♫ Jamming With a Bunch of Synths ♫ ----- (79)

video upload by

"This jam is a little weird. My phone was on low battery which made the video slightly glitchy. I was a bit distracted during this recording so it's maybe a bit more boring than usual. There is also a couple mysterious audio drop outs near the end of the video. I didn't notice these prior to uploading so it's possible something went wrong when combining the audio and video files or something.

Prophet-10 Jam I

video upload by verstaerker

"i got my Prophet-10 and so i started jamming around. As i have no intention to make traditional sounds with it i came up with this techno-jam wich started with this super-fat unison-detuned-lead sound.
The other elements of the track or done on the Syntakt, the polivoks.pro and the Macbeth Elements.
Sequencing was done on the Syntakt and Hapax."

Polivoks Pro (Reissue) full demo

video upload by manmade madman

"[[[ Поливокс ]]]
In 2017, the Polivoks Pro was announced and began shipping. This was a joint effort between Alexey Taber and Alex Pleninger, with supervision
from the original creator, Vladimir Kuzmin.
It was designed from the original schematics using NOS Soviet parts, and handmade.

Only 100 units were built.

This is a demo of my unit, which I feel is currently the best Polivoks version available. I am controlling it via CV/Gate from the SH-101.

There is no external processing whatsoever.

Normally I run the SH-101 thru the input of the Polivoks. During the video, the SH-101 volume was off. When no cable is inserted, the highest left knob controls input gain. Part way through the video, I remove the cable.

0:00:00 Intro!
0:01:50 raw oscillators in drone mode
0:03:11 LFO modulation
0:03:20 Pulse Width Modulation (only on OSC 2)
0:04:35 Portamento
0:05:25 White noise through filter
0:05:40 Bandpass filter
0:06:23 Looping envelopes
0:07:30 Sequenced
0:09:09 An Accordion?
0:11:30 FM from audio rate LFO
0:12:50 A thick bassline
0:13:30 something something bassline2
0:15:10 same thing, but make it triangle, cross mod FM
0:15:51 back to drone, Sample & Hold
0:17:35 make it squelchy
0:20:00 make it acid
0:21:38 Pull the input cable, showing internal feedback
0:22:58 finally, a new sequence
0:26:46 Looping envelopes
0:28:00 Lets turns everything on max!

While this is intentionally not a musical demo, it is an overview of most of the features. It should demonstrate to you what it could sound like and whether it fits your music. This is not for everyone, but I still feel this is the best version available today. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

Previously in 2013, I made this demo with an original Polivoks: [posted here]

Later in 2015, I made this demo of the Harvestman/Industrial Music Electronics Polivoks Eurorack modules: [posted here]"

Two Erica Synths DB-01s attempt Subharmonicon ambience

video by Richard DeHove

"Can two Erica Synths DB-01 Bassline machines achieve Subharmonicon-style ambience? They are wildly different in design and capabilities but the DB-01s can do a surprisingly good impression of "meandering ambience". Here I run through the entire setup and tweaks with less talking as the video goes on. What I did find is that the wonderful Polivoks filter won't be denied and the machines seemed to naturally gravitate to grit and filth and finally ended up in dark ambient territory. For contrast listen at 4:35 and then jump to 20:20. Both machines are running through the same Fabfilter Pro-R reverb setting at a 25% mix.

PS: The focus becomes steadily softer through the video. Why? Who knows, but it's the last time that camera will fail me. Next time, a new camera.

0:00 Intro blather
0:24 Adding steps and setting the scale
0:39 Step cycling
1:00 Setting the LFO
1:36 Polymeters
2:03 Percentage probabilities
2:39 Second LFO adjusted
3:08 Polymeter and LFO settings overview
3:23 Music finally starts!
3:37 Drone mode added
3:53 Setting the random pitch range
4:35 Subharmoniconicky yet?
6:45 Restricting pitch to one octave
8:15 One high; one low
8:55 LFOs to sample and hold
9:28 A few extra steps
11:06 Slowest possible synced LFO
12:40 Both set to two octave range
13:26 Thinning out the patterns
14:00 Grit appears
14:56 Both to triangle waveform
15:08 Getting dark and dirty
17:40 The Polivoks Revenge
20:20 Outro jam: the DB-01s back in character

February Filter Sweep YouTube Protest & a Call to any YouTube / Google Employees

Youtube claimed copyright on a synth filter sweep video by ranzee

"I can't believe we are now getting copyright claims just for performing tests on synths! Yep - all I did was a filter sweep - and BAM! Copyright Claim police came on in and took my video away (partially) from the world. This is ludicrous!"

This one was sent my way via supporting member, Synth Addict.

For those not aware, YouTube has algorithms that scan audio in videos for copyright infringement. If something is found in violation, the video is automatically unpublished. The problem? Apparently certain filter sweeps are triggering take downs. This is becoming a problem for synth demos (per ranzee above, and previously mentioned here for example). I am curious what sample is being used for the comparison. Rush's Tom Sawyer? :) Actually, Synth Addict mentioned it being a Chemical Brothers track, which does sound familiar. Anyway, if anyone out there reading this has any connections, maybe you can reach out to someone that can fix this?

For the rest of us, not sure how the following will help, but if anything it will bring some attention to the problem amongst the synth community.

via Synth Addict:

"What users can do:

Post a video on YouTube of yourself demonstrating a filter sweep on a synth or synths of your choice and tag it #FFS

How To Load Synth Presets into the PG8X VST plugin

Published on Apr 26, 2020 Synth & Sundry

"Several viewers want to know how to load preset sounds into the PG-8X VST plugin synth emulating the classic Roland JX-8P. This is because when you first load up the PG8X in your DAW, the plugin's preset banks are empty which can throw off even the most experienced producer. This is why I put up this quick tutorial.

If you want to hear the PG8X in action, listen here: [Three videos below. Additional posts here]

Free Roland JX-8P synth emulator - PG8X VST plugin

Published on Oct 31, 2018 Synth & Sundry

"Massive synthwave vibes from this synth VST plugin. It's a faithful emulation of the classic Roland JX-8P synth, taking interface cues from the optional PG-800 hardware controller.
You can hear a few patches found on the internet. The PG8X VST synth plugin can load in original JX-8P patches over sysex. You can hear some pads, leads and brassy tones in a few melodic examples of what this free plug-in can do."

Polivoks - Polivoks Pro

Published on Sep 23, 2019 SchneidersLaden

[deutsch]

[english]
The Polivoks Pro can sound rough and vintage like hardly any other synthesizer you can buy new in a store. This new edition of the classic is built in Russia, is hard to get and much rarer than the original. The Polivoks Pro is in no way inferior to the original! Even the labeling is original, but on the underside there is a handy translation table Russian-English. So everybody should be able to find his or her way around quickly.
