62HP Eurorack Drum Machine - House / DNB / Juke Beats

video upload by Perfect Circuit

"Our next 62hp adventure is a tribute to the driving rhythms and beats of dance-driven electronic music, spiced up with the fun of patching that can only be found on a modular system. Tubbutec’s new 6equencer adapts the classic TR-606 workflow into the open-ended Eurorack environment, allowing any synthesist to compile their favorite modules in the drum machine of their dreams.

Armed with some of his favorite drum modules, Wes breaks down some classic drum patterns and explores how they can be expanded and turned upside down within a patch. WMD’s Crater and Tiptop Audio’s HATS909 provide dependable kicks and hi-hats, while Qu-Bit’s Surface, the Erica Synths Sample Drum, and WMD Fracture help to expand the sonic vocabulary beyond typical drum machines. We’re also using the RND STEP from DivKid and SSF and Doepfer’s A-145-4 (mounted in in the 1U row with a handy adapter by Abyss Devices) for parameter modulation, and Befaco’s Stmix as a mixer.

62HP: Contextual FX Processor - Small Eurorack Effect System

video by Perfect Circuit

"Back again with our trusty Intellijel Palette case, this episode of 62hp journeys into the world of Eurorack effects processing in a system dubbed the Contextual Effects Processor. While the name is a bit of a play on the inclusion of the Harlequin’s Context from Shakmat, the modules chosen for this system were picked for their versatility and ability to fit into a wide range of musical situations.

For our effects, we turned to the Data Bender by Qu-Bit Electronix for glitchy, digital artifacts, the expansive Milky Way from Endorphines for general purpose effects like delays and reverbs, and the crushing Guillotine distortion from Ritual Electronics. We’ve also got a Bastl Cinnamon for filtering and additional drive, and the Katowice by XAOC Devices supplies crossover filtering and multi band isolation for situations where surgical sound shaping is needed. External sounds enter the system through a pair of Mutable Instruments Ears modules, but we can also take advantage of their built-in contact mics for generating and processing sounds fully within the system itself.

The Harlequin’s Context is a preset programmer for generating linked sets of control voltage sources. Each of the four channels can be set up as an LFO, envelope generator, and more, and the configurations of all four are stored together in scenes, which can be accessed manually with buttons on the front panel or sequenced and scanned through for ever-changing modulation in your patches. When paired with a traditional modulator like ALM’s Pip Slope, any system (especially one loaded up with all kinds of effects like this one) can come alive in compelling ways.

62HP Pingable Percussion Party Box - Super Synthesis

video by Perfect Circuit

"In this episode of the 62HP series, we’ve loaded up our Intellijel Palette case with a plethora of cool modules from Super Synthesis, alongside a few other key modules to build out a Pingable Percussion instrument. For our purposes, a 'ping' is a gate or trigger signal that will be used for things like triggering internal envelopes or resetting the phase of clock rates.

The centerpiece of this system is the PHRSR from Super Synthesis, a two-channel phrase recorder that captures knob movements in sequences up to 16 steps in length. One thing which makes this module unique is that the external clock input doesn’t override the internal clock, but rather it performs a hard sync reset that can be manipulated to create swing, syncopations, and other metric transformations. Also from Super Synthesis, we’re running dual 2OPFM modules for percussive FM sounds, the VCAR for CV controllable attack-release envelopes, and the ISO two-band DJ-style EQ.

We’ve also chosen a few multi-functional modules to give our compact Eurorack system a bit more versatility. The ever-flexible Ornament and Crime, malleable Pique from After Later Audio (based upon Peaks from Mutable Instruments), and the Milky Way multi-effects module by Endorphin.es help this little box pack a punch well above its weight. For sequencing, we’re relying upon the trusty SQ1 from Korg, and a special edition PO-133 Street Fighter Pocket Operator from Teenage Engineering processed by the Ritual Electronics Guillotine adds some additional sonic accompaniment.

62HP EP5: 4 Voice iPad Sequenced Synth

video by Perfect Circuit

"This 62HP system is a four voice synthesizer with effects that is designed to be sequenced by an iPad with USB, but you could sequence it with any USB midi.

The synth voice is made with the Recovery Effects Jupiter Spirits quad VCO, an Intellijel Morgasmatron dual filter, XAOC Zadar quad envelope/function generator and two Intellijel 1U Dual VCAs for 4 VCAs total. There are two effects modules, the WMD/SSF DPLR dual delay and the Erica Synths Dual FX which has two DSP effect channels. The USB to CV is handled by the Noise Engineering Univer Iter. The iPad is used to both sequence the four synth voices with the Fuge Machine app, and to create the drums with Ruismaker.

62HP EP4: Darkwave Lunchbox Synth + Drums

video by Perfect Circuit

"This 62HP eurorack setup is a full analog drum machine and synth voice which features two sequencers, distortion and compression effects as well as an LFO for modulation.

The drums in this system are handled by the Endorphin.es BLCK_NOIR analog drum synth. An Intellijel 1U Steppy four channel trigger sequencer goes well with the BLCK_NOIR. There is also a Future Retro Trax sequencer that can generate pitch sequences for the synth voice which is the Erica Synths Bassline. The Baseline is an entire voice in one module, in this video we used the 2HP LFO as an FM oscillator for the Baseline, but you could also use the LFO for more subtle modulation. For processing these sounds the Seca Ruina by Noise Engineering is a multi band distortion, great for dirtying up your signal without loosing too much bass, an SSF Autodyne provides compression with an optional sidechain input!

62HP EP3: Small Synth + Sampler

Perfect Circuit

Perfect Circuit 62HP posts

"Episode 3 of 62HP is here! For this system we built a small single voice synth designed to make one sound at a time and combined it with an Elektron Digitakt. This allows you to sample a bunch of sounds into the Digitakt and then sequence a live voice on the synth and make a full song.

The system includes uses a Make Noise STO and ALM MCO as oscillators, the MCO can be used as a noise generator as well. We used an Aion 904A lowpass filter which is based on the Moog Modular filter, for VCAs we used a WMD DVCA (great for drums) and a Plankton Nutone which can also be used as a tube distortion. The Zadar gives us all of the envelopes we need, an Erica Pico DSP gives us some effects and mixing can be done with the Malekko Mix and Intellijel Quadratt. The Elektron Digitakt doesn't fit in the eurorack case but is an important part of this system since it provides the ability to sample the synth and then sequence it with midi.

62HP EP2: Sample And Scratch Groovebox

Perfect Circuit

"For this second episode of 62HP we put together a groovebox system that combines sample based sounds with a simple synth voice, effects and a pseudo scratching sound with a fader for cutting the sound.

The ALM Squid Salmple generates most of the sounds with it's 8 channels of sampling. Everything is sequenced with the Malekko Varigate 8+. Erica Synths Pico Voice is used for a synth line and the Pico DSP adds effects to the case. The "scratch" sound is made with a sample looping on the Squid Salmple, the pitch is modulated with the Soundmachines LS1 and the sound is cut in and out with a Jesse Dean Designs JDDX2R Fader. Everything is housed in an Intellijel Palette case and the 1U Quadratt is used as a mixer.

Module List:

Trovarsi Eurorack Techno Tutorial With Noise Engineering Modules

Published on Dec 10, 2019 Perfect Circuit

"LA-based techno artist Trovarsi recently came by our shop to talk about modular synth techniques. If you're curious about how to make techno with a modular synth, this is a great place to start. In this demo, she shows that even the most modest setups can be powerful musical tools when approached with some fundamental techniques and a healthy dose of experimentation. Learn more here: https://www.perfectcircuit.com/signal...

Trovarsi uses a 62hp Intellijel Palette case of Noise Engineering modules to create an array of alien percussion, slithering bass lines, and frantic, aggressive leads. By linking several sequencers and modulation sources to a single clock source (the Horologic Solum), she keeps everything moving together. Her only sound sources are a Basimilus Iteritas Alter and a Manis Iteritas—but by deploying some clever patching, she expands these into a complex tapestry of fluid, yet aggressive sound.

Proving you don't need a lot of gear to make compelling sounds, Trovarsi turns this tiny system into a full-fledged, in-your-face groovebox."
