"Moog Minimoog model D 1972 Walnut Original vintage USA analog Synth. Mint condition plus Kenton CV gate-Midi, (cables and S trigger) original manual, Travel hard case.

This synthesizer is truly a collector's item, used by only two owners and currently restored and serviced, being in perfect condition.

Two owners; Initially it belonged to ReneƩ Toro, a musician who played with Prince, the king of funk and of whom nothing is currently known, when he disappeared under strange conditions; giving a more significant value to this musical instrument."

"Totally original-- all the important stuff, the walnut cabinet, keyboard, faceplates, mod & pitch wheel, the ' 'Old' (amazing sounding) oscillator boards, most of the knobs, the owners manual.

Just recently had a $500 tube up and replacement of crucially out if spec stuff in the power supply. It's tuned brilliantly.

The big story is: serial number just over 3000. This is a hulking beast with a low end so phat and present, and earth shaking, vibratory... it's hard to explain how a machine like this seems to hover in the air when you play it.

It has thee magic, the mojo.

Sure, it's not a museum piece, there are battle scars a plenty, but that's standard stuff. Nothing out of the ordinary and nothing taking this absolute beast out of original."

Moog Minimoog Model D - Vintage Late 70's w/ Professional Road Case SN 10742

via this auction

Synth City is a new sponsor of MATRIXSYNTH! You'll find their banner on the right of the site.

"This is a very clean and lovely sounding Model D, which has been thoroughly tested. This is a later serial number, 10742, thus this synth has the more stable second revision of the oscillator board. The unit was opened to find a manufacturing date, but none was evident. The serial number and notched white pitch and mod wheels would indicate somewhere between 1978 and 1980.

Cosmetically, there is a light to moderate amount of wear to the finish on the upper left and right corners and top edge of the control panel. There is a little bit of wear to the wood on the end cheeks closest to the keyboard, but for its age this Mini is rather clean. The front panel is flawless, as are all knobs and switches. Operationally this synth is phenomenal, the key bed is quite level and plays wonderfully, and all knobs and switches function perfectly noise free. We did not have cause to have this instrument serviced, as it fired up and played great right out of the case, and to the ear sounds to be in calibration. Thanks to the second rev oscillator board, it stays well enough in tune for reliable live use night after night or for countless hours of studio wizardry.

To the best of our knowledge, this Model D spent most of its life in the rental department of Andy's Music (now SIR) as evidenced by the stenciled phone number on the bottom of the unit. As a backine unit, this synth was regularly serviced, and comes with a heavy duty flight case, likely from the 1990's. Since being sold by Andy's in 2012, it has had two owners, notably Decade Recording Studios here in Chicago. A cinch jones to 3.5mm adapter is included with the unit, as well as an original Model D manual. The manual itself is actually for the earlier revision of the Model D, as it includes the calibration procedure for the earlier oscillator board.

This Model D is ready to be back in regular use, and would be a great instrument for a player, a studio, or a collector. Please contact us for further questions and concerns."

Minimoog Model D Synthesizer (1974) SN 8516

via this auction

"Single owner, been on the road in the 80's and since then has been in temperature and humidity controlled environment. This was purchased in early 1976 and from what I can tell it is a 1974 model. This unit has all original parts (including owners manual and sound charts) with the exception of the OSC 2 frequency pot. It does have that fat, analog sound that Moog is known for.

There are a few dents and scratches - one in particular(see pictures) and a number of smaller bumps and scratches. The keys show some wear-normal usage and the A4 and B2 have small cracks (hard to show in picture) The keys have fair action but could use some work. Most notably, the contacts on D1, G1 and F4 don't always make a solid connection and the pots and switches are a little scratchy, they may just need a good cleaning.

As with many Mini's there is oscillator drift. In this case it is pronounced. If allowed to warm up for 15+ minutes it will stay in tune for short periods of time. The issue is OSC 2, OSC stays in tune pretty well but also shows some drift.

The pitch wheel is cracked and while it functions, it is not smooth and the pot needs to be replaced. The modulation wheel is unresponsive and this pot also needs to be replaced. The OSC 3 Control switch is intermittent and overall modulation seems to be tied to the bad pot on the mod wheel."

"For your consideration is the Moog Minimoog Model D synthesizer. The unit was gently used but shows significant cosmetic wear(see pics). The Minimoog has been fully tested, and all functions work with the exception of the power light. The serial number is 66xx which puts it in the sweet spot of Moog manufacturing..."

"Original owners manual included. Original purchaser claims they bought the instrument in 1971 although the interior factory inspection dates would indicate an assembly date of January 1976. Super nice all original in perfect working condition. We see no modifications or repairs. All parts are correct and original. Maple cabinet is very nice with attractive with original walnut stain. Two keys stick up, typical of these, not bad only two. Fantastic rich sounding, all keys work all functions work. A great very clean and all original example of a very desirable Mini Moog perfect for live or recording."

360 Systems 20/20 Frequency Shifter (BODE)

via this auction

"This is a very rare item, probably the first I've seen one on ebay. It is a Frequency Shifter, model 20/20 by 360 Systems.

360 Systems was (and still is) an innovative company that developed this pitch changer (as used by Synergy/Larry Fast, John McLaughlin), one of the first guitar synths (John McLaughlin) the first sample-playback keyboard and many audio post devices since. They also developed the first LINN Drum for Roger Linn. Bob Easton was/is their clever designer."
360 based their design on Harold Bode's rare "Klangumwandler" that was made and sold for Moog in the late 1960s and early '70s.

The Moog/Bode 6552 Klangumwandler ('sound-changer', in German) was an interesting concept, to modify pitch (frequency) without changing the overtone structure. Bode's invention was first created for Ussachevsky's electronic music studio at Columbia University (Bob was quite familiar with the composer and studio, as well as his various students like Wendy Carlos. Wendy and Tomita used this module on their classic albums. Club of the Knobs synthesizers now make a very accurate replica of the original Bode/Moog module and you can see it (and the similarity to this 360 design) on their website. The 360 has the same "series of 5" settings (5,50,500) as the Bode - and mixed vs. independent outputs, although the squelch is internal on the 360 via trimpot. There is CV (Voltage Control) of the frequency - great with a sequencer, CV pedal (McLaughlin) or random. These are similar to a ring modulator, but have a VERY unusual effect at the lowest settings. This is the effect I love (and why anyone should own this) - a deep phasing in stereo, without "messing up" the sonic quality of the original signal - all bass a treble frequencies remain solid, and the harmonics shift around in stereo beautifully. It's weird but not ugly - very HiFi and cool-sounding.

BODE

some text from the web):
'... the EWE, which stands for Electro Wagnerian Emancipator. There's only one of them; it was designed for me by Bob Easton at 360 Systems… That is now gathering dust in the warehouse. I tried to use it on "Big Swifty" from Waka/Jawaka - Hot Rats, but it didn't end up on the final track." (BTW synth geeks - this is mystery item was basically just an EML Polybox, same idea!)

'We also have some neat little 360 Systems model 2800 programmable equalizers, which are four-band parametric with memory storage for saving any particular settings that you may like. Those were designed by Bob Easton and are no longer available, but we have a few of them.'"

via Brian Kehew of Moog Cookbook

Update via eben in the comments: "check out the comment in that ebay auction in the questions section - none other than Tom Rhea, author of the minimoog owners manual"

via the auction:
Q: Hey neighbor, interesting that you have a frequency shifter for sale, but your description that a klangumwandler shifts without changing the overtone structure is incorrect. Pitch shifting a la the Eventide Harmonizer does this; Harald Bode built frequency shifter(s) that provide a LINEAR shift in frequency (Hz) for all partials in the input signal. This will, of course drastically change the "overtone structure," not preserve it. Sorry to be a drudge about this, but I knew Harald well, teach this stuff at a well known music College," This message purely in the interest of sharing information. Hope you get a good penny. PS, I have several Bode 1630 FS (lucky me, but just knowing Harald was the real treat!) Tom Rhea (author Minimoog Owner's Manual, etc.) Good luck in the sale! Apr-14-09
A: Hey Tom - you are likely QUITE right. I only said it was based upon the Bode - which seems quite true given the controls and front panel, steps of "5's" etc. Obviously, the audio track given shows what this very unit does exactly, so no deception is implied.

Minimoog With Ribbon

via this auction.

Details:
"Minimoog model D, excellent conditions. If you are thinking about bidding, you know well what it is. S.n. 5474, old oscillator board, buffer board. This Mini is incredibly stable in pitch! Very good esthetic condition, all knobs and silver centers are there. The woodwork has only some signs of the time (according to my opinion, it's worth 9/10). Both Moog nameplates are on it. This Mini has still its yellow Moog original tag, labelled "september 1974": the machine seems as coming from a time capsule... All of the keyboard bushings have been replaced one week ago by an excellent technician with new, very rare and expensive rubber ones, so it has a smoooooooth and precise feel, as it used to have at its birth. Last but not least, it sports the LH controller with the ultraRARE ribbon controller; this was an option offered by Moog, as reported in the Minimoog owners manual (I'll send also copies of this, if needed). Such a controller, alone, has been sold at a recent UK auction at more than 500 euros!!!) It works 100%. My references: I am a vintage synth collector, on eBay since 1999, 100% positive feedback; some of my machines are pictured in the nice Peter Forrest book on Vintage synthesizers (my name, Fernando Zarone, is in the acknowledgements). According to the actual eBay policy trend, due to the vintage nature of this Minimoog (35 yrs old), it is sold AS IS, NO RETURNS are possible. Anyway, I don't think you'll be able to find a better one in the future! If any question, please consider I shall have some difficulties to reply from april 8th to 12th, being abroad for Easter holidays. I'll be able to give a precise shipping cost after the end of auction. Happy bidding!"
