The timelessly black finish of Pērkons HD-01 matches our other instruments and visually complements the dark aesthetic that has become synonymous with Erica Synths modules and desktop instruments all over the world. In addition the limited edition side panels are not just functional pieces of decor; they are works of art that effortlessly blend natural beauty with artisanal craftsmanship. Handpicked apple tree and plum wood brings a touch of orchard elegance, infusing each panel with the warmth and character of nature's bounty. The ash and oak wood, renowned for their durability and distinct grain patterns, provide a sturdy foundation for the intricate engravings.

But what truly sets these side panels apart is the mesmerizing Lichtenburg burning method employed in their creation. This technique, named after the physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, involves applying high-voltage electricity to the wood's surface, resulting in striking patterns reminiscent of lightning strikes. The method has gained notoriety due to numerous incidents of death and severe injuries when people have attempted it at home, with at least 33 people having died between 2017 and 2022. Pērkons HD-01 engraved side panels have been hand made by Sandis Vāgners in the deep woods of Latvia. To prevent his certain death during the engraving process Erica Synths developed a special emergency power cut circuit."

"This piece came about from the Hardware Jams Facebook Group's pretty epic challenge this week, which was:

'Good night out, just got back from that your favourite music gig. You're in the kebaby drooling over that spit of Donner meat (chicken or falafel options available), contemplating if you're pissed/stupid/both enough to steal that spit of meat/falafel and run it home and a song comes on the radio that stops you. Make that song!'

I used the Ableton Push 3, some samples sourced from Loopcloud, the Erica Synths Perkons drum machine and the Roland TR8s drum machine to create this.

How to update Perkons for chromatic play

"Firmware update 1.1 for Erica Synths' Perkons has brought many improvements. The two most notable are the ability to play each voice chromatically and the ability to have the optional hits on the last bar rather than the first. Here I go through the update procedure and the config page options to enable the new features. At the end I get distracted and start faffing about with a dronescape.

This piece came about from the Hardware Jams Facebook Group's weekly challenge - which was to create the lushest-sounding pads or chords, juxtaposed against the most spiky and hellish beats you can conjure up. These beats are less than hellish, for sure 🤔 - but I tried to get the Erica Synths PERKONS rumbling hard.... The evolving pad sound is from a Mutable Instruments Braids Clone made by Blue lantern Modules. I wanted to add more pad sounds and make the pad part more sophisticated, but I ran out of inputs on the 1010 Bluebox mixer (Eurorack Version) I was using to record everything - because I already added too much before adding the pad sound - DOH! 12 Tracks runs out FAST!

(Eurorack is always teaching me patching and routing lessons for "next time", lol...)

Down in the Park [Numan cover] on Solina and Perkons

"Gary Numan's 1979 single 'Down in the Park' has always been a favorite of mine. This cover version (instrumental) has been made using only the Behringer Solina Strings and the Erica Synths Perkons drum machine. The Solina plays all the synth parts while the Perkons does drums and the sub-bass deep hits best revealed on headphones. The images are AI generated using Stable Diffusion.
It wasn't my aim to make a 1:1 copy but in the end I stayed pretty close to the original. Any time I started changing things it felt like I was insulting an old friend.

In this deep dive demo I explore the Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 . This wonderful instrument is really something to behold. It's massive, has big knobs, hands on controls, one knob per function, most accessible sequencer ever and in general just really feels like a true instrument.

Trying to make this more tutorialesque proofed to be difficult as Perkons kept dragging me into a flow state. But I think this demonstration shows you just how much fun this thing is to play with.
