UDO Super 6 Desktop with the Five12 Vector Sequencer

video upload by Nightlife Electronics

"In this two-part video document we wish to showcase the soothing and pleasant sounds of the magical UDO Super 6 Desktop Synthesizer, under control from the Five12 Vector Sequencer.

The Vector Sequencer is a perfect tool for creating evolving, syncopated and layered midi/cv melodies. It has a lot of really cool tricks that make live composition and improvisation very immediate and fun; things like conditional events, scales, algorithmic pattern generation just to name a few.

It's partner in crime in this video, the UDO Super 6 Desktop, is one of the best sounding modern era synthesizers you can put your hands on. It falls beautifully in that category of synth that oozes with inspiring sounds and fits great in any genre.

Both the Five12 Vector Sequencer and the UDO Super 6 Desktop are available at Nightlife Electronics:

New Five12 Vector Sequencer Eurorack Module at SUPERBOOTH18

You can find previous posts featuring Five12's new Vector Sequencer here.

via STROMKULT

"James Coker, owner of the company Five12, announced that his Vector sequencer will go into production soon. The module is a digital composition tool with eight tracks. Each of them features two sub-sequencers for internal modulation. An extensive set of chance-based functions, including options like random ratcheting, pitch and playback alterations plus mute options, allow you to create variations of sequences on the fly. Two new features, which James announced at Superbooth 2018, are a chord mode and a record thru function. Patterns can be organized in playlists to create songs and live sets. Thanks to two OLED displays plus a total of nine encoders, a piano-style button matrix and other control elements, operating the Vector is easy as pie. – Despite its high level of sophistication.

The Vector itself offers analog outputs for two tracks. In detail, it emits pitch, gate and velocity signals. Additionally, there are two 3.5 mm MIDI connectors and both USB A and B ports. Three bi-directional trigger sockets can be used for sync, clock and trigger functions. On top of that, there are two CV inputs, which allow you to feed external modulation signals to the sequencer. Incoming control voltages can influence various parameters. If this configuration is not enough to fully control your setup, it is time for the Five12 Jack Expander. This module adds four more analog output sets, each consisting of pitch, gate and velocity connectors. Furthermore, the Jack Expander features eight more bi-directional trigger sockets, a MIDI DIN input and output plus DIN Sync ports. You can freely assign all these connectors to the sequencer tracks.

A micro-SD card slot is installed on the back of the unit. There are auto-saving and load functions, so you’ll always have the last session at hand when you switch on your modular system. The USB A port can be used to transfer data to your computer, meaning to create a backup.

Vector and Jack Expander will be available for pre-order at SchneidersLaden soon. James said the prices will be 699 USD (Vector) and 359 USD (Jack Expander). Prices in Euro have yet to be determined. The Vector will be available in August. Its Jack Expander will follow about a month later."

Exploring the Five12 Vector Sequencer!

video by Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video resident expert Nick Bigelow takes us on a Vector Sequencer exploration. Get your spelunking gear because it's a deep dive.

The Five12 Vector Sequencer is a digital sequencer in the Eurorack modular format. It provides a flexible sequencing engine with support for 8 independent parts, 2 sub-sequencers per part for internal modulation, an extensive set of chance-based operations, and presets with a playlist function. All eight Parts are monophonic by default, but Parts 5-8 can be reformatted as 4-voice chord or drum modes.

Five12 Vector Sequencer (It's Like Having Numerology in Eurorack)

Published on Dec 13, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Based on the popular plugin Numerology, the Five12 Vector Sequencer is a unique take on Eurorack sequencing—balancing easy access to specific rhythms and melodies with complex generative behavior.

In this video, we use a small Eurorack system comprised of only an Erica Synths Bassline, Mutable Instrument Plaits, and Make Noise Mimeophon. By controlling these with the Vector Sequencer, we create everything from minimalistic grooves to interlocking melodic patterns and ratcheting rhythms.

Vector Sequencer available here: https://www.perfectcircuit.com/five12..."

Podcast 275: Jim Coker

Published on May 5, 2019 20Objects

"Back in Podcast 38 [below], we talked to Jim Coker - the developer behind Numerology and the company Five12. Well, it's been five years, and a lot has happened since then. I met up with Jim at Synthplex, and got a quick catch-up; I also realized that we needed to have another interview, because things have gotten very real for him since we last talked!

It's all about hardware, baby. In this case, that would be the Vector Sequencer: a no-holds-barred sequencer for Eurorack systems that brings much of the sequencing power of Numerology into the Eurorack world. This device provides many of my favorite features into its 3u height, so you can expect that I wanted to know how that could happen.

As always, Jim was willing to share - and to be patient as I marveled at what he pulled off. This sequencer is significant enough to occupy the center of a decent studio (much like Numerology itself), and bring the step sequencing game to a new level of awesome.

You can learn more about both Numerology and the Vector Sequencer at five12.com

Enjoy!"

And from 2017:

Podcast 038: Jim Coker

Published on Dec 6, 2017 20Objects

"As an electronic music-head, I've been using computers, DAW's, synths and other tech crap for decades now. However, one of my favorite software packages is a program that doesn't try to do everything - in fact, its creator steadfastly refuses to take one certain tasks that he doesn't feel belong in his bit of code.

That creator is Jim Coker, and the software is Numerology (found at five12.com). I started using this at version 1, and it is now up to version 3 (with 4 right around the corner). In this podcast, I take the opportunity to corner Jim, talk to him about his background, his vision of the software/hardware combo, and his view of the future.

This is another case where I've known someone for a long time, but this is the longest conversation we've ever had. What's wrong with me? I need to spend more time with these people!!!

Enjoy!"

SynthPlex 2022: Five12 Vector Updates and QV-L Function Module

video upload by sonicstate

"The Five12 Vector Sequencer has a lot of fans - Daniel Miller uses it in his live and studio setups and many more. The firmware 3.0 is approaching and we got a look at some of the features coming with James Coker. He also showed us a new module - the QV-L which is a complex multi-function generator with LFOs., Envelopes and much more besides. With four modulation busses and a ton of configuration possibilities, it packs a lot into a single module.

This will be available end of the year with more to follow early next year priced at $379

The 'Right' Sequencer | Modular Composing | Episode 02

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Your possibilities to compose on a Modular Synth are directly related to the sequencer you're using. So picking the 'right' sequencer for your work is an important task. Your biggest challenge would be to compose or arrange a full song with beats, bass, lead and maybe even chords. I thought it would be fun to use Kraftwerk's 1976 Trans-Europe Express as a 'benchmark', but it turned out a big challenge. It has a simple rhythm (no problem), a super simple bass, a lead and the characteristic 'note ladder' that jumps 5 semitones each 1/2 note. This takes 128 regular steps and sequencers ususally stop at 16, 32 or 64 (if you're lucky). Clock divisions could take care of that. But the song transposes to a different key when the 'note stairs' plays and you'll need a powerful sequencer to transpose all voices to a new key and then turn back. Ground Control and Westlicht Performer couldn't pull it off. I had zero knowledge of NerdSeq at the beginning of this video, but it turned out to be the only sequencer I know of that can do a full song. It's an incredible sequencer/tracker, but it also has a 100+ page manual.

Sequencers roughly come in three flavors: linear, cartesian and arbitrary. The most useful sequencers can do drums, strict patterns and generative parts. I've included Five12 Vector and Eloquencer in my overview, but I have no experience with them. My 'findings' in this video are biased by my own music and workflow and I double-checked the manuals of modules I don't know. It's possible I overlooked some features. I am aware Vector can do drums, but I felt you'd need a dedicated drum pattern editor to qualify as a drum sequencer.

New Five12 Eurorack Vector Sequencer - Teaser Video

Published on Jan 17, 2017 Five12 Inc.

Now this is interesting. Five12 makes Numerology, considered by many as the best software sequencer out there. I do not know if this is a full port to hardware, but coming from Five12, this is likely going to be very good. Possibly even bigger news, is that Five12 is entering the hardware market with their first eurorack module.
