Rare Kurzweil VA1 Demo

Kurzweil VA1 Quick Demo 1 by WeiserSound

Demo of the suepr rare Kurzweil VA1 that enver made it into production. Apparently the engine made it's way into the PC3X.

"I finally dusted off my VA1 and banged out a very quick/dirty demo with 9 tracks, one take each, no quantization, plus a cheesy drum track. The display closeup shows choices for oscillators, filters, "deform" (an extra block of shapers and distortions), "processors" (sub oscillators, ring mod, etc in the Osc section), modulation sources and FX (not implemented).

There's a tiny bit of reverb con everything, and a small amount of Laserverb on two of the leads, both coming from a KSP8. Most of the better DSP items survived and now live inside of the current Kurz boards like PC4, Forte and SP6. Note - many of the DSP items were experimental or iterations, never meant to see the light of day.

This is one of ten prototype units that were made, and one of the few that had the cooler paint job.

For music choice, I went with The Traitor, from Herbie Hancock's Manchild album, an old fav!"

You can find a handful of posts featuring the Kurzweil VA1 here.

Kurzweil- It all started with Ray (The Kurzweil Music Story)

YouTube Uploaded by KurzweilUSA on Jan 14, 2012

"The story of Stevie Wonder's technical challenge to Ray Kurzweil that ultimately motivates the inception of Kurzweil Music Systems."

You'll spot the VA1 at :45. It was a knob laden virtual analog synth. The hardware never made it to release, but the engine did.

PC3 Sneak Preview VA1

YouTube via Kurzweilmusicsystems. Sent my way via Gord.

"A little a taste of those VA1 oscillators... The first sound uses 32 detuned saw layers!"
For more background on the VA1 see this post. Originally the Kurzweil VA1 was going to be a flagship knob laden virtual analog monster. It is now a plug-in board for the new PC3.

Kurzweil VA-1 Finally Arrives... in the PC3X

Anyone remember the Kurzweil VA-1? Well, it looks like it is finally here, but instead of the knob laden stand alone synth, it is an upgrade for the Kurzweil PC3X.

"In another huge development, we've resurrected the ** VA-1 Virtual Analog Synthesizer, having built it's synthesis engine right into the new system. Hear the VA-1's power-shaped, anti-aliasing oscillators combined with a newer, larger set of V.A.S.T. filters and non-linear processors and you'll understand why the internet is buzzing about this feature."

"** VA1 Inside: anti-aliasing, power-shaped oscillators and DSP processing from Kurzweil's VA1 prototype synth, capable of delivering authentic analog emulations as well as incredibly complex new sounds. (** VA-1 Synthesis Engine - included FREE for a limited time! A $599.00 value - offer ends 12/31/07.)"

Kurzweil VA1 Resurrected?

I posted earlier on the Kurzweil VA1. Well rumor on Sonic State's the gas station has it that the real reason the VA1 dissapeared was due to red tape around patents, which have now been lifted, and... VA1 development has been ressurected. Urban Legend or truth? Who knows, but my fingers are crossed. : )

2004 Kurzweil VA1 Musikmesse Video Demos

Published on Nov 16, 2015 matrixsynth

"A collection of short demos of the Kurzweil VA1 at the 2004 Musikmesse. The synthesizer never made it into production. The engine instead made it into the PC3X."

Original post from 2005:

The synth that wasn't. It was shown by Kurzweil at either NAMM or the Musikmesse. I forget which. Check out the display. It was a working model and people at the show heard it. The thought at the time was that it needed some polishing and the MSRP was going to be a bit pricey, but people were excited. We haven't heard from Kurweil since as far as I Know.

Update: Thought the following in the comments below was worth putting up in the main post. Thanks Mike. I agree that the competition combined with price at the time is what probably shelved it. It's too bad as it looked like it had a bit of potential. I wonder what the inside word at Kurzweil was; what would the engineers and the team working on this have to say. It's an amazing bit of synth history nonetheless.

"I saw and played the prototype on the 2004 Musikmesse in Frankfurt. It was still in Beta as many features were not working, but it sounded ok, though not spectacular as far as i remember.

Maybe they discontinued it, regarding the competetive market of Va's these days.

However, it's a shame that a manufacturer like Kurzweil seems not to be able to release "their statement" of a 21th century synth. Especially considering the undoubtable genius of Mr. Ray Kurzweil. Maybe it just get's overhauled and will find it's way to the market at one point. But guys, you have to throw something more in there to catch interest. The usual 2 OSC, 2Env one DCF isn't enough these days...

Cheers,

Mike"
