Rediscovering A Rare 70's Synthesizer with Tara Busch - Warren Huart: Produce Like A Pro

Published on May 14, 2019 Produce Like A Pro

"The Resynator is a monophonic pitch-tracking synthesizer with a pretty remarkable story. The instrument-controlled unit was invented by Don Tavel in the ’70s to track the pitch of any instrument plugged into it and produce synthesized sounds. As the world’s first synthesizer of its kind, the Resynator was way ahead of its time, but unfortunately never saw the proper production and distribution it deserved."

Resynator Documentary Kickstarter Launches

Follow-up to this post. The Kickstarter campaign is now live here. Click through for full details including the different pledge levels.
Some info captured for the archives here on MATRIXSYNTH:

"Hi, my name is Alison, this is my story about finally connecting with my dad through a synthesizer from the late '70s. I know it’s weird, stay with me…

When I was 23, I began working for Grace Potter as a tour assistant. Grace is my hero and one of the most talented humans I’ve ever met. Over the years of touring and being around musicians constantly, it would come up in conversation that my dad invented a synth, but I didn't know anything else about it - I truly didn't even really understand what a synthesizer was. Eventually when we had a few weeks off tour in 2014, I flew to Indiana to get it.

Resynator Documentary Coming to Kickstarter

Published on Nov 14, 2018 Alison Tavel

There have only been two previous posts featuring the Musico Resynator below here. Alison Tavel wrote in to let me know she is working on a documentary on the Resynator which was actually created by her father, Don Tavel. The trailer for the film is above. You might recognize a few people. :) The Kickstarter campaign for the film launches in six days. It's looking to be a great documentary.

Musico Resynator | Hexsynator

via Wayne Joness Roland Guitar Synth Updates

P.S. You can find a flyer for the RESYNATOR here.

"A few years ago I was contacted by Alison Tavel regarding the Resynator, a Pitch and Envelope tracking synthesizer her father Don Tavel had invented in the 1980s.

The Resynator had quite a pedigree from the start, Don Tavel had a Masters degree in Music from the Indiana University Center for Electronic and Computer Music. The difficult engineering design work was done by the legendary Mike Beigel, founder of Musitronics.

Where things get really interesting for the vintage Roland guitar synth player, though, is with the Hexsynator, which looks to be a fully polyphonic six-voice extension of the original unit, complete with a cool vintage Roland 24-pin guitar input!

Read more about this forgotten synth, and support Alison Tavel and her Go Fund Me campaign!"

Hartmann Neuron Synthesizer SN 0420 0294 0601 Unboxing Shots

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

Some pics in via MATRIXSYNTH reader Dirk who is currently selling it here. This is a brand new Hartmann Neuron.

"The German made Hartmann Neuron was a polyphonic synthesizer that attempted to break new ground using a new form of synthesis and sound-modeling they say was based on technology found in neural networks. What the Neuron actually does is it analyzes audio files (samples) and creates digital computer models of these sounds which can then be re-synthesized and processed using the extensive amount of on-board data-wheels and joysticks with control of more 'musical' sonic aspects such as instrument shape, size and acoustic behavior. The joysticks allow for real-time tweaking of up to three parameters at once - 3D modeling in a true 5.1 surround sound environment.

The Neuron shipped with 200 modeled sounds already in its memory, but using their proprietary software application, ModelMaker (Mac/Win) a user can add their own sampled sounds to be modeled by the Neuron's neural network, and these can be stored in the user memory banks (sounds could be brought into the Neuron via analog, S/PDIF or USB connections). Instead of oscillators, the Neuron uses Resynators, of which it has two. Each resynator holds a single model (you can freely assign any models in memory to each resynator to build your sound). Each resynator has a joystick that lets you adjust the 'scape' and the 'sphere' of the sound. 'Scape' refers to the generation properties of a sound (such as the excitation source in a real instrument), 'sphere' would contain all parameters referring to the properties of the resonating 'instrument' body. The Neuron's Blender function lets you mix the results of the two resynators in a variety of ways, including morphing and crossfading. It even lets you manipulate one resynator using another.

Hartmann Neuron Demos

Published on Dec 4, 2014 Panu Savolainen

"Hartmann Neuron Demo Part 1

Contains 40 favourite patches of fairly rare synth.

Every patch is played and tweaked realtime so there can be radical changes in the sound (beware!), tweaking mostly Resynator 1&2, Control 1/2/3, Filters and effects.

These are only few sounds Neuron can produce and didn't want to include any "real instruments" or analog-type patches because you wouldn't buy Neuron for them anyway."

Twirl iPad app - control Neuron VS VSTi

Published on Mar 13, 2014 glidepro1984·18 videos

"Twirl is a simple MIDI controller designed to work with the Neuron VS virtual instrument for desktop sequencers.

Neuron VS was released in around 2005 and shipped with a hardware controller. The Neuron VS has sadly been discontinued, however the owners of the software have recently the software component available for free! So, anyone with a Mac and a compatible VST host is able to run the Neuron VS and write music with it free of charge.

One of the exciting features of the Neuron VS is its Resynators, similar to oscillators that you generally find in every synthesiser. There are 2 Resynators in the Neuron VS.

In order to manipulate the Resynators, the hardware controller that shipped with Neuron VS was required. These controllers are very rare now, so this iPad app has been created as an alternative form of control. The app has been set up to transmit MIDI CC data, as specified in the Neuron VS manual, with the graphics of the app reflecting the graphics in the Neuron VS."

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!!!  I hope 2012 treated you well and I wish you the best in 2013!

As I do each year, I thought I'd reflect a little on the past year.  These posts are always difficult to write, and I always wing them, so bear with me.  It's impossible to justify a whole year's worth of synth coverage in a single post.  The following is just a small bit of what comes to mind when looking back.  You'll find a top ten list of posts with the most page views followed by my picks for the year further below.  Apologies if I miss anything, and of course, if you have anything to add, feel free to leave a comment below.  I'm curious what you, the readers of the site, felt stood out in the world of synths this past year.

First, I want to begin this post with a HUGE THANK YOU!!!  If you are reading this it obviously means you have come to this site and some of you have been coming here for years! Thank you for sticking with me. This site is a journey I hope to continue for years to come. Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to showcase their synths, and thank you to those that share what they find! Thank you to those that link to the site and help spread the word on MATRIXSYNTH via Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and your own websites! And of course, THANK YOU to all the sponsors on the right who believe in the site enough to support it!

A nod to previous New Years posts, pictured to the left is the MATRIXSYNTH world domination map. :)  I always think it's worth taking a look at who's watching the site.  Synths are global and you are looking at a map of the readers of MATRIXSYNTH.  Everything you see in green represents a visit from that country.  The darker the green, the higher the number of visits.  This is just for the year, but for the life of the site, we still haven't gotten a single hit from North Korea!   I don't know what they have against synths!  ;)   You'll find the top 10 visits by country further below.

This is the eighth New Year the site has gone through!  The focus for the site this year has been the same as previous years, and I plan to keep it that way.  This site is about showcasing specific synths, not just synths in general, and not just news and press releases.  The focus is on the individual synths that have existed throughout history, the technology behind them, and the lives they lead with their odd owners, myself included.  :)  Yes it is about the gear, their makers, and their players.  It has always been my opinion that synths in general have a tendency to be undervalued. Compared to say collectible guitars, they are often discarded and devalued in favor of next year's model, next year's technology.  It has always been my opinion that every synth has something of value to offer,  something specific and something unique that gives it its character. I built this site to showcase that.  This site is about the history of synths as their history unfolds - videos and images of synths being played and used, by both those that make them and those that play them.  Vintage synths being offered in the second hand market, being exchanged from one sonic explorer to the next. It really is a wondrous thing. Think of the magic synthesizers bring into your world. That is what this site is ultimately about.  Some posts may not seem to make sense now, but they will in time, because they will be a look back in time. A day in the life of a particular synthesizer.  I love analog and I love digital. I love all synths and this site celebrates that.

And now for a little reflection on the year. This year we had a total of 16678 posts including this one.  That comes out to roughly 45.69 posts a day.  Not a single day of the year went without a post.  So what dominated the synth year?  Mobile, modulars and a few dedicated hardware synths.

Hartmann VS

images via this auction.
"Neuron VS is a PC and MAC compatible application. The package includes Nuke - an ergonomic hardware controller, built of steady aluminum and attachable to the computer via the USB connector.

Neuron VS is basically built on the same sound engine like the Neuron Hardware Synthesizer. It is coming with a highly sophisticated graphical user interface that perfectly interacts with the hardware controller box. Neuron VS includes 2 Resynators, the Blender module, the Mod- and Slicer Module, a Silver Unit (Multimode Filter plus Time and Frequency Effect unit) and 7 ADSR Shapers (for more details see feature list). Compared to the Hardware Synthesizer, Model maker, Surround capabilities, 4 levels / 4 times Shapers, high-end Delay and Reverb (and - obviously - the beautiful, luxurious user interface of the Keyboard version) are not included.

Neuron VS ships with 300 sounds and 200 Models. Its sound and sound shaping capabilities are amazingly close to those of the Neuron Keyboard synthesizer. This instrument will meet the expectations of many musicians out there, that do not have the money to spend on a Keyboard version - or who simply want total integration of the Neuron into their virtual studio setup.

The Nuke Controller box
With the button you select, which of the Neuron VS Modules is being controlled by the stick:

* Resynator 1
* Resynator 2
* Silver

It is not possible to work on the settings of those Parameter groups without Nuke.

Nuke offers 4 freely definable endless knobs (encoders), that are being set on a third page of the Neuron VS software.

Nuke is a valuable piece of hardware, that was designed to perfectly fit in your hand. It is made of aluminum and offers exactly the same kind of stick controller and encoders you find on the Neuron keyboard. The hand rest is made of special soft synthetic material.

Nuke is included in the Neuron VS software package.

The Resynator Page
The Resynator page allows for the real time setting of all Resynators’ parameters. The Resynators give access to the very heart of a sound. Neuron VS features 2 Resynators - each capable of driving one Model.

Neuron VS comes with a huge variety of Models (ca. 300). The Resynators (and Silver) need , the hardware controller to drive the parameter sets represented by the two bubbles on this page (and the bubble on the silver page). All movements of Nuke’s stick can be recorded in real time and stored as part of a sound.

Additionally, Neuron VS includes 7 ADSR shapers, that are switched by simply clicking on one of the smaller icons.

The Blender offer 10 different settings to merge and mix Models or parts of Models together.

The Silver Page
Silver includes a very powerful multimode filter ( 24dB low pass, 12dB low pass, 6dB low pass, 6dB high pass and band pass) plus two multi effect units. Cutoff and Frequency are being controlled crosswise by the stick or one can use the scrollers to set the parameters separately.

The Frequency FX Module includes a high end EQ / Compressor, Distortion, Ring Modulator, Decimator and SP Warp Effects. The Time FX Module includes Stereo Spread, Left/Right Delay, Flanger, Phaser and Chorus Effects.

Silver includes a dedicated ADSR Shaper for the Filter. All Shapers can be set to Repeat Mode - adding one more very flexible cyclic effect.

Besides that, the silver page is the home of the Mod and the Slicer. Mod represents an LFO. Slicer is a Neuron exclusive Module that allows for cyclic “3 dimensional” modulations.

The Nuke Page
On this page of the software the setting of the freely definable endless knobs (encoders) is being managed. Select the parameter you want to control for each knob and store the setting together with the sound.

Features
* Innovative and award winning neural synthesis engine (template driven Multi-Component Particle Transform Synthesis with real time controllable synthesis model parameters, Artificial Neural Network controlled adaptive sound analysis for the parametric transformation of musical monophonic and polyphonic sounds)

Hartmann Neuron

Click here for images via this auction.

Details (apparently pulled from the Hartmann site which is still up, btw):
"Neuron's synthesis engine is powered by the technology found in neural networks (for more on this, see the section "Neural Networks"). It uses models as the basis for sound generation. In conceptual terms, these models are comparable to samples, and they are derived by analyzing audio samples. This means that in principle, any auditory event can provide the raw material for creating and processing sound in Neuron. It ships with some 100 of these models on its internal hard disk. Though this is a huge store of sound design resources, you are free to analyze audio resources (samples) of your own, using our proprietary ModelMaker software, and archive them in the form of user models. These models contain the actual sound as well as the parameter sets that were captured during neural analysis. Parameter sets are subdivided in up to three levels, and they may be manipulated via the resynators' sticks. That makes Neuron the first synthesizer offering dynamic parameter assignment tailored specifically to the sound that you select for processing. "

Hartmann Neurons For Sale

Update via the comments worth noting. But the keyboard version is just too damn sexy.

"We have been servicing them since we we're the U.S. Distributor for a while but only to our customers. But while there are still some spare parts around but some things there are not. So while the insides are essentially just a computer and a sound card you're still gonna have some problems depending on what knob/switch/display you break.

You should pick up a VS instead, they have almost almost every feature the hardware did and the controller is simple enough to probably be repaired by anybody. They were selling in Germany for like $150 for a while."

Title link takes you to shots pulled from this auction. Details below. Note that there are 10 available with a Buy it Now of $3,832.00. As usual, I no affiliation with this sale, just saving it for the archives of synth history... Via Melissa's Blog.

The Human Interface

The ergonomic design of many modern electronic music instruments comes courtesy of company founder Axel Hartmann's creative urges. His experiences with musicians and manufacturers flowed into the operating and handling principles that help make Neuron so special.

The Neuron's extraordinary user interface is a crucial feature alongside its innovative sound generation system. Our philosophy dictates that every Hartmann instrument is easy to understand and use, that it handles intuitively, and that makes discovering new technology fun. To live up to that promise, we were compelled to invent several new control features. The tactile experience of generating sound via Neuron is something entirely apart from what users have encountered with conventional synthesizers.

The control features feel like what they are - different, unprecedented. Powerful yet subtle sound-sculpting tools, they throw the window to a new and unexplored sonic vista wide open. Starting with great legacy sounds, the musician ventures forth on a quest for unknown sonic treats by cutting, tucking, snipping and sewing these time-tested sounds. He can do this with the delicate touch of a neurosurgeon or the harsh hand of a butcher. The intelligent Snapshot function lets him take pictures of every and any stop along his auditory journey. This lets him backtrack should he get lost or want to return to a "Kodak Moment".

All dynamic parameters are controlled via rotary encoders with an infinite control range. The displays and indicator panels provide direct visual reference to the settings for the current program even when switching sounds.
