VEKT - Portable Drum Computer V.4

video upload by uszymyszy

"Hi! Here is v.4, I redesigned the enclosure to be more rugged, we have also a battery and speaker. Most of the errors are solved, the UI is quite cluttered yet and I make a lot of missclicks/wrong shortcuts but after some tweaks everything should go fluent.

The idea is to have a pocket version of Ableton workflow, simplified but easy enough to create sketches for further polishing in DAW. I plan to build several units for testers but is still a lot of work to do and I cannot guarantee anything at the moment. I will try to progress as much as possible to finish this in this year."

And from one year ago:

Vekt - Portable Drum Computer

video upload by uszymyszy

"I built a Pocket Operator alternative. It can now record and play internal synths. There are 4 engines:
- Bass (Roland TB-303 mod),
- Lead (8bit style),
- Braids (implementation of Mutable Instruments eurorack module),
- Wavetable (several waves mixed by knobs)

I hope the UI is self explanatory, it is focused on simplicity and uses Ableton-like mini session view to launch clips"

The first prototype was shown 3 years ago on reddit.

It looks like a Dirtywave M8 tracker, but is different in both build layout and function. From the creator:

"M8 is a stunnig device for complex projects, I plan to keep my Vekt operator more like pocket op where you can quickly create sketches/ideas and polish them later on DAW. And the main idea for me personally was to quickly create rhythmic sequences which I can use with my visualization app instead making them in DAW, this will speed up the process."

Uptempo jam with Midicake ARP, Dreadbox Nymphes, Moog Minitaur, Mother 32, MSW-810, DrumBrute Impact

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I've had this chord progression kicking around for a little while, the product of a voice-leading exercise I was doing. I was super happy with it but never able to incorporate it into a larger arrangement. Recently, I realized I could just run the chord progression through the Midicake ARP and get some inspiration on the song arrangement, and sure enough, that was all it took (along with a few amazing synthesizers and effects). Really happy with where this one ended up.

Full disclosure: I cut and paste a previous drum fill to the outro drum fill, because I felt the outro drum fill didn't match the quality of the earlier one. Seemed a more judicious approach than recording the whole thing again.

Thanks for listening.

Dirtywave M8 - chord progression sequence
Midicake ARP - four-part sequencing arranger for the chord progression
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI Thru out to five devices
DrumBrute Impact through Empress EchoSystem - Drums
Moog Mother 32 through Kinotone Ribbons - Slower mono synth
Michigan Synth Works MSW-810 through Hologram Chroma Console - Faster mono synth
Moog Minitaur through Boss DM-101 - Bass synth
Dreadbox Nymphes through Empress Reverb - Pad synth

Performed and recorded live (minus that small drum edit) to a multitrack recording, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Neutral Labs Elmyra 2 - Drone Synthesizer // Demo, Tutorial and Opinions

video upload by Dexba

"SUBTITLES AVAILABLE (in many languages!) I've had the lucky chance to be able to check out the Elmyra 2, by Neutral Labs. It has a very interesting approach to performance and sound building: it looks easy, but it can get way deeper than you think. After playing with it for a long while, I decided to offer you a tour of its functions, plus my (unrequested) opinions, all in this desktop configuration. Since the video was getting pretty long already, even by just covering the basic functions, I decided to keep the eurorack approach for a later time, also because that would have prompted me to give even more (unrequested) opinions, and the possible combinations of modules would have been endless (except for the mandatory huge reverb!). In this video, I used the very good reverb on the Dirtywave M8 Tracker, which was very handy because of its 3.5mm jack and the capability of isolating just the active channel on the cable. I hope you'll find the video useful, in its "overview" part, and I hope the "opinion" part could spark some constructive debate."

Simple rhythmic variations w/ Hologram Microcosm, Dirtywave M8, MT-32 pi, TX-6 & RK-006

video upload by Arman Bohn

"Generative patterns from the M8 are producing the rhythms and bass. M8 is also sending random chord information to the MT32 pi. The MT32 is playing back an E piano soundfont that is sent through the microcosm.

The microcosm is kind of like my therapy right now. I can feed it generative random stuff and play with the knobs and occasionally make some really magical sounds."

Therapsid mk3 (multitimbral sequencing)

video upload by

"Hi this a track I converted to sequence the Therapsid.

Disclaimer this Therapsid was sent to me by Twisted Electrons and I spent so long working with them to get the firmware all working nicely so it worked as expected from someone that uses c64's as well as synths, I'm going to mark it as a paid promotion anyway though.

The track is called 'There's still time' , I originally made it on a Digitakt using samples. Here it is being sequenced by a Dirtywave M8.

I have quite a few clips of the Therapsid on my instagram if you would like to see them as the firmware progressed to where it is today.

Find my content entertaining or helpful? you can make my day by buying one of my songs at https://avrilcadabra.bandcamp.com/rel..."

Osmose Expressive E, Dirtywave M8, and Numa X GT, Live at the Lakely

video upload by John C.S. Keston

"This is the last in a series of live audiovisual collaborations with Chris LeBlanc and Shawna Lee. The performance was captured at at the Lakely in the Oxbow Hotel, Eau Claire, Wisconsin (https://www.theoxbowhotel.com/lakely/) on September 30, 2023.

Chris LeBlanc and Shawna Lee produced live visuals using their integrated, modular video synthesis systems as I performed. This piece titled, Dark at the End of the Tunnel, is an electro-acoustic piano composition. In this adaptation I used a a stage piano, but the processing and accompaniment are as they would be if the piece were performed on an acoustic instrument.

Please take a look at Chris’ (@blindprophet) and Shawna’s (@iamadot) Instagram feeds to see more of their work.

Chris and Shawna produced live visuals using their integrated, modular video synthesis systems as I performed. This as yet untitled piece is driven by morphing drums and sequences on the Dirtywave M8 tracker. I also live looped a Rhodes pattern on the Numa X Piano GT. The formant-filtered-voice-like-lead was played on the Osmose Expressive E.

I’m thrilled with the analog visuals that Chris and Shawna produced. The image above shows Shawna’s (left) and Chris’ (right) video systems. Please take a look at their Instagram feeds to see more of their work:

A very rhythmic and noizy night.
The ASTROGENIC HALLUCINAUTING set was leaning into what I like to call Tek-Noiz.
Not my usual sonic landscape of black ambient drone and noiz.

The noiz circuit consisted of:
- Two Dirtywave M8 beasts
- Polyend Play
- BeniDub DS71
- Deaftone Audio MIKSHER
- ERM Multiclock
- Ciat-Lonbarde Peterlin
- FaderFox PC12
- 1010 Music BlueBox

Broken beats w/ Pikocore, Dirtywave M8, Roland J-6, TE TX-6

video upload by Arman Bohn

"More experiments with the pikocore. Random chord triggering sent from the M8 to the J-6. The Pikocore is synced to the J-6 which is clocked to the M8.

I’m syncing key changes to the random chords as well. I think I’ll continue down this path towards actual pseudo random song creation … so possibly more M8 + J-6 combos in the near future. The modulation options on the J-6 are nonexistent sound design is incredibly limited. I could use another mini synth instead, maybe the great conjunction, or the kasser arcade. but that would take more cord wrangling in the m-8."

This is the first post to feature the pikocore.

Pseudo random chill FM beats Great Conjunction, Dirtywave M8, TX-6, Phantasmal Force

video upload by Arman Bohn

"Every week the wonderfully purple Great Conjunction, gets a little tiny bit closer to being completed. No major breakthroughs on the software front but I did squash a few bugs and probably created a few more. I spent a good deal of time reworking the PCB to incorporate a new audio output circuit. I’ve ordered up most of the parts that I’ll need for the next batch of five prototypes, and I hope to order of the prototypes within a week.

The GC provides most of the melodic and chordal work here, with key changes coming from the M8. The Phantasmal Force is simply controlling the volume levels on the M8, which is itself providing the bass and drums."

A spot on the beach at night - Phantasmal Force, Dirtywave M8, Great Conjunction, TX-6

video upload by Arman Bohn

"Almost summer. Microscopic particles of pollen. Aliased waves hit an 8-bit shore.

 Sometimes things come together.

Phantasmal Force controls, mute on the M8. The Great Conjunction produces generative rhythms, and bleeps."
