How to do awesome arpeggios - Tangerine Dream style

video upload by Espen Kraft

"How to do arpeggios and arpeggiated parts in the style of 70s and 80s Tangerine Dream? Blend different time signatures, use a lot triplet and dotted delays and plenty of reverb. Play some arps by hand and use automated arps together. Mash it up, use your creativity!

If any of you uber-Tangerine Dream fans read this; this video is made to inspire some creativity. It's not meant as a remake of any TG track in particular. I know how obsessed die-hard fans can be with stuff presented online. I'm well aware of their modular setups and custom made hardware.

Bad Gear - It's really Bad?

video upload by AudioPilz

"Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Roland SH-4d. Is this groovebox and multitimbral synthesizer based on subtractive synthesis, wavetable, FM synthesis, ring modulation and vintage synths like the Roland SH-101 or Roland Juno-106 the missing link between synth and drum machine. Can it keep up with competitors like the Elektron Syntakt or Teenage Engineering OP-1? Does it play in the same league like the new Roland Jupiter-X or even its conceptual predecessor, the Roland SH-32? It's really Bad?

Advanced Synthesizer with Wavetable and Virtual Analog Engines, an Intuitive Sound Design Workflow, Expressive Hands-On Controls, Model Expansion Support, and More

Los Angeles, CA, Sept. 28, 2023 — Roland announces GAIA 2, an advanced synthesizer with a newly developed hybrid sound engine and a friendly panel layout that makes learning synthesis and exploring sound design easy and fun. Equipped with wavetable and virtual analog oscillators, interactive controls, 37 full-size keys, Model Expansion support, and other powerful features, GAIA 2 opens the door to an infinite universe of inspired creation.

GAIA 2’s diverse synthesis tools allow users to build familiar sounds and craft new voices never heard before. Reaching beyond previous designs, the wavetable oscillator can morph between multiple waveforms for everything from dramatic shifts to slowly evolving textures. Unique phase and shape modulation options are also available to distort waveforms and unleash cutting-edge textures with complex overtones. Complementing the wavetable oscillator are twin virtual analog oscillators, ready to reimagine past classics or sculpt the sounds of the future. From smooth tones reminiscent of vintage synths to edgy, biting leads to sci-fi soundscapes, GAIA 2 can do it.

GAIA 2 also supports Roland Model Expansions, which faithfully recreate iconic synthesizers from the company’s long history. With a dedicated button, users can instantly swap between the built-in sound engine and classics like the JUPITER-8 or JUNO-106. The SH-101 Model Expansion comes pre-installed, and many additional titles and accompanying Sound Packs are available on Roland Cloud.

GAIA 2’s logically organized panel encourages hands-on exploration and sonic discovery. The one-control-per-function layout and informative display enable instant programming without having to resort to creativity-killing menu diving. And with the streamlined knobs and white anodized aluminum panel, even the look is inspiring.

GAIA 2 features a touch-controlled Motional Pad that brings static sounds to life. Users can assign nearly any synth or effect parameter to each of the X/Y points and then morph between them by moving a finger on the pad. It’s also possible to record movements to create complex, modulated transformations.

The free-flowing sequencer in GAIA 2 lets users instantly capture their inspiration and realize their wildest visions. There’s also a cool Random Pattern feature to spark new ideas with spontaneous pattern creation.

GAIA 2 comes loaded with classic Roland effects to take sonic creations to the next level. Over 50 unique MFX types are available, plus a dedicated Chorus section for adding width and dimension. A powerful Reverb/Delay section features a new studio-grade Shimmer Reverb and many other high-quality effect types.

Via USB-C, GAIA 2 functions as an audio/MIDI interface for music production apps on a computer, smartphone, or tablet. The class-compliant connection is plug-and-play, with no driver installation needed. A USB Type-A port is also available for connecting a USB flash drive for data backup or a standard USB MIDI controller for extended operation.

GAIA 2 supports Roland Cloud Connect, an optional wireless adapter for browsing and downloading Roland Cloud content using a mobile device. A Roland Cloud Connect purchase also includes a year of Roland Cloud Pro membership with unlimited use of thousands of sounds, Model Expansions, and much more.

The optional CB-B37 Keyboard Bag for GAIA 2 provides durable, high-quality protection for the synthesizer while traveling and making music around town. This versatile bag also works with the JUPITER-Xm, legacy GAIA SH-01, and other 37-note keyboards.

Availability & Pricing

The Roland GAIA 2 is now available in the U.S. for $899.99.

Sound design comparisons - Roland Jupiter 6 vs Sequential Prophet 10 vs Roland JD-800

video upload by MIDERA

"For some reason I really wanted to do an experiment where I sit down with the Jupiter 6 and Prophet 10 and just explore how they sound as I go through the settings/parameters. At the end, I would ask myself - which one do I like best? And then I thought, why not add something completely different. So I did. I added the JD-800.

I wanted to keep the comparison consistent in one way: they would be routed (mono) through the Strymon El Cap and then given the same amount of reverb. So the only difference is what's going on in the synthesizer itself.

It feels like a bit of a failed experiment because 1) their levels were hard to control (it's not patch comparisons so I don't think "X sounds better than Y because it's louder), so hopefully that's ok, and 2) they all kind of sound good in completely different ways.

My actual EXPERIENCE was that I much preferred using the Prophet 10. I think I like the sounds from the Jupiter 6 or JD800 best, but the JD800 has advantages (plethora of different waveforms) and disadvantages (no sync or cross mod).

So what did I learn from this endeavor? Probably nothing, but I haven't actually sat to listen to my work, so I don't actually know yet."

KRK for Roland JP-08

video upload by NatLife Sounds

"Buy Link: https://natlifesounds.com/product/krk...

Delay - internal JP-08 delay.
Reverb - from Logic Pro X.

We glad to present you a new soundbank for Roland JP-08 – KRK.

It is a continue Trance line of the first sounndbank for JP-08 but with a special taste of Adriatic Island – KRK, after whom this bank got its name.

This soundset was packed with a 16 Sequences and 64 presets. The sounds are perfect for any style of Electronic Music and not only. It’s a pack of Leads, Plucks, Pads, FX’s and you can find here even big Brass sounds, which sound warmer than you can imagine from a 4 Voices synthesizer. A bunch number of sounds using all the LFO‘s possibilities, so you can get a feeling that it’s more than just a one LFO in it. in almost every sound you will feel the spirit of that very famous Jupiter-8 from Roland.

All the presets using only internal Delay, so you hear in demo what you get.

So, in final you get:

64 Roland JP-08 Patches
16 Sequences"

Jupiter-X / Juno-X: Beyond the vintage models

video upload by Alex Ball

Enjoy the intro.

"Last year I shot some bonus footage of the Jupiter-X and Juno-X whilst they were both in the studio to answer two questions I kept getting about them:

1) What's the difference between the Juno-X and Jupiter-X?
2) Can they make their own sounds that aren't recreations of old sounds?

In this video I answer those questions in a practical way.

Every way the CS70M is BETTER than the Yamaha CS-80!

video upload by Vulture Culture

"Many people do not know about this rare, vintage synthesizer, the "update" to the greatest analog polysynth of all time. The CS70m was Yamaha's last chance to capture the analog synthesizer market before they went all in with digital synthesizers like the DX7. Today there are less than 1,000 that have survived. I think this synthesizer should be considered as legendary as the Roland Jupiter 8, Juno 106, Sequential Prophet 5 and Oberheim OB-X. It's older sibling, the Yamaha CS-80, was championed by Vangelis, who wrote and performed the score to Blade Runner.

AMBIENT Roland SH-4d & Roland Jupiter-Xm

video upload by Alba Ecstasy

"Ambient Patches 👉 https://www.albaecstasy.ro

Not quite what I really wanted to produce today - I started to prepare a nice demo of the Roland SH-4d - but it turned to combining my new favourite synths: Roland Jupiter-Xm and Roland SH-4d into this track.

Putting these amazing synths together to create a space ambient Berlin School track was really nice and easy.
With both you can create on the fly and have really nice results!

Roland Jupiter-Xm provides pads, sequence 1, lead and drums.
Roland Sh-4d comes with the bass line and sequence 2.

No MIDI connection between them.
Some additional delay & reverb effects were added from Logic Pro X.

Name of the track: Iridium, from the 'Indigo, Iridium and the Cosmic Tree' album
