New Kaleidoscope Mini Desktop Synth Incoming

video uploads by Vadjuse

This one was spotted and sent in via Meska.

Playlist:

1. Teaser. Kaleidoscope mimics a blip blop machine.

2. Teaser 2. Kaleidoscope mimics a boom-tysch machine.
Some raw drums exploration.
3. Kaleidoscope. Reload Zone. Post-Apocalyptic Ambient.
In this video I experiment with the generative sequencer of the Kaleidoscope.

The pattern is relatively simple:

1. VCA1 (which means it belongs to track 1) works in a cyclic mode, i.e. it restarts itself.
2. With its end it starts VCA2 (which means it belongs to track 2).

3. VCA2 modulates the period of VCA1, and VCA1 modulates the period of VCA2 (fm synthesis at the rhythm level). Because of this, the length of the pattern wanders a little and creates a pleasant dynamic.

4. Modulation envelope 1 (MODENV1) also works in a cyclic mode and restarts itself, but with a completely different period than the VCA1. This creates an additional rhythmic layer in the overall sound.

5. MODENV1 modulates the wavefolder level of track 2.

6. Track 1 modulates the frequency of track 2, and track 2 modulates the frequency of track 1.

7. All this is seasoned with a comb-filter in delay mode, which creates another rhythmic layer.

The presets for track 1 and track 2 used in this video can be downloaded and loaded into your Kaleidoscope. After the release of the synthesizer, I will publish these and other patches so that you can play with them and modify them yourself.
4. Kaleidoscope. Hypnotic Resonance
On the home stretch, Kaleidoscope will be released soon.
On the video new PCB version with
typeC plug
4 channel DAC
improved encoder filtering section

In this video I experiment with a relatively simple patch.
The cyclic modulator changes the symmetry of the triangle wave. From a symmetrical triangle to a saw. This changes the spectrum.

As a result, the filter resonance periodically amplifies individual harmonics. The filter frequency is modulated by the volume envelope.

Since the filter frequencies can be precisely tuned to the MIDI note frequencies, the modulation results in all the natural harmonics of only one octave being cycled through. This makes it seem like there is some kind of sequence in the patch, although in fact there is none - it's just a native process.

At high resonance values, the signal is overloaded in the filter feedback circuit.

The signal is also additionally overloaded in the overdrive block.

All this gets into the comb filter, which works as an echo.

I've been glued to this patch for about a day, which makes me a little sick of it, but I still like it.

Tips & Tricks: Class Compliant USB Audio Interface with Elektron Drum Machines and Synths

video upload by Group Technologies Australasia

"Did you know that almost all Elektron devices* are USB class compliant? That means you can easily send audio out from your Elektron drum machine or synth directly to your Apple iOS or OS device and record proper line-level audio. This is great for quickly capturing that beat you've been working on and sharing it with friends or for posting on social media like a pro. In this video we look at how easy it is to plug and record audio to your Apple device with no additional drivers, app or software required! It's also possible to send any incoming audio from external sources routed through to your Elektron box, out to USB as well. In this video we jam the Elektron Syntakt together with a vintage Roland TR-606. The TR-606 audio is running into the external input of the Syntakt and all the sounds from both devices are being routed directly via USB audio into an iPhone.

Elektron firmware provides options for choosing what audio source output you want to route to your iOS device. The default setting will send the main stereo outs, whereby the mix of all your tracks inside your Elektron box is sent out via USB. Alternatively, there are options to choose a specific track out via USB; perhaps you just want to send your sick bass line without the kick drum — yes you can! The Analog Heat+FX also has the option to process incoming audio from USB, offering a two-way audio solution that has many creative applications. Your iPhone or iPad microphone might be good at recording your voice, but they're not great at capturing and representing your latest beat creation.

Arp Omni 2 with external ensemble FX (Wersivoice)

video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"if you've watched some of my videos you know I love string synth and string ensemble FX, I collect the former and build the latter.
I wanted to test how an Arp Omni would sound through a Wersivoice unit.
To do so I used the synth section of the Omni and plugged it to the Wersivoice, since the waveshape of the synth and string section of the Omni are basically the same.
In the first part I A/B the 2 chorus sounds by using a foot switch. It's quite obvious which is what so you'll figure out. As you'll probalbly find out the Omni built-in chorus sounds mellower than the Wersi, which is brighter and harsher. Not better or worse, just a different taste. It's worthy to note the Omni 2 chorus is build around Reticon SAD512 BBD chipsets (so is the Moog Opus 3 btw) and this Wersivoice is build around Panasonic MN3004 (the same used in Roland Jupiter 4 / VP330). Early Wersivoice units (FM76s and WV3 / WV7 pcb) are build around philips TDA1022 and sound mellower. I'll make a demo with the Arp and one of those at some point.

Then in the second part this is when it gets really interesting... Since we use the synth section of the Omni we have access to a full ADSR enveloppe and a resonant filter with control over it by enveloppe, LFO and external pedal.
And this allow for a much wider sound palette.
Thanks to the enveloppe shaping the VCA you can get some string articulations that are not possible in the string section since it has a ASR enveloppe (meaning you can control Attack and Release but there is no Decay and Sustain is always maxed). Great for swell, staccatos, stabs etc
It's also worth mentionning that the release of the ADST (synth) enveloppe is tied to the string section release, this one being the "master" or final release. If you want a long release on the ADSR you have to bring the String release up. This is not an issue, it is the way it is designed and that's one of the drawback of paraphonic design.
And then comes the resonant filter... with it you can shape the tone of the sound to almost choiry / vocaly ones. And you can bring this more lively by using the LFO or an external pedal to open the filter like I did at some point.
And of course you can always run the string section through the Wersivoice, which I did in the last part. And that, when the builtin Omni's chorus is set to phaser mode gives a very thick (sick ?) sound.
Hope you like the video.

Nord Electro 6D Can Do Vintage & Lofi Synth [Sounds Only Demo] |No Talking|

video upload by gstormelectro

"Audio + Video by G-Storm Electro c. 2023

The Nord Electro 6D. It's not just for organ/piano/EP sounds. There's a plethora of sick vintage + esoteric + obscure + lofi synth sounds in the Synthesizer Engine. Yes, it's not actually synthesis but rather samples. But IMHO very very nice samples very well done. A lot of these samples aren't even assigned in the factory presets! It's up to you to load them up and give them a whirl. And there's even more to download into the synth on the Nord website. Today my playing is not really up to par for me, but hopefuly you'll still enjoy auditioning these tasty sounds.

Behringer Cat synth - unboxing and first sounds (no talk)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Yes, it's my first Cat video, the Behringer Cat, which recently plunged in price by almost 50 per cent. It cost me substantially less than the Nemesis delay which it's paired with here. It's a bargain and since there was zero chance of me ever buying (and hoping to maintain) a 50-year-old original Cat it seemed a fair deal. Strangely enough I'd been looking at this synth for a month or so specifically because of two features: It's paraphonic with separate VCO 1 & 2 CV inputs; and it has beautifully raw cross-modulation. (More with the CV inputs in a later video)

This is also my first unboxing video (a challenge accepted from Berin) but I couldn't bring myself to utter lines like "here is the power supply, oh and a lovely sticker" so there's some Cat sounds over the top. There's a lot of dischordant sounds in this demo but that's what I bought it for. Of course it can do all the usual things too. The Nemesis delay is slopped over the top of everything for which I offer no apology since it sounds so much better that way, covers up sloppy playing, and makes filter twiddlings interesting. But if anyone really wants 100% raw stuff let me know. As usual there is no post-production audio trickery, the path is Cat to Nemesis to you. And for any Cat veterans out there I'm sure various settings were either redundant or bypassed (I couldn't work out the second envelope), but it's early days so live and learn. It was fun not needing to even look in a manual though, it's there in front of you. One thing that did strike me was how powerful the resonance is. I've been spoiled by the no-risk DB-01 Polivoks resonance which happily goes to 100 per cent anytime. Not here!

Visuals are AI-generated images made using Stable Diffusion. Being the creative type I came up with my very own set of AI word prompts, which I think makes me "lead visual artist, SFX supervisor and CGI chief designer".

Nelasma - "Crushed" - Dramatic Orchestral Melodic Techno - Modular Synth Live Jam - DFAM

video upload by Nelasma

"Oh my I did it again this weekend and now I'm coughing around again... sigh... at least its not as bad as three weeks ago... tho I wanna have fun again without getting sick hahaha... A-NY-WAY!

I still managed to get together some kinda orchestral vibe techno jam for you good people! Actually wanted to finally make DFAM the main actor but well.. while playing around I made those sweet stabs on the ensemble oscillator and that inspired me for the rest of the jam.

Like in the last jam I wanted to experiment more with the delay and used some bit crushing algorithm from nautilus. Sounds kinda broken sometimes but fits the vibes and the state of my immune system.

Unto the end I managed to dial in some phase cancellation of the Bassdrum which is normally a no-no for me but well.. It was still ok and since it was clocked it still was kinda rhythmical.

So yeah a little jam with broken sickness vibes haha..
And hopefully I'm back at my 100% soon.

As always raw into OBS, no post processing, intentions and mistakes ;)

Timeline:
00:00 Start/Violin Broken Delay Rise

RS042 M-Audio Venom: The Bad Guy

video upload by rejected synths

"It one of storytelling's oldest tricks, the bad guy that turn out to be the good guy. From Dickens’ Ebeneezer Scrooge to Jane Austen‘s Mr Darcy, from J.K Rowling‘s Snape to (who ever came up with him!?) Jonny Lawrence from Corbra Kai, the tough guys aren‘t as tough in the end and often the bad reputation they carry isn‘t really their own fault.

So, will a synth that is both notorious for being little more than a dub step noise machine and a cheaply built and quickly abandoned piece of glossy white plastic actually turn out to be the hero of the story?

It very much depends on who tells the story here, as M-Audio‘s Venom clearly has it‘s strengths if you can overlook the questionable design decisions made during it‘s inception. Like the hard to read grey on grey lettering or the fact that M-Audio thinks it totally ok for a stand alone hardware synth to heavily rely on a software editor that requires a PCor Mac to be able to utilize most of its extensive set synth engine features. Even the Virtual Analog Synthesizer claim that is prominently featured on the synth itself, it a bit of a hoax, as the Venom basically is just a souped up Rompler running on Amtel‘s Dream series ICs that were also found in PC sound cards and Karaoke Machines in the late 90s and early 2000s.

If you ignore these shortcomings and manage to get the editor running, you might be surprised of what the Venom can actually do. Apart from all the obvious dirty and distorted stuff, a lot can be achieved with the synth engine. Also as it was designed as an all in one solution for music beginners, you can even use it to record and process other instruments and even your own voice (vocoder anyone?).

Last but not least, the Venom might be pretty much the only synth whose price tag doesn‘t seem to have skyrocketed during the pandemic, here in Europe, you can still regularity find one for around 100€!

Curious? Then go ahead and press play!"

Dave Smith Was an Ironman Triathlete

In case you missed it in this post, Roger Linn noted Dave Smith was "an avid athelete, cyclist and triathlete. He actually participated in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon in his younger years..."

@birdkids reminded me of an article on the development of the Prophet VS archived on the WaybackMachine. In it, Chris Meyer mentions Dave was in Hawaii prepping for the tournament during that time. I thought it was interesting and worth sharing. I captured it below.

"Date: Wed, 15 Jan 1997 07:55:41 -0800

MIME-Version: 1.0
Subject: Birth of the Prophet VS

I thought the following might be of interest to you. Xrystal
_____________________________________________________________________

The Birth of the Prophet VS

By Chris Meyer, ex-employee of Sequential Circuits

reprinted from the VS WaveWrangler User Guide by permission of Interval Music Systems,
©1991 Interval Music Systems.

It all started somewhere in 1985. We were still working on the Prophet 2000 sampler,
and as resident historian (in other words, I had the most magazines and manuals) another
engineer was asking me to explain how various instruments performed crossfades. I had
finished discussing the Fairlight, and had moved on the PPG - explaining its wavetables,
and the ability for it to scan a group of waves first in one direction and then back again,
While I was scrawling this back and forth motion in my notebook, suddenly a little twinge
went off in the back of my head, and myhand drew the next line arcing down the page.. and the
concept of crossfading beween waves in two dimension, not just one, was born.

Yamaha Sk-50D w/ Hard Case

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is a grail of a synth right here. The Yamaha Sk series are a masterpiece where a poly synth, mono synth, organ, and strings combine on one machine. I have created so many sick songs on this synth and have to part with it due to relocation. There are scratches on the front panel paint but given it’s from the late 70s it’s in great condition. All of the components still work, only issue is a bad slider for the lower organ volume so it is stuck at one volume setting. It is an easy fix, I will ship at the buyers expense. This synth comes with original 4 legs and custom made road case from encore cases so shipping will be no problem."

Nerding out with Kawai K5 and Strymon TimeLine Delay [demo]

video upload by State Shirt

"You'll never believe what we found sitting on the curb in our neighborhood a few months back. This fully operational Kawai K5 digital synth! A neighbor put a few keyboards on the curb and posted an ad to Craigslist. I guess the original owner got sick of additive synthesis. So we took the Kawai home and fired it up. It's a digital synth made in 1987, and seems to have it's own unique sound. I decided to plug it into my trusty Strymon TimeLine delay and see if I could come up with a few sounds and some song ideas for my new album. After many months, I finally completed the demo of the two together. :)"

Nostalgia 1989: Yamaha SY77 [demo]

video upload by State Shirt State Shirt

Chameleons intro.

"I've lusted after the Yamaha SY77 ever since I was a kid, but could never afford one until recently. I just picked this one up on eBay. It's beat up and a few things are broken, but for $300 it was a steal. I hadn't thought about this instrument for years—and it's weird finally being able to play through it considering how much I wanted one as a kid.

Demo at the end features Strymon BigSky and Strymon Deco. Signal chain is SY77 » BigSky » Deco. Putting Deco last in chain gives a unique vibe—the Tape Saturation really mellows out the rough edges, and the Doubletracker can add some nice 80s sounding modulation. I didn't spend any time writing any patches for the SY77—I just used some factory sounds and whatever the previous owner had already saved."

6 reason for making Italo Disco Old School | Breakdown & Tutorial (sort of) included

video by Espen Kraft

"I'm currently working on my 4th version of 'Midnight Drive' and I wanted this one to have strong elements of 'Italo Disco'. Not necessarily octave bass and vocals this time, but a more walking bass feel with a basic drum groove and poly brass.

And my 6 reasons for doing this version in an Italo Disco style, is these 6 pieces of classic gear, much used in Italo Disco back in the day:

E-MU Drumulator - a very much used drum machine in Italo Disco
Roland Juno-106 for bass - sequenced from the Yamaha QX1
Crumar BIT01 - classic Italian synth with great brass sounds
Roland Alpha Juno 2 - Bells
Roland Jupiter-8 - phasy pads
Emax II - samples saxophone (ideally I would use the E-MU Emulator II, but it is sick at the moment)

Support this channel on Patreon:
https://www.patreon.com/espenkraft

The QX1 is programmed with two different banks (patterns), one playing the intro/vers-part and one playing the chorus-part. These two patterns alternate in repeat-mode.
I've chained these two parts together in "chain-mode" inside the QX1.
The QX1 is setup for MIDI sync, necessary to be able to add overdubs in time. The 8th MIDI out of the QX1 goes to the Sequential TOM drum machine, set to receive external clock. This is necessary as the Drumulator has no MIDI in. The TOM outputs a clock signal which is fed into the clock input of the Drumulator. When this is set to external sync, the Drumulator is now clocking perfectly to the DAW, through the QX1 and TOM. Somewhat complicated, but it works!

I use Valhalla VintageVerb for the reverbs here, but all the sounds has gone through various stages of processing like compressors, limiters, EQ and outboards.

The finished commercial song will be somewhat enhanced and produced more, but I'm aiming for a simple raw finished sound, not TOO glossy. Once finished I will release it here.

In the thumbnail image I'm holding a copy of the vinyl single "I want you" by Gary Low, one of my favorite Italo Disco artists and this single is a big part of my inspiration for doing this track I'm working on. Even if it's really not very similar."

So, why did I buy this synth? I don’t know. It wasn’t a great reason. I own a JX3P, and have been sick of trying to figure out how to hook it up with my gear. It only works via OMNI mode (listens to every midi channel). This forced me to use other sequencers that I didn’t want to use. I could upgrade to KIWI, but that would cost me well over half the cost of a S8, so I decided to try that. Good news is - they sound identical (except the JX3P PWM goes through zero and the S8 does not).

So, I had the Juno 106 plug out in it and found I didn’t like it. This is no surprise. I had a 106 and didn’t like it, back in 2012. Of course, I wish I hadn’t sold it, because I sold it for $350. Ouch. However, you have to remember back then there weren’t replacement chips, only the acetone fix, with reports that it didn’t always work. So I sold it. Anyway, I replaced it with the Juno 60 plug out and wow it sounds really good. Way better than the 106 plug out, which I thought was exceedingly boring.

Everyone talks about how great the System 8 and 106 plug out are, but I actually like the Jupiter 8 and JX Plug outs the most. The S8 is good too, but now that I have the J60 in there, I honestly think they’re all really good. I think maybe people are just so used to Juno’s that they just don’t explore the JX or Jupiter 8? I’m not sure. Or maybe it’s that people scan presets? I never use them. I start from scratch. Every preset in this thing just sounds too processed and I don’t like it.

Now I sorta wish I’d have picked up a J6 or J60, but the prices have skyrocketed so I guess so long and thanks for all the fish. I’ll keep this green hitchhiker from another sector of the galaxy. It’s ugly, but it’s like a towel - you may automatically assume that I am also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc."
