built in. Of course, Circuit will plug in to your sound system and work with your computer and other synth gear too, via its Line outputs, USB and MIDI ports.

Isotonik Studios Releases Novation Circuit Editor

via Isotonik

"COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT!?
When the Novation Circuit first got pushed across our desk we just got it, in minutes we had a simple tune up and playing whereas with other synths we’d hit brick walls after an hour of fiddling and then we’d pull the plug on the project without finding that spark of inspiration!

Novation then invited us to their head office in High Wycombe to finish work they’d started in an Max patch that would edit the inbuilt sounds for Synth’s ONE and TWO. It was ground we’d trod before in our work with LaunchSync and the LaunchControl XL Step Sequencer, however nothing would prepare us for how deep this one went…

After a few beta rounds of testing, it became apparent that we could develop something pretty special. We’d need a little more help from the team behind the development of the Circuit though. So after a few lengthy Skype sessions the gauntlet was set down…

We all agreed that we wanted to unlock the potential behind the Circuit and develop an Editor that would allow the user to fine tune or completely reshape the onboard sounds. Novation began by developing the latest firmware based on our requests, then we set about providing bi-directional feedback from the unit to the Editor, the advantage of being able to edit the Factory Settings and save them back to session slots was soon surpassed with the ability to overwrite the patches stored in the Circuits ROM. You got two Nova Synths and a bank of 64 patches to play with so that should be plenty!

Knobcon 2023 DivKid Vids

video upload by DivKid

"All DivKid videos from my trip to Chicago, USA for Knobcon 2023"

Playlist:

1. 73-75 era Serge in the black panel 'Quasar' system // Prism Circuits at Knobcon 2023
Here we meet Sky from Prism Circuits who takes us through what he offers in the 4U Serge format, specifically taking us through his black panelled QUASAR system which uses classic 1973 - 1975 era Serge circuits.

2. Uncontrollable Rhythms from Moon Cycles and beyond // Pet Rock at Knobcon 2023
Here's Jonah from Pet Rock taking us through his sell out, sold at cost, first Eurorack module 'Pet Rock'. The module uses moon cycle data and random number generations to create two complimentary or drifting rhythms of varying step lengths and pattern densities. It's a fascinating concept that could lead to "good days and bad days" for your rhythms.

3. QV-L a POWERHOUSE of a Eurorack modulation source // Five12 at Knobcon 2023
Here's Jim Coker of Five12, of numerology and Vector fame, taking us through his new QV-L 'quad variable LFO'. It's a real powerhouse of a modulation module with 4 outputs, multiple clocking and frequency options, internal modulation, random generators, customisable control/performance options, syncing to the Vector sequencer for additional program changes and lots more.

4. NEW way to WAVETABLE! with Alias Zone & Osiris // Chris Meyer & ModBap at Knobcon 2023
Chris Meyer of Learning Modular & Alias Zone has A NEW WAY TO WAVETABLE!

Chris has been working on a new X and Y based wavetable systems that does two fascinating things, firstly it "samples" his whole large studio system while keeping that performable and responsive in the ModBap Modular Osiris and secondly he's using harmonics and interval sets to create morphing tunings within those sounds too.

This wavetable pack will be released for free through the ModBap site in the near future.

5. A Modular Approach to Eurorack Mixing with BARTENDER & BARBACK // After Later Audio at Knobcon 2023
Here we have several new modules from After Later Audio from Knobcon 2023. Lenny takes us through Bartender, Barback and Cast Iron which make up a new expandable, modular approach to Eurorack format mixing.

6. Simple solid clock sync! The Missing Link & ML:2 (Ableton Link) // Circuit Happy at Knobcon 2023
Giving the demo without any audio to listen to is a big move. A bold move made possible by rock solid behaviour from the devices from Circuit Happy. We have The Missing Link Junior and ML:2 Eurorack modules that are both Ableton Link enable devices for not just clock sync and reset but bar position aware behaviours for triggering and syncing to the patterns too. Impressive all round.
7. Better Spring Reverb! (with more filter features than your filter?) // Bubblesound at Knobcon 2023
It was great to meet David from Bubblesound at Knobcon 2023. I've been a long time user of his modules and he's consistently made quality modules over the years. The upcoming Spring Reverb module looks at Spring Reverb options in existence and aims to make them better, a fully featured SEM style multimode filter is on the module so you can really shape what's going into the physical spring, changing it's behaviour and sound. There's on board feedback which David is leaning into in this video too for more experimental patching.

Apologies for the noise hiss. I'll sort that out for next time."

Under the Tree with Novation Circuit

Published on Dec 8, 2015

"Here I am sitting under the Xmas tree with my Novation Circuit. I hope this video helps those of you interested in investing in one. You can see me create something quickly from scratch near the end of the video (https://youtu.be/rukEjtzHgHw?t=541). Track list is below:

Floatation Tank Thoughts https://youtu.be/rukEjtzHgHw?t=25
Bad Bloke https://youtu.be/rukEjtzHgHw?t=292
Shinjuku Nights https://youtu.be/rukEjtzHgHw?t=372

What I like about the unit:

- Firstly, the visuals on the system really help. It's not just a pretty face. The visual sequencer, integrated keyboard, pattern control, gate/velocity etc everything is so intuitively laid out in front of you. So, no deep menu diving.
- Exploration. This can also, understandably, be a negative aspect. But, if the user embraces the lack of labelling of what the encoders (knobs) do for each patch and just explore, more often than not, happy accidents occur!
- Automation. Recording the knob tweaks is awesome. Also, the visual feedback from the little LED is really helpful. As well as the live automation recording, there is the ability to step input knob tweaks, a la parameter lock-like (see Elektron units) functionality.

Things that could be improved:

- Quick audition of patches. As there are no little screens, choosing from the 64 patches can be difficult to remember and therefore lotto-like. A quick middle C preview would be great. Albeit, whilst Play button is disabled.

- No biggy for me, but a nice to have. Panning. The stereo width can be adjusted for parts using some of the delay presets, but that's not ideal.

That's all I can think of for now. Hope you enjoy the video. Look out for more. Please leave a comment and like ;)"
