SoundForce Introduces SFC-OB Class-Compliant Boutique Oberheim OB-Style Hardware Controller

via SoundForce

"The SoundForce SFC-OB is a class-compliant boutique USB MIDI controller dedicated to OB-style synth plugins.

Features
With 37 rotary pots, 41 switches and 45 LEDs, you can finally control your virtual instrument in an instinctive and fun way. Create better synth sounds easier and improve your overall experience. A couple of extra “USER” controls are available to be freely assigned to additional parameters, for example Reverb size, Delay time, DAW FX sends levels. etc… The controller sends out standard MIDI cc messages and can be used with any software that is MIDI-mappable. A web-based control panel app allows the user to change the cc messages number for each control, change the MIDI channel and load the different plugin modes.

Plugin modes
Although the controller can be used with any software that can be mapped to MIDI CC messages, the SFC-OB has been specifically designed to work with the most popular OB-style synth plugins. Set the controller to the right plugin mode using the control panel. This will ensure that every switch on the SFC-OB is fitting the plugin used as well as possible. For more information, please check out the manual on the support page.

Build quality
The controller is assembled in The Netherlands with parts from Europe and Asia. It is built to last and withstand intense usage on tour and in the studio. SoundForce has an excellent track record for its controller line, with many units built and very little registered issues and repairs. The enclosure is made of 100% sheet metal and is manufactured by Grawart (http://www.grawart.pl). The case is made of bent steel and powder coated in black. The front panel is aluminum, also powder coated and screen printed with scratch-proof white and blue ink. Walnut wood side panels of 8mm thickness are fitted to both sides of the controller. On the electronics and firmware side, the controller is powered by the same STM32 Cortex-M micro-controller platform used successfully in previous products, insuring a very high level of compatibility with different computers and DAWs. The devices have been even used successfully with iPads.

2-way/1-way communication
As with previous controllers, users can enjoy 2-way integration using the latest Arturia OP-Xa V. This means that the controller interface can be updated when presets are changed in the plugin, when plugin instances are switched or even manually on demand. The controller even accounts for discrepancies between a plugin pot-position and a controller pot-position, and implements pick-up or smoothing modes to avoid juming values. This allows for an improved and tighthly integrated workflow. Other traditional 1-way MIDI CC mapping is available for the brand new GForce OB-X, SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II, DiscoDSP OB-Xd and Synapse Obsession. Those modes, even though more limited, still offer a fantastic new hands-on experience for virtual synth users.

Pricing and Availability
The SFC-OB is available on the SoundForce webshop for 399 euros incl VAT (exact price will depend on your local VAT %) in the EU and 329 euros for customers outside the EU. Perfect Circuit will be distributing the SFC-OB in the US, Signal Sounds in the UK, Cicada Sound in Canada and Dupertuis in Switzerland. Please get in touch with your local distributor for pre-ordering/ordering and pricing information."

Oberheim OB-X voice boards compared to OP-X PRO-II

video upload by SonicProjects

"Oberheim OB-X voice boards tuning trimpots and the autotune function compared to the tuning features of the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II software VST AU synthesizer.

This is an addition to the 'Voice management and detuning' chapter in the official Tutorial: [posted here]

For this comparison we are having a look at the electronics under the belt of an Oberheim OB-X Rev. 2 with 6 voice cards installed.

OP-X PRO-II internally works exactly the same as a real voltage controlled polyphonic analog synth including separate independent voices, voice-based tuning trimpots, slightly deviating voices caused by device tolerances and temperature drift, and autotune.

The autotune options in OP-X PRO-II however not only cover pitch (as in OB-X) but also filter cutoff (as in Matrix-12), filter envelopes and portamento, and autotune also can be applied seamlessly on demand, so achieving any state between tuned and detuned.

Other than in real voltage controlled polyphonic analog synths OP-X PRO-II can save the state of detunings with the patch and so allows a different sate of detuning for every patch, which was impossible to do in the originals.

SonicProjects invited this engine already back in 2006 with the first version of OP-X PRO (in fact already its precedessor OP-X had it, but not yet offerig user-accessible trimports - only autotune) and was the first plugin manufaturer in the world offering this feature.

In OP-X PRO-II this detuning engine has was extended and refined with a seamless autotune option and quick calibration features."

Oberheim OB-X vs. SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II

video upload by

"A dry 1:1 comparison of the SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II virtual Oberheim VST AU software synth to an Oberheim OB-X Rev.2.

Both the OB-X and the OP-X PRO-II were recorded 100% dry and unprocessed over an RME Fireface UC - the OB-X over the line inputs and the OP-X PRO-II via optical cable over the optical S/PDIF-input. What you hear is the pure 24-bit recording. Of course there unfortunately will be some compression artefacts from YouTube.

Used hardware and software:

Korg MicroKey 37 MIDI keyboard
MacBook Air 2020 M1
macOS Monterey 12.1
Logic Pro 10.7.2
RME Fireface UC
SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II version 1.2.6 synth interface standard
Obererheim OB-X Rev. 2 with 6 voices installed

The exact detunings (deviating filter settings, warm up pitch drift, etc.) and the individual pan settings of the voices of OB-X have been copied voice by voice in every detail with the voice-based tuning features of OP-X PRO-II for a perfect match to the real synth.

To copy the bright sound OP-X PRO-II uses the BRL (brilliant) filter setting (DMP button, second button above voice mutes in the synth interface) which is dedicated to copy the sound character of the early OB-X and allows the filter to open into the ultra sound area and adds some extra shine in the heights.

The used patches are available in the synth's included banks library in this bank: Downloaded / PROII_COMPARISON"

SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II: Official Tutorial

video upload by SonicProjects

This is the new official tutorial for SonicProjects OP-X PRO-II which covers everything you need to know in one huge 9h video.

Such a tutorial has been requested by many of you for a long time, so we took the time & effort to do it.

You don't like reading manuals? Then watch this video instead in which we explain everything you need to know about the synth.

Table off contents:

00:00:00 Table of contents
00:00:12 Interfaces comparison and installation
00:31:20 Patch manager and how to use banks
01:10:10 MIDI Learn
01:48:06 Voice management and detuning
03:47:00 Effects unit
04:09:29 Arpeggiator / MIDI Processor
04:55:14 LFO
05:36:07 Oscillators
06:13:30 Filters
06:44:55 Envelopes
06:55:32 Levers section
07:14:59 Aftertouch and Velocity
07:32:45 Sync To Songtempo
07:54:40 Built-in Soundlibrary

To navigate within the Tutorial either click these time markers or use the YouTube generated chapter sections in the timeline of the video.

We did not expect this tutorial to become this long, but this obviously is the time it takes to explain each and every feature the synth offers which are endlessly many.

The synth offers a total of 142 parameters from which several even are mapped into presets, and this on one single page.

This on one hand may make it difficult to operate the synth without any knowledge in all its details, but once you know how things work you'll be able to edit and program very fastly and intuitively.

In this tutorial we not only cover all the features but also talk about and demo the included banks library in the last part of the video.

We recorded 8 hours of this video in one single take and then just added some things we forgot on the next day, which makes the video easily watchable in one take if you have some time to do so (we did it too for supervising!) and it won't be overly tiring. Of course you also can only watch parts of it or in daily portions. It's all up to you.

Such a tutorial has been requested by many for years and so we finally took the effort to do it."

OP-X PRO-II: Interfaces

Published on Aug 12, 2019 virtualoberheim

"The newest version of OP-X PRO-II (1.2.6) offers two interface types (Synth Interface / Rack Edition) each in 3 sizes (standard/large/huge) via separate installers.

This video shows how they look in the screen of an iMac 27" Mid 2017 Retina 5K at standard resolution (resolution equating to 2560 x 1440 pixels real).

The alternative "Rack Edition" interface does without a virtual keyboard and empty chassis areas for maximum controls size on the smallest area possible. It furthermore also offers labels and dedicated controls for hidden features and calibration tools and a new way of presenting the presets of a loaded bank.
