"Even if you don't know his name, you know Mike Dean's sound. The super-producer and "Synth God" solo artist is a pillar of modern music production. The Weeknd, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Madonna, Jay-Z, Christine and the Queens—these artists and more have made classics with Dean, and that's just his recent work.

Before that, he helped craft a whole era of Southern hip-hop with the likes of Scarface, Geto Boys, UGK, and Devin the Dude, after getting his start as Selena's keyboardist and musical director.

Ahead of an upcoming solo performance at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre on March 1, we got the chance to see the genius at work, learning first-hand exactly why so many artists seek him out.

Clinching the top spot once again, the OP-1 has now topped our best-selling electronic gear lists for five years straight. It's perhaps an easier decision than ever to buy the tiny powerhouse. Thanks to the release of the new OP-1 Field and distance from peak-pandemic pricing, the OP-1's average used price has dropped more than $200 since January 2022. (The OP-1 Field sneaks into the top 20 this year too.)

It should be noted that a lot of folks bought Polyend Trackers this year. Back in August, Polyend cut prices on the full-sized versions, first in its official Reverb shop and then elsewhere, following the introduction of the Tracker Mini. Having not made the list at all last year, the Tracker ranks 19 in 2023—and that's after excluding purchases made from the company's Reverb shop."

There are a handful of general scuffs and scratches here and there. A strip of the veneer on the front wood panel is torn off and dangling. The top metal enclosure is missing a few screws so it lifts up if turned sideways. The "High" output jack is a bit scratchy and loses connection in which case you kind of have to find its sweet spot to get it to pass signal. There are a handful of buttons that seem to have difficulty engaging unless firmly pressed. This is likely due to some dusty pads. Everything seems to function, however this synth would definitely benefit from a tune up to address some of the minor things stated above.

'I got this from a friend, and he thought it was broken, so I got it basically for nothing. I went to RadioShack and got a cell phone battery… and I soldered it in there, and it started working. One thing that drew me to it was I heard that Boards of Canada used it a lot, and it’s got this joystick that can get a wobbly vibrato going.'

"In this video, Julian demos the 64 presets included in the "J3PO OB-X8 Presets: Future Vintage" for the Oberheim OB-X8.

This demo was recorded dry straight to Pro Tools, with no external FX, save for some light compression and leveling for the purposing of uploading to YouTube. What you hear is what you get! Of course, users are encouraged to add their own FX, such as chorus, reverb, delay etc. to the sounds. Please see my upcoming video '20 minutes of beautiful OB-X8 & Strymon soundscapes' to hear some of these sounds in context.

There are 64 patches in this preset library and they will load to patches 'OB-X: Groups 8-16' on the OB-X8. The introductory sale price is $39 (normally $45).

The library covers a lot of sonic ground, ranging from ultra vintage Oberheim sounds to tones that fit right into contemporary production. The Oberheim palette is the sound that originally got me into synthesizers (the OB-Xa) and it’s such a joy to have a re-issue of one of the world’s most beloved synthesizers. "I would visit Herb and his wonderful wife Nancy every time I was in New York City, which allowed Herb and me to take long walks around their neighborhood. During those walks he would talk about Dad, the early days of pioneering the Moog synthesizer, about the darker period when Dad had to sell the business, the couple of times that Herb and Dad had significant disagreements, and the years Herb served as marketing director, and then sales director for Moog Music in Buffalo, in the period after Dad had left the company."

Geologist used on stage for 2012-2013 CHz touring.

SN: SE10307 There is some cosmetic wear including minor scratches and sticky residue on the side panels. The keys have almost entirely yellowed but they are in good playing condition. There is a strip of loop-side velcro on the top left corner of the control panel with a piece of tape below it indicating there used to be a delay pedal housed there. There are two long strips of hook-side velcro running up and down the underside of the synth. All buttons, knobs and wheels function properly. The synth as a whole is in good working order. No power supply included. User's manual as well as Moog road case with wheels included.

SN: 4063801 There is some cosmetic wear including light scratches, scuffs and dust throughout, but the synth is overall in clean condition. There are a couple of very small dings in the side wood panels. The instrument is in proper working order. All buttons, knobs, faders and keys are intact. Overall this is a great synthesizer that features a plethora of sounds and colors at its player's fingertips. No case or power supply included.
