Update: press release follows:

"Pouring from the heart of Norfolk, hosted by the Norwich Arts Centre, curated by Electronic Sound Magazine and run by Molten Modular, Synth East is back. After a devastatingly successful 2023 show the sold-out Norfolk-based festival of synthesizers returns in 2024 but this time it's been widened into a full weekend experience.

The all new Friday evening Synth East event is curated by Electronic Sound Magazine and kicks off with (possibly) the UK premiere of a documentary on electronic musician Morton Subotnick, who at 90 years old, is known affectionately as the Father of Techno. It’s called Subotnick, Portrait of an Electronic Music Pioneer by Waveshaper Media who brought us the intoxicating 2014 documentary, I Dream of Wires.

Following the film we have writer, broadcaster, comedian and musician Adam Buxton chatting with Synth East alumni Steve Davis about music, life and modular synths. Finishing off the evening we have an ambient set from modular musician Luke Sanger as we relax into some beers in preparation for what’s to come for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday’s Synth East Expo is a carnival of control voltage, a festival of synth sounds and a party of epic performances. Dozens of manufacturers will be filling the Arts Centre with synths and modulars to give you an opportunity check out their marvellous machines and bask in the glow of synthesiser technology. You’ll be able to chat with the makers about the gear and even have a personal demonstration. Simply walking through the auditorium in the company of such exciting gear is completely thrilling.

Throughout the day we’ll be having some performances from local artists Hardwired and Tristan Burfield before we once again embark on the awesome modular experiment of the all-star patch off. This year, joining Robin "Molten Modular" Vincent, Steve Davis and Gaz Williams will be Mylar Melodies, Nina Richards, and Jason Jervis. These are unique, improvised performances that you’ll never see anywhere else.

Saturday night’s synthesiser explosion features the 80s synth legends Blancmange who have kindly agree to fit us in before their extensive Everything is Connected: The Best Of Blancmange tour of the UK. Supporting Blancmange we have eclectic electronic music duo Ultramarine featuring Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond. And in the warm up slot is our own Robin “Molten Modular” Vincent and a special guest.

On Sunday we are hosting some Eurorack DIY workshops presented by Befaco and Thonk. They will be held at Electronic Sound HQ at Capital House over a few hours. The idea is that you buy a ticket for the workshop and then order the kit that you hope to build directly with Befaco or Thonk.

Synth East 2024 runs from the 23rd to the 25th of February. Each event is available as a separate ticket and there's a bundle deal on buying the Saturday Expo and evening performance together.

Our intention is to revel in the world of synthesizers, modular and electronic musical boxes. We want to explore sound through performance, discussion and hands-on interaction. It's a lot of fun and open to anyone with an interest in bleeps, tones and noises."

Quadrantid Swarm by Eowave

Cinematic Laboratory

'I had my eye on this one since I saw it in Paul Tas' personal Error Instruments case. While my module was on its way 'home', I saw Mylar Melodies' video using it in a techno set. I was already sold, but wow I did not expect the QS to be that cool. Unfortunately mine came without a spring reverb and I am not sure the Eurorack version includes one. Oh well, nothing a Desmodus Versio can't fix."

Switched Multiple - Easy DIY Eurorack Module

Published on May 27, 2020 Extralife

"This week I built a really simple diy eurorack project, the switched multiple. Simply, a signal can be routed to one of two destinations or neither via a toggle switch. It can also be used in reverse to send one of two inputs to a single output. It's a very simple project to build, requiring only a switch and a few jacks and some wire, with no circuit board needed.

I got the idea from watching Mylar Melodies' video, THE MODULAR MAGIC OF SWITCHED MULTIPLES: [posted here]

This is a 100% passive design, and active/buffered multiples may perform better with CV signals sent to multiple destinations."

Building Mutable Instruments Braids / Learning Hot Air Soldering

Published on Mar 11, 2020 Extralife

"I need to learn SMD soldering so I picked up a PCB and parts for the classic eurorack digital oscillator, mutable instruments' Braids by Emilie Gillet. This version has been superseded in some ways by Plaits but I quite like the look of this one regardless.

I tried out a couple different soldering techniques including classic tack-and-place with the iron and lead-free solder paste with a hot air station. The paste wasn't super easy but maybe leaded paste is better for DIY work. Along the way I fried a couple components and had to troubleshoot so I tried to give some insight into how I track that stuff down and fix it.

The module sounds great! I needed to upgrade my case power supply after this build but that's massively improved with a separate digital power rail.

Surfing the ASM Hydrasynth at NAMM 2020

Published on Jan 19, 2020 Red Means Recording

"I touched an ASM Hydrasynth for the first time at NAMM 2020. I like it a lot. It's very well laid out and sounds really good. I REALLY like the arp patch at the end.

Here's the footage of me surfing presets and making tweaks while playing.

When you see me not playing and being bothered it's because Mylar Melodies was next to me doing a video for Future Music and wouldn't stop talking to me. Dammit."

Moogfest 2019 Announces GAS, Kimbra, Tim Hecker & The Konoyo Ensemble, Martin Gore, Matthew Dear +more for its initial lineup

via Moogfest

Durham, N.C. [February 21, 2019] – Celebrating the 15th year since its inaugural event in 2004, Moogfest returns to Durham, NC on April 25–28 to honor the innovative spirit of sonic pioneer Bob Moog. The first wave of Moogfest’s 2019 lineup celebrates artists from the festival’s 15 year run, introduces new talent who are creating the sounds of tomorrow, and reaffirms the intimate, artist-attendee connection for which the festival is known.

Joining Moogfest’s electronic odyssey for the first time are GAS, the best-known alias of hyper-prolific composer and Kompakt co-founder Wolfgang Voigt; polymathic songwriter and producer Kimbra; and Herzblut Recordings founder and techno producer Stephan Bodzin. Moogfest welcomes back ambient experimentalist Tim Hecker, who will be joined by The Konoyo Ensemble, idiosyncratic electronic composer Matthew Dear, and Swedish techno minimalist The Field. Moogfest again explores the boundaries between artist and audience through an interactive daytime program of workshops, masterclasses, and two-way conversations. This year features a creative exchange with Martin Gore of Depeche Mode.

As a platform for sonic experimentation, Moogfest invites artists to express themselves in new formats and debut new works. This year will see the return of the staple longform Durational Performances. Noise veterans A Place to Bury Strangers and IDM artist, sound designer and coder Richard Devine will each present four-hour performances. Iconoclastic ambient and musique concrète composer William Basinski, who has sampled the sounds of black holes colliding, will lead this year’s Sleep Concert.

Also joining the 2019 lineup are songwriter, beatmaker and label boss Suzi Analogue; avant garde composer Lucrecia Dalt; R&B futurist Ouri; upstart Raleigh-born rapper and producer Mez; darkwave duo Minimal Violence; polyglottic analog synth-pop artist Ela Minus; post-rave renegade and modular enthusiast Baseck; pop experimentalist Meghan Remy’s project U.S. Girls; breakout film score composer Drum & Lace; sound designer LP Giobbi; electro-thrash provocateurs Fartbarf, interdisciplinary performance artist Lisa E. Harris; visual artist and producer Debit; and techno DJ, producer and Fever Am label owner Mor Elian.

Moogfest’s unique format of daytime presentations and nighttime performances also offers an unprecedented platform for artistic discovery, inviting audiences to step inside the creative machine and learn the process behind the production. Two artists at the forefront of artistic education, Cuckoo and Mylar Melodies, will each lead workshops and performances. With a special focus on output that blurs divisions and defies categorization, the festival also welcomes the thought-provoking work of multimedia musician and comic McQueen.

Upcoming announcements will complete the full 2019 performer and presenter lineup and detail the wide range of experiences attendees can look forward to at Moogfest including this year’s Spatial Sound performances and artist-led workshops. At Moog’s Pop Up Factory, Engineer Workshop passholders will delve into synthesis at the foundational level and come away with their own hand-built, limited-edition, unreleased Moog synthesizer. Durham’s American Tobacco Campus will once again host interactive music technology exhibitions in the Modular Marketplace, including the Moog Circuit Bending Challenge and the presentation of this year’s Moog Innovation Award. World-renowned instrument designers, futurists, creatives, entrepreneurs, scientists, pioneering educators and thought leaders from across the social spectrum will participate in keynotes and daytime presentations that will complement local artist programming and free outdoor events open to audiences of all ages.

Now in its 15th year, Moogfest continues to distinguish itself as the destination festival for the synthesis of music, art, and technology. A limited number of tickets remain on sale. More info is available at Moogfest.com.

Building a Eurorack Synthesiser for Kids

Published on Jul 31, 2018 DivKidVideo

"I recently worked alongside Mylar Melodies showcasing and exhibiting modular synths (specifically Eurorack) to children (and some adults / parents) in the Science Tent at Deer Shed festival. Deer Shed is a family friendly festival with a large number of kids and parents and the Science Tent gives them a chance to come and try soldering, make slime, chemistry workshops, build raspberry pi units and come and make music and play on euro rack synthesisers or try out making music on a Ableton with guys from a local Ableton group.

For the event I tried to put together the best Eurorack synthesiser that I could that was a mean little groove box of beats, melodies, bass, FX and some more out there fun stuff. So here's what I used, how I patched it and how it went.

Mutable Instruments Plaits, Marbles & Stages Self-Patched Modular Beta Testing Beats

Published on Apr 14, 2018 mylarmelodies

"This is a little weird sound experiment (light on melodies, high on mylar - skip to 6:10 for more melodicness) I recorded while beta-testing the new Mutable Instruments Plaits, Marbles and Stages, which I received all at once. When I put them all together in the case, I was struck by something: These three new modules, perhaps with the addition of a Clouds for effects and some utilities/VCAs like Blinds and Veils, are in effect like having a complete little Mutable 'Music Easel', in just three core modules.

This is especially because of the way that Plaits makes it so easy to switch modes, so that on a per-step basis it'll make a different sound - it can fill out the sound spectrum far more than it seems it has any right to. The ensemble is incredibly capable and flexible, and an amazing thing to have if you're interested in the whole 'generative' thing.

I was very struck by the elegance of what Olivier has achieved, especially with Stages, and look forward to getting to know these better. I'm going to be using them in my live system, but I wish in a way I had another set I could just put in a small system, something self-contained and fixed, to focus on and explore.

For more, I recommend Lightbath's Loom series which explores these (and the idea of building a system out of them!)"

SUPERBOOTH18 Details & Schedule

"SUPERBOOTH18 at FEZ Berlin - 03-05 May 2018 - Trade Fair for Electronic Musical Instruments. The latest developments in (modular) synthesizers, keyboards, effects, studio equipment and software.

Almost 250 exhibitors from all over the world, 22 concerts and Gesprächskonzerte daily, panel discussion, workshops and much more.

It starts at 11:30 am with the spacious boat shuttle starting at Jannowitzbrücke and a trip through the eastern part of the German capital. Arrived at the FEZ Berlin the visitors can enjoy daily at 1 pm the first concert of the still young day program on the Seaside stage, or they can attend one of the beginner workshops on modular synthesizers, one exclusively for women and non -binary persons, and one open to everyone. Gammon, together with a school class, develops a performance for the Modular Synthesizer Ensemble, presented daily at 1:30 pm. Afterwards, at 2 pm, the promotional stage program begins with concerts by Caterina Barbieri on a modern Eurorack modular system and Leon Michener on a prepared grand piano. Altogether there are 11 concerts of this kind daily, on Friday for example with Bernd Kistenmacher on classical synthesizers, as well as Udo Hanten on a 5U modular system. On Saturday, among others, there will be the Gesprächskonzert of Nonlinear Labs with Stephan Schmitt and the C 15 keyboard. Parallel to this, DIY workshops, specialist workshops from the participating educational institutions and the entertainment program of the other exhibitors will take place throughout the day. So it makes sense to come to SUPERBOOTH18 for more than one day, to also watch the concert of Carolina Eyck on the Theremin or Tobi Neumann and Fadi with an ambient performance.

For people who like to sleep a little longer the boat shuttle is available at 2:30 pm or 5:30 pm. Thus one reaches the FEZ Berlin on time for the evening program and for spending some time on the exhibition before the evening program begins at 7 pm. Here #instantboner, T.Raumschmiere & FucketYbUcKetY, Ströme and Tikiman shake hands. With the low -priced ticket for the evening hours you can also see Boys Noiz with 2244, ATEQ, GusGus and many others. Max Loderbauer, who was on the SUPERBOOTH17 stage last year together with Ricardo Villalobos, will play together with Tobias Freund as NSI this year.

Those who like it a bit quieter will be pleased about the film screening of The Potential of Noise, a documentary about the legendary music producer and studio operator Conny Plank. The film is commented and explained by the initiator of the film, the son of the protagonist. On all three evenings there will also be discussions with guests such as Daniel Miller, Uwe Schmidt and Mark Ernestus. Some aspects of The Potential Of Noise will also be addressed here. During Thursday's SOOPERtalk Lady Starlight, Andrew Huang, Lady Blacktronika and Mylar Melodies will discuss the fascinating interaction between humans and machines in the creative context of music making.

The return trips of the boat shuttle at 8:30 pm and 12:00 am take the guests directly to the landing place at the Jannowitzbrücke in Berlin Mitte, from there it is not far to the official after-show location C-Base. The after-show program will be announced at short notice.

More details and additions to the three-day program can be found on the official website. You can also keep up to date by subscribing to the newsletter on superbooth.com.

CYMRU Beats 17 Modular Synth Meet Announced - Saturday June 17th, Cardiff

Full details: https://cymrubeats.com/cb17/

"Cymru Beats, the annual Welsh meeting for modular synthesiser enthusiasts, marks its third year in 2017.

We’re heading back to Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff again for a day of electronic music and sound, but this year with an even better venue, Chapter's Seligman Theatre.

The first modular synths were developed in the 1960s by legendary US synth makers RA Moog and Co. and the scene received a major injection of energy and popularity with the invention of the “Eurorack” system by Germanys Doepfer Musikelektronik in the 90s. The backlash against the computer and software, and the rush back to electronic analogue hardware is still exploding today.

As well as niche specialists there are many mainstream artists who have discovered the joy of the modular – including Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Lloyd Cole and Radiohead.

The evening performances will see some truly great and talented British electronic musicians and sound sculptors."

Performers for this year's event include Mylar Melodies, Nigel Mullaney & Ian Boddy, Martin Dubka, Wisdom Water, and Dr John Biddulph.
