Rare Jen DT 73 Analog Electric Piano

"This is a the rarest keyboard I ever found. I didn't find any information or picture of it (yes even on Matrixsynth :-). [Funny!]

I estimate it was produced in the early 80s along with the also quite rare Jen SYNX 508 synthetizer and thus is probably one of the very last instrument ever released by JEN. To those wondering it is not a rebadged or revised JEN PIANO 73. I owned one and the circuits are totally different. (pictures available if interested). Noticeably this one has a splitable velocity sensitive keyboard. You can chose between 3 pianos sound that you can assign and layer on the left and right part of the keyboard.

Piano 1 is a very squarish piano sound, kind of EP sound. Piano 2 is the one closest to an accoustic piano sound and Piano 3 is the mandatory harspichord kind of sound. You get a nice built in phaser with depth and speed controls, along with a left/right balance mix, master volume (that controls both the builtin speakers and headphone out but not the external amp out. Engaging a jack in the headphone socket mutes the speakers) and the touch sensitivity control.

This is the real nice feature of the keyboard. I thought the velocity response would be a joke but I was surprised how well it behaves. Not as good as a decent midi keyboard of course but better than most of the mini midi keyboard (like Korg Nano etc) and way way better than the Siel Opera 6 for instance if you know what I mean. Pre midi keyboard with velocity response are usually almost useless IMO. This is the first I found that is playable (far from perfect though).

Soundwise it's not the best electric (well electronic) piano in its genre. Sounds thinner than the ones from the 70s (crumar compac piano, multiman S, Farfisa Soundmaker etc). But with layering, splitting, velocity and phaser you can get some original sounds. I will try to make an audio demo, if not a video one. Condition is quite good considering its age and the overall build quality of italian keyboards from that area. There is a bump on the back of the case where the jack sits but it's barely noticeable. Underneath the keyboard the fake wood covering has started to pull off on both side but it doesn't seem to extend (it's where the original stand is normally screwed in)."

VSMI - Vintage Synths Made in Italy Live Stream 1/1/22

video upload by VSMI - Vintage Synths Made in Italy

Anyone ID the synth to the top left of the Cordovox Moog White Elephant?

Update: looks like it's a Welson "Symphony" as seen at the one minute mark in The Forgotten Synthesizers Of Marche Region.

Not sure what he's playing on the shelf with the blue panels. Thought it might be a Siel Opera 6, but the spacing is wrong.

Update via gridsleep in the comments: "Blue synth is a Jen Synx 508, featured in the site previously."

Incredibly Rare Jen Synx 508 Polyphonic Analogue Synth Prototype

Published on Apr 10, 2016 duoblank

Update: found the videos above and according to Mal in the comments, these may not be so rare after all. I guess it depends on how many are left. The videos above are the only ones I found on YouTube and out of well over 144,000 posts to date on the site, this is only the 3rd post to reference the Synx 508, so if they are out there, they aren't getting much exposure.

Playlist:
Jen Synx 508 - Trying out presets
Jen Synx 508 - Using the Sequencer
Jen Synx 508 - Noodling around with this synth from 1983 - "Managed to get hold of a unit # 1129 (possibly #29) which was one of a handful imported in Malta by Nani of Valletta. The Jen Synx 508 was a 5 voice polyphonic synthesizer from Italy which could be expanded to 8 voice. Soon after being released the company went bust... judging from its architecture this unit was still in prototype phase!! Will be also uploading a demo of its sequencer. No MIDI is available however the onboard sequencer can be clocked to an external source."

And via Mal in the comments: "Not that rare and also it did make it to production. I once owned 2 of these, serial number #40 and #151. Number 40 was clearly a work in progress as each board had many additional wires attached on both sides of the PCB but by #151, the voice cards had been retraced and all external wires were gone. Thin, weedy sounding synth... more like a string machine with extras then a full synth. Noises chorus, nowhere near the quality of the Polysix. Heavy, bulky casing... end cheeks are compressed cardboard coated in thick paint and chip real easily. Worth more for the myriad of Curtis chips, each voice card comes with a CEM 3310 ADSR Envelope, a CEM3320 24db/Oct, 4 pole, Multipass filter and a CEM 3360 Dual VCA."

Unfortunately not the best pics, but you definitely do not see these often. There has only been two previous posts on the Synx 508 here on MATRIXSYNTH.

via the listing: "CHECK OUT MY OTHER RARE KIT LISTED NOW & MORE TO COME ! It's a very rare synth indeed ! VCOs ! Very similar to the mighty korg poly six in architecture & sound but this is a prototype & was NOT commercially available. The synth has memories a sequencer but no midi see pictures for more detail . Some of the legend has worn off as like I say it is a prototype & was not commercially finished the synth is listed as not working but that is just one key ! However it does need a good service to bring it upto scratch..."

Synthmaster

Trip. When I had severe GAS (Gear Aquisition Syndrome), I used to have these dreams where I'd walk into a pawn shop and see all these bizarre and obscure synths. Sometimes they were rare models of Oberheims and Rolands, etc, but usually they were obscure synths from manufacturers I've never seen before. Right before I was waking from the dream, I'd think if I only grab one I might be able to take it to the other side. : ) If you ever had dreams like this you probably know what I'm talking about.

Well, when I saw the Synthmaster post on sequencer.de, I had that same feeling, like I just walked into a pawn shop of obscure synths in dream land. There are a ton of bizarre and obscure synths I've never seen or heard of before. Looks like he brought them over from the other side. Click here for more.
