Quick Jam: IO Instruments Eurorack Modules

Perfect Circuit

"IO Instruments has some interesting eurorack modules out and some more on the way. We put together this small system with a few of their modules including the Himalia which is a sound source with 5 generators including filtered analog noise, digital noise, a square wave oscillator, sampler with lots of built in drum sounds and a chord generator. IO also has basic modules like the Themisto VCO, Euporie VCF, Pashiphae ring mod, Sinope VCA and Sponde mixer that add clever and useful extra features. All of the IO modules also have colorful knobs and a halftone paint job that makes them look great together.

We added in a Noise Engineering BIA for the kick, Intellijel Quadrax for envelopes and a Malekko Quad VCA for mixing and extra VCAs. Everything is sequenced with the Arturia Keystep Pro.

Quick Tip: Kick Drum Eurorack Modular Synthesizer Patch Tutorial

Published on Feb 12, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Here is a quick tip on how to make a kick drum with a eurorack modular synthesizer.

You will need:
- a trigger source (clock or sequencer)
- two envelope generators (snappy exponential ones)
- a VCO (voltage controlled oscillator)
- a VCA (voltage controlled amplifier)

The patch:
- trigger source to trigger input of both envelope generators
- envelope generator 1 output to VCA CV control
- envelope generator 2 output to VCO 1v/oct input
- VCO audio out to VCA audio input
- audio output of VCA is your kick drum

To start set the VCO pitch very low, even subsonic, use sine or triangle waves for mellow kicks and saws or squares for distorted sounding gabber kicks.

Tweak your envelopes to get countless variations of kick drums. Use more exponential envelopes for punchier drums, or add a little bit of attack to the VCA envelope to mellow out the attack of the drum. Attenuate the amount of the pitch envelope to go from lazer beam drum to a droning drum. Try a fast pitch envelope and a slow amplitude envelope for a long 808 style kick.

MALEKKO QUAD LFO - MAIN FEATURES

Published on Sep 28, 2018 Malekko HeavyIndustry

"An LFO, or low frequency oscillator, sends control voltage out in the shape of a waveform. The Quad LFO available shapes include sine, ramp, saw, triangle and pulse and moves through these shapes using the SHAPE slider. You can send these 4 distinct LFOs directly out or to other modules for frequency modulation, VCA control, filter control, etc.

What makes this Quad LFO module different is that it also includes a 16 step automation sequencer for each channel, as well as autosave or expanded preset functions when used in conjunction with Varigate 4+ and Varigate 8+.

To create a sequence of automation for an LFO, select a channel and then hold the RECORD button and move the sliders for Frequency, Phase, Shape, Distort and Level and those slider movements will play back automatically as the Quad LFO cycles through the sequence. This sequencing feature allows for a multitude of dynamic possibilities for live performance and recording.

Set each LFO to trigger via one of the 4 individual gate inputs, or set channels 2 through 4 to follow channel 1 for quadrature and phase modulation. Change the direction of each channel of sequenced automation to Forward, Reverse, Pendulum or Random. Switch the playback speed and style between Fast, Slow or Tempo Sync. There are also inputs for both Clock and Reset.

Features include:

-4 LFO generators, each with it’s own individual output
-SINE, RAMP, TRIANGLE, SAW and PULSE
-Distortion types: FOLD, BIT CRUSH, NOISE
-16 steps of automation recording for LFO settings per channel (& Clear Automation function)
-Set each LFO to follow or trigger via one of the 4 gate inputs
-Forward, Reverse, Pendulum and Random switch for sequenced automation direction.
-Autosave stand-alone or save up to 16 presets with Varigate 4+ and 100 with Varigate 8+
-Switch between Fast, Slow or Tempo Sync per LFO
-Clock in
-Reset in

XOR NerdSeq DAY 1 Modular Synth Jam Live Recording

Published on Sep 5, 2018 SonicVoltage

Website: https://sonicvoltage.com

"My first day/track with the XOR Electronics NerdSeq Sequencer. Eurorack Modular CV Gate Sequencer. Patch Description in the Video.

A Modular Synth Jam - Best way to learn a new sequencer is to write tracks while discovering its features. This gives me a good idea of how quick the NerdSeq is to learn and how quickly I can master the user interface.

The XOR NerdSeq is actually a bit more than a 6 Traks sequencer.
- Six tracks of CV+Trigger+Mod (1 Trigger and 2 CVs per track)
- Plus Tracks 7 and 8 dedicated to sequence samples. Actually track 7 and 8 each has two sequencing tracks, this means you can sequence/play 4 samples at the time. So it sort of is a 10 Track sequencer although each set of dual sample tracks is mixed into one output. Output 7 and 8

This is only my first experiment with the XOR NerdSeq, expect a full in depth review from me ASAP, probably over a few videos so we can cover all its features in some detail.

Patch descirption for each voice used in this live track is in the video.
The drum samples are short samples that come preloaded in the SD Card. So all percussive sounds are NerdSeq Card samples, played and sequenced through the NerdSeq.

Erica Synths Black Eurorack Modular Demo

Published on Jul 14, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"For this patch, the main sound source is the Black Wavetable VCO, from Erica Synths, with the Main out and the Suboctave out patched into the Black Crossfader. The out of the crossfader is then patched into the Black Polivoks filter and then into the Black VCA. A little bit of delay is added from the Alright Devices Chronoblob. The sequencer being used is the Malekko Voltage Block, which is being clocked by the 4MS Quad Clock Distributor. Outputs from the QCD are also triggering two Black HADSRs, both of which are controlling the VCA at different times. The Black Octasource is providing modulation to the Shape input on the Wavetable VCO and the filter cutoff, with the Intellijel Planar changing both the mix of the Crossfader as well as the modulation shape of the Octasource. The Black modulator is slightly modulating the rate of the Octasource as well.

STO Wavefolding Captured with Mordax Data

Published on May 31, 2017 Daniel LeGrand

"Variable output of the STO is being modulated and going through an Intellijel uFold II which feeds the 1st channel of a Malekko Fade.

STO Sub's S-gate being modulated, and the Sub goes to the 2nd input of the crossfader.

Make Noise Function is providing the amplitude envelope which is going through a Sputnik Quad VCF/VCA in LPG mode. Sequencing is provided by Rene with the Function's EOC driving the X-axis, and the EOR driving the Y-axis.

Batumi is providing modulation for the STO's variable output and S-Gate. Also modulates the crossfader, along with the Rise, Fall and Hang of the Function."

Cottontail

Published on Oct 30, 2016 davidryle

"Large format modular and Eurorack modular with a looping sequence from the Roland System 8.

The System 8 is sending cv and gate info to a Mutable Instruments Rings and Clouds to generate the very last 8th triplet bell sequence sound. That is doubled with the S8 patch in the modular and sent through a Modcan Dual Delay. The timing for the sequence comes from the Suit & Tie Guy Time Divider to the trigger input of the keyboard.

Everything else is clocked from a midi to dinsync signal into the Pamela's Workout divider. The 4MS Quad Clock Divider, Moon Modular Octal Clock Divider, Intellijel Plog and a Dotcom Q962 Sequential Switch are used to generate other timings.

The main bass line sequence is a Q960 in 5 step pattern, row switched through a Q962. The sounds are the Mos Lab 901 suite through a 904 filter and STG digital attenuators.

The secondary upper sequence is a pair of STG Soundlabs Voltage Mini Stores which again are row switched in a five step pattern through a Malekko switch module. The sound source is The Harvestman Piston Honda mk1 into a Music Thing Spring reverb and TipTop Z-DSP with Clocked Delays chip. AR timing is from an Intellijel Quadra+Expander to an MST Dual VCA.

Both of these sequence patterns are transposed with a dotcom Q119 sequencer. Timing for the change is from a Q173 Gate Maths.

Kick sound is a Sputnik VCS through an Oakley VC State Variable Filter and timing from a Moon Modular 562 Trigger Sequencer. Noise swashes are Sputnik WCRS through an Synthetic Sound Labs Segwencer IV into an STG mixer and on through a Jurgen Haible Tau Pipe Phaser. Additional filtering was through a dotcom Q150 and Q107.

The last sequence is from an Intellijel Metropolis to an Ian Fritz and SSL Double Deka Ultrasonic VCO. The VCO is sent through a MOTM 440 LPF and a SSL Steiner Filter (high pass) on through a dotcom EG and Behringer DD400 digital delay. It is then sent to a Strymon Blue Sky reverb in plate shimmer mode. The MOTM 440 filter is frequency modulated by a bank B output of the DDVCO through an Encore pitch shifter.

Recorded in Cubase in one pass. Video edited in Final Cut Pro. Text title made in Motion."
