"Nord's Wave 2 is an update of one of their most interesting instruments, providing deep options for layering diverse ranges of sound.

The Wave 2 can produce up to four layers (timbres) at once, each with independent selection of sound production method. The included sound engines provide access to virtual analog synthesis, FM, wavetable synthesis, and sample playback...meaning that the Wave 2 can sound like basically anything you want. Create complex splits and layers, and morph multiple parameter values in real time: the Wave 2 is a sound designer's dream.

Perhaps most interestingly, Wave 2's sample engine supports the use of user
samples via Nord's Sample Editor 3 software. You can either assign specific
samples to specific keys or use samples across entire stretches of the keyboard—meaning that you can create Mellotron-like playback from any sound, or construct unique kits of sound effects. "'Iceland Part 2': Hardware techhouse live jam with Electribe Sampler 2, DSI Mopho, Korg Volca Bass, Arturia Microbrute and Clavia Nord Lead 2x.
In Summer I posted a synth/wave track called "Iceland Part 1" with footage from a trip to the countryside of Iceland The present hardware jam is the second part of this series, this time less wave, more techhouse, but lots of Iceland footage.

Electribe Sampler plays drums and serves as hardware sequencer for Mopho (bass), Microbrute (lead sequence) and Volca Bass (rhythm sequence with fifth). None of the internal sequencers used because the Electribe gives way more options and allows for longer patterns. The Nord Lead is played live with keyboard split (left side pad, right side FM-tremolo-lead)

This site is a labor of love and a ton of work. This site is ultimately meant to be an testament to everything synth in the making. We have over nine years of daily synth history captured here, 119,983 published posts. I can't wait to see what the future brings us in 2015!

What a busy year it has been in the world of synths.

This is going to be one doozy of a post, so bear with me. This post is a review of the year in synths for 2013. We begin with Tributes to Those We Lost This Year, followed by New Manufacturers & Makers, Older Manufacturers Added to the Site, New Gear Announcements, Top 10 Posts by Traffic,  My Standout Posts for the Year, and finally This Years' Synth Events. I did my best to keep things as short and concise as possible.

Let's begin with the hardest part of the post.

New Manufacturers & Makers

Starting last January, I decided to keep a running list of every new manufacturer and maker introduced to the site during the year.  This is something I haven't done before and I thought it would be interesting to see how many there were in the year.   It's easy to focus on the big synth announcements throughout the year, but what about all the new makers and brands? I shouln't have to go considerably into the significance of new designers on the scene, so I'll just say two things regarding them.  One, the number of new makers is a direct reflection on the interest in our scene, and two, these are the creators of new gear which directly translate into new designs not previously available to us.  Think about that for a moment.  These are makers and designs that did not exist before.  They are part of our synth history.  So what is the total count of new synth designers for the year? A whopping 113. Think about that a bit. One hundred and thirteen new synth designers and brands this year alone.

CLAVIA NORD LEAD 3 20-VOICE PERFORMANCE SYNTHESIZER

"At first glance Nord Lead 3 may look like a 'beefed up' Nord Lead 2 but don't let your eyes fool you - it's a completely new synthesizer. With the first Nord Lead, Clavia introduced the "Virtual Analog" concept: analog synthesis emulated in real-time by digital signal processors, coupled with a fast and immediate 'one-knob-for-each-function' user interface. With Nord Lead 3 "Virtual Analog" is not a correct definition anymore - it can do so much more. Take for example the new sound engine: a combination of traditional shapable analog waveforms and an extremely user-friendly 2 or 4 operator FM engine. It's about all you need to create most types of electronic sounds. Like before, no samples or wavetables are used - everything is generated in real-time for outstanding sound quality and expressiveness. With Nord Lead 3 the 'Virtual Analog' synthesizer steps up to a higher level. That's why Nord calls it an 'Advanced Subtractive Performance Synthesizer.'.."

The Nord Lead 3 departed from the characteristic Nord Lead sound of the 1 and 2, which later returned again in the Nord Wave and now the 4.  It is definitely an interesting synth in history.

Clavia Nord Rack 3 Performance Synthesizer

The Nord Lead 3 was the one Nord Lead to deviate from the original's synth engine.  It's engine was new and built from the ground up.  The Nord Lead 2, Nord Wave and new Nord Lead 4 engines are based on the original.  The 3 is said to have a more lush sound while the others are more dry and aggressive sounding.   The original Nord Modular sounds like the original Nord Lead as well.  I  believe the G2 might mix the two, but I forget.  If anyone knows, feel free to comment.  Regardless the 3 is in essence a completely different synth than the other Leads vs. being an update to an existing synth engine. It's interesting when you think about it.
