Upcoming Performances and Release by Todd Barton

via supporting member, Todd Barton:

"April is filling up beginning with the recent release of Softube.com’s Buchla 296e Spectral Processor plugin for their Modular platform.

I was lucky enough to do a 10 part video series overview/tutorial of the amazing Spectral Processor. [posted here]

Bruce Bayard and I, known as Control Voltage Therapy are looking forward to joining our friends Caballito Negro: Terry Longshore & Tessa Brinckman this Friday, April 12 at 7 pm at the Schneider Museum of Art as part of the Ashland Independent Film Festival’s celebration which included a video by Bruce which we will perform with. More details here.

And on Thursday, April 18 I will be performing an improvised solo set as part of the UCSB’s CREATE concert in Santa Barbara. I’m delighted and honored to have be invited by one of my guiding lights, Curtis Road’s. More details here.

Upcoming in May: a simultaneous rerelease from https://flyingmoonlight.bandcamp.com/music of my 2008 solo shakuhachi album, Ro and a sample reel from that album for the MakeNoise Morphagene available from freesound.org"

Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator Comes to Software

Published on Sep 27, 2017 Published on Sep 27, 2017

"Get your free 20-day trial license here: http://softu.be/buchla_259e

✮ Buchla 259e is the first ever officially licensed Buchla plug-in. The equally unique and desirable dual oscillator—with a truly twisted circuitry—is available as an expansion to Softube's Modular ✮"

"The Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator plug-in for Modular features all the digital waveshaping, aliasing noise and foldover frequencies of the original hardware. Enjoy the self-modifying, screeching, snarling responses from the original’s downright odd inner workings. The 259e is a unique addition to the Modular ecosystem.

'Coming from a staunch, obsessive analog Buchla tradition I was skeptical about a virtual 259e. But Softube has knocked it out of the park.'

Todd Barton, Buchla Legend

What Is a Twisted Waveform Generator Anyways?
The 259e consists of two separate oscillators—Principal and Modulation—where Modulation can be used either to modulate the Principal oscillator or as a separate generator of audible notes. Furthermore, the sine wave generated by the Principal oscillator is simultaneously applied to two of the eight available waveshape tables. A morph voltage pans between the two tables and a warp voltage varies the amplitude of the sinusoidal (driving) waveform. Both these functions can be modulated by the Modulation oscillator.

'Three years ago I purchased a Buchla Easel and it really changed the way I compose my music. The Softube Buchla 259e makes me not miss my Easel too much while travelling.'

Andreas Tilliander, Producer, DJ, remixer and artist.

Here's Where it Gets Really Twisted
Three of the waveshape tables are actually not tables in the classical sense—they are simply portions of the 259e operating program, full of unpredictable noise and frequent silences. This is the innovative Mem Skew mode, possibly the most unique feature of the Buchla 259e. When these tables are selected, the FM controls are re-assigned to table scanning functions and the FM inputs become table modulators.

To sum it up, while the Buchla 259e can certainly be used for more traditional sounds, it excels at creating otherworldly twisted digital sonic landscapes. Which is why it is one of the most coveted synth modules on the market.

Softube launches Doepfer A-101-2 Vactrol LPG low pass gate module for Modular

"LINKĂ–PING, SWEDEN: high-end plug-in specialist Softube is proud to launch Doepfer A-101-2 Vactrol LPG — a plug- in version of Doepfer’s modernized take on the Buchla LPG (Low Pass Gate) concept, complete with clever and creative additions — as a new module for its perennially popular Modular software synth as of April 5...

Ever since its invention by Don Buchla, the LPG has been heralded for an ability to add a lifelike and organic response and textures to modular synth patches. With its A-101-2 Vactrol LPG, Eurorack instigator Doepfer took the concept a step further, adding a resonance filter for further sonic treatment. Today, thanks to Softube’s plug-in version for Modular, the module is available for any music creator that prefers working in the software realm.

As implied by name, Doepfer’s hardware LPG modules are based on vactrols — just like opto-compressors. The response time of these can vary wildly, which is all part of the LPG charm. Softube’s plug-in version of Doepfer’s design adds a Vact. switch, which was not part of the original hardware. This lets users switch between fast, medium, or slow (F/M/S) response times to cover the variation between individual analog units.

Doepfer’s A-101-2 Vactrol LPG hardware has been a longtime staple in the Eurorack world; now it’s a welcome addition to Softube’s Modular, the first truly expandable software modular system that looks, works, and sounds exactly like its hardware counterparts.

Doepfer A-101-2 Vactrol LPG is available now from Softube’s website and from authorized dealers around the world. The list price is $39, but it is available at an introductory price of $29 until April 30, 2017."
