"After a long Hiatus, trying to heal up from neck and back injuries that have greatly limited my studio time, I bring you my favorite piece by Sergei Prokofiev, The Love for Three Oranges Op. 33 March. I performed this using only the awesome Oberheim OBX8. At first I thought that I would whiz right through this, but putting all the arrangement down was much more complicated than I originally thought. I believe that I got 99% of the notes correct, but you be the judge. The reference track that I used as a guide for my arrangement was this pipe organ version: [below]

"A good friend of mine recently told me that he thought that the 3rd Wave didn't have enough variety of sounds to be one's 'only synth'. In my opinion, I think that he is wrong. I decided to create some multi-track sequences using ONLY the 3rd Wave's sounds and built-in FX to show him that indeed the 3rd wave had a very versatile sound. I only used EQ'ing with Cubase when I created the tracks. I hope that you all enjoy my efforts. :)"

Flash Gordon Soundtrack clips performed on the Oberheim OB-X8

I've always loved the movie Flash Gordon from good old 1980. Since Queen performed all the synth parts for that soundtrack on the Oberheim OB-X, I thought that it would be fitting to do my own version of some of the tracks with my new Oberheim OB-X8. I didn't try to recreate every piece spot on, but definitely wanted the Oberheim OB-X spirit in there. I hope that you enjoy my effort. :) Show less

Van Halen 1984 performed on the Oberheim OB X8

1984 was one of my favorite synth pieces from the 1980's, so I just had to recreate it on my new Oberheim OB-X8. I hope that you enjoy it.

Oberheim OB-X8 demo - "The Quasar's Sorrow" - also featuring the OTO BAM Reverb Processor

I originally wrote this track in 2012 for my TRANSCENDENCE album. Now 10 years later, the OB-X8 was the perfect synth the recreate it using only one synth. 100% of the track is using the OB-X8 (I used 12 patches multitracked using Cubase 12) and the only FX used was from my new BAM reverb processor by OTO Machines.

Radio Gaga instrumental cover featuring the Oberheim OB-X8

As a teen in 1984, Radio Gaga was my favorite song from the era......and still is to this day. It's pure music magic to my ears. I thought that I'd rearrange it using the Oberheim OB-X8 for all the synth/keyboard parts in the song.

"Every time I watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, one of my favorite movies of all time, I still get the chills when I hear that incredible piece by Richard Strauss, Also sprach Zarathustra. I just realized that after owning the Prophet 10 for over 1 year now, I still hadn't done a Prophet 10 only track with it yet, so I think that Also sprach Zarathustra was a great choice to rectify that."

"I wrote this track back in 1990 while serving in the US Army. For the last 10 years or so I've wanted an excuse to recreate it, and now with my shiny new blue 3rd Wave, I thought now was a good time.

Other than the orchestral percussion, the track is 100% from the 3rd Wave, including the FX."

"Tonight Tonight Tonight by Genesis is one of my favorite tracks from my teenage years in the 80's, so I knew I'd eventually have to cover it. This track was definitely the most work I've ever done for an 80's cover for sure. The hardware synths that I used for the piece are by Sequential, the Pro 3, Prophet 12, OB-6, and the Prophet 10 rev4. I also used The River by Baloran, a 002 by Modal Electronics, a Quantum by Waldorf, and finally the Super 6 by Udo Audio.

This cover took me several months, as my left arm is still not functioning right, and with daily pain still due to my Fed-Ex truck versus Sean accident back in late 2019, but luckily I'm leaning somewhat to work through the pain and discomfort...although more slowly than before unfortunately."

Modal 002 review & sound demo

"Modal Electronics review, going through and sound demo.

The Modulus 002 was the first synthesizer from the new established company Modal Electronics from Bristol, UK in 2015. The frist batches named Modulus 002. Because of legal issues the name changed to Modal 002.

It was developed mainly by Paula Maddox, who wanted to set the spirit oft he PPG wave in the next century. The Modal 002 uses NCO oscillators, which have a variable sample rate and sound more alive than DSP. Beside that the Signal Path ist full analog alongside with a marvelous sounding ladder filter.

Because of bad marketing and a very steep price the Modal 002 was not very successful when relaunched. Also there were a lot of bugs in the software and some audio issues which caused a bad publicity in forums. Meanwhile the 002 is grown up, the last big update was relaunched in 2019.

For me the 002 is the real sucessor of the PPG wave, it really sounds astonishing. It is one of the best hybrid synthesizers which have been ever bulit. This is my opinion. Unfortunately you can’t get this synth new from Modal Electronics, just on the used market from time to time.

I recorded the 002 directly with two audio jacks in a stereo track into my interface. There is no mastering, external FX and compression. In some patches you can listen to internal FX. The patches I used I got from a great youtube fellow, Sean Christopher Dockery (Quantum 7 on gearslutz). Thank you very much, Sean for those great patches.

The first 15 minutes of this video I go through most functions and parameters. In the second part beginning from 15:20​ I play a bunch of sounds, first mostly pads, later on leads, basses, bells and organ style sounds.

"Hello eveyone! It's been over 2 weeks since my last video, but due to unfortunately going through some depressing Carpal Tunnel issues, performing and even using my PC and music gear has been increasingly difficult. Hopefully the 2 weeks away are worth the wait because I am very happy to have the bassist for Dishwalla, Scot Alexander, joining me at bringing you a cover of New Order's 'Blue Monday' from 1983. Scot performers the iconic bassline from the track as well as providing the vocals. Even at the cost of looking a little crippled with my wrist/hand/fingers issues I decided that I should finally record myself playing my various synths for the track and am very happy on how both the track and the video came out.

I hope that you all enjoy this cover as much as we had in creating it."

"Oh how I loved this song and album (Real Life's Heartland) back in the 80's as a teenager, and Send Me An Angel has to be in my top ten pop songs of that entire decade. In fact, I recommend that you buy Heartland if you love this song. Needless to say, I've always wanted to cover this piece and finally got around to it. For synth bass duties I used my Sequential Pro 3 and for everything else synth I used my beloved Oberheim OB-8 which did a fantastic job recreating those 80's synth patches. For drums and guitars I used NI's Kontakt and Battery.

A big thank you to Tim Murphy for providing the lead vocals. Until this cover, Tim has not sang for over 20 years, but with a little coaching from my wife gave us a great performance IMO. Also thank you to my wife, Ann Marie, for providing the "Angel" vocals. I provided additional bass vocals underneath the chorus and 2nd verse.....which luckily for you the listeners isn't too loud. LOL"

"You know I just HAD to do a cover of this classic synth awesomeness, "Axel F" by the legendary Harold Faltermeyer.

The Baloran the River analog synth was used for the very memorable intro lead line, and the Sequential Pro 3 analog synth was used for the iconic bass line. For the tracks Yamaha DX7 parts I used the FM section of the Yamaha Montage....which is essentially a super DX7. Finally, for the percussion I used Aly James Labs awesome LM-1 which faithfully IMO recreated the Linn Drum LM-2 pretty spot-on that was originally used in the track."

Doctor Who Theme performed on the Moog Subsequent 37 Synthesizer (vintage 70's version)

"A year ago I did this famous synth piece on a Moog One, but decided to recreate....with even a more vintage feel (hopefully) with my Moog Subsequent 37....which is one of my favorite mono synths of all time. Every sound on the track is pure Sub 37 with only reverb and delay FX added, and was multi-tracked using Cubase 10.5 Pro.

From Eikipedias- 'Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The program depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called "the Doctor", an extraterrestrial being, to all appearances human, from the planet Gallifrey. "I have always loved Harold Faltermyer's music from The Running Man, so I took out a Novation Summit and thought I'd have a go at it in recreating some of my favorite pieces from the soundtrack. The only non-Summit sounds in the 3 parts is the percussion.

The Running Man is a 1987 American dystopian action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, María Conchita Alonso, Richard Dawson, Yaphet Kotto, and Jesse Ventura. It is very loosely based on the 1982 novel of the same title written by Stephen King and published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. The film's story, set in a dystopian United States between 2017 and 2019, is about a television show called The Running Man, where convicted criminal "runners" must escape death at the hands of professional killers."

Mike Olfield's Tubular Bells (Theme from The Exorcist) performed on the Roland System 8 synthesizer

"Mike Oldfield's brilliant Tubular Bells album, released in 1973 was pure music genius in mine and many others opinions. The intro to part 1 was especially a favorite of mine and others.

Tubular Bells is the debut studio album by English multi-instrumentalist, composer and songwriter Mike Oldfield, released on 25 May 1973 as the first album on Virgin Records. Oldfield, then 19 years old, played almost all the instruments on the mostly instrumental album. The album initially sold slowly, but gained worldwide attention in December 1973 when its opening theme was used for the soundtrack to the horror film The Exorcist (1973). This led to a surge in sales which increased Oldfield's profile and played an important part in the growth of the Virgin Group. It stayed in the top ten of the UK Albums Chart for one year from March 1974, during which it reached number one for one week. It peaked at number three on the US Billboard 200, and reached the top position in Canada and Australia. The album has sold over 2.7 million copies in the UK and an estimated 15 million worldwide.

I did this arrangement on the Roland System 8 and multitracked to Cubase 10 Pro. I tried my best to stay true to the original 1973 version and the System 8 was the perfect choice for the task."

"It's October, so I thought some classic synth horror movie soundtrack music was in order, so I present to you John Carpenter's iconic Halloween soundtrack music.

John Howard Carpenter is an American filmmaker, screenwriter and composer. Although Carpenter has worked with various movie genres, he is associated most commonly with horror, action, and science fiction films of the 1970s and 1980s....including 1978's classic Halloween and its subsequent sequels.

These pieces were multitracked to Cubase entirely from the OB6. I did use some Valhalla reverb though, as I do love their reverbs."

"If you haven't seen either of the 2 Gremlins movies from the mid-late 80's, go and see them - great fun! I have always loved Jerry Goldsmith's brilliant score for both of the Gremlins movies, especially the main theme. The Modal Electronics 002 synthesizer was the perfect choice to recreate that theme. Every sound is from the 002, including the percussion. The track was multi-track recorded into Steinberg's Cubase 10 where reverb and delay by Valhalla DSP (https://valhalladsp.com/) was added to complete the song."

"I've always LOVED this piece ever since I first heard it in 1982.

Taco Ockerse, known as Taco, is an Indonesian-born Dutch singer and entertainer who started his career in Germany. Taco released his first single, 'Puttin' On the Ritz' in 1982 and his version of the song also had pieces of other Irving Berlin songs.

The only synth used for this track was the mighty Baloran the River. The Behringer VC340 vocoder was used to get my wife's vocals into the piece. We also decided to put her 'normal' un-vocoded voice into the final 1/3 of the song to give it a more organic feel. NI's Maschine was used for the percussion and all tracks were recorded into and mixed/mastered with Cubase 10 Pro."
