"Check out my Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0Frpq...

I originally made this track using a ‘strings’ pad on my JD-800, but I sat there feeling like “couldn’t I just do this with the Virus – and so I did. I don’t know whether they were similar enough because this is now the final copy. I like the JD-800, but it’s so big and feels unnecessary in my studio. Swapping out the gear like this makes me think that it’s even more true.
The drums were made by filtering all samples into the analog 24db LP filter and then into the fixed filterbank. Maybe I can make a video where I show how that changes the sound of the samples… It’s a pretty basic track and video though, so there really isn’t much to what I made here.

Caverns of snow | MIDERA
video upload by MIDERA
"Yesterday we had a winter storm. The snow was really pretty to see. Last year I don't think it snowed much at all, which wasn't normal for Minnesota. What is normal anymore? Well, I was going to pick up my daughter from school and bring her home in the sled, but I wasn't sure she'd get out in her snow pants, so I didn't do that. But then I took her (in the sled) to pick up her little sister. It wasn't still snowing, but they loved the sled ride. When we were home, we played out in the backyard with all the snow. It was peaceful. My youngest just waltzed around saying what a big helper she was. My oldest was just doing her own thing. I built them a big fort using a 55 gallon rubbermaid bin (filled it with snow, packed it, slipped it upside down, and pulled it up).
It's funny how I don't always want to be doing these things. I'm tired or hungry, or in a bad mood from work, but those kids were giggling so much, especially when we had a snowball fight (I would take the shovel and throw snow in the air as my attack). I'd say it was worth it. A good day is always the days I think I did something my girls might remember some day.
As for this song: This was the second track I played at a show two weeks ago. I think it's really fitting with the snow day I had with my kids - when I wrote it, I felt like it was a good fit for a winter-landscape.
I don't know if I'll get much done musically between my birthday and the holidays - but if I don't post anything else. Have a good holiday season.

Gone | MIDERA - Downtempo IDM
video upload by MIDERA
"I have been debating selling my Roland JX-3P (well, trading it for my old Virus kB, because I just love that keybed, even though I've got the TI). So of course I brought my JX-3P out and tested it out. Then I tested it against my System 8. Doing that made me just appreciate the JX more. Sigh. I don’t know why it is so difficult to part with this stuff. But when I played this sound (that you hear at the beginning), it just sang to me. I loved the noise that seems to become additive with more notes. It somehow helps create the tone I’m going for, especially when sent through the Strymon Volante pedal. It’s not that the System 8 doesn’t sound similar (in fact, I think I created this sound on the S8 first and then ported it over to the JX), it does, but it doesn’t impart any noise, or what I would call “character”. It just sounds lifeless in comparison. And so I’m left with what I’m always left with. More gear, because I find all my stuff useful and fun.
Well, I’m sure I could just do the trade. I bet any number of synths I have could make this sound. It didn’t even use ‘that famous Roland Chorus’. I probably spend more time trying to tell myself I can sell my gear, and then don’t, than I do playing the gear for music.
But I guess this time I used it to my advantage. I made a song of it.
Gear:
Radikal Technologies Spectralis II (Drums, sequencing)
Virus TI (Pad parts and keys)
Roland JX-3P (intro part and similar sounds throughout)
Sequential Prophet 10 (synth part)
Strymon Volante (delay for JX-3P)
Eventide Blackhole VST (reverb)"

Akai AX80 versus Virus TI A/B sound comparison: 1 patch
Published on Jul 8, 2017 MIDERA
"Made an A/B comparison of a somewhat simple sound I designed in both the AX and and TI. Personally - I found even the filter (on the TI this was the analog 2 pole filter) to be virtually indistinguishable.
Not the best A/B due to the simple type sound, perhaps I'll try to make a few more sounds that are more complex in the future. But for now - which is which (A is always Synth 1 and B is always Synth 2)."

Yamaha SK-30 | Once upon a life
video by MIDERA
"Yamaha SK-30 through an Eventide Space and Strymon El Capistan.
It's a limited instrument. But I like it. I really enjoy the organ and the monosynth, almost the two best parts of it. Here, the organ is playing along the entire keyboard, so it's played alongside the lead. They just sound so good together.
I thought I wouldn't like this... after reading that all voices in the polysynth engine shared 1 VCF (filter), I was certain this wasn't a keeper. This was something to throw out a week later.
I think I was wrong. It probably won't get into my main rig, but I'll place it meaningfully in my studio as an instrument, like my drums or guitar.
It's got a soul. It helps me write what I'm feeling. And for that, I like it."

Roland JX-3P brilliance and resonance after VCF resonance trim pot boost
video by thesrabbit
"Recently MIDERA published an interesting JX-3P vs the System-8 Plug-out comparison here: [see this post]
Many have commented that his JX-3P sounds a lot brighter than the plug-out. I have to agree, but I think that maybe mine does as well. Does my JX-3P sound that different from his? Here are some samples that more or less align with the sounds he plays in the first 5 minutes of the video.
Since there has been some discussion about the brilliance, I have included samples at 100%, 50%, and 0% brilliance.
It should be noted that I recently adjusted the VCF resonance trim pots to approx 850 mVp using the 3P's Test Mode 5, A2, as described in the service manual. Factory spec is 600 mVp. Though mine were all between 660 and 680 mVp before I started tweaking. I will be publishing a full walkthrough of that process in the near future. After doing this little exercise, I may decide to boost it even more. Then again, these examples all feature just a single sawtooth from DCO-1. When you add DCO-2 to the mix it definitely drives the filter a bit harder and can produce some squelch. I think I still might want more though.
Also, I realize that this video has the potential for many dislikes as I unfortunately don't have a Roland Cloud subscription or System-8 to compare against. It's meant to be compared side by side with MIDERA's video."
