Hitachi Lo-D HMS-30 Fully Polyphonic Analogue Synthesizer 1978

This appears to be the one featured in this video.

"The synth is in a good to fair state. Cosmetically the metal panels are in good shape, but the "wood" side panels have suffered a little.

The synth sounds good, and all knobs are functional. The two filter cutoff pots are a little dirty, so that's why I don't move them at all in the video. The sound is good, though there is a very very faint high pitch sound. It might sound in the video, but if you're old enough (like almost myself), you might not even hear at all."

(Hitachi) Lo-D HMS-30 Rare Analogue Synth with Manual SN 9000154C

via this auction

You can find video of one posted here.

"One of the rarest synth ever. As Internet says, only 300 was made. This one have a serial number 9000154C.

There is a full (all keys at same time) polyphony, two stage tone modificator, multilayered LFOs, 8-pattern rhythm generator, and programmable sequencer. Also, it have a stereo output, so it is possible to play with pan for some features.

Original user manual (Japanese) included.

Capacitors in power supply was replaced for prophylactic reasons, and output voltage precisely adjusted.

Pots and switches moves without any cracks or noises. The tune is fine.

Machine looks like a fully working, but I can not test all features of programmable sequencer (LEDs response correctly then I pressing buttons on it - thats all I'v figured out) because I can't read Japanese.

Cosmetically it looks great, but have few unperfections. Please see photos.

Please note:

The synthesizer is made for japanese market and work only at ~100-110v. If you living in countries, where voltage 220-240v, you need a step-down transformer."

Hitachi Lo-D HMS-30 Memory Synthesizer (1978)

Published on Jul 21, 2015 Patrick McMaster

"I've been trying to track one of these rare units down since I joined the Hitachi family in September 2013. I finally got an alert that one was available on Yahoo! Auctions Japan. I was the one and only bidder, and for ¥20,000 it was mine! The size and weight made regular shipping uneconomical, so I opted for SeaMail. That was just under two months ago, and now here it is being played for the first time!

It's a two oscillator, fully polyphonic synth independent filter cutoff modulation w/LFO (warble) and amplitude modulation w/LFO (tremolo) per oscillator. It has global pitch modulation with a third independent LFO (vibrato), resonance and cutoff frequency knobs per oscillator, limited envelope control on osc 2...nothing terribly crazy in terms of modulation, but fun and more capable of sound shaping then I expected.

The built in preset-only drum machine sounds as cheesy as you would expect for late 70s analog, but the star of the show in terms of extras is a built in sequencer. Now I only need to figure out how the heck it works...

In this video I'm running it through a Moog Minifooger Drive into a Roland keyboard amp."

Happy New Year! The Year in Synths 2013

Happy New Year Everyone!

What a busy year it has been in the world of synths.

This is going to be one doozy of a post, so bear with me. This post is a review of the year in synths for 2013. We begin with Tributes to Those We Lost This Year, followed by New Manufacturers & Makers, Older Manufacturers Added to the Site, New Gear Announcements, Top 10 Posts by Traffic,  My Standout Posts for the Year, and finally This Years' Synth Events. I did my best to keep things as short and concise as possible.

Let's begin with the hardest part of the post.

Tributes to Those We Lost This Year

RIP Bernard Parmegiani - Electronic & Acoustic Composer
Lou Reed RIP
RIP Dick Raaymakers aka Kid Baltan
RIP George Duke - DreamWeaver
RIP Ralph Dyck, Sept 28, 1941 – May 20, 2013
RIP Ray Manzarek

All missed and never to be forgotten. Take a moment to remember them.

------

New Manufacturers & Makers

Starting last January, I decided to keep a running list of every new manufacturer and maker introduced to the site during the year.  This is something I haven't done before and I thought it would be interesting to see how many there were in the year.   It's easy to focus on the big synth announcements throughout the year, but what about all the new makers and brands? I shouln't have to go considerably into the significance of new designers on the scene, so I'll just say two things regarding them.  One, the number of new makers is a direct reflection on the interest in our scene, and two, these are the creators of new gear which directly translate into new designs not previously available to us.  Think about that for a moment.  These are makers and designs that did not exist before.  They are part of our synth history.  So what is the total count of new synth designers for the year? A whopping 113. Think about that a bit. One hundred and thirteen new synth designers and brands this year alone.

Here they are (note a handful date back to 2012, but 2013 marked their momentum and availability):

Lo-d (Hitachi) Vintage Analogue Synthesizer HMS-30

via this auction

"I have never seen one of these synths before, and there is very little info on the internet about it. Seems to be a rarity. Made sometime around the start of the 80's by Lo-D, which seems to be an offshoot of Hitachi in Japan. Reasonably large and well built machine, with classic wooden panels from the vintage era.

Here's what i have observed:
it is FULLY POLYPHONIC. not 4 or 6 or 8 voice polyphonic, but 100% polyphonic. Every key produces a note.

Each voice consists of 2 layers:
a sustained wave for the body of the sound, and an enveloped wave for the dynamic attack of the sound. each of these layers has the following 8 controls:
filter cutoff, filter resonance, pan, volume, warble speed and depth, tremolo speed and depth.
('warble' is an LFO which modulates the filter cutoff.)

so, basically, you build the sound from 2 layers, which are mixed together. each layer has its own filter and modulation options, and can be panned, so you can make nice stereo by putting one part to the left and the other to the right.

There is a global LFO for vibrato on the pitch. Rate and Depth can be altered with knobs. Total pitch can also be quite significantly altered using a knob which sweeps from bass right up to very high tones.

As if that's not enough, there is also a built-in rhythm machine, which consists of various simple drum patterns and a simple analogue drum engine which makes some simple bass, kick, hihat sounds. Certainly not going to replace you

So, a quick roundup so far of what this baby contains:

5 LFO's (global pitch, plus tremolo and warble for each of the 2 layers), 2 VCF's, One VCA, and a drum machine.

For an early 80's machine, that stuff by itself is pretty cool, but it seems to have gone a fair bit further than that with a whole section of buttons for controlling and editing an inbuilt sequencer. The LED's on that section are sadly not lighting up anymore, so one can only wonder to the full capabilities of this synth. I'm guessing it would have been quite expensive with all these options. The build is also very nice. The keyboard volume seems to change at a point 2 octaves up the keyboard. I assume this is to keep the volume of bass a bit lower than the melody when playing."
