VGM #101: Die Anywhere Else (Night in the Woods) Ft. Curious Quail

Published on Mar 29, 2017 Ace Waters

"I had to make a last minute cover this week because my bandmates ended up needing more time for the new IITT track. I reached out on twitter, and someone recommended that I tap into the 'Night in the Woods' OST. I immediately went to a video of Die Anywhere Else and came up with an idea for an arrangement. I went back on twitter and my buddy Mike (Curious Quail) had commented about wanting to do another collab with me on Die Anywhere Else. I told him the timeline, and he made it work, and I am so happy he did because man did those chiptunes really pull the song together. I also wanted some elements of the post-rock shimmer guitar in there, and while working on ideas on my electric, I thought...'Man, Kyle hasn't been on a track in a while, this would be perfect for him!' and he also made some time and put together a great last minute guitar track. Point being, everyone involved in this track is awesome, and I am really happy that we ended up needing to do this song, because it became one of my new favorite VGMs that I have done. Enjoy!"

JAde Wii Takes the New Limited Edition Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 in Black for a Spin

JAde Wii x Erica Synths Perkons HD-01 Drum Machine, First Encounter šŸ‘¾ video upload by JAde Wii - https://www.jadewii.com/

via Erica Synths

"Introducing a truly unique and exquisite limited edition Pērkons HD-01 with an all-new sleek black finish and side panels crafted from handpicked wood and meticulously engraved using the mesmerizing Lichtenburg burning method.

The timelessly black finish of Pērkons HD-01 matches our other instruments and visually complements the dark aesthetic that has become synonymous with Erica Synths modules and desktop instruments all over the world. In addition the limited edition side panels are not just functional pieces of decor; they are works of art that effortlessly blend natural beauty with artisanal craftsmanship. Handpicked apple tree and plum wood brings a touch of orchard elegance, infusing each panel with the warmth and character of nature's bounty. The ash and oak wood, renowned for their durability and distinct grain patterns, provide a sturdy foundation for the intricate engravings.

But what truly sets these side panels apart is the mesmerizing Lichtenburg burning method employed in their creation. This technique, named after the physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, involves applying high-voltage electricity to the wood's surface, resulting in striking patterns reminiscent of lightning strikes. The method has gained notoriety due to numerous incidents of death and severe injuries when people have attempted it at home, with at least 33 people having died between 2017 and 2022. Pērkons HD-01 engraved side panels have been hand made by Sandis Vāgners in the deep woods of Latvia. To prevent his certain death during the engraving process Erica Synths developed a special emergency power cut circuit."

ambient folly - looping improvisation at Racton Ruin on the South Downs with Microkorg XL and RC500

video upload by drone-in-the-woods

"My first attempt at producing an ambient track by only looping my newly acquired Korg Microkorg XL. I'm still discovering cool sounds and digging deeper into editing but am already confident I've made the right switch from the Gaia.
The bass sound I used in this track is just mahoosively subby and something in the chain was distorting here and there but I've left those bits in to retain the live one-take feel of the video. Some of the arpeggio timing is a bit wobbly too, but I've since discovered key sync and switched it on :)
I'm surprised to find no hold function on the Microkorg and the lack of a MIDI THRU is pretty frustrating. Nonetheless it is a fantastically feature-rich and incredibly portable instrument.

Monome Norns Arcologies In the Woods

video by Perplex On

"Please enjoy this little ambient jam in the woods. I'm using a custom #Nornsshield loaded with #Arcologies script and two #Launchpadmini as a poor-man's Grid in combination with #midigrid library. The background pads were done by routing the raw sound form Arcologies through #BleassGranulizer and #Velvetmachine on an iPad and then loaded this recording into Norns' tape to play in the background."

DreamsOfWires - Korg Volca Keys 'In the woods'

Published on Mar 31, 2017 DreamsOfWires

"I originally composed this track in late 2015, and recorded it on the beach at the same time as my Volca beach video, but the recording wasn't clear enough. Anyway, I fancied a walk in the woods, so I took the Volca and my camera. I thought there was something sinister about the place, like a scene from a budget horror flick, so it seemed fitting to record something less than pretty.

Recorded into AudioShare on an iPhone using a Line6 Sonic Port. The Volca's delay was used, and Virsyn AudioReverb added later.

No more technical questions please."

Under the Winter Sun (xmas hedge-hop mix) - ambient-electro synths in the forest with SH32 and MC101

video upload by drone-in-the-woods

"Although the SH32 is pretty power hungry, drawing 1A, a usb power pack with 9V converter handled it fine. Not so sure about the sync, gonna need to experiment some more.
I was lucky to fit this jam in on a sunny afternoon just before I caught the xmas lurgy!

Yamaha CS-60: "The Beast Must Die" by Raymond Castile

Published on Jan 8, 2017 raycastile

"An eerie John Carpenter-inspired piece. The CS-60 is not the star this time. It plays a supporting role backing up the Yamaha Reface CP on the main melody. A more flamboyant use of the CS-60 are the jarring stingers that punctuate the piece. I haven't experimented much with the CS-60's noise generator, but it is capable of some powerful effects.

This piece has nothing to do with the Peter Cushing movie, 'The Beast Must Die.' I just thought it made a good title. I imagined something supernatural going on, probably in the woods, maybe witches meeting for a sabbath. But that seemed too passive. I thought the music sounded more urgent and dire, like a hunt, maybe the hunter becoming the hunted, tracking down some creature, maybe a werewolf. Maybe the stingers indicate the werewolf is picking off members of the hunting party. Maybe witches are involved somehow. Who knows.

The piece also has nothing to do with 'Pickman's Model,' even though I used the Night Gallery painting from that episode. I just thought it captured the mood of the piece."

ambient one-synth drone jam with SH-32 in an early 12th century Norman church at dusk - creepy vibe!

video upload by drone-in-the-woods

"After setting up in my forest studio to jam some ambient synth loops, it started to rain pretty hard so I had to pack up with haste. I decided to try a new spot that I had in mind - a 900 year old church in a field in a tiny village called Upwaltham, situated in the South Downs national park.

I had an old synth with me that I've only just realised I could run on battery power, however, I forgot both my lithium batteries having put them on charge earlier! So I had to run it off of 6AA batteries I had with me for the looper and with the synth drawing a whole 1A, it only lasted for about 20 mins before powering off.

By The Edge Of A Pool

"1977 at EMSA in Florence, MA using the large EMS Vocoder sold to Stevie Wonder, some words I wrote (February 24, 1975), three MiniMoogs, a Beyer microphone, 2 Revox half-track machines, and a toilet.

By the edge of a pool,
Deep in a woods
I watch myself watching
Eyes that see back.

A nose framed by skin
Wrapped round bones
That shatter a cleavage
Shaped by waves

I touch my own fingers
Wet, warm, and dry
They pass through each other
And then return

I follow my thinking
Always behind,
Thoughts follow all circles
Folding under

Fling prayers for my soul
Upward beyond
I long for the reward
that will be mine

A pike bursts the liquid
Smooth, sleek, and cold,
swallows a water bug
Then sinks below."

Update: the story behind the track:

"By The Edge of a Pool recorded by me in 1977 at EMSA in Florence, MA using the large EMS Vocoder 5000 sold to Stevie Wonder. Words were written on 2/24/1975 shortly before I graduated NYU. Sound source was 3 tracks of MiniMoog and some running water. Prof. Everett Hafner, who owned EMSA, had no idea who Stevie was but insisted he speak with him on the phone prior to ordering from London & personally delivering to LA. During the call Everett kept calling him "Mr. Wonder" and finally asked which of the two available colour schemes he preferred: off-white or chocolate-brown. Dennis and I could hear Stevie erupt in laughter over the phone and loudly proclaim, "chocolate-brown, Man; chocolate-brown!". I can't recall anyone else ever calling Everett 'man'."

Synclavier Lap Synth and Possible Soft Synth

Thought this shot was kind of funny. The Synclavier isn't exactly the sort of synth I think about taking with me out to play on my lap in the woods. I guess if someone is bold enough to bring that out along with the computer, there could be a power generator sitting just outside that shot.

Via Failed Muso where you can find more shots. As for a soft synth, he also found this intersting blurb on the Synclavier site:

"I am researching the possibility of creating a Synclavier® "plug-in" for several hardware platforms that would recreate the "Synclavier® Sound" by accurately modeling the actual operation of the original Synclavier® hardware. I am convinced that, by utilizing 96/192 Khz 24-bit technology, such a plug-in could faithfully reproduce the sound of a variable sampling rate digital audio system. This project will take between 12 and 24 months."

Audio Oscillators with the LZX Visionary

YouTube Uploaded by lzxindustries on May 4, 2011

"This (long) tutorial shows how you can use some audio eurorack oscillators to create and modify video signals for use with an LZX Visionary system. Modules used include the WMD Gamma Wave Source, Wiard Oscillator, MakeNoise QMMG, and the Toppobrillo TWF.
Sorry about the poor production and editing!

Two notes: Some of the short video clips in the beginning used an LZX TVFKG and video mixer as well as the modules in this demo.
The output of the Wiard Oscillator always appears as a pulse wave because the input to the VBM was clipping. It is actually possible to get the full variety of waveforms when using the Voltage Interface I, or by more carefully setting the VBM controls.

Tutorial created by Johnny Woods, May 2011."

12 synths, drum machines, FX & innovations you need to know from Superbooth 2025

video upload by MusicRadar Tech

"For a few years now, Berlin’s Superbooth show has been a focal point for music technology gear announcements, but the 2025 iteration took this to another level. The sheer volume and variety of new music making gear on display in and around the FEZ event space was beyond anything we’ve seen in previous years.

MusicRadar was on the ground to test everything we could get our hands on. As the show drew to a close Managing Editor Si Truss, Reviews Editor Simon Arblaster and Tech Channel Editor Matt Mullen found a quiet corner in the woods to sit down for a roundtable (sans table) discussion about their highlights from the 2025 Superbooth show floor."
