Het Concreet Scanner 2023

video upload by

"In November 2023, I joined the team at Het Concreet in Tilburg, The Netherlands for a week long residency.

Het Concreet is a Dutch sound collective dedicated to finding new sounds by experimenting with analog electronic devices, magnetic tape and acoustics. Their analogue ambitions are rooted in their studio space, where they seek to find new meanings of sound by working with techniques that have become largely obsolete in today’s world. Their main instrument is magnetic tape, so I collaborated with my own analogue gear.

Radio Concrète was a a 12-hour broadcasting marathon that explored radio as a compositional tool and included contributions from Margherita Brillada, Veerle Pennock, Clara Byom, Bas van Druten, Nele Möller, Marieke van de Ven, Sharon Stewart, and was hosted by Steph Byrne.

During my stay, I fell in love with the Elektor Formant, a vintage Dutch synth handmade by Jos van Ras. In addition I used my SOMA Ether, Lore Mill Keyed Mosstone and Make Noise Strega synth. At the end of the broadcast, I made an intimate performance for a live and dedicated audience in collaboration with Het Concreet. This is an excerpt from that show."

SOMA Synths Terra - First Look at the Production Unit & Factory Tour

video upload by sonicstate

"We were invited to visit Soma Sound Machines at their Warsaw factory and while we were there were shown the pre production model of the Terra - the unique and very sensitive instrument . Terra features twelve extremely sensitive nodes (cant think of what else to call them!) for playing pitches, plus five for modifying the timbre, there are also 7 modifier knobs which globally effect the sound with two being dependent on the algorithm used.

Despite the wooden case, Terra is a digital sound source and has multiple models which are played rather like instruments, each model has 64 variations. As usual, its a rather off the wall concept, but thats what makes Soma the way it is. In practice, its incredibly sensitive and flexible - reminds us of the Eagan Matrix instruments found in the Haken Continuum or the Osmose.

The Terra will be in production very soon and making its way into the stores."

You can find additional Terra posts here.

VISIT: SOMA Sound Machines Factory in Warsaw

video upload by

"A couple of weeks back we were invited to visit the Soma Sound Machines factory in Warsaw, Poland. As well as a look at the first production models of the expressive Terra instrument, we got a look around their place.
PCBs and components are delivered here, the Through Hole hand soldered components are put onto the boards, any SMD (surface mount design) parts are sent off to the machine, units are tested put into the cases and shipped to distributors and customers. Lyra 8 , Kosmos, Pulsar-23 and Ether are made here and pretty soon the new Terra will be too.

Its actually a pretty cottage style industry, surprisingly small but also very efficient."

230122 - Jamuary 2023 - SmplTrek Ether Gaming

video upload by ChrisLody

"So here's an interesting thing to mess around with, sampling electromagnet noise from gaming devices with a Soma Ether and then making a tune with it.

Fairly self explanatory, apart from the fact that I had to mime to bits at the start where I am recording the sounds from various gaming devices. The Soma is super sensitive so it was picking up my lights and camera when I tried to record under them so I actually captured the audio stood in the middle of my studio in the dark.

The recordings were added to the SmplTrek then tuned and looped on the hardware itself. In the case of the DS I used the new auto chop to drum kit feature and then added a decay envelope to each slice, pitched them, panned them etc.

That's about it."

230103 - Jamuary 2023 - Sampling the Soma Ether with Liven Lofi-12

video upload by ChrisLody

"I used this Jamuary as a chance to experiment and find some samples that I can use in a soundtrack. So I've connected the Soma Ether which can turn radio waves and electrical interference into audio. Firstly I found an energy saving bulb with a nice shape-able pulse sound and my keyboard makes an interesting cloud of harmonics which turned out to be more useful than I first thought, it's used here as a drone. To add another element I pitched down a drum break until it just became a series of static like clicks.

There is a whole world of interesting noises to be found using the Soma and I knew it would be an interesting sample source. The Lofi-12 has made it nice and easy to test different things really quickly to see if they are useful."

3rd Wave FM Exploration

video upload by James Hagerman

"People have requested examples of the Linear and Non-linear FM capabilities. I also show off using Oscillators as LFO's and the Modulation Matrix shortcuts which I missed in my first exploration video.

00:00 - Intro
00:05 - Linear FM
02:27 - Mod Matrix Shortcuts
03:47 - Back to Linear FM
08:53 - Non-linear FM
12:39 - OSC as LFO
17:07 - Outro"

And:

3rd Wave controlled by SOMA Ether!

"While exploring the mod matrix on my @Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave, I discovered that the Audio Input mod source can accept signals from a SOMA Ether (https://somasynths.com/ether/) to create a wonderfully dynamic performance controller!

Shout out to whomever introduced me to the Ether at the NAMM 2022 SOMA booth earlier this year! I've had a lot of fun with it so far. I'm sorry I lost your business card. Please reach out if you see this!

The 3rd Wave is hiding a lot more under it's hood and this is only the first juicy bit I have in mind. I'll provide some shorter demo's showing how far the modulation matrix can bend this synth into strange places. Stay tuned!"

Lost Radiophonics

video upload by UncertainMusicCorps

"I was given the opportunity to sample audio from a very early example of a domestic radio receiver, built in around 1925, probably designed receive some of the earliest broadcasts by the BBC.

The recordings were made using both a contact mic on the radio headset and Soma Labs Ether 'anti-radio' (which felt kind of poetic).

I curated the recordings into usable samples, converted to SF2 format and imported into Wotja to generate the soundtrack to this short video.

Huge thanks to Lostwithel Museum for indulging me despite their bewilderment.

The joy and agony of music on vintage science equipment

HAINBACH

"In which I unbox a rare and beautiful piece of Danish science and engineering history and try to make music with it."

Funny at 7:29. Also makes you think the SOMA Ether could be an interesting alternative for some of these sounds. Anything can be an interesting sample source...

SOMA ETHER captures signals from trees!

Vlad Kreimer

"ETHER can capture signals from trees!

How it's possible? Let's me explain. As we know liquids inside trees are saline solutions. That means that they have some conductivity. Due to this, each tree becomes a weirdly shaped complex antenna with unique resonant and radio properties that captures its own unique bunch of radio signals! Please note that the result is highly dependent on what's in the air around your area. "

Never thought of trees as antennas before.

Radio From a Tree! Ether Adventures

Published on May 24, 2020 DECIMA1

"This video is not endorsed or sponsored by SOMA Laboratory.

From the SOMA Website about the ETHER V2:

ETHER is a kind of anti-radio. Instead of being tuned to a specific radio station, it receives all the interference and radiation that a traditional radio tries to eliminate in order to create a clean signal. It captures the radio waves “as is” from hertz to gigahertz because it doesn’t contain the tuned input circuit that filters out all frequencies except the narrow band of a specific station. This allows ETHER to perceive the invisible electromagnetic landscape that humans created unintentionally, making possible live electromagnetic field listening and recording.

As the inspiration for this project, I took the design of the very first radios (early 1900s) that had no tuning wheel. At this time there weren’t many radio stations, and all of them used Morse code. It was possible to distinguish each transmitter by ear, as each one had its own specific timbre or “voice”.

ETHER is pocket-sized (105x65x20mm) and light-weight (93g). It consumes very little power and runs on two AAA batteries. How long it can run on two batteries is unclear, because I still use the very same set of alkaline batteries I put into the first ETHER prototype 6 years ago! (yes the project has taken 6 years). All I can definitely say is that battery life is more than 300 hours if you using alkaline or lithium batteries.
