Paul T Schreiber of Synthtech / MOTM Retires From The Synth Business

"After 27 years, I have retired from the synthesizer business. I still have a #day_job which will last until Dec 1st. The last set of 16 modules shipped to Patchwerks in Seattle, including the last E520 Hyperions.

Is there a chance someone will buy my IP and continue the product like? I keep hoping. Thanks to everyone who were friends and customers."

---

The man behind MOTM and Synthtech/Synthesis Technology retires. Paul Schrieber was making modular synths in the MOTM 5U format before eurorack took off. He essentiall started his own format, 5U in height like Moog's MU 5U but different. See this old post for a pic of different modular formats. He made his modules available in both DIY and finished form. You all should be familiar with MOTM and Synthech if you are regulars of the site. If not, see the MOTM and Synthech labels for posts over the years.

Since the launch of this version of MATRIXSYNTH back in 2005, there have been a total of 831 MOTM posts, and roughly 367 Synthtech posts, including this one. I say roughly as there was another Synthtech that made the Chroma Cult - Rhodes Chroma MIDI Interface, that shares the Synthtech label I used to get the count. The first post to mention MOTM dates back to This EAR post on July 30, 2005, the second to MOTM Madness - Featuring Yamaha GX1 Filter clone on August 4, 2005. Sadly the mp3 linked there is gone. People let their sites go unfortunately. The first post to mention Synthtech is the Epic Son video by John L Rice from back on August 2, 2011. His designs also made it into non modular synths like this Studio Electronics Omega 8 w/ MOTM CS80 & 440 Filters.

First patches with the Synthesis Technology E520 Hyperion Effects Processor // Lush Eurorack FX

DivKidVideo

"Here’s the final released version of the E520 Hyperion Effects Processor from Synthesis Technology. It’s been great to explore this and film my first patches playing with the release version after initially exploring an earlier prototype (links to that below). This video looks at 7 algorithms exploring different patches and some of what the E520 offers. Future videos will explore the algorithms in detail in my usual ‘deep dive’ style looking at the time based and spectral based effects.

Video Manual: Synthesis Technology E520 Hyperion Processor

Learning Modular

"This is a video manual I created with the help of Synthesis Technology for their new E520 stereo Eurorack-format Hyperion Processor. It features both updates of a number of classic effects, as well as new frequency and time domain processing tricks, all while keeping a very flat menu with a small number of powerful parameters – most of which have dedicated knobs and voltage control. Below is an index to the features:

00:00 demo of a few of the Presets
00:40 overview
01:12 front panel controls & connections
01:51 audio connections
02:33 Auxiliary output
02:46 menu & navigation overview
03:01 changing Algorithms
03:40 getting back to the Main menu
04:00 editing an Algorithm
04:58 Bypass to unprocessed input
05:07 Feedback & Wet/Dry mix
06:02 live controls
06:35 loading & editing algorithm-specific presets (Page 3)
07:38 external voltage control
08:35 Tap Tempo
09:40 Page 2 settings
10:36 internal LFOs
11:22 High Pass and Low Pass Filters
11:55 saving a Preset
12:46 Top menu
13:04 module-wide Patches
13:32 Preferences (including display options, Input/Output Levels, and Feedback Limiter)
15:17 SD card “whole module” save & load
15:23 UI colors
15:48 Utilities (scope, tuner, and more)
16:07 Dual Mono algorithm
16:15 conclusion

*Note that this video was shot using pre-production hardware and firmware (v.13 and .14). It was very close to the final version both, so shipping units should behave the same (with the exception that I set the display background color from blue to black to make it easier to read on video). Firmware updates beyond version 1.0 will of course introduce changes not covered in this video.

"Just some Quantum noodling and looping. Sorry again for the abysmal internet connection messing up the live stream. I'm going to make a habit of at least recording the audio separately from now, so if the stream is ruined I can still upload the unaffected audio."

E520 Hyperion Processor + Yamaha W5 = Ambient Space Music | "Indigo Ray" by Moot Booxle

Published on Jan 21, 2020 mootbooxle

"Let's go to OUTER SPACE! The Shimmer reverb on the #E520HyperionProcessor from #SynthesisTechnology can take any sound to outer space, but it's especially nice when it's sweetening an already lush pad.

This sound I've come up with on the forgotten 90's ROMpler, the Yamaha W5, is gorgeous on its own...With the E520 it's otherworldly!

Take a little quiet time, still the mind, vibe out to this #ambient soundscape! I thank you for listening!"

Synthtech E520 Hyperion Processor with GUITAR | Moot Booxle Sound Demo | No Talking

Published on Jan 3, 2020 mootbooxle

"Moot Booxle demonstrates the #SynthesisTechnology #E520 processor with an electric guitar. No other effects have been used, except a stereo cabinet simulator via IK AmpliTube 3. I wanted to have a bit more typical electric guitar sound than just a DI sound.

So the signal path is Peavey Strat w/ EMG pickups ; Mono input of E520 ; ART TPS II tube preamp ; Tascam DM-4800 console ; Logic Pro X ; AmpliTube 3 ; Limiter.

Synthesis Technology E520 *prototype* // Tape style SOS loops, spectral weirdness, new FX + more!

Premiered Dec 12, 2019 DivKidVideo

Note the Kickstarter campaign ends tomorrow, Sunday, Dec 15.

"Here’s the second video with the already lovely sounding E520 big exposed prototype from Synthesis Technology. This will be a Eurorack module for it’s release next year but this is just the development prototype. In this video we explore some other FX, some updates to things we’ve already seen and bathe in not only a lovely shimmer bath … but some gorgeous tape style degradation loops that deteriorate with feedback, warble, saturation and filtering like real tape based sound on sound looping. Heck, I even broke out the Telecaster for a change. Skip around, any questions just ask, if you go back this be sure to get your ideas heard and give feedback to shape the product on Kickstarter and as always I’ll see you next time. Ba-bye.

Synthtech E520 Hyperion Processor | Poly D Meets Lush FX! | Moot Booxle Sound Demo

Published on Dec 13, 2019 mootbooxle

"Back the Synthesis Technology E520 Hyperion Stereo Effects Processor on Kickstarter before it ends Sunday! http://kck.st/356J297 .

This will be an actual Eurorack module - not the bare-bones prototype you see here! I'd been wanting to do another Poly D sound demo, but with FX, and this was the perfect opportunity.

So much more to come...and not just Behringer! I'm practically swimming in cool stuff to show you. I'm so glad you watched my video and shared your time with me! I hope you have a wonderful day!"

Update: some info on the module via https://synthtech.com:

"INTRODUCING THE E520 HYPERION, A STEREO EFFECTS PROCESSOR

Kickstarter campaign launches on Nov. 15th and the KS page will activate on Nov. 10th. Estimated shipping: late May 2020.

OVERVIEW

The E520 Hyperion is a mono/stereo in, stereo out effects module. It is 48HP wide and uses less than 300ma of +12V and less than 70ma of -12V.

Powered by a 480MHz ARM Cortex M7 CPU, the E520 has 64MB on on-board SDRAM for recording up to 6min of stereo audio at 48KHz sample rate. The LCD screen and optical encoder navigation uses the same 'shallow' menu scheme of our E352 and E370 modules, with the addition of 4 'soft keys' for selecting options without having to leave the main page.

The E520 uses a premium audio path not usually found in Eurorack. Crystal Semi CODECs, TI OPA-series op amps and WIMA film caps in the output stage are used along with low-noise, dedicated LDO voltage regulators for a clean, full soundstage. Audio conversion uses 48KHz sample rate, 24bit resolution with a line or synth level setting.

Please note this is a 'living document' and subject to modification at any time over the next 8 weeks.
