Bad Shape | Adventures with a broken Intellijel ShapeShifter

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"I am preparing a video for the Intellijel Sealegs delay which was also good opportunity to refres my limited knowledge of Metropolix, ShapeShifter and Rainmaker. I got the ShapeShifter used, and it's never been in good shape. I never found the time or need to send it in for repairs because it has to go to Canada and there's no warranty.

So when I use ShapeShifter, I need to recalibrate it, or even reinstall the firmware when presets are lost. It has amnesia so my guess is that its memory doesn't survive a long powerdown. I was curious if all the necessary software would still work. I think ShapeShifter was introduced somewhere around 2014 and the digital world is changing much faster than analog.

After installing firmware, my ShapeShifter turns into a super advanced LFO because the VCO still needs calibration. I think it ticks below 1 Hz from time to time. It's useless as a voice in this state, but it can still make amazing sounds. I may have to keep it like this and find myself a new one. But it's not a bad thing."

Last Time Playing This Patch Before Unplugging Everything

video upload by Izntrik

"Just a streamed synthesizer techno, electronic, and ambient jam session. Less polished than live shows, more for practice and experimentation. It's almost time to ruin this patch and move a bunch of modules around to expand my live setup into two eurorack cases instead of one. More drums, more control, more fun! Gets a little experimental at the end. Enjoy the synths!

Patch Notes:
Intellijel Metropolix is the sequencing Plaits and Doepfer A-111-6. Zadar is sidechaining, modulating morph on Plaits, and pulse width modulation on the Doepfer. Basimilus Iteritas Alter switches between quantized voltages from the Polar 8 and also sample and hold pitches from Metropolix with triggers from the euclidean sequencer running on Ornament and Crime Hemispheres, runs into the WMD C4RBN filter for wavefolding and saturation. Tesseract Modular Polar8 is controlling delays, drum density, resonance, saturation, A-111-6 pitch, euclidean offset, and BIA pitch. Prok and Pico Drums are being triggered by the 6equencer and Dnipro Dot. Endorphin Ghosts, ALM MFX, and Qu-Bit Prism for effects.

Intellijel Cascadia Melodic Techno with Metropolix sequencer

video upload by Intellijel

"Intellijel Cascadia is sequenced by Metropolix which in turn is synced to Ableton Live via the Midi 1U module. Output A of Metropolix (CV A) has been patched to modulate the ENVELOPE A time. It is used to shorten the envelope right when the sequence is doing a faster ratcheting. The Metropolix clock output is patched to the Cascadia S&H trigger which is used to modulate the filter cutoff.

The second Pitch output of Metropolix (PITCH B) is used to sequence VCO B of Cascadia. VCO B SAW is mixed into the first channel of the Mixer as an additional melodic layer.
The Strymon Timeline is connected to the final output for some added delay fx."

Eurorack: Polyrhythms Electronic Jam feat. Metropolix - Subharmonicon - Mother-32

video upload by lucafrancinimusic

"I've programmed two sequences in Metropolix, the second one skips a beat creating an unfinished loop. The Doepfer clock divider spits out triggers at various divisions that clock the DFAM, Mother-32 and the Subharmonicon, which at the end of the video adds its own polyrhytm using the two internal sequences.

Eurorack: Ethereal Glitches with Chord V2 - Data Bender - Nautilus

video upload by lucafrancinimusic

"I've recently got a few modules for my new Eurorack case and this is the first video with all of them. The patch notes are in the video and below:

I've programmed 4 chords in Qu-Bit Chord V2 and I've stored them in the User bank. The two 4-steps sequences from Bloom select the chord and the root note.
Mixup is used to sum all four Outs (3rd and 5th are patched in Mixup stereo Ins to get a wide stereo image of the chord pad).

Mother-32 is sequenced by Intellijel Metropolix (the master clock of this patch), it goes into Data Bender and to Cosmix Pro where it receives a touch of Nautilus delay, which is patched as parallel fx in the mixer.

Chances modulates the cutoff frequency of Mother-32.

This video is NOT sponsored by any of the brands visible and mentioned throughout this video."

Baba O’Riley (Modular Synth Who cover)

video upload by Planter Music

"Maybe I’ll go back and figure out what the second synth is doing but what a classic. I used the ALM ASQ-1 for the main synth arpeggio and then the bass notes. The metropolix is doing the secondary synth part and then the squid Salmple for the drums."

Knobcon 2: Hungry Rat DIY workshop!

video upload by Synth Diy Guy

Hungry Rat 2hp distortion - opamp comparison

video upload by John Schussler

"Welcome to the niche-y-est of all niche-y eurorack videos. The focus of this video is on tiny differences (or not so tiny) between opamps (operational amplifiers) in the Hungry Rat distortion, a 2hp module made by Modular for the Masses and inspired by the ProCo Rat.

To be fair, you'll still get a good intro to the Hungry Rat, which is a very nice use of 2hp. So if you're not opamp obsessed, skip around and just get the flavor.

If you are interested in opamp contributions to the sound, in this video you'll get to hear 4 different options. The 'bog standard' TL072, which everybody uses for everything; the TLC2262, which I gather is 'special'; the NE5532P; and the B072A.

VCO is a Doepfer A-111 sequenced by Intellijel Metropolix.

Further Explorations // Verbos Scan & Pan + XAOC Devices Timiszoara, Odessa, Batumi and Zadar

video upload by Genshi Media Group

"::| TO HEAR THE FULL RANGE OF FREQUENCIES AND STEREO EFFECTS, A GOOD PAIR OF HEADPHONES IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED |::

Further explorations with the Verbos Electronics Scan & Pan mixer and the XAOC Devices Timiszoara, Odessa, Batumi, and Zadar. The Scan & Pan is turning out to be a pretty amazing module as it Scans through the three channels featuring the Odessa's Odd, Even, and Fundamental outputs (and Pans channel three which is Odessa's Fundamental.) Couple that with the Timiszoara for effects and the modulation on the Odessa, makes for some really interesting sound!. Sequencing provided by the Intellijel Metropolix. Modulation from Batumi and Zadar which is also providing the Envelopes for Channel 1 and 2 of the Verbos."

Roland SH-101 vs Softube Model 82 - How they really compare? Does software stand the test?

video upload by Friendly Noise

"Please take your time and read the notes included at the beginning and along the video. They’ll help you understand the comparison.

Please also consider subscribing to the channel if you like the video. This is a very time consuming activity, I make this just as a hobby and the only way to know that it’s worth the effort is the statistics of the channel. I have no message for the mankind, but I need to know if you like what I do, if that makes sense. :-)

Video sections:

Played by hand
00:06 Information about the comparison
00:49 Simple sawtooth sound
01:08 Sawtooth filter sweep without resonance. Longest attack and release times

Does Roland deliver? Comparing the Jupiter 4 and the Promars plugin.

video upload by Friendly Noise

The modulation comparisons at 17 are interesting.

"Jupiter 4 vs Promars plugin

This text contains information about how the comparison was made. If you want to read a longer review, please download the pdf file at the bottom of this page.
But if you want an unbiased experience, stop reading and go see the video or jump to the desired part of the video using the video sections below.

In any case, please also consider subscribing to the channel if you like the video. This is a very time consuming activity, I make this just as a hobby and the only way to know that it’s worth the effort is the statistics of the channel. I have no message for the mankind, but I need to know if you like what I do, if that makes sense. :-)

Ok, this is a comparison between the Roland Jupiter 4 and the Roland Promars plugin. The Promars is a dual VCO monophonic synth. It is said to be technically very close to the Jupiter 4. So, if we use only one Promars VCO and don’t play chords on the Jupiter, the resulting sounds should be theoretically very similar. But close enough to allow for comparisons? Let’s have a listen!

No video or pics of the filter and envelope settings are included. There made no sense because the position of the parameters in the Jupiter 4 and Mercury 4 didn’t match.

Levels are matched using peak normalisation. The Promars is just a little quieter. That’s how the plug-in works.

No effects, EQ or processing were added to the direct sound. The Jupiter 4 onboard chorus is always off, and the second Promars VCO is of course switched off, too.

Party Ready Patterns With Bass Lines - A Happy Gathering of Flux, Metropolix and Pulsar 23

video upload by Friendly Noise

"The fourth collaboration between IOLabs Flux, the best trigger sequencer, and the Soma Pulsar 23 , arguably the most amazing if not the best drum machine ever made. The combination of sound quality, easy of use, open design, interconnectivity and interactivity makes the Soma a fantastic piece of musical gear, and which is more important, a real instrument to play with. The amount of control and flexibility that Flux puts in your hands can lead you to totally unexpected sonic landscapes, like you can see and heat in that video.
Barry at IOLabs and Vlad at Soma Instruments are real geniuses of our time.

Patch details are included in the video."

Eurorack jam featuring Metropolix, Manis Iteritas, Prok Drums, Zen Delay, and electric guitar

video upload by

"A live, semi-improvised modular performance performed entirely on hardware, with one guitar overdub.

This jam started with a simple exploration of the Intellijel Metropolix, a neat sequencer that helps you stumble into inspiration, along with two voices (the Noise Engineering Manis Iteritas and the Acid Rain Chainsaw). My ambitions were no more than "play guitar with eurorack". But as the song found itself, and more and more was added to the table, it became clear I'd have to add guitar after the the fact.

A big highlight here is the Prok Drum modules being sequenced by the Mutable Instruments Grids. Not only is Grids fast and inspiring, but its modulation allows you to add performability (like the snare rolls I add via a touch pad here) and variety (through its chaos and frequency controls). Special thanks to Michael, a good human and also a member of my Patreon community, for allowing me to commission him to build the Prok modules! You're the best, Michael.

And of course, the Erica Synths Zen Delay works its magic again. Here, it runs everywhere from flanger to filter to gonzo delay, and I just love what it adds to a jam.

The patches would take a very long time to explain, but here are the modules:

Voices:
- Noise Engineering Manis Iteritas
- Squarp Rample
- Acid Rain Chainsaw
- Qu-Bit Chord
- Frequency Central Product
- Prok drum modules
