"The SunSyn features 2 analog oscillators (VCO's) per voice. The waveforms include sawtooth, square and pulse with pulsewidth-modulation. But in addition to these are the new Ramp Controlled Oscillators (RCO's). The RCOs follow the VCO characteristics like modulation, sync, tuning and frequency alterations. The RCO's use digital sounds which come from 4 wavesets, each with 256 waveforms each. In effect, these digital sounds get an analog treatment for nicer, warmer and fatter tones. There are 4 RCO's per voice and wavesets can be added via PCMCIA-card.

The filter section is also a true analog design but with very modern features. It is a 4-pole filter but fully configurable with independent high pass and low pass features available. Create filters that range from the sounds of a Minimoog, to the squelchy 303. Filter settings can be stored in one of two scene memories and real-time Morphing between scenes can be accomplished.

As for modulation, JoMoX has devised a clever Routing System for the SunSyn, turning it into an 8-voice modular! It is used to virtually patch between various modules or parameters. There are up to 4 Routing Elements per voice with 4,096 possible combinations per Routing Element. Modulation paths are configured using the front panel display screens. This modular approach to signal routing is a feature usually found only on the huge, expensive classic Modular synths by ARP, E-mu, Moog and Buchla. Unlike those, however, the SunSyn features complete patch memory (350 patches and 150 multi-patches) and multitimbral MIDI implementation. Most parameters can be controlled by MIDI, and controller/editor templates for most sequencers will be, or already are available. As for output, there are stereo outs, 8 freely routable individual outs and a stereo input to run external audio through the Routing system."

"This synth is in mint condition and comes with the original manual and box. There are no issues with this synth and it works like new. The panel version is 1.1 and the OS is Version 2.02. This is a custom color combination!

This is a true analog 8 voice synthesizer with 2 analog oscillators per voice AND two Ramp Controlled Generators that work a lot like wavetable generators / samplers. This synth features a fully configurable analog filter and you can get just about anything out of it from Minimoog to 303 style sounds. This synth features analog envelopes too! The routing system interface is very robust and is reminiscent of an Oberheim Xpander. The robust routing system allows a massive amount of unique combinations! Yes, it's got multitimbral features, multipatching, advanced MIDI features, etc."

The Best of Both Worlds

A feat of instrument design, the SunSyn is a fantastically complex-in-all-the-right-places labor of love from German synthmaker JoMoX. Released in 1999, it can be considered in simple terms as an 8-voice polyphonic analog/digital hybrid, or in a more adventurous way as 8 discrete modular mono synths. Each voice is outfitted with 2 true analog oscillators capable of saw, square, or pulse with PWM, and 2 guided digital oscillators with hundreds of waveforms and custom sample support.

Shape-Shifter

The filter section is equally impressive, with a morphable 4-pole true analog filter with discrete control over each pole's cutoff frequency. But maybe the most groundbreaking aspect is the modulation matrix. In spirit it's much closer to that of larger modular analog systems, allowing 4096 possible routings per element, 4 elements per voice, all done in the analog domain. But unlike fully analog systems the modulation routings here can be quickly made through an interactive matrix and saved in patch memory for instant recall.

Resurrecting a Sun

Working with such a complicated instrument has its challenges, especially given its age and limited production. Many parts for the SunSyn are extremely rare and almost impossible to source. In our case, to complete the servicing and refurbishment our tech had to purge parts from a second unit. An expensive and somewhat painful process but worth it in the end, as our sound designers headed off to work on a fully-restored and perfectly calibrated instrument with factory-spec parts.

Deep Sound Design

Sound design possibilities on the SunSyn are nearly endless, and the results of our process with it are evident. From massive, rich, and evolving polysynth sounds created in multi-mode, to devastating and aggressive monosynth sounds utilizing modulations of both analog oscillators, the digital RCOs, and filter morphing. We designed and recorded hundreds of multisampled soundsets, ending with a curated selection of 420 layers, delivering what we think represent the most unique, charactered, and sometimes epic, sounds possible on this machine.

Bass, Bells, Brass, FX, Keys, Leads, Native Sequences, Organ, Pads, Percussive, Plucks, Polysynth, Strings, Sweeps, Voices, Waveform Analog, Waveform Digital, over 450 all-new + custom designed presets are available, built from a library of 30,660 authentic hardware samples. All presets are fully-editable, meaning you can deeply customize them or even create your own. And the dual-layer architecture of PX SunBox allows you to easily create incredible layered tones from any combination of the included sounds.

This is one of those "synths that got away" from me. I never picked one up but I did get a chance to play with one once. The RCOs are amazing. I wish I could afford one... Another synth that "got away" is the L.L. Electronics Rozzbox. I was always tempted to pick one up but never did.

Check out additional Mungo State Zero Synthesizer demos in previous posts here. It was initially priced at $12,000, then $8900. I always thought this, and an Ekdahl Polygamist would make for an interesting combo. Throw in a Jomox Sunsyn for good measure. Maybe a Synton Syrinx, and OSCar [what's this?] to boot. Funny how certain synths remind you of others that remind you yet of others... Down the synth rabbit hole. This site is the ultimate synth rabbit hole. Whatever happened to that new Syrinx?

"For sale is one of the rarest and most incredible sounding modern polyphonic synthesizers made, a legendary Jomox Sunsyn. Approximately only 200 were ever made and they only show up for sale a couple times of year. This unit in particular is in near mint shape and fully functional. Hardly any signs of use. It is fully functional and sounds incredible, 4-pole filter, RCOs, modulation matrix, easy to use knob-per-function interface, and huge massive unique sound. Nothing else sounds quite like a Sunsyn. Includes original manual and original box (which you almost never see with these, so makes a great collector item). You aren't likely to find another Sunsyn anytime soon in this kind of condition, don't pass this chance up!"

"This is a chance to buy an extremely rare, highly collectable Jomox Sunsyn in nearly new condition. This synth, bought directly from Jomox has been in a smoke free recording studio and has rarely been used. It's a truly amazing synth with an incredibly full and powerful sound which didn't fit into the style of music I was eventually making so has spent much of its time stored in its original box. I'm loathe to give this up but accept it's time to let go of this fabulous machine so another owner can put this to better use.

Only around 200 of these synths were ever made and very rarely come up for sale.
