OB-6: Creating and Explaining Synth Sounds 🎹🎛✨

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"It's time to learn about synthesis with the analog sounds of the OB-6
Join your friend MR TUNA as he takes a deep dive into this modern classic starting with a basic patch and exploring its features to create unique and distinctive sounds.

The Oberheim (or Sequential Circuits!) OB-6 is a highly regarded analog synthesizer known for its warm and classic sound. It's a collaborative effort between two legendary companies in the world of synthesizers: Dave Smith Instruments (DSI) and Tom Oberheim. Here are some key features and details about the OB-6:

Analog Architecture: The OB-6 is a true analog polyphonic synthesizer, which means it uses voltage-controlled analog circuitry to generate and shape its sounds. This results in a rich and organic sonic character.

Polyphony: The OB-6 is good for chords and complex musical arrangements. It has 6-voices that can be played polyphonically or stacked in unison.

Oscillators: The OB-6 features two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) and a sub-oscillator per voice. These oscillators provide a wide range of waveforms, including sawtooth, square, and pulse, (plus anything in-between) allowing for diverse sound shaping.

Filters: The filter on each card is based upon the 12dB/oct state-variable resonant introduced on the SEM, and offers a continous transition from low-pass, to notch, to high-pass- as well as an additional band-pass mode.

Modulation: The OB-6 offers various modulation sources and destinations, allowing you to create evolving and dynamic sounds. It includes an LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator) and an envelope generator for modulation.

Effects: This synthesizer comes with built-in effects such as delays, choruses, and reverbs adding depth and character to the sound.

Interface: The OB-6 features an intuitive and hands-on knob-per-function interface with knobs, sliders, and switches for easy sound tweaking and manipulation.

MIDI and Connectivity: It offers MIDI DIN and USB connectivity, making it compatible with other MIDI gear and software.

Overall, the Oberheim OB-6 is a highly regarded and sought-after synthesizer due to its superb sound quality, classic analog architecture, and user-friendly interface. It's a very cool and capable synth."

Creating and Explaining Synth Sounds on the Korg MonoPoly 🎹🎛✨

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"It's time to learn about synthesis with the vintage analog Korg MonoPoly. We will start on an initialized patch and use as many features and functions as we can to make new synth sounds from scratch. The Monopoly is a very unique synth in the way that you can play like a 4 oscillator mono-synth or play each oscillator polyphonically with paraphonic articulation. I really enjoy creating some crazy, out-of-control patches and seeing how maddening I can make it."

Making sounds on the Korg Prologue

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"Has the Korg Prologue been quietly discontinued?? it is one of my all-time favourite synths for its sad-analog, mourning-like Japanese sound and Blade Runner pads. 16 voices of pure VCO goodness and some incredible effects. Its got fantastic build quality (Made in Japan!) and inspires me everytime I play.

Here's some sounds."

Jupiter-4 Circuit Mod Demo for System-8 & Roland Cloud

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"The new JP-4 plug-out for the System-8 is here and the biggest new feature is 'Circuit Mod'

Vintage synths like the JUPITER-4 had internal trim controls that allowed technicians to tweak various analog components when they drifted out of spec. But sometimes, “out of spec” created a sound that was unique, interesting, or extraordinary. Realized through the latest ACB advancements, the new Circuit Mod function lets you sweep through multiple trims using a single macro control. Along with the Condition parameter, which simulates the effects of aging, you can dial in everything from a factory-primed JUPITER-4 to a road-worn synth that hasn’t seen a tech bench in decades.

The JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer offers full integration with the SYSTEM-8 keyboard. You can change the JUPITER-4’s plug-in panel to match the SYSTEM-8 for intuitive, one-to-one control. Or use the PLUG-OUT functionality to turn your SYSTEM-8 into a standalone, eight-voice JUPITER-4 that you can play in the studio or on stage."

Roland JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer Overview | A Vintage Icon on Roland Cloud

video upload by RolandChannel

Follow-up to this post.

"No synthesizer collection is complete without the original JUPITER. The iconic ’78 instrument set the stage for synthesis power with “Compuphonic” technology enabling digital voltage control and the ability to store eight user presets. Now, you can get the warm, fat sounds of the iconic JUPITER-4 synth as a plug-in for your DAW or a PLUG-OUT for your SYSTEM-8. Using Analog Circuit Behavior modeling, we’ve recreated the authentic circuit behaviors of the vintage instrument, including all the quirks and instabilities you know and love.

The beloved instrument got some modern updates too. New enhancements take the JUPITER-4 sonic powers to another level, including extended oscillator range, adjustable noise, velocity sensitivity, sub-oscillator volume control, and a flexible arpeggiator. And in addition to the perfect modeling of JUPITER-4’s lush Ensemble chorus, you can dig into a slew of added effects, including phaser, flanger, overdrive, reverb, and delay.

If you’re a SYSTEM-8 owner, the JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer offers full integration with your SYSTEM-8 keyboard. You can change the JUPITER-4’s plug-in panel to match the SYSTEM-8 for intuitive, one-to-one control. Or use the PLUG-OUT functionality to turn your synth into a standalone, eight-voice JUPITER-4 you can play in the studio or on stage.

Watch Laurence Jepson, aka LZARUS, detail the features that bring this vintage gem into the modern day and now into your DAW.

And the press release from Roland

Authentic Recreation of Roland’s First JUPITER Synthesizer, Now Available as a Legendary Series Plug-In and SYSTEM-8 PLUG-OUT Through Roland Cloud

Los Angeles, CA, June 16, 2022 — Roland announces the JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer, the latest addition to the Legendary instrument series available through Roland Cloud. Released in 1978, the JUPITER-4 was Roland’s first polyphonic synthesizer and the first to carry the JUPITER name. With the JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer, the authentic sound of this trendsetting icon is now available as a computer-based plug-in and a PLUG-OUT for the SYSTEM-8 synthesizer keyboard.

Roland products with the JUPITER name represent the current pinnacle of the company’s synthesizer development, a benchmark started over four decades ago with the JUPITER-4. In addition to incredible analog synthesis power, it brought then-revolutionary digital voltage control and the ability to store eight presets with technological wizardry dubbed “Compuphonic.” But the JUPITER-4’s real appeal was its warm, fat voice and inviting hands-on panel, which inspired synth pioneers to create the defining sounds of synth-pop, new wave, and other emerging styles of the late ’70s and early ’80s.

Roland’s evolving Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology brings the JUPITER-4 to life through careful analysis of original hardware units, circuit diagrams, and other historical data. This information is then used to recreate the authentic circuit behaviors of the vintage instrument—including all the beloved quirks and instabilities—giving the JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer a breathtakingly accurate sound that buzzes with unique character.

While the JUPITER-4 only has a single VCO, it sounds positively massive, thanks to the combined characteristics of its oscillator, filter, LFO section, and more. ACB brings all these elements together like the original hardware, capturing the behavior and component interactions to create sonic magic. Going further, powerful new Circuit Mod and Condition controls allow users to adjust the overall character to suit their taste.

The JUPITER-4 also includes enhanced features for modern workflows, including extended oscillator range, adjustable noise, velocity sensitivity, sub-oscillator volume control, and a flexible arpeggiator. In addition, phaser, flanger, overdrive, reverb, and delay effects are available to complement the lush Ensemble chorus effect from the original keyboard.

The plug-in flows easily into modern DAW environments with a resizable UI, support for VST3, AAX, and AU formats, and native compatibility with Apple silicon. It also offers full integration with the Roland SYSTEM-8 Synthesizer. Users can control the software plug-in from the keyboard’s panel, and PLUG-OUT functionality turns the SYSTEM-8 into a standalone, eight-voice JUPITER-4 for stage and studio playing.

Availability & Pricing

The JUPITER-4 Software Synthesizer is the newest member of Roland’s Legendary series on Roland Cloud, which includes plug-in versions of the JD-800, JUNO-60, JUPITER-8, TR-808, TR-909, and other Roland classics.

In addition, any Roland Account holder can purchase Lifetime Keys for individual Legendary series titles. This provides unlimited access for as long as their account is active, even if they don’t have a Roland Cloud membership.

The JUPITER-4 is part of the Analog Polysynth Collection, a new Legendary series bundle that also includes the JUPITER-8, JUNO-60, JX-3P, and JUNO-106 software plug-ins. The bundle provides Lifetime Keys for all included products and offers a savings of nearly 40 percent over purchasing individual titles.

Juno-X vs. System-8: Matching Sounds (Juno 106 Models)

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"One of the most requested comparisons, it's time for a super synth showdown between two Roland virtual heavy-hitters: the Juno-106 models on the new 2022 Juno-X and the proven 2016 (has it been 6 years?!) System-8.

This comparison isn't about how 'true to the original' either one sounds, it's about how the sounds compare to each other-- so I won't be including my ratty old original 106. They are both great synths, and each has its own pros and cons, but as for the sound-- that's for you to decide!

We start with an initialized patch on both synthesizers, then it's a delicate balance of building up sounds as closely as we can from there. There will definitely be some differences and some advantages, but only one can be named the ultimate VST-in-a-box!

I cut out my whole boring intro for you so we just get straight into it-- let's do this!

It's an all-new episode of "Patch Match From Scratch"!

Chapters:
0:00 - Init patch
2:50 - Comparing filters
4:00 - Patch building break ❤️
4:14 - Bringing sounds closer
5:24 - PWM
7:07 - Juno chorus

10:51 - Patchin building break ❤️
11:28 - Saw waves & sub waves
13:36 - Key Differences

Comparing Juno-X vs Original Juno-106: Patch Match From Scratch!

video upload by MR TUNA Music

"The comparison you're dying to hear! Two synths enter, but only one will be crowned KING!
Ok actually they are both *awesome* machines, but today's experiment is to show of how close we can get the newly announced Juno-X to the classic 106 from 1984 that inspired it.

We'll start with a initialized patch and build the sounds up as closely as we possibly can.

That being said, my poor old 106 is approaching 40 years old now and it has its own set of quirks and issues. After about an hour the outputs start to crackle and a some of the faders and pots are a bit scratchy or skippy. Its still an amazing sounding instrument tho, and the Juno-X really holds up to that legacy.

Check it out! And let me know what you think."
