doepfer a-124 vcf5 wasp filter

impurfekt

"please support the channel: https://impurfekt.bandcamp.com

the doepfer a-124 vcf5 is a 12db multimode filter using the filter circuit of the edp wasp; an analog synthesizer with a black and yellow case built in the seventies. this filter abused digital inverters as analog operational amplifiers leading to distortions and other dirty effects that generate a unique character. it's equipped with a band pass output and a combined low/notch/high pass output.

once i had gathered the filters i was familiar with i started exploring other options to expand my palette. after seeing a few demos i was very intrigued by the wasp filter. it reminded me a bit of an ms-20 filter but with its own brand of nasty. in person the wasp did not disappoint.

the layout is nearly identical to a few other doepfer options which made it easy to pick up and play. it has the mid-forward tone you expect from a 12db filter. high resonance is nasty and unpredictable but won't blow your speakers (which is nice).

where this filter really shines is when you overdrive it. it sounds like a different version of itself; nice and smudgy. you can get away with high resonance and still get an even sound level; which means you can use high resonance in a lot more situations. in that way it reminds me of the korg prologue filter (another filter i adore).

i appreciate a filter with a broad range of character and the a-124 definitely has it. i wouldn't say it's as musical as a moog or roland filter, but it has a very usable range of nasty and can make unique sounding bread and butter sounds as well. a great option if you're looking to add something unique to your toolkit.

malekko manther growl exploration

impurfekt

"please support the channel: https://impurfekt.bandcamp.com

the malekko manther growl is a synth voice for eurorack based on their manther desktop synth. it includes a cem3340 vco chip and an ssm2044-based analog filter. it has separate levels and outputs for the square, saw and triangle oscillators. it has two adsr envelopes with outputs and an lfo with multiple destinations and an output. it has a wavefolder with two modes: tri or all. the all mode folds all waveforms and the external input post-filter.

i've had my eye on the manther desktop for some time but knew i wouldn't utilize the built-in sequencing capabilities. upon discovering the manther growl i realized i could replace a number of modules in my existing rack (including my a-105 vcf which is based on the same ssm2044 chip) with room to spare.

after spending a few hours with the manther growl i'm very impressed. it's straightforward and sounds as good as the specifications suggest. the filter has a nasty, vintage character. the oscillators are beefy. the wavefolder is a unique addition that introduces unpredictable sonic variety. all the tools i like in a single oscillator synth are there.

my only critique is that driving the levels doesn't seem to alter the tone. the manther growl sounds as though it's always being driven. that said, it's still capable of subtle sounds. what it excels at though are thick, heavy, nasty, dirty tones. in short, it does what is says on the tin.

Squarp Hermod Sequencing Manther Growl & Drums

Published on Jun 12, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"Squarp's Hermod is a powerful option for sequencing your eurorack as well as sending midi out to other gear or even turning external midi into CV. The sequencer has 8 tracks with independent track length and built in midi effects for adding ratcheting and probability as well as other effects.

The synth line is made with a Malekko Manther Growl run through Qu-Bit's Prism. The Manter Growl is the synth voice from the Manther as a eurorack module with added CV controls and outputs for each waveform. The Prism is a stereo processor that combines comb filter, decimating and filtering effects into one with a freeze option built into the delay of the comb filter.

The kick drum is from Befaco's Kickall, snare is Intellijel's Plonk and hats are from WMD's Fracture. Everything is mixed together with Warm Star's Fragment."
