11/10/23 (demo) External audio through the modulation circuit of Maestro Rhythm King MK4 (for sale)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by Cfpp0

"A beat gets added at 3:35 to demo the full sound of the machine, but otherwise this is just the sound of the Hewlett-Packard 241A oscillator (into the Heathkit ID-4101, padded down by a Rucci passive mixer) sent into the modulation circuit on the Maestro Rhythm King MK4. Each available preset is selected so that you can hear how the circuit chops up the external audio in relation. You can also combine two or three presets for more complex rhythms."

7/16/23 DEMO: Maestro Rhythm King MKIV (for sale) chops TTMC and Trogotronic

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
video upload by Cfpp0

"This Rhythm King is the true King of rhythm machines because it has an internal modulation circuit that gates your external audio to correspond to the pattern of the beat. You have control over the modulation depth and volume. You have control over the beat volume and the balance between drums or cymbals. You can combine more than one pattern to generate new patterns. For this demo I am playing continuous notes on the TTMC 112, which CVS the 158 oscillators, and the 112 gates the Trogotronic m11 and also sends pressure to the drive input. The output goes to a 106 then to a passive Rucci matrix mixer (I was going to make the modulation circuit feedback on itself a bit, which sounds cool BTW) and into the modulation circuit where the Rhythm King slices and dices."

via this auction

"This is a rare Maestro Rhythm King Mark 4. It is VERY different from the more common and more colorful Maestro Rhythm King (we have it too if you want to buy it). The biggest difference is that the MKIV has an external audio input, which gets fed into a gate circuit that follows the rhythmic patterns of the preset pattern you choose on the drum machine. Check the video in our photos and cut to 2:45 to see and hear how it works.

You can blend the drum sound using a fader to go fully hats, to be mostly kick and toms, or anywhere in between. The volume for the external audio has its own volume fader, as does the drum volume, so you can also use it just to modulate audio and not use the drums. There is also a blend fader for the gate on the external audio, so you can dial in how much of an abrupt cut you want."

V.A.I. 62 Welson Stereo Symphony / Maestro USS / Maestro Rhythmking 4 / Ekosynth

video upload by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

This appears to be the first post to feature the Meastro Rhythm King 4.

"The mighty Welson Stereo Symphony is a rare Italian string machine with modulation stereo capabilities that are quite unique.

The Maestro USS is the first multi- effect for guitars: phaser, envelope follower, octave follower, Sample and hold etc.

The Meastro Rhythm King 4 is a drum machine with a rhythmic, tremolo modulation - chopping up whatever sound source you give the input in the back."

VAI 6: Crumar Multiman S/2 / Maestro Universal Synthesizer System

video by Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"Crumar Multiman S/2 gets sliced up by the modulation section of the Maestro Rhythm King 4, then on to the envelope filter of the other Maestro machine: the Universal Synthesizer System - an early, maybe the very first, multi-effect for guitar.
Spring reverb brought to you by Telefunken Echo Mixer.
The other output of the Multiman gets phased by the Mu-tron phasor.
Steelphon S900 and noise routed to the Binson Echorec."

Vintage Tonic

Magnus Lidström

"We have developed a machine-learning algorithm that generates synth sounds from audio samples. To put this algorithm to the test we created Vintage Tonic: a recreation of ten legendary drum machines for Microtonic.

Read more about it here: https://soniccharge.com/forum/topic/1...

Download the patches from: https://soniccharge.com/download"

Some additional info:

"Vintage Tonic is a patch package for Microtonic created from recordings of the following classic drum machines:

Maestro Rhythm King (1960)
Keio / Korg Minipops 7 (1966)
Roland CR-78 CompuRhythm (1978)
Korg KR-55 (1979)
Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer (1980)
Oberheim DMX (1981)
Linn Drum (1982)
Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer (1984)
Roland TR-707 Rhythm Composer (1984)
Roland TR-505 Rhythm Composer (1986)

Notice that the collection includes both analog and digital drum machines. Naturally, the digital drum machines are much harder to reproduce using Microtonic's synthesizer engine, but even imperfect results are fun, and I find the sounds quite useful.

The older drum machines were mainly preset pattern players. I have painstakingly tried to reproduce not only their sounds but also all of their original patterns."

VAI 4 : Maestro Rhythm King - Maestro USS - Crumar Multiman S/2 - Elka Solist

Vintage Audio Institute Italia

"Making good use of the Crumar Multiman S/2 string separate outputs: string section are going through the Mu-Tron phaser, brass and bass sections are going through the Maestro Rhythm Kings' modulation effect : an input in the back of the drum machine will chop up the input signal like a rhythmic tremolo.
From there is goes to the Maestro Universal Synthesizer (?) System, possibly the first multi-effect ever put on the market, triggering the envelope filter and adding some phaser there as well...
The Maestro Kings' drums are processed through the Roland RE-301 for crunch and echo.
The Elka Solist 505 monophonic synthesizer is playing the lead.

We make these videos as a showcase for our studio and for curious vintage heads - and for fun.
We don't dilly-dally too much with production and mixing but it can sound pretty good with headphones on."

"Crumar Multiman string machine with separate outputs: strings are going through the Mu-Tron phaser, brass is going through the Maestro Rhythm Kings' modulation effect, an input in the back of the drum machine will chop up the input signal like a rhythmic tremolo.

"Uncommon beatbox which features the superb and unique modulation section which allows you to groove an external signal (e.g. guitar, synth etc) using the on board rhythms. This is stunningly-effective and a great creative tool.

Modified with separate outputs for the rhythm and the modulated signal."

Moby's Drum Machines For Sale

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

You can find them on Reverb here.

Don't miss the video here.

Update: some pics and details captured. I made the mistake of trying to capture them all and then realized how many were listed. :) I ended up switching to the more esoteric models. Quite a few have never been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH before. What's a little bit interesting, is only two new labels were needed, one for Domino and one for Side-Kick-Er. All other brands have been featured before. See the labels at the bottom of this post. Side note: Blogger limits the number of characters to 200 for labels, so I wasn't able to capture them all for this post. You can always search for the brand names featured for more. I assume most do this anyway. The labels are more for maintenance and for finding posts that may not feature brand names in descriptions.

"Along with the Acetone Rhythm Ace, the Maestro Rhythm King MRK-2 help put the drum machine on the map as an revolutionary instrument, with a great debt to Sly Stone. This drum machine is in incredible shape for its age, with the only odd repair of the handle (as seen in the pics). Functionally, this funk box is cracking and loud, sounds fantastic, and will chug along for years to come. Includes original cover, and the footswitch and power cable are in great repair."

"Up for sale is a restored 1960s/1970s Maestro Rhythm King MRK-1 analog drum machine- as used by Sly & The Family Stone. This unit is in very good cosmetic condition (I glued back some of the tolex that was peeling off) and has been fully tested to be in good working order. All rhythm presets work great, and all individual sounds work. You can combine rhythms with this drum machine to make your own funky beats. It includes the original start/stop footswitch (it’s permanently attached internally, but slides out the back along with the attached ¼” TS guitar cable and the U.S. 3 pin power cable."

Maestro Rhythm King MRK-1 vintage drum machine demo video

Published on Sep 15, 2013 thenormanconquest·46 videos

"This is a demo for a vintage Maestro Rhythm King MRK-1 drum machine. This video features direct recording (D.I.) as well as a voice-over by myself. The unit itself doesn't have much extra hiss/noise, but you will also hear my laptop's fan noise in the video that bled into the voice-over mic. There are no problems with this unit, it sounds great and all the preset rhythms work! It does include the attached start/stop footswitch as well as a 1/4" cable to go to a DI box or guitar amp."
