How to Control modular synths with ChatGPT

video upload by

"Will ChatGPT make us lazier musicians, or can it allow us to master new instruments and even new professions without investing in years of study?
I continue my affair with ChatGPT and check if I can use it to program audio devices and create musical instruments despite my minimal knowledge of programming.
Watch the video, but hold on tight to your jaws, because they might drop!

Color Sensor Sequencer - 1st Test

video by Izhar Ashdot Sound & Vision

"Sensors are such sensitive creatures. They smell, see, hear, feel movement, recognize direction and even differentiate between colors! I chose the TCS-230 color sensor (1.50$ on eBay) to try and create sounds with it and control the synthesizer using color. Preliminary results are promising, here is a bass sequence created in response to a video of alternating colors, receiving external clock from the modular system."

The All-Dancing Accelero-Gyro DIY Triple CV Controller

video by Izhar Ashdot Sound & Vision

"As part of my fascination with Sensors, I built an Accelerometer-Gyroscope based controller for modular synths that outputs 3 CV streams to control any parameter in your synth setup.

In this video I'm controlling the Pitch of an oscillator with the Pitch axis, the cutoff frequency of a filter with the Roll axis, and the resonance of the same filter with the Yaw axis.

I 3D printed an enclosure for the GY-521and I wear it like a watch using 2 velcro cable ties."

DIY State of things: A Brief Tour of Izhar Ashdot's Modular Rig

Published on Jun 24, 2019 Izhar Ashdot Sound & Vision

"A new module I finished building is a good opportunity to show how my DIY modular modules work together with the commercial Eurorack modules and to demonstrate to those who don't use modular how a typical 'Patch' looks and sounds. I recommend using headphones or good stereo speakers.

1. White Noise! Drums & Percussion from a cheap Ebay module.

"White Noise is a basic ingredient in the creation of electronic musical instruments, especially drums and percussion.

In my Ebay hikes, I found this small and dirt cheap (1.30$) kit that makes healthy white noise and I headed on to make some sounds with it.

Connect the Vactrol in place of resistors R4 or R5, for different effects.
For Modular output level, replace resistor R3 with a value of 8-10K ohms.

Using a self built musical instrument is so much fun!

3. A DIY Clock Divider Groove
You can program drums without a sequencer!
A clock divider is a module which creates various divisions of an input clock, the rhythmic base of the system.
I built a module using two cute chips:
The CD4040 divides the clock in multiple of 2: 2, 4 ,8 ,16 ,32 ,64 , 128 etc.
The CD4022 is a simple counter. By deciding how far it counts, we can create more interesting divisions, like 3, 5, 6, 7 etc.
Each division triggers a different drum module, which creates a lovely automatic rhythm.

5. Adding a Bluetooth input to the Studio Console
This happens all the time!
I meet a musician in my studio and he wants to play me a demo from his phone.
I start looking for a cable to connect to the patchbay, only to realize that it's a new iPhone with no analog audio connector.
A friend who builds studio monitor panels told me he started incorporating a Bluetooth input so I decided to add one to my Control 24 console.
I strolled down to Ebay and found a BT 4.0 module, built a steady power supply and connected it to the patchbay instead of the defunct CD player.
It's compressed audio, but hey, it gets the idea across!

"This is a DIY Eurorack module (work in progress) using two CMOS chips, creating lovely Pseudo-Random sequences
A CD4040 clock divider's outputs feed the four binary inputs of a CD4028 BCD to Decimal converting chip, creating pseudo-random sequences, depending on different CD4040 outputs feeding different CD4028 BCD inputs.
input-output patching is done with a mini patchbay on the module.

Participating Eurorack modules: Ladik QUantizer, Tiptop Z3000 VCO, Z2040 Filter, DIY Envelope, DIY 606 Kick, Omsonic Pixeldust HH."

Shake it like a servo motor!

Published on Nov 21, 2018 יזהר אשדות Izhar Ashdot

"Shake it like a servo motor!
I’ve been playing with the idea of controlling Percussion instruments with servo motors as part of my modular setup.
I failed to build my own voltage to PWM circuit but finally found on EBay a cheap three channel voltage-to-PWM board, designed for RC models.
I built a small module around it.
I bought a few kinds of servo motors to test which would work best. Even the cheaper ones had enough torque to shake a tambourine and a LP shaker.
A strong vise was necessary to keep the instruments from spinning and flying across the room.
This video is a proof of concept. I hope soon to integrate this module into my music making setup."

A DIY Clock Divider Groove

A DIY Clock Divider Groove from Izhar Ashdot on Vimeo.

"You can program drums without a sequencer or drum machine!

A Clock Divider is a module that creates various divisions of the basic clock which is the beating heart of a modular synth system.

My DIY Clock Divider is made from two cute little chips: The CD4040 which divides an incoming clock by 2,4,8,16,32,64,128 etc. and the CD4022 which counts up to 8 and can be reseted after counting any number of steps, thus creating interesting divisions of 3,5,6,7.

Each division is sent to a different drum module, altogether making a cool automatic groove."

Agitato - A Modular Etude 11.12.1

Published on Dec 12, 2017 Izhar Ashdot

"Agitato - A Modular Etude by Izhar Ashdot

Making music on a Modular Synthesizer teaches me how to lose some of my self criticism.
When I write songs in the "conventional" way, with a guitar or piano, I tend to be self judgmental and critical over the result, but when I work with the Modular system, I easily get into a state of "flow", where I disconnect from the surroundings and move into a meditative state of creativity.
I created dozens of pieces of music this way, most of them remain on the proverbial cutting room floor, but some of them are good enough to be developed into a complete piece of music.
Here's a piece I created in a two hour session yesterday and edited the video last night.
Will I continue developing it or will it gather dust in my digital storage area? Only time will tell.
Headphones or speakers recommended, preferably loud.
