Holon - Multimodal Mobile Music
video upload by Holonic Systems
Holon.ist x Orbit Princess
video upload by Holonic Systems
"The free iPhone app Holon generates synth music in real-time on your device, adapting the sounds to your environment, speed and direction. Holon now supports Apple Watch for even more personalised interactive scores!
Sync the music with your heart rate and try the 10 different compositions included - powered by miRack!
Holon lets you perform improvised electronic music by moving spatially between different locations.
Holon uses iPhone sensors and a GIS data from the Holonic geospatial backend to generate music in real-time based on user movements and environmental context. Holon is a passive, zero-UI app that turns the physical world into an instrument, promoting immersive, embodied interaction that effectively turns audiences into performers.
- Holon also modifies the intensity of the music by reacting to places and certain objects tagged in GIS systems; parks and water features lower the intensity, while transit and retail zones increase intensity. Industrial areas increase musical tension and distortion, alerting to the possibility of danger while also providing sound masking.
- Holon synchronises the tempo of the music with your activity: BPM is calculated from speed when in a vehicle, from step rate when walking, from heart rate if stationary and wearing an Apple Watch.
- For even further musical embodiment, Apple AirPods 3/Pro/Max can be used as head tracking controllers that add fills and modulation to the music. Set them to transparency mode for improved situational awareness and natural acoustic blending.
- For Holon’s GPS features to work correctly, you'll need to be outdoors, in one of the over 1000 supported regions. See coverage and request yours at www.holonic.systems/holon
Holon is a free demo of the Holonic platform for musical mobility. It is based on theories of affective design, physical computing, human geography, music psychology and urban musicology. Holon is available at the Apple AppStore"
